OK, Miz, Oiselle was started on the disgruntled-ness of not finding chic, functional athletic apparel. Much of what I thought was missing has been what’s driven the brand. And yet, I remain very curious and open to what OTHER women think is missing.
What bugs them? What irritates them? What gets stuck in the places where things just shouldn’t get stuck?
For me, it was running shorts…and big boxy running tops, and shimmels that roll and ride above the navel. Not to mention neon vests, the color fuschia, white shorts liners, vanity sizing, and much, much more.
For your readers, I would be curious what irritates you? What’s missing? What do you want to see changed? If you could design the ideal garment of any kind, what would it be? Do the brands you buy love you back? Or do you just put up with what’s there? If you could take it all apart and put it back together again – what would it look like??? (MizFit note: here’s where we can finally be heard with regards to the SIZE lament we’ve oft discussed!)
Id love to give everyone who takes the time to share their constructive criticisms a free Iris Sport Top.
(please to comment by midnight tonight—–we’re going central time, People. And yes: it’s USA only. It’s a postage cost thang.)
You can see it on our site. It comes in pink or black, sizes XS – LG.

I’ve really fallen in love with your blog and the Bumbling Band.
Amazingly, their their comments often reflect precisely how I feel and think myself. You must feel that all the time…

There you go! It’s the “you get a bra! and you get a bra! and YOU GET A BRA!” Oprah never did.
and lemmie say it first: I know the bra doesnt come in XL or XXL and I *know* we are all kinds of opinionated about that.
We do, however, finally have the ear of someone in the apparel industry.
She’s listening—git to talking.

Oiselle! how generous & COOL!
my biggest issues have been running shorts that roll/ride up as I run. SO ANNOYING! I will have to think about what my ideal garment would look/be like, no one has ever asked before! imagine that! (so thank you).
I am huge on brand loyalty. yes, I want a company that I love to love me back and I will be a die hard FOREVER.

August 13, 2008 at 2:43 amTops:
1) Adjustable straps, but not with metal, if that’s possible, on a sports bra would be a good idea.
2) Magic fabric on the inside of the bottom that keeps me from chafing. Anything too loose and the girls move too much, but anything less chafes. This is a problem and hurts a lot in the shower, and my sports bra is pretty loose. π
Shorts:
1) Bigger pocket, so I can at *least* fit in a credit card. Possibly a phone.
2) Drawstrings = love.
Other:
1) This is gonna sound weird, but an adjustable hair tie (but with more stability and less trouble than a ribbon), ’cause putting up hair that is “in between” two times around and three times around the hair with the tie is complicated; I always opt for three, but it pulls!
Thanks for asking reader opinions. Shows consumers you care. π

August 13, 2008 at 3:05 amOK, so I miss out on the giveaway π but I’m not going to let my geographical location prevent me from spouting off about gym kit!
I have major problems with chafing on my sports bras – I’ve tried eeeverything so it’s not just the fit. Is there a magic material, as Amanda suggests? I too have the shower-pain, and it’s not fun.
Tops that roll up to reveal my pot belly to the entire gym do NOT make me happy. So longer tops would be great – it’s fashionable to have longer length shirts now anyway, so it makes aesthetic sense too.
Finally I know Oiselle aren’t as hideous as some brands are for the Bright!Colours! but nice colour combos are hard to find in the workout world. Hint: REDS and derivatives of red are NOT always a good look if you intend to get a sweat on. Nobody likes their top to clash with their face. Personally I’d love to see some more 70s style gym kit with contrast piping, retro colour combos and cute shorts. And leg-warmers. But you know me. I’d hit the treadmill in a fascinator and pink Louboutin heels if i could.

More FUN. Not, like “fun” (i.e. hideous) colors, but clothes that’ll make me smile when I put them on (that skullpatterned sportsbra from YAS and Oiselle’s track t-shirt which i would buy in any color they care to make it — I wanna wear them every day) come to mind). And a big obnoxious brand name doesn’t = fun.
Totally second the desire for longer shirts. Not bigger, just longer.
And cool socks… like those wacky ones that go with bikeshoes, but for running and crosstraining.
And, yeah, once I find a brand I like I will keep going back. The folks who make the shoes that have taken my feet through hundreds of miles have a longtime fan in me.
thanks MizFit and Oiselle!

-I love runner tops with the bra built in, BUT those bras never have enough support for the actual run. So a runner tank with a super supportive built in bra would be WONDERFUL.
-a doitall runner dress with shorts built in that don’t ride up, pockets for money & GU, & fully supportive bra.
-a skort but with cropped leggings instead – so a skegging? skegg? leskirt? with back pocket.
thats all for now, more later.

August 13, 2008 at 4:47 amOkay, yes, I love me a pair of fitness pants that make my booty look astounding. But please can it also be a little less revealing on the other side? August 13, 2008 at 5:03 amWhen I work out, I have to wear 2 sports bras. I have 38D (last time I checked) sized ta-ta’s and I would like more support. When I played rugby in college, I needed two bras and a supportive tank so I didn’t get knocked in the face. So I’d be thrilled for a super supportive bra.
I’m just getting into athletic gear in general, so I’ll say what’s cool with me. I like material that wicks away sweat (almost like bathing suit feel?). I like longer tops too (I have jelly rolls that no one needs to see!) And support for the boobies!
I’m not a serious runner, but I like shorts that are longer enough on the thighs so mine don’t rub together too bad and don’t ride up on my thighs or cause wedgies. Of a normal rise! None of that low rise stuff.
But really, I prefer to look like a hobo at the gym so no one is blown away by my beauty and I can be left alone.

August 13, 2008 at 5:35 amWhat a generous and great offer! I’ll definitely show some love to people who care about our opinoins!
There are 3 things that really bug me with running wear.
1. I want shirts that will slide down over my hips, even if it means they are cut as a triangle. I hate having the shirt slide up around my waist and needing to adjust every 100m. Of course, I also don’t want to look as if I’m running in a muumuu.
2. My shorts tend to do that awful creeping thing – you know, where they inch up the inside of your legs and then look stupid and can lead to chafing? Yeah, I don’t like that. Also, can we get some shorts liners in a color other than white?
3. Seams! This has gotten to be less of an issue in my latest purchases, but I’ve still seen several garments that have seams in bad places. Like across the boobs. Bad idea! Seams should be only on the sides and well-finished to prevent rubbing. It looks like the Iris Top has that under control.

August 13, 2008 at 5:37 amWow! It’s awesome to be able to share my workout wear troubles with someone who can actually do something about it! I tend to buy my apparel from from lower-priced stores, and maybe that’s my problem. I have lots of C9 from Target and some things from Kohls.
1. Long tops that don’t ride up: I love to wear long tops because they’re great when bending over and moving around, but all the ones I have ride up as I’m running. It’s annoying to have to keep pulling them down! It would be great if longer tops were form fitting on top but ever-so-slightly looser on the bottom so as to not ride up. Or, maybe they wouldn’t come up if they were righter on the bottom??? Not sure.
2. Adjustable straps on sports bras: I agree with Amanda above on the adjustable straps. However, it would be great if they could have the adjustable part somewhere NOT on the back or somehow made without plastic or medal adjusters. C9 at Target has some that adjust, but the sliders bruise my back when I have to lay on the floor for exercises.
3. Running skirts w/shorts underneath that don’t ride up, although I thik Miz has already found these… I may just need to splurge. π
3. Pants that come in lengths. I have a 34″ inseam, so these are always appreciated.
And, LOTS of pretty, mix-and-match colors. I get sick of what’s out there, and I want more options. π

August 13, 2008 at 5:57 amI agree with a lot of the comments I’m seeing here. My wish list is:
1. Longer tops which don’t ride up. I hate trying to hold a pose in my yoga class with my belly showing. And if they were a little looser through the waist/hips, maybe my “muffin tops” wouldn’t show so much, either.
2. Pants available in different lengths. Most are too short for me.
3. I would like to see bras/supportive tops that prevent “show-through.” I’m only an A cup, so support isn’t as big an issue as it is for most, but I do have a problem with showing what I have in public. Especially when it’s cold!

August 13, 2008 at 6:00 amWhat an awesome giveaway, how generous!!!!!!
Here’s my “top” frustration:
Finding tank tops that are LONG enough. I am still wearing tops that are like 10 years old because I have a fairly long torso (but I’m not even tall!) and I really have no desire to go bare-bellied. But I shop and I shop and the bigger sizes get wider but are never LONG ENOUGH. What do actual tall women do?
I understand a lot of women like a shorter cut, but surely I can’t be the only one out there that feels like they’re trying on doll clothes?
I can’t wear men’s because the arm holes are too big but sometimes I’m tempted.
Thanks for this great giveaway!

