Summer hath arrived with a vengeance where MizFit lives.
As as result, I thought Id share some of my fave hot weather finds and you, oh Bumbling Band, could share some of yours in the comments (not so subtle hint from an oh so sweaty mama).
First, have you seen this yet?
Their promise? WIN Sport Detergent will attack & banish perspiration from high tech exercise clothing (MizFit takes a moment to ponder if she owns anything high tech. Decides she doesnt care. The stuff needs stankremoval regardless.)
My initial reaction was whatta rip off Im sure it’s no better than regular detergent quickly followed by the recollection of the amount of seriously stinky laundry we have up in herre by week’s end.
It’s bad, People. Take my word for it.
The worst part (& dont pretend you DONT know to what Im referring) the uber sweated in articles of clothing which still seem to cling to their stank even *after* being washed & dried.
Im in on this one.
I figure if it’s good enough for the US Olympic Team Sweaters then it’s good enough for Miz & MizTerFit.
onward.
this? love.
Probably because *I* am all about the blender (I so love my shakes & even more in the summer) the Toddler Tornado is as well.
I havent yet been able to find them in Rite Aid as advertised but love the promise of the “two tone blender with tornado blending action!” (their pun. not intended.)
Ill keep you posted.
The infamous & fantabulous Crab wrote an interesting post recently about whether or not we should fret about the chemicals in our sunscreen.
me? I dont. I probably should worry more but I just make the most educated choice I can, buy the ‘screen, and apply.
Did you know, however, that we are supposed to use 2 tablespoons in order to properly cover our entire body and face?
how on earth do we, when chillin’ at the swimming hole or reclining at the luxury resort, know precisely how much a tablespoon is?
We merely recall *this* Tuesday Tip, of course! It’s two OK-signs worth!
There you go, oh Bumbling band.
That’s all I got.
You? Please to cool us off in the comments.
Edited to say: we are always all kinds of lucky up in herre.
WIN Sport Detergent wants to give away a free container to a lucky commenter below (yada yada yada random number generator) and has also offered the MizFit some detergent as well (how nice is THAT? Or is it that my stinkage is truly that legendary? Im choosing to believe the former.).
If you dont win or dont wanna wait you can order online from their website.

June 24, 2008 at 4:34 amI am in for the stink remover and will probably buy it.
Tanning? I was raised in Florida! We used BABY OIL for our tanning needs. Now, I use coppertone dry oil spray. why? Because it smells good.

June 24, 2008 at 4:47 amI too suffer from the “accumulated stink” problem. I should probably either try the stuff or perhaps think about buying new workout tops after, like, 10 years? (I hate shopping for them as they never fit me. Too dang short).
And for all my worry about sunscreen ingredients, I just ended up buying more of the same supposedly toxic kind, ’cause it was on sale.
Missicat says
June 24, 2008 at 5:09 amI sooooo need to try that detergent…I usually only have time to do laundry once a week (yuck, I know), so my accumulated gym clothes have little parties and dances in my closet. I hate to spoil their fun, but that stank MUST GO.
I am supposed to use sunscreen? ooops….
MizFit says
June 24, 2008 at 5:34 amI SO hear you guys.
Im pumped about getting some detergent *beyond* the fact Im usually the giver not the receiver.
Im quite confident all the peeps in my great state of TX shall thank me.

EDITED TO SAY: good point hugh’s mom. the WASHING o’the blender. seriously, how could I forget that part. duly noted.

June 24, 2008 at 5:35 amStanky sweat is the best kind – whodathunk of making detergent for THAT?
My boy would love that swirly blender, but I’d still have to wash it.
Sunscreen – the boy is a fair-skinned, freckle-faced, red head. He needs those chemicals to protect him from lobsterfication in the summer. Gonna kick him out of the house and to the pool today covered with that stuff.

June 24, 2008 at 5:36 amOh, I really really really need the stink removing detergent!! I was actually just considering throwing clothes away because no matter how often I wash them, they still smell like… well, you know what they smell like!
Oh, and thanks for checking in–much better today!!
weelittleme says
June 24, 2008 at 5:36 amdetergent sounds interesting. I have two cooling off tips.
1. you can come visit me in NZ it is seriously cold as down here!
2. wool! I loved your comments about the stankness. The only clothes I get that don’t hold the stank are wool. And recall that I work in the woods all summer with no running water and access to a shower and laundry, oh, about, every two weeks fer real! That, my friend, is stank! But the wool doesn’t smell or make you feel sticky in the heat.

