Subtitle: this blogger has me (AND Ren Man!) completely, wholly & utterly considering this race as a fitness goal. As a result I am, again, OFF AND RUNNING.
This one’s a short post.
A gift to myself.
Im living not blogging.
Taking care of my health.
My glutes from the ‘puter
Im peeling away.
Embracing the cool
(here in *mornings* anyway)
Today I am running.
(or wogging. we’ll see.)
Shakin’ up the workout.
MAKING time for me.
Im DOing not TRYing.
Not saying: I may run.
I’m pushing my limits
some OUTSIDETHEBOX fun.
Are you in a rut?
Are your workouts stale?
Are you on autopilot?
Does routine prevail?
Make it SHAKE IT UP Tuesday.
Just change something small.
Try this? Maybe this?
Doesnt matter at all!
If youre so inclined

Yes this is really me running. Yes this is how happy I look. Yes that look lasts for about 3.2 seconds.
YES.
I really think after eons of “I mightcould do that” 2010 will be my year to finally run a marathon.

From the aforementioned Dirty Red Gear.
a RED running skirt (I totally covet the red.) and a tech shirt.
You can be entered to win for the lowlow price of a comment below sharing how YOU will join me and shake up your Tuesday.
Please to hit us all up in the comments.
USA only. Winner announced Friday.

September 8, 2009 at 2:33 amWell, my Tuesday is almost gone, and it wasn’t shaken up too much. But I did spend a good part of the day outside which was really nice.
Go, go MizFit Marathon!
Melissa (The Daily Mel) says
September 8, 2009 at 2:57 amWell, you can leave me out of the drawing since I can’t quite fit into Dirty Red gear … yet! I just wanted to wish you well in your marathon training! When I trained for my half marathon, it was all wogging all the time. LOL That was actually about 3 years ago, and I was calling it wogging then. I didn’t realize I was such a trendsetter. 😉

September 8, 2009 at 3:24 amMiz,
Welll…I’m thinking I should be left out of this give away too…as cool as that running skirt is…I’m pretty sure most people would look strange at me (and maybe call the authorities). Not that strange is a problem…in this case though, I’ll stick to shorts….
Me? Well, I had a good hard workout yesterday, and this morning my body is sore! I had planned a bike ride, and then when I got up, I was leaning toward “no”. Now…I’m thinking the “shake it up” might be to get on that bike and ride anyway…
Andrew(AJH) says
September 8, 2009 at 3:49 amYeah, you wouldn’t want to see me in that skirt either.
I think it is so cool that you’re planning the marathon, and am so looking forward to some more running content on Mizfit!
That is a great photo – you certainly seem to have the style going ! Now all you gotta do is keep the mood going for 4 hours (?) rather than 3.2 seconds!

September 8, 2009 at 4:03 amThat’s hilarious! I was planning my first ever “Try Something New Tuesday” post for today! Ummm…great minds think alike?!
Good for you for shaking it up-variety is the spice of life!

September 8, 2009 at 4:05 amI’m going to shake it up this Tuesday by getting my kids to set up a ballgame in the backyard! And then I’ll pitch for them!

September 8, 2009 at 4:07 amAre you on autopilot?
Does routine prevail?
YES!!!!
How did you know? 🙂
Although today might not be my day as I’m a little food hungover.
Maybe on Wednesday 🙂
RickyRae says
September 8, 2009 at 4:11 amMiz, is that you running outside without reading a trashy magazine?!!! I’m shocked! LOL!!! 🙂
I’m shaking up this Tuesday with a dance rehearsal!
Meredith says
September 8, 2009 at 4:25 amLOL @ RickyRae as I had the same thought when I read you are doing a marathon:
Where will the Star Magazine go?!
Are you going to write about it for us?
I’m a nonrunner and never plan to run but think it would be interesting to read about anyway.
Erica says
September 8, 2009 at 4:29 amGreat work out the running- yayyy! I’m considering a half and may just go for it!
Shelley B says
September 8, 2009 at 4:40 amGo Carla! I love the 3.2 second happy look…boy can I relate to that! I am really looking forward to reading about your marathon training, as I’m in the *thinking* process of a 5K (see what running a mile will do to you?!?).
I like the Dirty Red gear – even saw a much cooler headband then the one I’m currently rockin! And a running skort? Very cool!
Nan says
September 8, 2009 at 4:42 amI’m jealous as I don’t think I could ever get my boyfriend to run with me.
Do you think you will do the full?
The half?
Joanna says
September 8, 2009 at 5:06 amI love this stretch goal of yours, Miz. I have a few goals of my own swirling around in my head at the moment. Your marathon training is inspiring me to put my thoughts into action.