August 13, 2008 at 6:04 amOiselle, how generous!!
I have one pair of shorts that I love. I bought them about 5 years ago and of course, the company quit making them. They are a looser style and have a built in short underneath, big plus for when you are doing certain floor exercises! The built in short is not too tight and doesn’t cut in or ride up – very comfortable. Most shorts are too short or ride up.
Also, have to second the built in bras on tops – they really don’t do anything. Need a running top with built in support that actually supports so you can run!
Tricia says
August 13, 2008 at 6:06 amOkay, I also wear 2 sports bras when I run and I have ALWAYS done so. I cannot find one that is supportive enough. And I am not HUGE – well, depends on your definition of huge. But I am a 34D.
So my vote is for a runner tank with a super supportive built in bra. In a size 34. D. Please.

August 13, 2008 at 6:30 amCould someone make/sell the liners in shorts seperate from the shorts themselves? All that is out there is bike shorts – yuk- and too short stretchy lycra shorts. I would like black not so tight liners to wear under regular gym shorts so I can do floor exercises and not show my cheeks to the world and I could jog and not jiggle. Is that too much to ask? Get Champion on the line!

August 13, 2008 at 6:30 amI love working out in my 20 plus year old T-shirts from 10Ks that I did before I had kids. I feel nostalgic and also proud that I’m still running (OK jogging). I also think a big ol’ sweat shirt with hood is the best for winter running.
Fun sock colors to go with my bright running shoes would be nice.
I like the newer option of capri length leg-wear, sometimes the shorts are a bit too short.
My one beef is that though I’m not big, I have trouble finding bras with enough support.
Kelly says
August 13, 2008 at 6:34 amHmmm… for me it’s 2 things:
1. Shorts. I don’t want them to fit like bike shorts, showing off ever ounce of cellulite I have left. But when I buy baggier versions, they’re either so short my buttcheeks are hanging out, or, they’re mid-thigh length — but then they RIDE UP to buttcheek level. WHY?! And pockets on shorts. Heck, pockets on EVERYTHING made for women….why do we get minipockets? Why can’t we have pockets-big-enough-to-put-an-mp3-player-and-a-set-of-keys in? Why do only men get this? (Actually, in hindsight, it’s probably because a large pocket would hang out the bottom of the buttcheek shorts…but if you fix one problem, there’s room to fix the other!)
2. Tops. I love the sweat-wicking-whatever fabric as much as the next chick…but I’m busty, and yes, still carrying some jiggle in mah middle. Therefore, the spandex-like suction to my body is not exactly flattering, and I spend my workout worrying about how I look, not how well I’m running. A nice top that doesn’t show every one of my (ahem) assets would be nice. Maybe more of an empire-style cut to it (right under the boobies) versus just a plain t-shirt would make me feel less self conscious about my belly chub.
Kelly says
August 13, 2008 at 6:37 amHmm, and incidentally — I see the free top is for A/B cups, so I won’t be emailing Sally — my D’s ain’t gonna fit in that!

August 13, 2008 at 6:39 amMy most supportive bra is also my least breathable bra, which is super frustrating, boob sweat is gross. Also I seem to have a complete lack of torso, so any and all t-shirts seem to be too long (like nearly covering my shorts, a definite fashion no-no I believe).
My biggest problem though, and I am not sure if this comes under “apparel” is that socks never fit right–I go out and buy $16/pair running socks that are supposed to be size “small” and end up wearing the heel part of the sock around my ankles. that annoys me to no end. Why can’t we have socks that are sized the same way shoes are so I could get some that actually fit?
Thanks so much for listening to me gripe!

August 13, 2008 at 6:46 amAAAAAhhhh the joy of venting about ill-fitting workout clothes!! But first, I own a pair of Oiselle shorts and love, love, love, love, love them. Why? The waist band is not the normal cinching elastic band made for people with teeny tiny waists. It is wide, no elastic, and oh so comfy!!!! THANK YOU!
Now on to the venting:
1. I’ve tried every bra on the planet and most make me chafe under the pits. Others are simply too loose all over. And still others have some new kind of sticky elastic band around the bottom that feels like you are stuck to a water hose.
2. Shorts (other than my Oiselle and my SkirtSports running skirt) just plain suck! They are made for men I guess. I despise those tight elastic waistbands. Then people starting reinventing them with the same elastic, gathered waists but looser. That doesn’t help. Then you have tight elastic around your hips. Oiselles are perfect, fabric is delicious!! and Skirtsports are light as air, with great pockets, and fabric that really breathes. (I’ve tried lots of different skirts, by the way).
I have found great socks, shoes, and ways of pulling back my hair — so the rest of me is happy while working out π

August 13, 2008 at 6:46 amShoes – I want good walking shoes that are made for bigger people – like 300 pounds of bigger people. Seems to me that since there is more to us, we could use some additional cushion under our feet. The bottoms of my feet ache something awful some days after I’ve done a treadmill walk and a dog walk, and I can barely walk. Give me more cushion!
More options in Plus-sized workout shorts, leggings, t-shirts, sports bras that are affordable would be loved by me. As a single parent w/one income I find spending $30+ on any clothing item touch to justify.
The Dieting Ninja says
August 13, 2008 at 6:55 amMost of my stuff is going to echo the above, but more votes never hurt.
1) Shorts that don’t ride up between my legs and chafe.
2) Shorts that don’t ever-so-slowly creep between my butt, requiring me to reach back and (every so attractively) remove it every five minutes or so.
2) Shirts that are slick enough to not ride up (assuming slickeriness is the problem). Longer shirts, that sort of thing.
3) Seams! Oh, goodness, the seams. Seams on the side of the shorts kill me when doing my ab workouts, and the adjustable bits on my sports bra kill me any time I have to lie down on my back and do crunches.
4) Sports bras with control AND ease of use. For example – those of us with larger busts need some serious squashing control to keep the girls from bouncing around and causing damage. right now, I need a sports bra that fastens in the back, like a regular bra. The last time I tried to slip a bra with that much support over my head, I ended up wrenching both shoulders just trying to get the blasted thing in place.
5) Fashion, fashion fashion! Fun fashion, to be more specific. Instead of using seams to indicate patterns, abandon subtlety! Take a look at the scrub patterns now available for those in the medical and veterinary fields. used to be, they were boring boring bland. A few TV shows where they hired professional seamstresses to fix the design issues, and now WALMART has a huge selection of crazy and fun patterns, from Warner Bros cartoons to kittens and puppies. Assuming I knew the clothing was comfortable and useful to begin with, I would absolutely pay to have an adorable skull and crossbones outfit, or pinstripes, or kittens, or paisley (oh how I love the paisley). It’s time the exercise industry shaped up as well, I think. I demand to be known as the crazy girl who shows up with the giant smile and the paisley workout gear. Yes I would.
6) Pockets! Poooockets pockets pockets! Even a single pocket. Just somewhere to stow my keys, or my wedding ring, if I forget to take it off. That means it needs to have a closure of some kind. I would only use these for running – obviously any kind of pocket would get in the way of my ab workout.
7) If you could find a way to make a nice, slickery, sweat-wicking shirt that didn’t fall gracefully and outline my belly, somehow making it look even larger than it normally does, that would be great. Somehow the one I’m currently using drapes just-so and outlines my gut. Less than awesome.
8) Don’t know if you do socks, but I am always on search for socks with arch support and sweat wicking. I’ve found some from peds, but I have plantar faschiitis problems, and the difference between good support socks and regular socks is astronomical. If I could find those socks in crazy colors and patterns, I’d switch brands immediately.
9) If MizFit hadn’t so graciously shown us, I would have requested an all-around picture of the bra on the website – the back does matter. I’d like to know and be comforted that the bra is good for those with larger busts as well. Smaller busts don’t worry about support as much as we do – in truth, there’s almost a whole different set of needs with regards to construction for larger breasted women than smaller. Has the sports bra been tested and performed well for the larger sizes? Or does the lack of XL and up size indicate that it’s not really intended to be used by those who need the extra support?
10) Staining. My current setup is a pair of gray shorts, a white sports bra with extra smooshing power, and a white sports tank overtop. Somehow, even though all I’ve done is run in these, I’ve managed to get large oil-looking stains on the front and back of the shirt. Assuming these are caused by sweat (and not by rogue fry cooks stealing into my bedroom at night and dousing my laundry while cackling madly), could we get some stain control? I don’t want to buy a new top every month just because the old one gets a stain that won’t wash out from regular use.

August 13, 2008 at 6:58 amAlong with everyone else, I hate that my running shorts ride up and bunch between the legs.
I’m a fan of Moving Comfort for my bras — lifelong fan. They are the only bras that I have found that work, for me, so I have a bunch of them.
I’m also a huge fan of DryMax socks because they really do keep my feet more or less dry on my runs. I just converted from Thorlo and PowerSox about a month or so ago and now I am hooked.
I would like longer tanks that fit my hips. My hips aren’t THAT huge but it seems like all the longish tanks are too tight once they get much past my waist area. Then, they just bunch up. Not good. Or, they are way too bell shaped and just not practical.

I agree that adjustable straps, but not with metal, would be nice on a sports bra. In general, I like support but not padding in any bra.
I also like colors and patterns on bras that are fun – I know that may be odd but even my sports attire I like to enjoy looking at and putting on.
It seems like most workout clothes are either very tight and form fitting or huge and baggy. Would love to find something in between. Enough give to cover my imperfections but not so baggy fitting.
On the Oiselle website, I really like the race day tank and big run tee. These seem to be just what I am looking for. I’ll have to try them out.