June 24, 2008 at 5:41 amI haven’t tried the detergent but have heard good things about it. Me? I just use good ol’ white vinegar. I keep a spray bottle of it in the laundry room and spray the stinky, stained ‘pits of my shirts, let it sit for several minutes, then toss them in the wash with regular detergent. Gets rid of the smell and stain, and no I don’t smell like a salad after washing. At least I don’t think I do…
tokaiangel says
June 24, 2008 at 5:42 amI’m so obsessive about washing clothes that I tend to spin-dry holes into most of my workout clothes before they’ve had even six months of use.
My washing machine is ALWAYS on.
I am killing the planet.
I need detergent!
I would suggest a trip to the UK to cool down, we haven’t had summer yet – I think it got lost in the post or something.

June 24, 2008 at 5:46 amoh, I totally need the stink removal! even my kid tells me I smell “stinky” after working out! (it’s just the clothes, right?)
i too used baby oil as a kid. (sigh)
I keep it cool by going thru all the neighborhood sprinklers during my walk or run. Sometimes I even cross the street to hit the good ones. (y’know, the ones that will gently mist me) Yes, I officially need a life!

June 24, 2008 at 6:18 amIf you Froogle.com the Swirlez, it will give you a list of places and prices you can purchase it if you don’t want to wait until Rite Aid has it.

June 24, 2008 at 6:24 amMy husband used to have a workout shirt that could knock down a building from 100 yards. It seriously stunk. I would wash it and wash it, and nothing would work to get rid of that stink. I finally threw it away when he wasn’t looing.
I now have fears of my own workout clothes smelling like that. Ewwwww.
Wait, girls don’t sweat, right? We glisten. Well, I was glistening hard at the gym yesterday!
FatFighter says
June 24, 2008 at 6:24 amI don’t get it – does the detergent keep your clothes from stinking while you’re working out? Or just make them smell better than regular detergent?
The blender sounds awesome, except for cleaning out the straw. That might be a bit difficult.
MizFit says
June 24, 2008 at 6:28 amit targets your (if by *your* you mean MY—-which I do) embedded odors, FatFighter.
so methinks it’ll remove them but not make you (please to see above parenthetical) smell like a rose whilst glistening.

June 24, 2008 at 6:35 amI so hear you about clothes that don’t lose their stink even after washing. That’s why I buy super cheap workout shirts (Goodwill is a fave) so that I can just chuck ’em after a few years. Yeah, my earth-loving heart just died a little too. I’m intrigued by the detergent. You will have to tell me if it lives up to its promises.
The Swirlez looks really cool. Thanks for giving me gadget envy.

June 24, 2008 at 6:41 amI get it now – thanks! I think it’s too early still for my brain to function properly.
The Bag Lady says
June 24, 2008 at 6:42 amInteresting about the detergent. Wonder what’s in it that removes the eau de work-out?
The Bag Lady uses either vinegar or hydrogen peroxide to deodorize the laundry (vinegar works as a fabric softener, too – use it in the fabric softener dispenser) – she adds the peroxide to the water along with the soap before she adds the clothes. (of course, she also uses peroxide to brush her teeth – whitens and brightens everything, that stuff!!)

June 24, 2008 at 6:51 amI had been using Penguin Sport Wash (http://www.penguinsportwash.com/) for the last year, but I keep seeing the Win detergent popping up in magazines and on the web now. I wonder if it’s the same or better?
I had stink-accumulating workout gear too, mostly shirts. The sport detergent definitely took out the funk.

June 24, 2008 at 7:08 amI am pretty sure I don’t stink. 😉
Re: Sunscreen. I have tried the stuff without chemicals. I don’t think it works as well as the “real” stuff. I try to limit the amount of bad crap we put in and on our bodies, but as far as sunscreen goes…the chemicals may be bad for us, but I know skin cancer is bad for us. So we use chemicals. 🙂
suzanne says
June 24, 2008 at 7:09 amI can definitely identify with smelly clothes 😉
No i don’t worry about the chemicals in sunscreen there’s other things that i think are more important!!
Gena says
June 24, 2008 at 7:11 amI’ve heard of that detergent, but have never seen it in the store. I’ll by trying the vinegar trick in the meantime!
Nita – I don’t glisten. I sweat like a gross sweaty monster. My darling husband makes fun of the sweat running down my shins and doesn’t understand how I don’t get dehydrated.
Sunscreen? I guess its a necessary evil. I love being outside, and I’m not going without the sunscreen. I usually use Water Babies because it’s gentler on my sensitive skin. Oh, and you should use about a shot glass full of sunscreen each time! Just in case that’s an easier visual for some of us (me).
Hannah says
June 24, 2008 at 7:16 amI usually do laundry enough that the stank doesn’t linger- but for those times I don’t…this would be sweeet.
I LOVE to blend and in the summer ours has a spot of honor on the counter where the toaster usually goes.
If the sunblock is on me and my punks, well then I feel good about remembering to put it on. Chemicals schmemicals.

