January 5, 2009 at 3:33 amGot a question… you might be able to answer… does dietgirl the book have two different versions with two different kind of covers… the mint/blue/green cover and the cover with the super hero woman on the cover. Are those two the same book or did she write two books?
dietgirl says
January 5, 2009 at 3:54 amHi Rosie – the superhero version is the original UK book which came out a year ago. The US edition is the blue one π

January 5, 2009 at 6:27 amHey Miz, starting the week with a bang indeed!!! π
So far so good anyway.
I love DietGirl… her book was amazing. Also she’s the reason I started looking at weight loss/fitness blogs and eventually the reason why I started my own blog!
So everyone go out and buy her book! You certainly won’t regret it.
tokaiangel: I am always cold too!! Maybe I’ll go with Ms Frosty … though I think that makes me sound terribly unsocial or something!

Superhero name for Bag Lady? WonderRancherWoman. (as in, wonder what the hell she’s doing wearing that stupid costume with those things on her wrists!)

January 5, 2009 at 7:14 amLove the party hat! The book sounds great, too. I think I’ve come across Diet Girl’s blog before, but I’ll have to get on board.
Since the Hubs has sort of a Wonder Woman fascination, my super hero name would probably be something related like Wonder Runner, but that doesn’t really make sense since I am certainly not a wonder at running. So maybe it would be something more accurate like Info-Bot, because I’m plenty good at searching for and reading the info, but not always good at application.
P.S. I think this week I’ll be working on my fruit and veggie mini-vision board, so I’ll for sure take pictures and post, just for you!!

January 5, 2009 at 7:20 amI ordered my own copy from england when it first came out – and loved every bit of it.
I had actually read Shauna’s whole blog – went back to the beginning and read my way thru – several years ago. She is one of my favorites. Reading the blog and reading the book were actually different experiences – the blog was written as she went – the book was written after having gotten there – very interesting to read both views.

Caroline says
January 5, 2009 at 8:25 amMy superhero name would have to be FarmGirl. I can (and do) carry full 5-gallon water buckets in each hand (40 lbs apiece) and, during the Great Ice Storm Blackouts (just last month, when we were without power for 7 days) I was hauling said water buckets 100 feet uphill (again, one in each hand for balance) from the stream to the barn. Because, after all, no electricity means no water from the well (electric pump). I can also carry a 60-lb hay bale in each hand (although I usually tote those one at a time) and carry 50 lb bags of grain from the pickup, across the yard, and up the stairs in the barn to the feed room in the loft.
Now I just have to work at getting the awesome body I deserve!

January 5, 2009 at 9:43 amThe books where I want the author to be my new best friend are the best. They are also few and far between, and sometimes are spoiled by email exchanges with the writer in question. I sense that Shauna would not do that to us and will put this on my list! (I s’pose you’re not going to disclose who the author is who’s supposed to be not so nice in person who you mentioned is?)
My superhero name…Confidence Woman. I would have the power to shoot people with arrows infusing them with self-esteem. Myself included. For now, I have to make do with words and actions, not arrows.

January 5, 2009 at 10:41 amSo, you couldn’t read a snippet from the book because it’s so engaging there was no good stopping point? Sounds like a winning read to me.
My superhero name would have to be MapChick.
My superpower is always being able to give the correct directions to complete strangers when asked, which happens more than you’d think. Whether on a long run the middle of nowhere, riding my bike to the grocery store, or on vacation in a completely new city… Works out well, since my secret identity is that of a mild mannered mom & cartographer.

January 5, 2009 at 11:14 amLove the name! And kudos to anyone who can diet while living in Scotland (my limited experience was that they deep fry EVERYTHING – including meat pies…even I was craving veggies when I left there).
And look at you being the all important kick off for a book tour – so proud to have known you when you were ultra cool but lesser known!
Marste says
January 5, 2009 at 11:15 amOh, I love her blog. Haven’t read the book yet, though.
Um, I already have a superhero name. The name and explanation follow, but be warned: it is some SERIOUS TMI.
My name? BOOB WOMAN. No, really. The reason is pretty self-explanatory. The joke in my family is that the average woman’s cup size is a C, and all the women in my family are smaller than that – except me. So they figure I got all their missing cup sizes. (On the plus side, when I’m thin, I have a FANTASTIC body. AND I can gain a fair amount of weight before I look overweight, because it takes a lot to balance out the boobs.)
So, yeah. Boob Woman: Defender of women everywhere!!! (There is a picture floating around somewhere of me, about 17 years old, in the family room, ripping open my shirt a la Superman. I was wearing a pink and blue Wonderbra underneath. You can see my parents in the background of the picture: Mom cracking up, Dad looking a little bemused. Yeah. We’re weird in my family.)

January 5, 2009 at 12:00 pmThe Quilted Elephant. I don’t know. I am deeply enmeshed in quilting this week, and I have always loved elephants. Of course, my nickname for much of my overweight life was Elly, and I liked it. I don’t see myself as an elephant or anything anymore, but I love them even more–gentle and powerful. Not so bad for a superhero. And actually a quilted cape would be quite beautiful on an elephant.