August 13, 2008 at 7:28 amLonger tops that aren’t just bigger everywhere — I’d like a nice fit that will still stay down owver the top of my shorts.
Shorts that don’t bunch up and therefore chafe. I usually run in a skirt with the built-in compression shorts. I’m not super comfortable in “booty short” on their own, so I like the look of a skirt covering the shorts. But the legs of the shorts must stay put to be worthwhile!!
MAJOR pet peeve — sizing that makes no sense! How can I buy a medium of something one season that fits great and the next season that same brand is a full size bigger or smaller and I end up returning or o loger fitting into things??? AARRGH!
I am VERY brand-loyal — if I find something that works I buy it in every color!

2. Nice wide waistbands that don’t cut into my fat or pinch like skinny elastic or drawstring ones do.
3. Loooooong tees and tanks to cover up the stretch marks and with arm holes cut back so they won’t chafe or bind my shoulders
4. A sports bra made for small breasted gals that won’t completely flatten me out. And – I like my girls to face forward. Regular sports bras leave both nips in different directions. Embarrassing!
5. Items that are original and unique.
6. A sport bra with a hole or a clip for mp3 wires! (You know how you run the wires up under your shirt but then spend the whole workout tugging them back up so they don’t pull your earphones out??)
I might be back later with more ideas. Cannot even TELL you how long I’ve waited to tell an actual product manufacturer this stuff!!

I would also love to have sports bras that don’t let everyone know how cold it is (*wink*), and that don’t chafe in the armpits or front of the chest, and that wick away the boob sweat. I have a padded Danskin bra that does the trick, but it rubs some on the chest (below the girls).
Perfect shorts would not ride up or rub between my thighs, and would have pockets, and a drawstring, and would be somewhere between mid-thigh and knee-length.
My favorite bottoms are capri pants, but not the kind with the billowly legs, a-la-yoga-pants. I like the kind that are more form-fitting down past the knees. But with some kind of pocket that zips. And I love workout bottoms with the athletic stripes down the sides.
For tops, there would be no rubbing from seams, and no riding up. I have somewhat short torso, but I love long shirts that don’t bunch right around my waist. V-necks are good. I don’t like tanks with built-in bras because they are never supportive enough (or have the show-through problem), or they are too tight and rub.
About colors, I would love to see more muted neutral tones such as plum/eggplant, olive green, burnt orange (hey, I’m weird like that with my fall color scheme).

August 13, 2008 at 7:47 amWhat a great giveaway! So generous!
1. My major issue with running apparel is definitely the shorts. I like pairs with liners (either underwear or compression shorts under looser shorts), but they always seem to ride. I find myself looking behind me to make sure no one is looking before I pick my wedgie quite often :).
2. Hair. I have a weird hair length that I don’t want to give up just for running, but the front does not stay in a ponytail, and I can’t stand it in my face, so I wear wicking hats. I think someone needs to invent wicking headband things, because wicking hats are still HOT.
3. Socks. I have tiny tiny feet and size small running socks are too big, but I don’t have much other choice. I’d love to see some wicking socks for small feet.
4. Something else with bottoms in general. I’d like to see a clear pocket on the front of shorts where an ID can be slipped in. I’m not really into the Road ID’s or anything, but I’d still like a place to carry my ID in case of emergency that someone could see. Credit card or a couple bucks could fit in there too for an emergency gatorade stop :).

August 13, 2008 at 8:02 amOOOh best giveaway EVER!
I have the same basic whines as everyone else. And yes, I have major brand loyalty. It’s hereditary. My grandmother has bought the same pair of adidas tennis shoes every year of my lifetime.
1-Sports bras. If it was possible for one that closes in back like a bra to not chafe horribly, that would be magical. Because i hate wrestling them over my head. And I do have major under-boob-sweat problems. Just looks silly to have these two half-moons of wet on my cool new dri-fit race shirt.
2-Shorts. Sigh. I LOVE my new skort. But when I cycle, the under-short rolls right up. And even though I wear a size or two bigger than my “real” size in running shorts, they ride up. A lot. I think it would take some sort of magic to prevent this, so I guess I’m asking you to invent magic shorts. Although I really think that just making them longer would fix most of the problem (why oh why do all women’s shorts have to have an inseam just long enough to hem the legs while men get to wear shorts past their knees?). And POCKETS. I just want a pocket that’s not on the inside of the shorts right up against my skin (where things tend to chafe) where I can safely store a key. With a zipper.
3-Shirts. I’m actually fairly satisfied here. But it would be nice if someone remembered that women have hips and flared shirts at the hip instead of making them rectangles (I’m calling it the “hourglass shirt” in my head).
I have no sock or shoe complaint. I wear boring white socks and like it that way. But for style, I love the 70’s style that someone suggested. Oh and sizing–what a mess. I’ve been changing sizes with all this running and I never have the foggiest idea what size I “really” wear. And trying things on with a toddler is NOT fun. I have no idea how this can be fixed, but I will say this: Instead of saying “well, a size medium is 36-38 inches and a large is 40-42 inches . . . I wonder what size I “really” wear?” I would love to buy clothes the way guys do. My husband wears a 33/32 in jeans. In every brand. I would love to say “my hips are 39 inches, therefore I wear a 39.”
Off to take the toddler to the “big cool with the wheeee!” (big pool with slides).

August 13, 2008 at 8:05 amVery, very cool. Just a few personal notes about suggestions already given and my take on things.
1) Medium length shorts. I don’t want booty ones, and I don’t want ones down to my knees. Just a normal pair of shorts that won’t show my cheeks, but don’t go so far down the leg that they’re too hot for summer.
2) I have a freakishly small head. So, any hats or headbands are generally too big, but the girl’s stuff is too small. Please make an extra small women’s. Please!
3) Ditto to an earlier comment about hiding the “girls” when they get cold. It’s embarrassing and happens A LOT after a run. I don’t want push-up padding, but maybe a little something to hide that.
Thanks for hearing us out!

August 13, 2008 at 8:09 amAll my complaints are pretty much covered – really really want a COMFORTABLE sports bra for the super-endowed – think DDD here. Is this possible? And easy to take off – nothing worse then coming in from a long run, being tired and sweaty..then having to pull that darn thing over your head while it fights you all the way!!! Bad bra!

August 13, 2008 at 8:10 amSweet! Apologies if these have already been stated to death!
The common issue with the athletic shorts of all types. My thighs touch and as soon as I move my shorts creep up my legs. I never wear standard running shorts because of this. They are crazy uncomfortable and look even crazier on me.
I’d like to see more “reinforcement” on bra tops. I usually wear a sports bra and a tank top overtop and I can still get a “headlights” problem (doesn’t even have to be cold). It would be nice if tops had a little padding to prevent this.
I’d like more tank style tops that are fitted on the sides to show that I actually have a shape, but not so fitted that they keep my stomach in a death grip. Tanks that look as good when you laying down doing crunches as they do when you are standing up.

August 13, 2008 at 8:18 amOoh its nice (darn that Canadian address!). Although I’m apparently too small for a lot of bra shops to have my size, so maybe it wouldn’t have fit me anyway (perhaps I need to start looking in the tween stores? lol).
I agree with Keyalus on the tank tops- they’re always either too tight or else really loose. And shorts that don’t ride up would be good too!

August 13, 2008 at 8:20 amCalling all opinionated? Sure fits me to a t. I don’t wear tshirts to work out. I am all about work out clothes. Until two months ago (recent move) I taught group exercise classes at two gyms, three days a week. The other days, I am still at the gym or knocking around town. I L.I.V.E. in gym clothes.
OMgosh. I’m so excited I can’t type fast enough.
I like a modest fit, since I am in front of kids all the time and in front of gym members. Need to look nice and prefer to look “updated”. Function plays a big role for me as well.
Waistbands that roll bother me. I don’t like having to adjust the elastic in shorts/pants because it shifts around.
I love bras with built in support seaming, but not underwire. Something that shapes while holding my sisters in. Hate the ones that flatten like a pancake.
Wicking material is a MUST. Even down to my socks. I will not buy something, no matter how on sale or cute it is, if it is not made of wicking material…Texas girl here that glows in the humid south.
I am a dedicated Nike fan. Materials hold up with washing, *glistening*. Fresh styles and colors. Fabrics are not too thick, or too thin. Classic pieces mixed with funky. I like the longer tops that hit just below the waistband of my shorts so I don’t have to worry about peek-a-boo tummy if I lift my arms. I even buy Nike for my kids.
I also love Skirt Sports. Their line of gym girl skirts fit me like a glove and I love having the shorts under the skirt. My thighs don’t mix well with the tight spankies. I am not though a big fan of their tops. I also like that their skirts look good on every shape and size.
One super huge irritation: I am short. I love pants when lifting weights or teaching a weight class. Most pants are way too long for me and I don’t like having to always opt for capris. The wicking material does not always hem well either. Give me a well cut, just long enough, bootleg pair of pants and you will be my forever friend.
I like the look of the Lulu lines, but won’t buy them because of the company’s reputation. Won’t even wear their line if it was free. I know many many companies have/can earn a bad name, but theirs truly sticks out in everything I have read about them.
And there ya have it. A very opinionated Sassy response.