September 8, 2009 at 5:16 amI’m going to yoga today after a short run. I have been trying to add yoga in once a week because I know the extra stretching is good for me. I don’t stretch nearly enough!
Someone just asked me this weekend if I wanted to run the Austin Marathon. I’ve done halves before and don’t know if I really want to run that distance…
Diana says
September 8, 2009 at 5:18 amShake up a Tuesday! haha…hmm…hadn’t thought about it. I will get going on the few challenges I wanted to go with.
GO MIZFIT GO!!! 🙂 Good for you!

September 8, 2009 at 5:18 amWelcome to the world of “I’m crazy and decided to run a marathon”! I ask myself WTF I was thinking every weekend… 🙂
Hmm, it’s my strength day today, but to shake it up I think I might try some new moves.. or throw in some jump rope for cardio in between sets! (That’s big, I hate jump rope.)
Good luck!
Miz says
September 8, 2009 at 5:18 ampeeking in as I get the day going & plan what I can do with the MIL today (thoughts? ;)).
As far as the running I think Ren Man may have already dropped out on me—–we’ll see.
Me? I’m just running.
I do have a training program targeted @ Austin on 2.14.09 but for the most part I’m NOT focusing on the larger looming goal but on running.
On the next 30 days of getting this to be a habit.
(Call Morgan Spurlock)

September 8, 2009 at 5:26 amBack in May, I signed up for a half marathon even though I had never ever ever run in my life. So now I have to train for it. Which P.S., requires running. I hate running, but I *do* love the challenge it provides. It’s hard work for me.
Today is a run day for me, but I’m already talking myself out of it. So that means I’m really going to need an extra mental push from myself. Even though it’s nasty humid out, I will go. Even though I already don’t want to go. I’m going to shake things up by simply sticking to my plan and run anyway. So I’m going into my day with this thought:
“This is for me. Not anyone else. No one can make me do it. No one can do it for me. I need to do this for me!”
Miz says
September 8, 2009 at 5:30 amGO HEATHER GO HEATHER GO!!!!
Joy says
September 8, 2009 at 5:33 amToday is a forced active rest day. Forced, because I want to run. Active rest, because yesterday’s 10k was very hilly, and I should be kind to my knees with a long puppy walk, instead.
I can’t wait to follow your training for the Austin Marathon or Half. I’m signed up for three half marathons this autumn (including one on Halloween – how much fun could that be?), plus took the leap last week way out of my comfort zone, and signed up for the ING Georgia Marathon in March 2010. Still studying training plans to put together something which will work for me. It’s rather daunting.
please, Please, PLEASE, let the random number generator pick me for this give away. With the side slit, my long run legs would look awesome in that skirt. And since it’s red, I’m pretty sure it will make me superhero fast.

September 8, 2009 at 5:40 amI don’t comment frequently and wanted to today to share a thought.
I hope you take this the right way.
I read the title to your post and initially thought:
Oh great. Miz has become another blogger I can not relate to. Won’t be reading her much now.
I want to lose close to 80 pounds and running a marathon will never ever be in my future.
After I read your poem (love it!) I realized it doesn’t have to be a marathon for me.
Marisa (Trim The Fat) says
September 8, 2009 at 5:42 amWhoo hooo! Look at you go with your running self!
Training for a Marathon – so exciting!
I plan to shake it up, but not til tomorrow! For 2 years, I have been exercising alone in my dungeon(basement) or outdoors (walking and running). But, this year, I decided to join a gym and be out amongst the people! I start tomorrow…and I’m petrified…but, excited, too!

September 8, 2009 at 5:51 amSchool started today, and I find myself in a quiet house by 7:15. I think there is exercise in my near future.
I already have a cute Dirty Red outfit 😛 But for those of you who don’t? It’s awesome stuff and fits nicely and I don’t have what one would call an athletic build.
Lance, couldn’t you just call it a modest running kilt?
🙂
Fab Kate says
September 8, 2009 at 5:53 amactually, while that skirt wouldn’t fit me yet, it would be so cute for my daughter who is shaking things up by joining the sports teams at school. Today she’s joining basketball, just because volleyball doesn’t start until spring. GO DAUGHTER!!!! and go role modelmama, Kate!
I’m not so much “shaking it up” as “shaking loose” today. I’m heading back to my pool routine as much as possible, having freed myself of some of my transportation concerns by buying a monthly bus pass …something I’d considered a waste of money in the past since I have my own car, but transportation I can more easily afford with gas prices what they are.
anyway, my daughter and I dream of a 5K this spring… so running may well be in my future, too… just to see if I actually CAN.

