Subtitle: and some other breaking news.
I was totally shocked pleasantly surprised at how many of you decided to jump in & do the MizFit Motivational Matchups (who said we bumbling band types arent joiners?!).
I also received more than a few TELL ME WHAT THE HELL THIS ENTAILS & THEN I SHALL TELL YOU IF IM IN messages, too.
So here goes.
All laid out.
In short snappy nonMizFit’y (if by MizFit’y you mean rambly—-which I do) prose.
* Im all about the accountability partners. Peeps whom we may not even SEE on a regular basis but who help keep us on track with regards to our goals (which are, all together now, really just DREAMS WITH TIME LINES).
* Because I have had such fantastic support from people Ive never met (you know who you are…) I wanted to set you all up with the same kind of encouraging dynamic. Random pairings of supportive partners (IMO we need NOT share goals in order to cheer each other on to success. Sometimes I think it’s better *not* to share goals so the other person can be impartial/offer insights not tarnished by her own mission/goal striving).
* SUPPORTIVE. HEALTHY. These words are key and, since we are all grownass women (no men jumped in the fray), I shall leave it at that, People. If you cant envision how this might become UNhealthy with regards to encouragement—–email me. Ill happily enlighten you.
* What does this entail? Whatever you want it to entail!
Emails, instant messages, twitters, text messages, phone calls, small tokens of motivation mailed to each other—it’s all up to you & your partner! What I do suggest is that you cut & paste the below (or generate your own similar missive) by way of introduction and then let the correspondence take on a life of its own.
*EDITED TO SAY DONT SEND THE BELOW TO ME (Miz. needs to work on post clarity I think) but when you receive your matchname send it to *them.*

Guess who was invited (along with 14 other fab bloggers) by Quaker Oats to spend a fun filled weekend at Quaker Oatsā headquarters in Chicago.
Not only will I be able to learn more about Quaker, its business, and its commitment to heart health BUT I’ll get to ramble at them about what the Bumbling Band wants in a their products (more on this notion tomorrow).
And (I know. Even I was a little surprised at the tripandmore) we’ll have access to a registered dietician who works with Quaker to help us learn more about heart healthy diets & exercise plans.
Please to don yer thinking caps bandannas —–Im sure Ill be needing your input, queries, and outfit suggestions (it.cold.there.)
And, last but not least, we are getting a post from the amazing, inimitable needeth no introduction Jillian.
(please to refer back to HERE and return back to, well, up in herre for her insights on 10.22)
EDITED TO SAY: OKAY, People. I ALREADY have a QQ (aka: Quaker Question) for you in comment 10…thanks in advance.

And I think you’re doing a great thing with these accountability matchups.
This would be a good time to say something clever but I got nothing this morning. Perhaps I need a big bowl of oatmeal.
Or more coffee. More coffee is always good.

It’s damned expensive (*instant anyway*) in my book. Tell ’em to take it down a peg. :^ )
How exciting – Chicago. Never been there, but it is like 3 hours from here. Cold is relative, friend. LOL You’ll be fine.
And I’ve done Jillian = dvds and her online program. So cool to have Jillian coming here. She seems EVIL on tv, but she’s got a good heart.
TTFN. Have a nice day.

October 14, 2008 at 5:44 amYep, Annette (& all who have followed up) all the emails are saved and you shall get your matches this weekend.
ILL POST WHEN THEY ARE SENT (or, more likely, twitter…it shows up above as well) and THEN if you didnt get a match definitely email me.
but you will.
and the oats? you KNOW Im gonna be highER protein approaching them.
reason #91283719873 I want an oat’y option with, say, 20 grams of protein?
ALL THE MONEY I CAN SAVE IN BAGGIES. Even when I reuse them they eventually wear out (rubbermaid and my diaperbag have hit an impass) and in this economy every bit counts.

October 14, 2008 at 6:02 amTHAT’S SO EXCITING about Quaker! I am so excited for you. I want to come over and make a film of it all Mizfit Does Chicago. And I’m excited about Jillian too, I’ve decided the Biggest Loser does her no favours in the personality stakes.
I want a high high high protein oatmeal because I NEED protein with my carbs in the morning otherwise I’m starving again by 10am. If I put in a scoop of protein powder into my oats it sees me right through until lunch, it’s so much more satisfying. And you can choose fun flavours. And because I want to grow up big and strong.

YEP MELANY, that’s it. I need to have protein too with my carbs (COMPLEX OR NOT for this MizFit) as if I dont Im famished 15 minutes later.