June 24, 2008 at 7:16 amlove*love*LOVE the shotglass visual/tip, Gena.
When I’m on a cruise & lolling about whilst reading some good (read: bad) mindcandy I’m *so* going to order a shot, slam it & then smoothly refill it with my ‘screen & commence slatherage.
Anyone wanna contribute to my Cruise Fund?

June 24, 2008 at 7:27 amThat blender looks pretty cool…I may have to go see if I can find one. Perfect for both my babies. 🙂
I don’t know much about the lotion, but I do know I slather my kids in it…a couple of times a day. We live in Ca and they are really fair skinned. Even with all the lotion they are still turning brown. (I am paranoid about skin cancer as a friend was just diagnosed and it spread pretty rapidly into her organs).
Anyhoo…summer time hints of keeping cool? Grill. Keeps the heat out of the house and the mess down to a minimum.
Mallory says
June 24, 2008 at 7:28 amA tip about the blender… its looks like a designed version of the magic bullet (yes, thats what it is really called) which also had its own personal canister. My experience was that if you want to blend anything frozen, and assuming its summer and hot you probably do, then dont bother! Sorry to dash your blending dreams but no use spending money on something that will look pretty on the counter.
I’m all about the hawaiian tropic 45, totally smells like coconut/tropical island love.

June 24, 2008 at 7:29 amI bike to and from work everyday to avoid the 4.19 a gallon gas prices. That 90 mins a day brings a lot of stink for me and my husband. I would love to get that stink out of the clothes so I don’t have to buy a tank’s worth of new ones each week.
Have a wonderful day and make sure you get that 10k in.

June 24, 2008 at 7:38 amBetween my stinky workout clothes and having 2 boys, we could use this!
Felice says
June 24, 2008 at 7:46 amOK, just put that detergent on my shopping list. Sometimes my poor workout clothes have to go through the wash twice because, egad, the stink lingers!
About the sunscreen — I’ve been wrestling with this. I try to use as little of the stuff as possible, not just for me but for my toddler, too. So, I have rash shirts (UPF50) and long board shorts and a hat to keep him covered. THen I just put sunscreen on the exposed bits.
I think it is all about trying to reduce our chemical exposure as much as possible, but not going insane. For instance, last year I switched from regular body lotion in the winter to Cetaphil, because Cetaphil works well, isn’t crazy expensive and it doesn’t have parabens. But, I use other things that have parabens in them — because they work for me and are priced right. All about balance for me!

June 24, 2008 at 8:00 amI NEED THAT DETERGENT! Much more than I would need that soap from last week… I get the stanky thing after a while.. I just gave up and started buying cheapies from Target (although, they are quite nice!) Everything is soaked on my when I get back from a daily 6 mile run. I also need something to put them in other than my gym bag so that doesn’t reek either… Life.. is.. tough!
Have a great day!

June 24, 2008 at 8:11 amWe all seem to have the stinkage problem. I thought it was the material!
We need fancy sippy cups around here! Those things are cool.
RooBabs says
June 24, 2008 at 8:25 amWell, I was hoping to get some cool-off tips, because my only solution thus far is to collapse on the floor in front of one of the a/c vents when I get home from a run. But by then I’m just one big ball of sweat and I make puddles on my hardwood floors.
Summer finally made it to Utah, and for the past 2 weeks we’ve had 10-degrees-above-avg temps (90’s instead of 80’s). I’m sure my clothes are pretty stanky about now. They could definitely use some special treatment- especially the sports bras, because boob sweat is the worst! I usually use Spray N Wash, but I’ve heard the vinegar thing before. Maybe when I run out I’ll try that- unless of course I happen to “WIN” (pun intended).
I only pick sunscreen based on SPF factor (usually go with 30), and the smell. My current is Ocean Potion (yes, that’s really the name), and it has a light, fruity scent.
MizFit says
June 24, 2008 at 8:28 amI hear ya’ RooBabs.
The only thing that really works for me in this raging TX heat (besides the cold shower/cold hose/cold pool) is to eat cold treats really quickly.
I always have a protein shake waiting for me in the freezer during the summer and consuming *that* can make me thisclose to needing a sweatshirt.
CLICK HERE for some shake ideas….
M.
RooBabs says
June 24, 2008 at 8:40 amThat’s a fabulous idea, MizFit. A frozen protein shake sounds uber-tasty, and helps to promote muscle repair, right? Gotta love the dual-function. Thanks!
Note to self: purchase fixin’s for protein shake.
P.S. My only other thought was to buy one of those squirt-bottle fans, like they sell at theme parks, and carry it with me when I run. I could maybe get away with it outside, but for all you gym-workout types, might not go over so well.
Jenn says
June 24, 2008 at 8:47 amThey really should make stank-resistance workout clothes. Now THAT would be a best seller.