September 8, 2009 at 5:54 amIve been longing to get one of these for a review for a WHILE Lance.
maybe youd be successful?
(and yes. for the husband not for me):
http://www.utilikilts.com/
and Nelda? YOU NAILED IT.
it’s all about your own personal marathon.
we talk about that a lot around here.
My personal marathon (figuratively) started with losing weight.
then shifted to hoisting iron.
then (much to my SHOCK) was me competing.
Where this running thing may end up is a figurative marathon for me.
I may not hit 26.2 but Im sure as hell gonna try.

September 8, 2009 at 6:21 amI say go for it! Good for you! I am like you, I am not a cardio fan BUT I do a lot of it. I always surprise myself when I get thru the cardio session! I have done 5k’s in the past but nothing more than that once my knees started to hurt cause I get too competitive in a race. 🙂
Well, I already shook up my Tuesday since my workout is done. I tend to push too hard so I actually cut a bit of time off my cardio but I was feeling good so I pushed in some spots. I also did a cool chest workout with the cable machine & the large swiss ball as a bench. Loved it!
Not sure a marathon is in my future but I never say never!
Love that Dirty red gear. Never heard of it!

September 8, 2009 at 6:21 amI was thinking about this very topic this morning while discussing workout plans with a co-worker. Normally on Tuesday, I hit the elliptical trainer at the gym. But today I am stepping outside my comfort zone and taking a new class (possibly two).

September 8, 2009 at 6:26 amI’m slowly getting back into running. In college, I hurt my knee pretty badly, and running was out of the question for a while. But I’ve been going to the gym with BK (and the gym we joined doesn’t have a rowing machine), and hate the bike, elliptical, and stepper.
I lasted 4 minutes. Which is 3 minutes and 30 seconds longer than my last attempt. I’m calling it progress.

September 8, 2009 at 6:27 amI love that notion of my own personal marathon.
Today it is powerwalking for 20 minutes.
Happy Tuesday all!!

September 8, 2009 at 6:44 amI love Dirty Red stuff! I’m in the marathon camp with you, Miz! I’m signed up to do a half in December, and am scraping up the cash to register for the Mardi Gras marathon in Feb. This is my second half and will be my first full. I’m excited.
Today is strength training for me, so I’m going to shake it up by doing lots of new moves instead of the routine old ones I’ve been doing for ages. And since I work out in my own home, I like to start my workout by warming up to some music. Imagine me jumping around and dancing like a fool, and you’ve got a Gena-style warmup.
Sagan says
September 8, 2009 at 6:44 amCute skirt!
This attitude is a good one to have- that you’re working towards something and the marathon itself may or may not happen but it’s the journey that you’re making toward it that’s the important thing.
Kristie Lynn says
September 8, 2009 at 6:46 amI’m shaking it up by starting a new job today… thankful for that, even if I’m nervous. 🙂 HAVE A GREAT DAY!! I love that youre thankful as well as nervous. Back in the day I read a book (Stress for Success I think?) which said that our bodies interpret STRESS and ANXIETY the same way as EXCITEMENT and we can CHOOSE which way to view it. Those words changed my life.

September 8, 2009 at 6:47 amLove running skirts and mine is actually getting too big! 🙂
I am going to mix it up by walking today. I haven’t gotten any run/walking in lately – sticking to indoor stuff like a step class, yoga, or kettlebells. Today, hopefully outside, will be cardio!
Dr. J says
September 8, 2009 at 6:56 amLOL!! I don’t look happy running for even that long! I do look happy when I’m finished 🙂
Have fun, don’t run on hard surfaces too much while training, wear good cushioned shoes. Cost does not equal good, you can find decant shoes that are not too expensive, For what it’s worth, I like Asics if they are not too narrow for you, or Brooks.

September 8, 2009 at 7:33 amGood luck with your running program! I highly recommend joining a training group like AustinFit or Galloway. They’ll keep you motivated, show you the popular local running routes, and provide you with training plans.
My current fitness challenge is to work on alignment issues so I can end my hip pain and make an attempt at Ironman. I’ve wanted to do it for so long, but there’s just no way it’s possible until I get this hip issue resolved, and sadly, PTs, chiro, and massage therapists have been no help. Luckily, I know what the problem is, and I think I can fix it myself if I just stay motivated. 🙂

September 8, 2009 at 8:53 amToday for me I went to my trainer even though I had taken a week and a half off of training due to my hip (I totally could have trained but I got lazy). And I’m going to change up my cardio tonight since I can’t run still. Its not an excuse to get in exercise just because I can’t do my favorite thing.
And I had delicious coffee too 🙂

September 8, 2009 at 9:08 amWow, that’s a cute skirt. I never thought I’d like those things but they are great when it’s humid and my normal shorts try to rub a hole through my thighs. I’m changing it up today by listening to my body (I felt pretty crappy yesterday and this morning) and NOT running. This would have never happened before. I ran no matter what. But I’m taking it easy today and I already feel better!