October 14, 2008 at 6:30 amI’m not the least bit interested in having an accountability partner. I have enough trouble believing my excuses myself.
Oatmeal questions? Oh, yeah. Are they developing more and better oatmeal dessert recipes i.e. cookies, squares, etc. And how about wild oats? It strikes me as a marketing ploy and nothing more as wild oats are simply them as volunteer the next year when you’ve gone and planted something else.
Tricia 2 says
October 14, 2008 at 6:39 amI want high protein oatmeal because I need to eat something like 100 grams of protein a day or else I spend all of the next day throwing up. (don’t ask, I have no idea, and neither does the nutritionist who stumbled onto that realization).
Also because it’ll up the protein in whatever I use the oatmeal to bake.
Jill says
October 14, 2008 at 6:47 amDang Miz – I feel like you are on the edge of celebrity and I’ll be able to say, “Oh MizFit? I’ve been reading her blog for years – we’re tight!!” =)
Lots of cool happenings up in herrrrrrrre!!
I’m also for more protein in the oatmeal. But can you ask them to make it a little less gaggy? I always gag when I try to eat oatmeal, but I like it (the oatmeal, not the gagging).

October 14, 2008 at 6:56 amThe Bag Lady hangs her head in shame, as she is clueless about this Jillian of whom you speak. Does this mean Baggie needs to watch television? Bleech.
The trip to Chicago sounds terrific! Tell the Quaker company for me to take the damned artificial sweeteners out of their weight-control stuff! I have a whole box of it (well, okay, one package is missing) I’d like to send back to them, thankyouverymuch, because all I can taste is the damned artificial sweetener.
~~sigh~~
One day I’ll learn to take my glasses with me to the grocery store so I can read the small print!!!!
Right??? Of course right!!!!

I’m an oatmeal fan but I buy so much of it that I go to the co-op and get it in bulk because it is way cheaper. Maybe if Quaker sold their oats in larger containers, for less, I would buy theirs.
But, I love, love, love the Quaker Oat Squares and will sometimes buy a box as a treat.

Oh, if only my blood didn’t run brown with about 20 years of Hostess cakes residue and Diet Coke, maybe I’d have a chance in hell of being asked to give my input on oatmeal. You’re getting much nutritional foodstuff respect! Rock on!
Steph. says
October 14, 2008 at 7:38 amWow! How exciting (both about the oat trip and Jillian!) I just bought Jillian’s latest book so I’m really thrilled she’ll be posting here!
I have Type II diabetes and really, my old trainer had me eat scrambled egg whites WITH my higher protein quaker oats in the morning. The result? I didn’t get hungry, but I literally felt I had to shovel down so much food that I would be sick each morning.
More protein would be GREAT! And, while we’re at it–how about a little bacon flavoring, just to satisfy us Southern gals? They do it with grits, don’t they?
(grin)

October 14, 2008 at 7:51 amEEEEP, on so many, many counts. You know I’m all about the Jillian. TBL doesn’t even scratch the surface of the person she is…reading her book, checking out her website, listening to her radio show – you get a much better sense of who she is.
She yells because she cares. š
I’m SO excited about the Quaker trip! You are definitely heading into celebrity territory and I can’t wait to name-drop when you’re all super-famous. Hey, and after you get your book deal, send me the name of your agent. š
As for protein – I’d LOVE to see higher-protein oatmeal, so I don’t have to add stuff to it or eat meat or eggs with it. Oatmeal alone is enough to fill me up, but I don’t eat it as often as I should because it doesn’t have the protein I need. I eat protein with every meal (yeah, all six) because it’s the only way to keep my blood sugar steady.
I agree that they need to dump the artificial sweeteners – I use them, but I can definitely add them myself. And I don’t like the “weight control” name – I think the “lower sugar” worked better, because lots of people avoid sugar who aren’t trying to lose weight. But that’s non-marketing-savvy me. š
Very exciting goings-on up in here!

October 14, 2008 at 9:02 amI would want a higher protein oatmeal because it’s my main breakfast buddy. How can they make it higher protein? And I”d vote for flavors WITHOUT sugar such as cinnamon and apple etc but no sweetness. Tell them to get with it.
You are going to QO? Is that like OA? I can’t say I am jealous but I can say that you will definitely learn. I wonder if they will want you to be a big time oats-person? (spoatsperson?)

October 14, 2008 at 9:08 ammarianne? What would the Bumbling Band be without you?
And POD?
Back in the *day* MetRx made a fab high protein oatmeal in packets which was, I think, merely their shakemix added to oats and was surprisingly VanillaFabulous.
There are styrofoam containered high protein options out there now (cumbersome IMO. I think made by musclemilk?) but no packets I like….
And if they added flavorless whey/soy/veggie powder it need not be vanilla.
I’m passionate about my oats needing protein huh?
I know….

I’m like Steph in not being able to stomach too much in the morning, so I imagine protein mixed in with my oats would be an exciting development. I’m not awake enough in the morning to prepare anything that takes more than two steps (pour in bowl. add milk. microwave. okay that’s three steps.) so it would be nice to have protein already mixed in.

I love oatmeal but I too gag especially in the morning before a long run. I just cant get past the texture of it or of peanut butter at 5:30am.
I love love love Jillian and actually bob too but if I was on Biggest loser (I should be as a wild card, wouldn’t me and my 110lbs really screw things up) I would want to be on Jillians team. Actually I would want to be her best friend but whatever, I want to be EVERYONES best friend.

