subtitle: This one goes out to Samantha who hath inquired a million times about my love of the metrx and for some reason I kept forgetting to respond.
My tip of the week, in my never to be wishy-washy opinion, is to go forth and find ye a protein shake that you like.
As we have previously established I HEART the Met Rx.
The old school original Met Rx chocolate flavor.
According to their website this is why I *should* like it:
METAMYOSYN® Protein Blend
The “Original” protein meal replacement powder that revolutionized sports nutrition! Combining METAMYOSYN® protein, L-Glutamine and a variety of vitamins and minerals, MET-Rx Original Drink Mix is a great addition to your fitness regimen.
• Helps support muscle mass*
• No Fructose or Sucrose added
• 3g of L-Glutamine
• 100% RDA for calcium
• High in Antioxidants
According to the nutrition information this is why I mightcould like it:
Calories 260
Calories from Fat 25
Total Fat 3 g 5%
Saturated Fat 2 g 10%
Cholesterol 10 mg 3%
Sodium 380 mg 16%
Potassium 1,190 mg 34%
Total Carbohydrate 19 g 6%
Dietary Fiber 3 g
Sugars 3 g
Protein 38 g (you all need this, right? because youve been doing your weights so diligently?)
Intellectually (and, at heart, MizFit is truly a nerdy intellectual) I should like it because the man who started the company, Dr. Scott Connelly, actually developed the metamyosyn protein to use with patients post surgery (or so the story goes. if you’re interested there is more information here.). He wanted to create something which would help them regain their health and prevent the loss of post-surgical muscle loss.
None of these reasons are why I love the Rx or why I think everyone needs to find a protein shake which they adore.
It’s as simple as it tastes great, it’s good for me, it’s easyfastandSWEETCRAVINGsatiating—what’s not to love?
I give you MizFit Hearts the Met Rx: more than you ever wanted to know.

April 15, 2008 at 5:02 amMy hubby keeps trying to get me to try a protein shake (I don’t eat a lot of meat, so he worries about it), but the few I’ve tried so far really bother my stomach. In ways that are not appropriate to be described in a comment, if you know what I mean. I’ll have to give yours a shot…

April 15, 2008 at 5:09 amThanks! I’ve been asking my protein-shake drinking friends what kind they like best. I’ve narrowed it down to a few to try, if I can just find the time to make it to GNC.

April 15, 2008 at 5:18 amLove the MizFit but could never really love the protein shakes. I’m not a vegetarian, and am pretty conscious about getting protein at every meal or snack, so I’d rather get my protein elsewhere since the shakes taste kinda funky to me and the steak does not.
But for those who like to shake it, sounds like the metrx is a great suggestion!

April 15, 2008 at 5:30 amI have yet to find a protein shake that I like, so I get some sort of protein from my food at every meal/snack.
That’s cool that you got to meet Jack. I just learned about him when I saw that video! I’m going to watch other videos of him on youtube while I’m at work 🙂

April 15, 2008 at 5:45 amok, I feel compelled to add that I ONE HUNDRED PERCENT agree with the crab and jay.
as per my clean food yammer (which we wont get back into here—you can thank me later) it’s always better to find protein at every meal or wrangle an invite for steak @ the crab’s house (Ill bring the salad!).
I do firmly believe that we all need a go to fast easy protein shake we ADORE (if you cant find that—–then youre stuck with the gotofasteasy of the envelope’d tuna I guess :)) and which can, for the MizFit at least, satisfy that summer sweet craving ALMOST as well as icecream & has the added bene of a muscle-building kick.

April 15, 2008 at 5:52 amI never could find Whey protein that mixed well in milk and I am waaayyy too late for work to fire up the blender. My solution, I add it to my fat free plain yogurt (no lumps!) add flax seed and I am goo to go until lunch.

April 15, 2008 at 8:33 ami try to love the protein shakes/bars….seems like such great ideas! i can never get past the taste/texture though. usually they have fake sugars and flavorings and i just can’t do it. guess i’ll give the met rx and those youbars a try.
how does a berry/banana yogurt smoothy stack up in comparison??? is there a good protein powder i could add to that??
MizFit says
April 15, 2008 at 8:37 amdefinitely Jen (and sam, I guess, too! just haul that same shake home and toss in blender with some scoops of protein to lend it SOME SORTA good-calorie bonus!).
The thing with the smoothies are they they oft are crammed with sugars (simple) so throwing in protein would definitely help.
Id play around with different kinds.
flavored will add some kick/taste (vanilla? berry?) or you could just fortify with unflavored protein you like (soy, whey, pea, egg—-try em all!)