August 13, 2008 at 8:25 am1. Compression shorts roll up on my thighs (as stated a million times already)
2. Top with shelf bra that’s thicker.
3. Longer tops
4. Tops cut bigger under the arms toward the front. They chafe me there.

August 13, 2008 at 8:25 amI’ve been pretty happy with my workout clothes, but here are a few things:
1. I like wearing tank tops to work out in, but I hate the ones that try to be all creative with the neckline so that I can’t wear a sports bra without it hanging out all over the place. Yes, there is a built-in bra, but that is NOT enough for most women!
2. Longer tops that don’t ride up please!
3. Wide waistbands with extra elastic there to cover and control the muffin top that inevitably comes with narrow waistbands.
Thank you for this opportunity!!!

August 13, 2008 at 8:38 amI killed my knee running, and braces are really bulky and don’t breathe, so I guess the ideal garment for me would be pants that give support to my knees without being completely hideous.
Also, anything that’s so light/breathable that I’m not aware that I’m wearing it when I work out (or something that wicks really well).
I’ll wear anything/am not really brand loyal, as long as it’s cute, and tend to wear hanes and champion when I work out (just graduated college…)

August 13, 2008 at 8:44 amWow. Very generous.
I think all of my wishes have been covered above, but some bear repeating: built-in shelf bras stink, throw a real bra in there;
don’t limit super-supportive sports bras to only C and above because some of us are small busted BUT have very mobile breasts nonetheless;
watch the elastic you use to make the inside lining (built-in underwear) for running shorts, as chafing in this area is PAINFUL;
one thing I don’t think I saw on Oiselle is spandex-type running shorts (sorry if I missed them). I actually like these because they eliminate the ride-up madness. Maybe they could come with a running skirt which you could wear or not wear depending on level of self-consciousness or mood?
Thanks!

Please know that all of your input is SO much appreciated, and I look forward to discussing your comments further…and actually MAKING some of these ideas. August 13, 2008 at 8:57 amWow, so many of my issues have already been touched on…!!!
Main one. My thighs touch and I CANNOT seem to get into a groove running with shorts on. No matter how hot it is out, I will wear at least a pair of capri workout pants. I don’t know how we could ever solve this problem, but it would be amazing if something could!
Also, the tank top chafing, right under the armpit…It hurts!
I am not brand specifin, if I find something that works and I like it, I will get it…it just takes a lot of looking for that to happen!!!

August 13, 2008 at 8:59 amFor me, I have problems because I have a short torso and a lot of workout tops don’t seem to fit right. I am 5’4″ so I fall in the petite category for traditional clothing but don’t think I’ve ever seen petite workout clothes.
The other thing I would like to see is more support in built-in sports bra tops. I always end up wearing another sports bra underneath, so it seems to defeat the purpose.
Thanks for the awesome giveaway!!

August 13, 2008 at 9:05 amShorts – A pair that doesn’t creep up on me would be wonderful.
Socks – I’d love to find a pair that has some extra cushioning on the heels and balls of the foot. I’ve tried some brands, and they work well for a little while but after a few washes they become like any other sock.

August 13, 2008 at 9:11 amThe design of exercise tops could use a major overhaul…I can never find an exercise top that is long enough and slim enough to fit my body and I’m only 5’5. All the long tops are too baggy and all the slim tops are too short, so I usually resort to the old standby…regular old navy tanks but they are lacking the important moisture-wicking feature…
Lora says
August 13, 2008 at 9:11 amShorts! I hate the way they creep up between my legs when I run. I’m not cofident enough to wear the spandex kind. We “larger” runners need something we can wear while we’re “getting into shape” – most everything is made for those “already” there”!

August 13, 2008 at 9:14 amAwesome giveaway! I love freebies (who doesn’t?) and am in need of some new sports bras! The ones I have now have stretched a bit (probably from my well endowed chest!) and don’t give me much support sometimes! So, that brings me to my workout wear complaints (even though most/all of them have been covered):
1) Sports bras that stretch out. Maybe I need to shop around a little more?
2) Shirts that ride up and I have to keep pulling them down during my run.
3) Shorts that ride up.
4) I have yet to find a tank top with a built in bra that I can actually wear without an additional sports bra (34D here).
5) Some workout clothes are so expensive! Maybe I’m cheap, but I don’t wanna spend THAT much money on something that’s gonna get all sweaty and gross. I really don’t care how I look when I work out. I want something that gets the job done.
6) I’m fairly short and some shorter workout pants (petite section, perhaps?) that don’t drag on the ground would be great for the colder months.
I think that’s all of my complaints for now…I have more than I thought!
Amy says
August 13, 2008 at 9:15 amHmmm, this one really got me thinking. Off the top of my head there are a couple things:
Shorts – ones that don’t ride up (of course) but I also really like for them to have zippered pockets so that I can carry some essentials with me (cash, id) while I’m running
Sports bras – ones that don’t chafe! I get the worst chafing when I go for long runs. Under the boobs is an obvious place but I get it under my arms too! Which brings me to…
Tank tops – some that lie flat enough that they don’t rub under my arms while running. I know that they look super cute but in general I just can’t get the ones I’ve tried to work for me when doing a real workout.

August 13, 2008 at 9:26 amMy biggest complaint is always with running shorts having really wide waists and then tiny inseams. They always bunch up when I am running. The leg length of the shorts will be okay, but the inseam is only an inch or so and that is NOT comfortable.
Also, long tights that don’t ride up your calf! I have relatively long legs (33” inseam) and have a hard time finding a long running/yoga tight that doesn’t creep up giving me high waters!
Fitzalan says
August 13, 2008 at 9:27 amMy biggest complaint about workout clothes is that they ride up. My shorts ride up and my tops ride up when I am bending over/running/anything. I really have no desire to be the girl at the gym showing off her midriff (especially because the CEO and President of my company seem to be in the gym at the same time as me way too often!). I hate having to stop, adjust, pull down the shirts, unhinge the shorts from my crack (TMI, I know!) while I am trying to get a good workout in.
My ideal garment would be something that comes from a very breathable fabric. I am not a fan of working out in anything cotton. It would fit my larger size chest and also my extra long torso. I do not like when tops are so tight around my chest that it gives me this like armpit-side muffin top. Also, there would be a pocket in the lower back with a zipper on it. i love shirts that I can either slip my MP3 player into or a gel. Oh yes, and it either would be sleeveless or have sleeves that are on the shorter side.
Shorts would fit fairly loosely (as to avoid the muffin top) but doesn’t ride up. There would not be elastic in the waist band. I do not like workout clothes in white because they simply do not stay stained but I like having workout clothes in all sorts of colors.
Do the brands I buy love me back….hmmmm. I have a New Balance sports bra that has been through thick and thin with me and I hope I never have to part with it. It holds everything in place, smashes down the boobs yet avoid giving me uni-boob. The worst part of this thing is trying to wiggle out of it after getting sweat during a workout. I have very few other items in my sports wardrobe that I am sold on. They begin to shrink after time or they start to hold sweat stains no matter how often I wash them. I do have a set of Nike socks that I love. They are thin and short yet still offered enough padding to make it through 20+ mile runs.
Okay–I could go on forever, but I will stop.

August 13, 2008 at 9:27 amThe one piece of clothing that I would love to have is a pair of shorts that doesn’t do that “awful creeping thing – you know, where they inch up the inside of your legs” (as Gena talked about). I HATE THAT!!! I feel so stupid. A running skirt helps hide the problem, but the problem is still there!

August 13, 2008 at 9:31 amThis whole not living in the USA thing is really starting to affect my ability to capitalize on swag. That being said, my biggest issue with most sports bras is the straps. August 13, 2008 at 9:47 amHello Again – A big thank you to those who have emailed me! Please know I’ve received your requests, and we’ll be getting those bras out within this next week.
One comment on the bra – since many of the input has been bra related: the one you’ll be receiving is a basic compression bra. Smaller gals can use it for high impact sports, and gals with bigger “girls” for low impact. If it’s not your fit/cut, I apologize, and please feel free to forward the love to someone you know.
BUT…drum roll…very exciting knows…please know (or should I say “please to know…”) we are coming out with a NEW bra with a fantastic new design. Essentially, it combines the best of compression, shaping (built in bra) and a no-see-through liner so you don’t feel like you’re nipping out when you’re working out. We call this new design GoodForm(tm) and it will be available in our bras and shimmels (full length) coming out within the next 2 weeks.
Thanks again, and believe me, your comments have made my day. I never, EVER get bored talking about workout apparel!

