November 16, 2009 at 3:23 amHopscotch! I used to love playing that as a kid. I used to play it with my cousins. I was pretty good at the hopping and the balance, but getting the pebble to stay in the square was hard.

November 16, 2009 at 3:56 amI used to love it too! Wow! I don’t know if I’m brave enough to try it now… will have to look up the “how to” again!

November 16, 2009 at 4:49 amI have not thought about hopscotch in ages and never thought about the fact that it could actually count as exercise.
I love your concept of PLAYouts.
Very very true.

November 16, 2009 at 6:03 amHey Miz!
When our kids were younger, we did this a lot…and now…not really so much. I’m thinking, tough, that they (and I) would have a blast doing this again! I’m in!!

November 16, 2009 at 6:21 amAh, I fondly remember the days where I used to play hopscotch with my friends. I am a total supporter of PLAYout over WORKout – and your daughter is such a sweetheart.
Enjoy your day, Miz!

November 16, 2009 at 6:24 amThis is one of the things I like most about you Mizfit – you know how to have fun while making it all work for you. I am sure your daughter really appreciates you, although she isn’t nearly old enough now to realize how fortunate she is.

November 16, 2009 at 6:35 amHow fun! I drew hopscotch grids for my girls, but at the time I was so big I couldn’t do it. Or thought I couldn’t.
I haven’t done this with my boys. I bet they would love, love, love it! (At least the 2, 4, and 6 yr olds would)
Great pics!

November 16, 2009 at 9:38 amThanks for the reminder to keep exercise playful! But hopscotch, like jumprope, was a GIRL game, and I was such an died-in-the-wool tomboy I never learned how to do it.
Who knew it had all those health benefits?

November 16, 2009 at 9:49 amI loved talking to you and Ben on the phone call. I’m looking forward to implimenting what we talked about.
In fact I didn’t have time on Saturday for a regular workout so I sprinted around my house doing last minute chores and then danced like a mad woman at the concert we took people to. π

November 16, 2009 at 11:53 amI used to love playing hopscotch as a kid – we used our ID bracelets as markers…what memories your post has brought back!
Laurie S. at Lifescript says
November 16, 2009 at 12:12 pmShelly B’s comment made me smile — I recall using ID bracelets as markers, too! They flew so nicely through the air and landed EXACTLY where you wanted them!
MizFit, I LOVE this challenge! I recall hearing someone say on Oprah that your “real age” (maybe it was Dr. Oz???) can partially be determined by how long you can balance on one foot. (Apparently, we lose this ability as we get older?) So I think hopscotch is an outstanding idea for adults!
I’ll see if I can drum something up at home for me and daughter when I get home from work. Love your ideas for fun exercise!

November 16, 2009 at 12:19 pmLOVE this. I am a firm believer that “exercise as play” is the best way to adhere to a fitness program. Replace the chore aspect with the joy factor. Thank you!
Laurie S. at Lifescript says
November 16, 2009 at 12:21 pmI just realized I’m not sure I remember how to play … as I recall, you each took turns throwing your marker onto each square in turn (throw to 1 for first turn, then throw to 2, then to 3, etc.)? Then each player had to hop OVER each square with someone’s marker in it. You would have to bend over and pick up your marker on the way BACK as you hopped, but could only do so on one foot (that’s where that balance came in!). No stepping on lines. …
Am I forgetting anything important? I’m sure there were more rules, but those might be enough to make it fun and challenging! π

November 16, 2009 at 9:46 pmOh, I LOVED hopscotch! The last time I tried to play I was disappointed that I could no longer jump all the way to the 7/8 markers, though. And my legs are longer now than they were then! Who knew I was such a good jumper back in the day?