September 8, 2009 at 9:21 amDoes chocolate cake for breakfast count as “shaking things up”?

September 8, 2009 at 10:02 amOh no! I JUST TOLD SOMEONE I didn’t know if I’d ever run another marathon – and now you’ve got me rethinking it. Why why why would I do that to myself? Perhaps to have a lovely 3.2 second running face like yours?? Perhaps because I need to get this last few lbs. off my a**??? Perhaps…
Quix says
September 8, 2009 at 10:08 amI also covet the red. 🙂 Today I am going to not be intimidated by the unknowns I face at work and to be strong and confident and powerful. Oh yeah, and my hour run after but that’s easy-peasy.
I’m thinking about doing that race too but the half portion (if that’s the same race – the one on V-day). I wanted to get one more half under my belt before attempting a full marathon.

September 8, 2009 at 10:22 amYour post had me smiling today and I needed the uplift!
I have had only 2 hours of sleep today and got some news that I didn’t want to receive, but despite all that to “shake up Tuesday”…I’m still going to the gym! Because of the lack of rest, I will take a nap and then work out for at least 30 minutes.

September 8, 2009 at 10:57 amCongrats on your decision! 2009 is the year that I’m running my first AND LAST marathon (October 10). I just want to do it before I am married and have children…but I’ll stick to kinder, friendlier distances from October 11 until the day I can no longer carry myself across the finish line.
For shake it up Tuesday, I am going to do yoga! I’ve only done it a handful of times, so this is major.

September 8, 2009 at 11:04 amYay running! I am all about embracing the self-loving pace.
Today I have a tempo run. I will “shake it up” by . . . . ummm . . . . pretending that I am wonder woman?
telling myself silly stories about my fellow joggers?
trying powerade after the run (instead of gatorade . . . which I hate, but feel safe with)?

September 8, 2009 at 3:43 pmWhew! That is one heck of a stretch goal, Miz! But you know, having read some blogs of really long-distance running people, I learned that people I think of as really hard core runners do not necessarily run the whole distance of a race. That was quite a revelation to me. Not sure there’s a whole marathon in my future, but I’m tempted to try a half marathon next year sometime. Maybe…depends on how the tri goes and whether I want to pursue more of those next year instead. Or maybe both!
That said, I haven’t run in over a week. :-/ I did a whole hour of yoga on Friday instead of the usual cardio stuff (inspired by the yoga post!). It’s a busy week with school volunteering (library inventory time!) and Thing 1’s birthday stuff, so it’s going to be a light workout week for me. I’m going to be walking at lunch instead of going to the gym for most of the week…kind of a nice break!

September 8, 2009 at 5:17 pmUmmm, I took back the crappily printing ink cartridge from my printer [1/2 used] and had them give me a new one in hopes the craptastic printing will end and that it was just a flawed cartridge …. That’s not something I would have done before. I would have just bought another.
I’m working on some short stories, which is out of my zone, too. The novel is my thing. Has a whole different flow from the short. So, there’s that.
Working on my networking … also outside my comfort zone.
I bought some apriums …. yeah, not a stellar health shake up. My white noise machine is great. I slept very soundly last night. So, there we go.

September 8, 2009 at 5:34 pmAh I couldn’t really shake up my tuesday, I had to deal with school-related stuff (visa etc. x_o)… I went shopping properly for the first time in like 13 months, cause I actually had money. Does that count? ahaha a lot of walking hehe
Well I’m planning to sign up with a running group when I go to Cardiff. They have so many sports clubs there (seriously, they have a mountaineering club. SO JOINING); I don’t have an excuse really.
good luck with the marathon miz <333

September 8, 2009 at 8:47 pmoh i LOVE Nicol and Dirty Red (isn’t she just the most amazing person ever!!!)
LOVE THE SKIRT!!! Wish I had one!!! (Please Random Numberman Please!)
I have found a new love in the form of the triathlon because there is so much mixingitup going on, and it’s so much more attainable than anyone (or me) ever thought!! if you bike and your run, all you have to do is a little swimming and then put em all together, see? good stuff!

September 8, 2009 at 9:11 pmMy 11 year old daughter and I shook it up tonight by playing tennis! We aren’t too good but we had a great time, running around, laughing, and attempting to hit the ball over the net! What a fun way to work out and hang out with my kid!