August 13, 2008 at 10:13 amIt’s all about bras for me. I am a 34DDD. I am a runner. I am also pretending to be stylish. Why, why, why can’t I have a sports bra that a) fits; b) is supportive so that I only have to wear one; and c) is cute! Most XXXL (or whatever) sports bras come in black, white & MAYBE blue. I want colors! And patterns!! And support!! The bras are ugly enough when you engineer them to support a couple of watermelons without pain that neglecting to make them in fun colors & patterns is just cruelty.
It’s just another way clothing manufacturer’s discriminate size-wise. Plus size clothing is often less attractive (I never wanted a muumuu when I was bigger), and larger bras are unattractive, and large breasted women don’t want to run and even if they do, they don’t deserve the pretty. Or something.
Not that I have an issue with this. At all.

August 13, 2008 at 10:14 amOh, what I would give for shorts that stay where they are supposed to! WHO…name 1 person…WHO wants their shorts to ride up while they are running??? Exactly…no one…and it seems to be a common complaint with most readers here! Shorts are my main issue.
Someone said zippered pockets which I think would be fabulous! It needs to be big enough for a cell phone, and ID at LEAST.
I’m also all about affordable (4 kids will do that to you).
As far as tops, I love the tops with built-in bra, but I seem to have the same issue that several people are having…still have to wear a bra. So I don’t even bother with those tops usually.
Last thing…it definitely must be good fabric. I think this area has come a long way from what it used to be, but I sweat alot and a good fabric is key!

August 13, 2008 at 10:15 amThanks Miz and Sally. Super Generous.
My problem is the opposite of FitBottomGirl. I have a freakishly LARGE head. I’d love a sunvisor or running cap that doesn’t leave me with throbbing temples post run.
I’m also a member of the rubbing thighs club. I could never wear those cute little running shorts for the possible fire hazard from the skin to skin. I wear capris and long pants all year long. If I wear anything other than wicking material, they start to come apart at the seams from the constant thigh rubbing.
Speaking of seams, it should be a rule that manufacturers are required to use 4 extra inches of material and sew an actual crotch area into bottoms. Leggings sewn in a way that simply joins the two legs together = a camel toe disaster!!!!!

August 13, 2008 at 11:01 amI wear yoga pants (long, flared) almost constantly when it is not too hot. How about some fashion here? Something other than all black or black plus pinstrips. I saw some online that had had colors and patterned materials in the triangle that made up the flare, but these were out of my price range. I’ve thought about making some myself but lack sewing skills. Matching shirts, tanks, headbands, socks would be possible, too.
My biggest issue, like many others, is finding a decent sports bra. The big-busted do exercize! Even Walmart, which seems to accommodate larger people, doesn’t carry sportsbras for us.
Thanks for listening!

1) Workout pants that are sized by length (i.e., I’m 5’2″ and have to get all of mine hemmed)
2) Longer tanktop workout shirts
3) Running shorts that don’t ride-up/roll at the waist.
4) Sports bras with adjustable straps

August 13, 2008 at 11:04 amMy perfect running short would be somewhere between a longer (8″ inseam) short and a capri that is fitted. (I don’t want the kind that fits loosely around the knee. I’m short, they make me look even shorter and more square…who needs that?).
Because I have rather short legs, most capri styles come down way past my knee and hit me about mid-calf, so they ride up from there and get bunched up around the back of my knee…not so comfortable. Because I have larger thighs, shorter shorts ride up.
Also, something that hits lower on the waist would be nice as well. And yes, with a nice sized zipper pocket for a phone and ID.
Champion at Target made something close to this for awhile (a knee length running short). It’s was just a little too long for me, but the best thing I’ve come across thus far. Lots of women on my track club ask me about them, so I know I’m not the only one who would like this. Unfortunately, Champion re-styled it so that the leg is longer (again, hits me at mid-calf…and it bunches up…sigh)

August 13, 2008 at 11:08 ammy main gripe..as most people’s is with bra’s. I am a 32 E/F who usually makes do with 34 D. Have you found any sport bras for someone who is that weirdly built? ANd the 34 D i brought recently works ok when running..but not really meant for mountain climbers/ burpies which is when everything pops out.
My ideal sportsbra would be supportive, reach high up enough on my chest to avoid the popping effect and also avoid the mono boob effect and ofcourse..atleast in black and white!

August 13, 2008 at 11:08 amA lot of people have requested longer shirts here. But coming from a short, flat chested girl, I really prefer shirts with a shorter torso. Unless I’m in yoga, I also prefer shirts that aren’t TIGHT, but slim cut. I like sweat wicking capabilities, but not swimsuit material (which easily bunches and rides). My favorite work out t-shirt is from REI and I think it’s made for hiking. It’s like really fine mesh. It’s also flatteringly cut with a highish cut v-neck.
I missed the iris top giveaway too, but it looks really great! Gotta order one.

August 13, 2008 at 11:16 amFinally, I can vent!
1) I’m tired of sports bras that ride up. My body is longer than the average woman and no matter what I try, the elastic band on my sports bras end up right up under the girls- often creating a dramatic uniboob effect.
-If I were to fix this I would have a longer body to my sports bra. I would want it to end at about the end of my ribs- with a compartment area similar to a built in bra you’d find in a cami- but just elastic on the front- not the back. Support w/o the riding up… and it might be nice to add adjustable straps at the back- to create a bit of extra length if needed
2) I hate hate hate it when shorts ride up between my legs. It’s almost as bad putting them back into place as it would be to pick a wedgie while running!
-Honstely, I don’t know what to do about this. I’ve tried spandex shorts, soffes, running shorts, basketball shorts. Maybe We need a fabric that is skin repellent- as in doesn’t like to stick to it and ride up.
3) Shoes. There- it’s out there now! This one is my biiig pet peeve as it comes to fitness. I wear a 13 AA shoe. That almost doesn’t exist when it comes to a running shoe! Now I have to pay for the companies’ stuck-up-ish-ness with sore feet. I guess I should add that I need a motion control w/o the pronation correction. Try finding that.
-There isn’t much else to do besides shoe companies getting on the large shoe bandwagon and giving me some choice when it comes to my tootsies.

August 13, 2008 at 11:21 amThis rocks! Thanks Mizfit and Oiselle.
My peeve is with yoga pants. My waist is small in proportion to my rear and legs, so pants that fit them are too big in the waist and my pants start to fall during my workout. π
And I would have to agree with longer shirts. I like my shirts fitted, but I don’t like them to ride up.
Thanks!!

August 13, 2008 at 11:31 amhaha crabby, I just read your comment. That made me chuckle- I’m wearing a cami right now that ends just at my belly button. I’m 6’3″ and have a terribly hard time trying to find clothes that fit- especially jeans (think thuindthighs+ me being a pear shape- it isn’t fun)
Back to shirts. I mostly wear Tshirts to the gym. Actually, that’s pretty much the only kind of top I’ll wear there. Size M with the sleeves rolled up 2x- and I’ve got 2 overflowing drawers in my dresser devoted to them. As for everyday clothes, OldNavy and the Gap have pretty long shirts. I like to wear layers a lot.

Also, I agree with whoever said something about the cute workout tops. There is NOT enough support to wear just that…unless you’re just doing yoga or something and I don’t do that.
Also, the short that ride up and show all your business. You can’t wear the looser ones when you do weights because people can see your crotch if you spead your legs but the spandex ride waaay to high up!

August 13, 2008 at 12:16 pmAnother 34D here who would love a sport’s bra that “lifts and separates” instead of squishing me into one giant mono-boob.
And pants with a pocket big enough to hold a kleenex, a chapstick, and a key.

August 13, 2008 at 12:27 pmHere’s my peeves:
1 – Shirts that roll up. It seems to me that this is a problem more with fitted shirts than the boxy, rectangular ones.
2 – Shorts where the waistband gradually slides up, which leads my running to wedgieville and innerthighchafingland. Those are not the places where I do my best running.
3 – POCKET! I want it to be able to hold my cell phone. Pretty please.
4 – Finally, the most minor issue I have is the way some tank tops are cut that squeezes excess armpit “skin” up. I’m not sure if that frustration is shared or if it is uniquely mine.
Thank you so much! You made my WEEK!

August 13, 2008 at 12:29 pmI normally whisper this, but, CHAFFING! I am a distance runner and cant seem to find any tops that don’t eventually dig into my skin towards the end of a long run. This causes me to make “angry face” while I run, which is my only defense for the chaffing while I am already running. This in turn frightens small children and people driving by. Clearly, for the good of society, I need non-chaffing running gear!
Ohh, and most running shorts I have seen are boxy and clearly designed with a man’s physique in mind! Grr.

August 13, 2008 at 12:32 pmI just bought a pair of running shorts that seem to poof out and look awkward while I’m running. It also has the white liner, which I’m finding to be very uncomfortable. The shorts I DO like sit low in the waist, and have zippered pockets to keep a key plus something small.
For tops, I have difficulty with sports bra’s. I’m tiny. I mean, TINY. But at the same time, I hate when they ride up high on my chest and my boobs look like they’re riding up near my neck. The liner inside is also important for me. I like them with a thicker liner inside for more coverage. Thanks for posting pics of the back AND the front.