April 15, 2008 at 8:41 amI keep meaning to try MetRx. I have been meaning to for about five years now — thanks for the reminder!
My go-to protein-carb-banana-flavored love is Shaklee Physique … OK, mainly because banana flavor is a good excuse to add peanut butter and milk. It’s like kindergarten snack-time in here.

April 15, 2008 at 8:50 amThanks for this. I have not tried MetRx, so I’ll have to try it.
Is it possible to take in too much protein?
The Bag Lady says
April 15, 2008 at 8:56 amThe Bag Lady has never tried a protein shake, well, unless Carnation Instant Breakfast (a hundred years ago) counts!
She promises to go out and shake a cow, though – would that be the same thing?

April 15, 2008 at 10:07 amHey MizFitz
Love the name and the site. Thanks for visiting me as well. Nice to have fellow fitness bloggers out there. By the way, I have tried MetRx and I do like it, especially the chocolate. Still I sometimes find myself moving from one to another just to taste what’s out here. I guess it depends on whether I want whey, soy or egg protein. But I agree with you on taste–it’s worth every calorie! See you soon.

April 15, 2008 at 10:18 amSorry, I’m with Crabby! And being more into endurance means that I’m usually more interested in getting extra carbs in (when I tracked my food intake, I was surprised at how much protein I was getting in without realizing it! Probably a lot more than I need. It was a nice surprise because I’d thought that I was way below my protein needs!). But I really like your idea of putting the Met Rx in the freezer- does it taste just like ice cream when you do that?
Also, I checked out the ingredient list and I’m pretty impressed with it. That’s a good find of yours. Thanks for the tip!

April 15, 2008 at 10:24 amWelcome SpinDiva!
Im as you say you are —–it’s like dating.
I keep leaving my MetRx and seeing what else is out there and RETURNING to him, err, it.
Eileen? you ask a LOADED question about protein amounts. that’s a post in and of itself and Im on it!
Sagan? what you are doing/training for is DEFINITELY more of a carb-thang. Id imagine with little effort you get enough protein and need to keep jamming in the complex carbohydrates.
that said 🙂 Id still do the metrx.
half water, half-decaf, ice and a splash of crystal light? perfection.
(I leave it in the freezer for at least an hour and yes, to me, it’s pretty on par with icecream. texturewise I mean 🙂 I LOVE the taste but no, it’s not Ben & Jerry’s)

April 15, 2008 at 11:08 amCall me the blender queen. The only downside to owning a VitaMixer is that its hard to run it at 8am when your roommates sleeping and its sounds like your just started a chain saw. I love making smoothies packed with protein powder. Right now I use Whole Nectar because I can get it cheap via VitaMix, but I’ve tried others in the past, the flavored ones from Trader Joe’s had a really strong (not in a good way) aftertaste and I wasn’t to happy with it. Although with as much good stuff as I cram into my blender, you dont really taste the protein powder. On a typical day I’ll make a smoothie with 2 tablespoons protein powder, 2 tbls flax (soon to be chia), fruit (usually frozen unsweetened strawberries, pinneapple, mango) a banana for creamyness, cabbage for health benefits and maybe some yogurt. I use almond milk and oj for my liquid. So yummy.

April 15, 2008 at 11:45 amYou mean you can actually just drink these like the directions say? NEVER done that. I always make mine into a smoothie with frozen berries (for the vanilla flavoured) and mix it with plain yogurt for the chocolate flavoured. Made some attempts at making protein bars with them too. As for brand, I usually go with the cheapest I can get at Walmart. As I don’t drink them plain, taste doesn’t matter all that much to me.