October 14, 2008 at 1:05 pmoh.. did I ever tell ya I met the fine Ms. Jillian at BlogHer Chicago? (along with Chloe Doa.. y’all can turn ten shades of green right now…)? Her arms are hypnotizing! I’d aspire to her guns.
Warm and caring and tough at the same time.
Can’t wait for a post by her.
And Quaker trip? Very cool. Wish I had a good oatmeal question to ask them…. but I’m still here fixating on Jillian’s guns…

October 14, 2008 at 1:57 pm“Find me a find, catch me a catch”- okay, I couldn’t resist.
Very cool about the Quaker trip. Will it really be that cold? (I heard it was 84 degrees for the marathon on Sunday- then again, after TX weather, maybe you need wool and fleece for 84, LOL). My suggestion is layers, and comfy shoes (but I’m confident you’ve got that covered).
I don’t know that I’m for a high-protein oatmeal. I had to cut back to making my oatmeal with 1/3 C. instead of 1/2 C. because I was too full. I make mine with 1 Tb. ground flax, and lots of cinnamon. Then after it cools, I add soy milk. And I’m usually full for a good 4 hrs at least (then again, maybe it’s because I’m a “slow oxidizer”- anyone, anyone? chirpchirp).
About the pre-packaged oatmeal with flax, it would need to be refrigerated (for optimal nutritional benefit of the flax) so maybe that’s why no one has ever made it. But I usually buy the store brand of oatmeal or buy in bulk because it’s so much cheaper. However, I do have a question- what’s the difference between regular oatmeal and quick oats? I’ve compared labels and the nutrition info seems to be the same (calories, fiber), so the only difference I can see is in the cooking time. ?????
About Jillian, it’s going on my calendar. I am totally excited! I want her arms and abs (and also her haircut now, too). She’s definitely all about the tough love. So thank you for not taking “no” for an answer.
BTW, I thought your onward and oatward was funny (as was the person who wrote “spoatsperson”- hahaha).

To be serious for a millisecond.
I love the quote:
To the world you are one person….but to one person you are the world.
And all our *collective* excitement for Jillian has me ponder how we are *all* Jillian to someone.
Whether it’s through your blog or simply how you live— to SOMEONE you are the amazing fabulous inspirational figure she may be to YOU.
Food for thought as you go about your day (you know, if anyone reads down this far).
And.

October 14, 2008 at 2:48 pmOh I hope to be a Jillian to someone. I have so many Jillians in my life (including you Miz!).
Hmm… I’ve never tried MetRx, can you get it at a a sports nutrition store? How do you use it exactly. (with or without oats since we’re on the subject).

October 14, 2008 at 3:01 pmHi Tina.
when I do protein in my oatmeal I use soy or whey and the lowest carb count I can find (since Ive all those fab heart healthy complex carbs in the oats).

October 14, 2008 at 3:20 pmI never thought I would need one – I always held myself accountable – but recent changes in my life have left me without any motivation.
For the first time – I get it.

October 14, 2008 at 3:24 pmWhat EXCITING and fun things you have going on. Laura N. totally nailed it about your giving and giving. I’m in for the match — just gotta do my email (and figure out my “Richard” nickname — AND I can’t wait to see what that foreshadowing is about!). I LOVE the windy city (but alas a Cubs playoff game won’t be on your tour).

October 14, 2008 at 5:59 pmOMG! I want to add my “I LOVE JILLIAN” to the mix, too. I would give almost anything to work out with her just once…because that is probably all i could handle. HA! My own trainer sort of pushes me like she does the peeps on Biggest Loser, but he’s more of a Bob. I love how they are showing her kinder, more caring side, too, so that we know it’s not all screaming and yelling. OMG…she’s so amazing! MizFit, can you get her autograph for me????? lol

October 14, 2008 at 6:44 pmThat is so cool about the QA trip. Wow! A higher protein oatmeal? Wow that would make life easy(er). Right now I stir in a scoop of my whey protein. It would be one less step at mealtime. Love that idea.

October 14, 2008 at 6:46 pmHmm, QA trip? Does Oatmeal now start with an A? Hmm. LOL! I read that back to myself, after posting it of course and was like, QA? Huh? Sorry should’ve been QO!

October 14, 2008 at 7:11 pmcool about the QO trip.
i agree that a higher-protein oatmeal woould be great.
i would also be happy with a lower-sugar sweetened oatmeal (why are those things so sugary? i always have to dilute them with more oatmeal. man.)

October 16, 2008 at 10:15 pmI think Jillian is an amazing person. She knows her stuff and is very insightful. A perfect mix of tough and caring.
I dunno if you are interviewing her or have already or how it works, but if I could ask JIllian *one* question, it would be this:
How can I get a good workout in with bad knees? I can’t do any lunges or squats or stairs. I can’t even do a treadmill. I ride my recumbent bike and I lift weights for my arms, but when I watch the Biggest Loser, I always think, “Here I am at 39, and I would KILL to be able to force myself to run on a treadmill or do squats until my eyes popped out. But I can’t. What can I do to push myself?”