August 13, 2008 at 12:47 pmI would love sports bras that don’t chafe so easily, and I would like more pockets in shorts/bras to store cell phones, gus, etc. Most shorts that I find just have a small pocket for a key.

August 13, 2008 at 1:01 pmHow about petite sized athletic tops, for those of us whose torsos are just shorter. I just bought a running tank with straps that fall off my shoulders because they are too long for my frame (of course I didn’t realize this in the store).
I also have to buy capri pants, because all of the normal length pants are too long, so petite pants would be nice too.
Maybe they have these at some store I haven’t been to, but I haven’t seen them at any department or factory stores.

August 13, 2008 at 1:09 pmMuch of my opinions have already been stated, but I’ll simply emphasize the following:
1. I do not wear running shorts. They ride up & chafe. I’m the girl running in pants (ALWAYS), although I have found some great capri length pants to wear in the summer by Sugoi. Some yoga type pants that are bootcut (not a huge flair), but with a wicking material would be great as I don’t like running tights that feel like a second skin.
2. I have a little pooch that likes to make itself known during an active workout. Problem is, I don’t like to show off the tummy. I would love a tank type athletic top with a really supportive built in bra, but one does not sit above my belly button or ride up. Tight at the top, but a little roomier around the belly. I have a few tops that work for the stomach, and although they come with a built-in sports bra, I always have to wear another one underneath.
Thanks for listening!

August 13, 2008 at 1:14 pmGulp. I need to go down some crunches now. π
My biggest thing is finding shorts that aren’t too baggy so as to avoid chaffing on long runs, but also won’t ride up the whole time. Nobody wants to see my sweet cheeks when pounding on the pavement!

August 13, 2008 at 1:16 pmok, so i’m at work and can’t read all the comments everyone else has posted…so this may have already been mentioned, BUT — as i mentioned one other time when this came up, there are no cute/functional/etc. workout clothes for the full-figured girls (i.e. up to size 24/26-ish).
and unfortunately for oiselle, their offer just reinforces that – “It comes in…sizes XS – LG.” Large is as big as they go?? REALLY??? come on! (i’m sure they’re a swell company and all, but it was just begging to be commented on.)
perhaps i’m a bit (more) hostile (than usual) today, but i have a feeling that the XS girls aren’t having to search high and low for workout gear that even comes close to fitting them. or doesn’t make them look neon and hideous and call even more attention than is necessary to the fact that this person really should have quit the donuts a long time ago.
and yes, yes…i know there are exceptions and sometimes it’s hard to find clothes to fit no matter what size you are, and all that jazz. but overall, i think the XS’s to LG’s have a bit easier time of it.
i have a feeling that might cause some hatin’…bring it on!

August 13, 2008 at 1:26 pmI’m going to be offline the rest of the afternoon/evening, so I just wanted to say, again, THANK YOU! Your input helps more than you know.
As a reminder, if you want the free bra, please don’t forget that you need to email me (sally@oisellerunning.com) with your size & color preference, and your mailing address (as many of you have done already).
Lastly, IF you enjoy your Oiselle product, and you have a favorite running store or athletic apparel shop in your town, feel free to request they carry Oiselle. (For those of you old enough to remember “I want my MTV!” it’s all about customer demand, and women requesting some variety in the apparel market!)
Ciao for now Bumbling Band! And a big collective hug to MizFit. You are a daily inspiration!

August 13, 2008 at 1:28 pmI guess I’ll have to repeat what everyone else is saying – I hate hate hate running shorts that creep up when you’re running. Also, I feel like all my workout shirts are too short and I hate having that little bit of skin showing between my shirt and shorts so lately i’ve been wearing baggy t-shirts, which probably isn’t the greatest…but until I find an extra long shirt that’s what I’ll continue doing.
Thanks for offering this!

August 13, 2008 at 3:41 pmI guess the only thing that really bothers me is that most sports bras I buy are glorified body wraps and they eventually lose the elasticity at the bottom part of them. I think there should be a sports bra that works like an underwire (which I’ve been using to run lately).
Jen says
August 13, 2008 at 3:43 pmMy main critique is that it’s impossible to find a sports bra for a large chest (36DD) that actually sufficiently supports. I don’t mind the uniboob, but then the band underneath chafes as I workout. But if I wear one of the more defined-boob-creating models, there’s just too much bouncing. I’d love a solution other than the two-sports-bras-at-once method — if only to cut down on doing so much laundry!
Rosie says
August 13, 2008 at 3:51 pmI hate seams that chafe! Sports bras and running shorts seem to be covered in them!
While it seems like there’s more and more fitted workout apparel for women — and I’m really, really glad about that! — I also wish I could find tank tops that are generally close-fitting without being skin-tight across my stomach. Working out is that much harder when I’m feeling self-conscious the whole time.

August 13, 2008 at 3:53 pmThe thing that bothers me most about sports bras are the ones that ride up. I put it on, it feels great, once running around the thing rides out and I am falling out of it.
Also, a skirt with longer pants underneath that don’t ride up so my legs don’t chafe.

August 13, 2008 at 3:54 pmDitto on the two bras at once issue. I also hate that workout pants have become low cut as well. Sure, it’s fashionable, but I really don’t want my undies sticking out the back at the gym. Ew.

August 13, 2008 at 4:10 pmI agree with what other people are saying about shorts that ride up…the only pair of running shorts I own that doesn’t ride up only stays put when I roll them down once, and then the crotch area looks baggy and awkward…
I prefer long shirts that also stay put and don’t ride up…I’m tall and its always uncomfortable to have to adjust your shirt.

August 13, 2008 at 4:10 pmfirst, let me say super abs, Miz!
Second, my favorite running top is moisture-wicking with mesh down the armpits and sides for ventilation. It is “shaped” with the bottom front curved and the bottom back curved and slightly longer than the front.
I love my running skirts, but POCKETS, people!
And since most of my running takes place in snow, I’m looking for pants that stay up for sprints and socks that are warm and thin and moisture-wicking all at the same time!

now i just need some new exercise pants. the ones i’m using now are just stretchy pants that i used to where all the time before i lost 50 pounds and now i just exercise in them. but the crotch? hangs at mid thigh. how am i supposed to walk/run with that going on? serious chaffing will ensue. so i hike them up to my bra, and then roll down the top so they’ll stay, but i could never go outside my house looking like that, with my floodpant look. any suggestions on the bottom half of me now that i’ve got the top half covered (haha)?

August 13, 2008 at 4:38 pmI *heart* my Oiselle shorts. I just ran 15 miles in my Marsielles today.
My pet peeves on running gear:
*shorts that migrate up to my crotch in front (when my 3″ inseam turns into a 0″ inseam), or liner briefs that cause a slow-but-steady wedgie as the miles add up.
*too-tight waistbands that cause muffin top. “Funny, my tummy area looked fine before I pulled on these shorts.”
*Sports tops that are cut for women with no tummy/hips, so they ride way-on-up-tharrr once I start moving.
*Sports bras that are cut really tight around the armholes, so they cause wicked chafing. I’d like to use the bare minimum of Bodyglide to survive a run intact.

August 13, 2008 at 4:40 pmTops:
– Maybe they exist, but I haven’t seen them – I’d love to see a regular t-shirt style top for GIRLS, preferably that wicks away sweat. I always go the tank top style for this reason, but sometimes you just don’t feel like a tank top, you know? oh, and please make it longer than waist-height, i don’t wear my pants on my waist and i don’t want a section of belly!
Pants:
– I’d love a capri that’s actually capri-length, aka just over the knee. I have ridiculously long legs (and almost no torso on me) and *still*, capris go down to a horrible-looking couple-inches-above-ankle length
– pockets, pockets, and more pockets. i always have to give the car keys to my boyfriend to carry!
– some sort of material that is loose fitting and comfortable, yet you can hope on machines such as the hip adductor or abductor without spending 10 mins arranging your pants so that you can actually perform that widespread movement. no, i’m not interested in a legging
i might be asking for too much, but this is what i would like π

August 13, 2008 at 4:42 pmRunning shorts that are almost perfect with the built in panty, key holder, and quick drying material, but then it looks like I’m wearing diapers- too boxy, but otherwise waist sizing is correct (it’s not like I’m without an arse to fill the space…there is just too much fluff?). If I go for the tighter shorts, I typically have to relinquish any desire for built in panties, pockets of any sort, and quick drying material.
Also, tank tops with “built in bras” that are typically never strong enough, so you have to wear a sports bra underneath regardless, or tank tops that roll up.

August 13, 2008 at 4:45 pmMine would have to be:
1. Yoga pants/workout pants that are fitting, but that doesnt use tight elastic on the waist to empahsize those love handles! I would love to have some fitted pants that do not emphasize unwanted areas, that have pockets to put my keys, cell phone, etc!
2. A workout T-shirt that isnt long enough to cover my shorts and make it look like i’m wearing nothing but not short enough that it rides up when i’m in a back bend to expose my whole stomach.

Saggybutt running shorts.
Ugly colors
Singlets that have way too much fabric around the midsection. I’ve got a thick waist and I still have to put darts in to keep from having fabric everywhere.