Laura says
January 5, 2009 at 12:28 pmHmm, this is REALLY hard. My first instinct is that it would have to be Princess something, because I’m so girly and feminine – but can princesses be superheroes? I’m all about alliteration (like Wonder Woman) but I can’t think of a good P word to describe me. I’m a perfectionist, but Princess Perfect just sounds ridiculously narcissistic.
Therefore, I’ll take a cue from The Incredibles (one of my favorite movies) and call myself Super something. Super… yeah, I can’t think of anything to go with that.
Okay, I’m going to instead take a cue from another Bumbling Band Member and figure out my super power first. I would love to be able to turn back time – not only to do things over and keep myself from making mistakes, but also so I could get extra time for stuff (like sleeping and working out!). My name can be TimeGirl!
I give up. That will have to be it.

Pubsgal says
January 5, 2009 at 12:46 pmI started following the Dietgirl blog a few months ago, and I’ve read through a number of the archives. “Dang,” I thought to myself. “This girl is *funny*.” I preordered the US book awhile back, happily received it on New Year’s Eve, and spent the evening (and a few days after…only because of family/job demands, otherwise it would have been devoured in one sitting) reading this book.
Wow! I’m equally smitten. I wanted to write a great review for my own blog…but I wouldn’t be able to do it justice. I’d just gush and people would probably go, “Yeah, right, she probably says that about every book she actually has time to read these days, she’s so desperate for a read at all.” (But darned if I wasn’t going to post about it anyhow. π ) Not so: I really am particular; this book was BRILLIANT!
Some things I loved about the book:
– Numerous laugh-out-loud funny parts
– Parts that made me feel sympathetic, that I could relate to, and that made me ponder my own quest
– The themes: Fitness is not *only* about the scale or a pant size. Don’t wait until you’re at the “ideal” weight to do the things you really want to do. Don’t let fear stop you.
The only drawbacks?
– Being irritated at what or whom ever pulled me away during reading
– Having to *wait* until she (hope! hope! hope!) publishes another book! Don’t wait as long as that OTHER Edinburgh author, please!
Hmm…my own superhero name? I’d go with either “The Winsome Warrior” or “The Whimsical Warrior.” (Years ago I received a fortune cookie fortune that read: “Your winsome smile will be your sure protection.” I’ve always loved the words “winsome” and “whimsical”…”warrior” more in the context of being engaged in the daily struggle to achieve fitness. Plus it starts with “w,” I’m a sucker for alliteration.)
p.s. – Miz, please exclude me from the drawing, since I already have a copy and some other lucky person should get it instead.
SO SO WELL PUT, PUBSGAL. SEE, PEOPLE? IT ISNT JUST ME WHO HATH FALLEN UNDER THE DIET GIRL SPELL

–Mizfit, I have to say you have one of the lowest speaking voices I’ve ever heard. (I’ve noticed this before.) If you can carry a tune, you could become a famous contralto. They’re very rare, so you’d have very little competition.–

January 5, 2009 at 7:01 pmI’m so glad you wore that hat. I’m not a big fan of Cats =), but I’m sure that’s a great book.
I took a psychology class in college and part of the grade was wearing a BBK crown in class. Something about putting us all on the same page, and losing the ego so we would be more open to learning new things. Smart teacher, I guess it worked.

January 5, 2009 at 7:40 pmI’d like to be a mother-warrior but my hubby is really the super hero up in herre. I missed lots of your good posts/comments over the holidays, but would like to add to the tat comments..I have friends who tattooed their wedding bands. I can’t tell you how many people said “oooh, isn’t that permanent?” the point….
I loved the idea and wonder what yours will be??? I got my ears pierced for my midlife non-crisis. They swelled up like golf balls. I should have gone for the tat!

January 5, 2009 at 11:21 pmLove the post today. The hat is just the ticket! I too bought Shauna’s book from Amazon UK and loved, loved, loved it! Especially the cute little graphic on each page. So don’t enter me in the drawing, I just wanted a super hero name! LOL
Mine would be – The Two Wheel Menace. A chick on a bike with an attitude!

January 6, 2009 at 1:46 amShauna’s blog was the very first one I ever followed years ago. I wasn’t ready to tackle my own weight loss then, but loved to follow her journey.
My superhero name would have to The Gigglepuss IcePhantom….I’m very good at lurking and blending in to hear what people don’t want me to…I have amazing balance in the snow and ice….and my giggling can cause villians to temporarily lose power!

January 6, 2009 at 1:47 amOK, round two. I just read a post by Pubsgal, and realized this book has everything I could ever want to read in it =). It may even be the first book I finish in 5 years.
My super hero name would beβ¦the obvious βFitness Surferβ
I signed a love note to the hubby the other day with love and an illustration of a little stick figure girl on a wave with weights in her hands doing military press. It was surprisingly good and I may use it for my logo =) Then, I can add biceps as I gain more muscle =).

I’m so “chiarunner: the pottery that runs”
Just add water yo, watch it grow (but hopefully not the posterior region. that means I’m not adding water. That’s so beer. But that’s besides the point.)
I’m so grabbing a copy. DietGirl sounds like a riot :-). She’s lucky to have you in her almighty chub fighting band of merry men!