June 24, 2008 at 9:10 amThere are two bathrooms in my house, and my husband would leave his sweaty clothes hanging in the our bathroom to dry… there is no fan and no circulation, and wow, it was amazing how much stink a single tank top/shorts/jock outfit could generate. (However, I swear hubby had no clue why when I asked him to please hang them in the other bathroom.) After every wash, they smell er… ok… until he sweats in them again, at which point the stink magically triples from last usage!
As for cooling off outside… one of my favorite tricks is freezing my water bottle half full, then topping it off with drinkable water… I can carry it with me and it stays reasonably cool for good while as the ice melts, but I can still drink right away. (And it gets damn hot here in New Orleans.)

Besides your helpful OK measure, 2 ozs of sunscreen will fill a shot glass. And we all need to fill our shot glasses about every 2 hours or so if we’re outside. No, sunscreen is not an all-day affair.

June 24, 2008 at 12:38 pmMaybe I’ll win — if not, I’ll try the vinegar. Mostly for my husband’s clothes!! OF COURSE!
Also, about a month out of date, but I saw some back and forth about Laughing Cow and why it was “processed.” I think it’s the addition of sodium citrate (the shelf-life addition, I think) and a few other non-traditional cheese ingredients, and the fact that it appears to be made from the processed cheese process (which includes combining the “scraps” from other cheese making – thank you Wikipedia) that make it processed. For being “processed” or “cheese food” it sure is yummy and nice and low-cal. Even my husband loves it!

June 24, 2008 at 2:46 pmRock on with the vinegar. It’s cheap and earth friendly. I also tend to use a citrus oil based cleaner because it clings to the sweat residue and washes away.
Silly blender. Too hard to wash, will probably break. Stick blenders rule. I use mine for everything and it washes in, like, seconds! The “regular” blender sits lonely on the counter…
Sunscreen? That’s for adults? I can’t get away with baby oil and iodine anymore? LOL. A friend of ours has a nasty squamous cell carcinoma that caused me to put a bottle of sunscreen in the swim bag of every member of my family. I was thinking of trying the mineral powder sunscreen, too.

June 24, 2008 at 3:41 pmWe have sensitive skin around here, so our stink-removing item of choice is also vinegar (it really does work, even when my husband leaves stinky workout clothes in his car for two weeks). For that reason (the sensitive skin, not my husband’s messy habit), we’ll have to opt out of the drawing this week.
Our “cooling off” tip is wading pools. The ToddlerBear and I wallow in them on hot afternoons. And libraries. They’re really well air-conditioned.
But for those who need to “freshen up” in the heat without a shower, I strongly recommend unscented baby wipes (see sensitive skin info). Seriously. They help a lot.
Oh, and we’re spf 50 sunscreen people. I hadn’t previously heard anything about a chemical problem. *SIGH* What I didn’t know was probably hurting me, but at least I wasn’t conflicted about it. But I think we’ll stick with our baby sunscreen and count it as better than hiding indoors or going without.

June 24, 2008 at 4:46 pmI can only imagine the heat. Got a little taste of it a couple weeks ago, and it was pretty powerful. Those are days you just want to go swimming.
For extra stinky clothes I like to use washing soda or Borax in the laundry. Seems to work! Vinegar during the rinse cycle also helps cut odor, and it acts as a fabric softener.
Sunscreen – I wear it everyday! I’m just too fair to be venturing out in the sun without a little bit of protection.

June 26, 2008 at 11:17 amI’m SO bummed that I missed this one! 🙁 I just took our sports laundry out of the dryer and after one whiff I had to throw everything back in the WASH. UGH!!!! It was a stomach churning sweaty smell that seemed as fresh as when my husband came home dripping from his 6 mile run yesterday. I think our old sports wash is on its last leg and we’re in need of something new . . . I think I’ll also try a bit of baking soda . . .