August 13, 2008 at 6:30 pmMy #1 complaint at the moment is the lack of pockets in shorts! This is the most frustrating thing ever. Usually I’ll want to be carrying car keys, paper towels, doggie baggies, an ipod, lip balm and (if I’m parking somewhere I’m not too familiar with) money, driver’s license and maybe a credit or debit card (since I don’t want to leave a purse in my car). Most shorts have this useless key pocket and nothing else. I finally did find a pair of shorts that I like at Title9 and it has A pocket. One. 1. Just ONE. Why only one? WHY? It’s completely maddening! I’ve been on a quest all summer long to find the perfect pair of shorts to no avail.

August 13, 2008 at 6:36 pmOne of my biggest complaints about clothing is the waist in shorts or pants. Why on earth do they have to make the waist so darn big! Just because my butt and hips are a little big does not mean I need the same size in the waist!

August 13, 2008 at 7:25 pmThis is such a generous offer, especially since a listening ear is included. =o)
I run between 3-8 miles, 1-4 times per week depending on whether I’m trying to train for a race, and I run on either paved trail or moderately level grass (just for some background).
Because my rib cage is 30″ and bust measurement is 31.5″, the most difficult thing for me by far is finding a sports bra that fits and that isn’t either a) made for children and thus not thick enough to prevent nipples showing, or b) made for women with a 30″ rib cage and larger cup size, which, when pulled down, cover almost half my torso. I’ve tried the tight running tank tops, but they don’t offer enough support (despite my nonexistent cup size, I still get sore after a few miles).
Also an issue (as many have noted!) is getting “chub rub” between my inner thighs because of short inseams on all but basketball-style shorts, which tend to be too thick and heavy with a double layer. I use Bodyglide and have tried tights, but there should be some way to be nice and cool in the summer while not tearing up my skin (the Isabel Short actually looks good for this, but I had never heard of your company before!).
My only brand loyalties are to Brooks for shoes (my feet are wonky) and SmartWool for socks– especially their double-layered blister prevention socks, which I basically wash and wear every time while ignoring my other sports socks.
Thank you so much!

August 13, 2008 at 8:10 pmokay, it sounds like my problems are the same as everyone else’s.
1. the riding shorts! i hate to run in shorts because every pair i have ever tried rides up between my thighs. for this reason, i have switched to using skirts, which has mostly solved my problem, but i would like to have the option of shorts.
2. the too short shirt! i get really tired of pulling my tank top down 50 million times during a run.
3. the unsupportive tanktop! i love to wear as few layers as possible and have purchased some tank tops that have built-in bras, but the bras in these shirts are no where near as supportive as my actual sports bras. i would love to see a tank top with a built-in bra that is just as supportive as my compression sports bras.
that about covers my gripes. thanks for listening!

August 13, 2008 at 8:10 pmAgain, repeating much of what has been said:
1. I don’t even consider wearing shorts because of the chub rub, but how about a pair of capris (NOT LEGGINGS!) that have a waist band that stays put but doesn’t muffin-top? I am totally pear-shaped and when I buy pants that fit my hips and booty, the waist is baggy and I have to pull my pants up every other block. And yes, POCKETS!!!
2. I’m totally in on the LONGER shirts thing. I don’t understand why waist length shirts became popular at the same time as low-rise pants. I am not a hoochie mama. And again, the pear shape causes any shirts that ARE long enough to get stuck on my butt shelf, hence reducing the effectiveness of the added length. A top that would hit the hip bones and still be slightly loose would be perfecto!
3. Socks I love: Balega. ‘Nuf said.

Alas, Most of my issues with fitness apparel had more to do with my body shape and willingness to buy the right size– it is kind of like blaming the dryer when your jeans are too tight. August 13, 2008 at 8:17 pmI can’t receive either because I’m way way way far away but I think my number one peeve is the assumption that women that exercise want to wear fuschia or some ugly teal or purple is sort of annoying… oh and mint that is another one that I hate… I like nice versions of red and teal and green but the “girly” ones all the sports co’s are using these days are gross.
I loved the tank with the skulls on it so that says something about my leanings. More skulls! I suppose is a little more specific than people were hoping for. But really, in the gym or on the road one time when I don’t need to really worry that what I’m wearing is “inappropriate” for X, Y, Z so why not wear skulls.
I think someone mentionned it above but I would totally by a running skirt if it same with knee or full length tights. I like to run in tights at this stage in my running life but it would be nice to have some option for coverage and mid thigh “bicycle” style shorts are unattractive unless you have less fat on your thighs than I do… I worry enough about the “muffin top” don’t need to be stressing about whatever that mid thigh fat bulge should be called.

August 13, 2008 at 9:11 pmWhat a generous offer. Hope supplies still are lastin’!
Have no idea how much has been covered, as I can’t possibly read 155 comments. Wow.
1) longer short liners. I have one pair of shorts with a liner, and they aren’t long enough. chub rub bites. hence, my favorite running shorts combo is a longish biker/spandex short with a looser short on top (b/c no one needs to see my booty in *only* spandex–eww)
2) cannot find a narrow racer back bra with enough support for my 34d girls to save my life. I found one, but the straps aren’t close enough in the middle of my back to wear with my racer back running shirts, and the bra shows. And it’s not a pretty bra that shows–the strap adjusters show, and that’s just yucky (to me, but I wear them anyway).
3) I would love to have a “bra wallet.” somehow to fit my phone & car key in a pouch or wallet that I could secure to my person without using a fuel belt. Currently, I wear two sports bras, for the support but also because I tuck my phone between my bras to keep it from getting too sweaty against my skin, and I have to tuck my car key into my inner bra between the Girls (TMI, I know–sorry, but you asked). I was just thinking tonight that it would be awesome to have a way to secure “something” to my bra that would hold all my stuff. I don’t want something around my waist. I don’t want it in/on my shoe. I don’t want it on my head. I don’t want it on the back of my shirt to flop against my back while I run. I don’t want it around my arm to rub & chafe. That pretty much leaves the chest as the only logical carrying area. And I have an iPod shuffle so it clips nicely on my outer bra and doesn’t need the “wallet” set up.
4) socks & shoes that let the sunshine through so I don’t get white ankles/feet from the summer sun that tans the rest of my legs. Oh, wait, does that defy physics? A girl can dream….

August 13, 2008 at 9:11 pmShorts that are too short, or that ride up when I run. I’m stuck wearing yoga type pants when I work out for modesties sake…I really don’t wanna show THAT much thigh when I’m on the treadmill!

August 13, 2008 at 9:26 pmFor tops more and more I have chaffing problems from sleeveless tops and sports bra seams. I do not need very much support and would really like something with thinner straps than I normally see on sports bras. I need good wicking material and preferably smell resistant. I’ve read in above comments clothes both tops and bottoms with pockets big enough to fit keys and some money in without hassle.

August 13, 2008 at 9:28 pmI would like to see bras/supportive tops that prevent βshow-through.β Iβm only an A cup, so support isnβt as big an issue as it is for most, but I do have a problem with showing what I have in public. Especially when itβs cold!
I second this. I need more padding!
I also love pockets. Running while holding a cell phone and keys gets old.

August 13, 2008 at 9:36 pmI can’t stand yoga pants that come in low rise for some weird reason so you can’t actually bend over in them. Plus that no pants ever have pockets. Where am I supposed to put my keys/phone/ipod?

August 13, 2008 at 9:44 pmI am nursing and I want a bra that is supportive enough for my relatively small but sensitive “girls” and is thick enough to absorb leakage and/or conceal nursing pads. I’m with Sherry (#159) regarding modesty issues and padding!

August 13, 2008 at 9:50 pmThings I dislike:
1. Shorts that ride up in the thighs when I run and make me look like I have “hungry crotch”.
2. Shorts/pants that do not stay put around the hip/waist area when I run and end up giving me Steve Urkel syndrome.
3. Tops that ride up – if I wanted to show my stomach when I exericse I’d just do it in a sports bra!
Things I like:
1. Fun colors to keep me “looking as bright and energetic as I feel!” or something like that. π
2. Black stuff… because we all know black is slimming and harder to see sweat on!
My (almost non-existent) breasts thank you in advance!

August 13, 2008 at 10:17 pmThanks for the geneours offer!
What do I want?
Ditto on the:
1. Longer looser (but not baggy) shirts
2. Capris or longer pants with a waist that won’t make me look like a plumber when bending over or stretching
3. Light, wicking fabrics
4. Pocketspocketspockets
5. Equal opportunity larger sizes with shape
6. Sports bras with support but no pinch
And if you ever get into the shoe business:
-Running shoes with good support – but thin enough to fit in a suitcase without taking up all the room. I had an original pair of Nike Frees that worked great for this purpose; but I wore them to death. Now the fit has changed (and don’t fit me) and their colors are ugly.
Thanks for listening!