April 15, 2008 at 1:25 pmI HEART MizFit. Not so much with the protein shakes (or bars either). I’m a weight-lifting vegetarian that doesn’t do supplements so you’d think I’d be seriously protein deprived. But honestly, I’ve never been leaner and stronger! Even as an omnivore. All of my one-rep maxes improved after returning to being veg. I tried protein powder for a while and hated it. Eventually I decided my body must just like less protein than other peoples!
Gotta go with Crabby & Sagan on this one!
Thanks for the vid though – always good to “see” you:)

April 15, 2008 at 4:31 pmFirst, I was going to to ask the same question as Eileen (how much is too much?).
Second, Jen who posted first–I’m lactose intolerant and can only tolerate certain protein shakes. You could try a different kind of protein (and I mix my soy protein with unsweetened almond milk-yum).

April 15, 2008 at 5:42 pmAh, I was curious.. I am allergic to a couple of the proteins in cow milk, so I haven’t tried a lot of the protein shakes. I DO take an Odwalla Super Protein drink to the gym and guzzle it post workout/pre shower (one serving.. not the whole bottle). Alas it’s only 10gs of protein. I often add 1/4C of All Whites to it for an 6 gr. extra boost.
May pick up a small container of met rx (wish they had sample sizes…) to see if I can handle it.

April 15, 2008 at 6:05 pmI love Delicious Protein Shakes, especially the Coconut chocolate bar flavor. It taste as good as it sounds. It is high quality so it does not upset my stomach as some other brands do (the grocery store stuff). And I am lactose intolerant. But I think I might try yours next as I am always trying different brands.

April 15, 2008 at 6:07 pmDebra—you might wanna swing by a GNC and ask about buying a single packet!
tell them youre sensitive etc and they might do it for you.
I know the one here will do that.
Taylor, Ive never had those shakes. Duly noted about the deliciousity!

April 15, 2008 at 6:08 pmI’ve recently become a fan of the protein shake. I just bought a vanilla flavored whey protein powder, but unfortunately I don’t like the taste.
I’ve also tried a plain soy protein powder in the past, and that seemed to go down much easier. It blended well too. I love my shake with 1/2 a frozen banana blended in – makes the shake like a milkshake (only healthier)1 🙂 I’ve never tried Met-Rx, so I may give it a try!
Thanks!!!

April 15, 2008 at 8:30 pmInteresting variations on the standard protein shake, with the coffee and the Crystal Lite and such. I might have to try spicing my concoction up a bit! 🙂

July 16, 2008 at 7:44 pmDoes anyone have a suggestion for a good vegetarian protein powder option? And by good I mean as close to 4 calories per gram of powder as possible — there are plenty of hemp protein options, but the nutrition is as follows for my dainty little Nutive Hemp Shake packet: 80 calories and only 7g protein. Can this serious pass for a protein shake? Grrrr.
Steve says
July 17, 2008 at 6:51 pmHi, yes it can seriously pass for protein because thanks to the fiber of Marijuana Muscle aka Hemp, it absorbs better into your body. Since hemp protein does not have any sugar or flavoring added you can take as much as you need to get as much protein as you want. Also it is the easiest on your stomach. Stick to Hemp.

August 15, 2008 at 5:00 amOk this may be a silly question… but should I be taking a protein shake?
I’m 25, 5ft6, currently weighing 134lbs but trying to get back to my pre-summer binge weight of 127lbs. I do a martial art and I normally train 5 nights a week but we’re in our pre-season at the moment so I’ve been doing cardio and strength work in the gym. I need to get back to 127 because it’s my competition weight, but I’d also like to drop body fat and build up a bit more muscle, mostly for a vanity reason, to show off the muscle tone that I’ve developed over the last 10 years of training. 🙂
I’m doing weights 5 days a week for the last 3 weeks, alternating between Arms & Chest and Legs & Back, and I’ve been trying to fit in some form of cardio every day too. I’ve been watching my calories, trying to keep between 1200-1500, but of all good healthy stuff so I’m not feeling deprived or hungry. I’ve lost a few lbs and I’m noticing more definition in my upper abs, but I’m still not too pleased so I guess I’m just impatient… 🙂
So.. should I be taking protein shakes? Will they help me?

November 22, 2010 at 5:00 amInteresting, thanks for that. My son has a terrible aversion to eating raw fruit for some reason, so I make it into smoothies for him and then he loves it! I also found some great smoothie recipes here and thought I’d share – lots of other great ideas there.