September 8, 2009 at 9:12 pmToo funny – the Austin Marathon is one of the two I’m considering to do next year as well!!! We’re just trying to figure out transportation and vacation time. :o)
I don’t think Hubs is ready for me to get all girly and excited about meeting the famous MizFit at a marathon. LOL

September 8, 2009 at 9:19 pmWooHoo! Well, its too late to shake up my Tuesday, because its 11 pm, but I’m shaking up Wednesday! My school just started(I teach) but my daughter is starting Middle school Wednesday. I”m taking off to see her off in the morning. I was going to drop her off, but we’re going to WALK together! Imagine…she’s 12 and still wants me and my totally dysfunctional fitness queen body to accompany her to her new school.
I will put on my new workout sneaks and be present for my beautiful daughter…and for myself.

September 8, 2009 at 9:48 pmI’m going to try a group fitness class that intimidates me: Turbo Kick. Whenever I watch it through the glass wall, I am amazed by the boundless energy and detailed choreography exhibited by the participants. I’ve always had a slight problem ‘getting’ choreography…but I’m going to give the class a whirl. If you see a girl looking totally lost and confused, don’t laugh!

September 8, 2009 at 10:29 pmI have decided 2010 will be my year for a half marathon. I just started running a few months ago and cannot believe I actually am starting to feel like I could do it.
Running has shaken up my world and shook up my Tuesday. I went for a 3 mile run this morning and my body wanted more so I did 4.12. I have never ever been good about listening to by body and running has taught me to do just that. I can feel when to push now and when I need to pull back.
You will rock a marathon – go for it!

September 8, 2009 at 10:49 pmI’m shaking up tomorrow (Wed) by *gasp* taking the day off! I rarely take days off, and this body needs it!

September 9, 2009 at 12:46 amI too have never been a runner, and always wanted to get more into it. I did at one point, for a short period of time, but I had actually, already planned to enjoy the fall weather with more runs through the mountains, so I shall, and sign up for the 10K in Lausanne! Woooo!

September 9, 2009 at 2:23 amWow, a marathon! My shake up today was my 100th consecutive day of exercise. I walked with a friend on our local coastal trail for about 4 miles. I think I could wrap my head around a 5k or maybe even a 10k with training, but a marathon? I guess I need to start with a 5k…

September 9, 2009 at 5:11 amNever ran a marathon-I run for fun and because how good it makes me feel. I just don’t get how running with a bunch of other people, elbowing and racing their way in front of you, would be a fun thing. I do get the feeling of accomplishment would be good though…maybe one day.

September 9, 2009 at 5:28 amI LOVE the skirt! And red is HOT!
Sorry I missed Shake It Up Tuesday, but I’ll be shaking up my Wednesday this afternoon with my playground workout. While my kids play on the jungle gym I’ll be running laps with intervals of push-ups, pull-ups on the monkey bars, and tri-cep dips. I’ve been wanting to do it for a while, but the weather here has been too hot and muggy for outdoor workouts. I’m looking forward to exercise in the great outdoors!

September 9, 2009 at 6:11 amYou can definitely do a marathon. Look into Jeff Galloway Marathon training. It has a run/walk combination.
And I absolutely love my running skirts. I have even bought a few cycling skirts. I alway get comments on them.

September 9, 2009 at 6:12 amI too missed shake up Tuesday but will make it up today my going to a boot camp class being offered at my gym.
Good luck with the marathon!
A few years ago I was interested in running and had even participated in a few 5K fun runs in Chicago. They were a blast, but I’ve always had trouble with running. For some reason I do not get enough breath intake (I’ve tried counting methods, stride methods to no avail). ACL reconstruction and a broken ankle (along with not getting that breathing thing) have kind of stopped me from picking it up again. Maybe I’ll have another go at it.

September 9, 2009 at 9:30 amAbout this running thing…
I’ve tried it a few times and like how much sweat pours off me but I am in total body agony for about 4 days after. Every muscle…even ones I didn’t know about ache and I can barely walk. Any advice??

I shook up my Tuesday by trying yoga after lifting weights. It’s hard with tired arms!

September 9, 2009 at 1:30 pmI just put MY little tornado in preschool…which has forced me to shake up my workout routine, seeing as his preschool starts right smack in the middle of my normal group fitness classes. So now I’m getting up as early to get in the workout first!

October 15, 2009 at 6:59 amInterestingly enough, my routine’s been shaken up in the *exact* opposite direction. I hurt my ankle. So I can’t run. So I’ve instead been hitting the elliptical trainer. Talk about different!
p.s. I ran a mile on Monday and my ankle handled it fine 😀