My best jog bra is great because it wicks and I don’t bounce- however NOT keen on the lines in the front. Kindof look like I have lines drawn on my chest.
Loved my skirt sports skirt but it fell apart at the seems. The shorts were tight and I had to TUG to get them on.
Love my oiselle top and knickers, they are perfect. !!
Thanks Sally

August 13, 2008 at 10:50 pmMy biggest wants/complaints:
– I’m short and I would LOVE to be able to work out in capris, but the capris come down to my ankles, and shorts just end up at a weird lenght
– also, I’m not a misses size yet – what’s with the lack of plus sized work out equiptment for women who actually need to work out!?!
– I’d love a well-lined bra, not padded or with cups, but lined with something soft
– shorts that I don’t spend my entire workout trying to get to go back down rather than bunching up between my legs, better material?

August 14, 2008 at 5:44 amI hate that every pair of running shorts I have rides up on my hips, making running a bit uncomfortable. So lower riding, well-fitting, not super expensive shorts with a pocket for my phone and house key would be awesome!

August 14, 2008 at 6:22 amMy biggest pet peeves are as follows:
1) Sports Bra: I am a 38D and need something to hold them down for high impact activities. The ones I have that are most successful at this do not wick away sweat and sometimes leave bruises on my shoulders. I have shopped, and shopped, but found nothing that does it all. I would also like to have a high impact shaping sports bra so I can run errands before/after I work out.
2) Shorts – I think they all ride up. The ones that have the little elastic/rubber band to hold them down just pull any phantom leg hair out. I ride by bike a lot and tend to give up and wear capris.
3) Bike shirts/jackets — I know they need to be bright but, do they all need to be THAT bright? I think a gray/white jacket with a large reflecter on the back would be great.
Do they make sweat wicking underwear for ladies? That might be cool.

August 14, 2008 at 6:48 amWhat bugs me the most is that it is difficult to find PLUS SIZE clothing to wear when working out. Fat chicks should obviously be able to find workout clothes, right?
Lane Bryant tries to sell some “active wear” but it’s usually so covered with sparkles and fuzzy things that it is obviously not meant for exercise of any kind and most likely is worn by those that want to wear some bling while heading to the mall for their 100th cinnabon.
I went to Dick’s the other day. Not one single thing came close to fitting. I can’t even find a sports bra that is my size; I’m one of those rare fat chicks with small boobs. I’m a B cup and it seems that everyone else is a DDD. Argh!
Usually if I do find something that I can squeeze my butt into, it’s spandex. Thin, too tight spandex that makes sure to highlight every single bit of cellulite I own. If it’s not spandex, then the pants are made of a material that picks up every bit of lint and cat hair within a 10 mile radius.
It’s so frustrating!

August 14, 2008 at 6:56 amBottoms: The way they cling to all the WRONG spots! I have a few that cling without looking bad but for the most part, these are nonexistent!
Tops: The “muffin” roll they tend to show around the middle.
And sizing? Ummm yeah, a size small in one store is a size medium in another is a large to xL in another!

August 14, 2008 at 7:06 amI know it’s too late, but it can’t be said enough times: Larger bra sizes. Larger bra sizes. Larger bra sizes.
And I know a lot of you don’t like the bright and crazy colors, but in my world everything in my size comes in white. Sometimes a daring black, beige, or gray. I’d kill for a fuschia sport bra. Or even just BLUE.

August 14, 2008 at 7:13 amRunners Top – I’d love to have a runners top with a supportive bra built in. Right now I have to wear a sports bra under the top for support – and I’m relatively small – just hate the jiggle. And, since you’ve asked – I’d like to see longer running shorts. The standard shorts bunch up in the crotch – very uncomfortable. (As for color – I like what one person said – fun bright colors that make you smile when you wear them. I am tired of black!)

August 14, 2008 at 7:26 amMy biggest problem with sports bras is feeling like I don’t get the necessary support for activities that involve any type of jumping or hopping motion – i.e. running, step aerobics, etc.
I look for bras that have an adjustable strap so that I can tighten it according to my activity (as opposed to the bras that you just slip on over your head). I also like a bra that feels very sturdy and almost like it is sucking you in so much, that you can’t move, even if you tried.
Regarding shorts, anything that doesn’t ‘ride up’ is great with me. With longer shorts I feel like I am constantly pulling them down. I prefer shorter, running style shorts for running or spinning.

August 14, 2008 at 7:59 amI hate the fact that I am a pretty small girl on top (not tiny, but far from large)… and I have problems just finding support! I feel like the pull over the head sport bras are just like a shirt…. they squash my boobs into one uniboob, and then I feel like the tightness of the bra is pushing my boobs together and down instead of separating and supporting!
frustrating. π
Helen says
August 14, 2008 at 8:05 amIt’s the seams and the uniboob. Every single time I buy bra/top/shorts with seams and then proceed to run on a humid day I end up with all kinds of chafing even using Body Glide. One particularly bad day I had an actual blister right in between the girls! The uniboob speaks for itself I think.

August 14, 2008 at 8:22 amI’m with the folks about the shorts that ride up–those of us with generous thighs, which I suspect is much of American adult womanhood, just can’t wear those loose shorts that creep up with every step you take. I don’t think they’d need to be skin tight a la bike shorts, but slimmer and longer in the leg and maybe experiment with different fabrics that won’t hitch up in embarrassing ways.

August 14, 2008 at 9:02 amHi. Thanks for the generous offer. I’m new to exercising, so I may not have much to offer. But I would like to say that as I tackled weight loss and middle age, I’d really like shorts that sit at the waist. Those of us over 50 want to look good, but I have to have something covering my belly and navel. And the shorts shouldn’t be too short. Hey, we’re not as young or taut as we used to be, but at least we’re making the effort. I also like bras that fasten in the back. I’m apparently not coordinated enough to put one on over my head. Thanks again.

August 14, 2008 at 10:19 amMy top fustration is sleves on tee shirts. in the summer i like tanks, but in the winter, i always pick tee shirts. i hate when the sleves are too long and you feel like they are constricting your arms when running. so i try to roll them and then shimmy my sports bra strap over them to hold them in place. then by the time you’ve got the second sleve rolled and secured, the first sleve starts unrolling. ugh!

My biggest pet peeve is sports bras. I can either buy a sports bra which makes me look like I have a uni-boob in a different colors OR buy a plain white one that attempts to seperate but doesn’t come in colors.
Wouldn’t it make sense for sports bra makers to offer more variety instead of limiting us?

August 14, 2008 at 12:15 pmI agree with one of the above posters about capri’s being pants on us short people. I would love to be able to wear a pair and not look like I just have high waters on.

August 14, 2008 at 12:27 pmI think I missed out on the giveaway but hope you are still reading. My biggest pet peeve is pockets! Or rather, the lack of them. Why why why don’t women’s clothes have pockets like men? I go running, biking, anything outside, I want my keys and cellphone along. I go to the gym, I need to carry my little electronic workout recorder thing around the gym, and various other small things that always seem to be necessary. A place to put my earrings when I realize I’m on the gym floor and forgot to take them off in the locker room. Please, for heavens sakes, pockets. With zipper or velcro closure, because I move baby, and don’t want my stuff flying out.

August 14, 2008 at 2:36 pmPeeves:
If I find a sports bra that is priced low enough for me to buy more than one, it has absolutely no support.
If I find one that had adequate support, I have to skip my mortgage payment to afford it, and in doing so, contribute to the downfall of the economy. Good for boobs, bad for America!
Shorts – I have resorted to buying those men’s meshy shorts because they’re longer and don’t ride up as much as women’s shorts do. Most of them don’t have pockets, though. How about a longer women’s short with a little zip inner pocket?

August 14, 2008 at 6:28 pmMy biggest complaint about athletic apparel is that most of it is only flattering on chicks who are already skinny. Fat chicks need something to wear while trying to get thin. Everything seems to be super tight super short perfect for showing our fat rolls to the world at a vulnerable time.

Tops/ Short tops or those that ride up the sides when running, makes me crazy – then I try tucking them in to keep down and end up looking ridiculous.

My biggest peeve is tops not being long enough for tall girls like me! I ‘m going to have to wear a unitard for my next triathlon b/c the tri top I already bought is way too short–it’s like a half-shirt on me. August 24, 2008 at 6:03 pmYou don’t need to offer any prizes to get your responses ’cause we are all annoyed by the workout clothes… if someone would listen, that’d be great! Prizes are a bonus π
I hate shirts that aren’t long enough… I hate shirts that are too tight on the boobs and too loose on the hips so they end up flying. I want my shirt to go halfway down my arse… I need coverage.
I hate that I am overweight and can not find exercise clothes. What am I expected to workout in?! I won’t go to a gym unless I am feeling comfortable in my clothes and I shouldn’t have to wear my boyfriends ex-fat clothes just to go.
I hate white gym socks. Hate, hate, hate. I’d like to see some black gym socks with the swick material.
And, my shirts? I like to have good arm coverage on it… say, like – inbetween my elbow and my arm-pit. I don’t want to show my entire arm and yet, it’s too hot having a t-shirt go all the way down to my elbow and it looks dumb.
That’s it! Ohhh, I’m sure there’s more but that’s enough complaining for today.
