(yes the pose was her idea. extra points if you can read what her hat says.)
The facts: We (the royal we. the researched we) consume less of foods which require work on our part to shove into our nut-hole consume.
The numbers: When pistachio-studied we (don yer crowns! again the royal we.) tend to eat FORTY ONE PERCENT fewer of the green nuts when we have to shell versus having them pre-shelled for us.
The snack: We (the entire MizFit household Im not dragging you into this one) love these. There are 49 in a serving which is both a bountiful snack and a fab opportunity for the Tornado to practice her pre-school counting skillz.
The memories: Lets just say we (OK I) were addicted to these as a child as well. I gave not a shit care they stained my fingers bright red (remember that?!) except for the fact it made it more of a challenge to deny the fact I’d consumed the whole bag/less easy to blame aforementioned consumption on my sisters.
I rediscovered my green nut love at Blissdom:
(that’s my shell-debris & Joyce pretending the stuffed bunny is consuming nuts too. it was funny that day. you’ll have to take my word for it. we were tired.)
And it has been raging ever since.
Ive smuggled em into movies.
Ive toted em with me to playdates at the park.
Ive cooked with them (ok that’s a lie. Got any good pistachio recipes for me?)
Ive dragged Ren Man & the Tornado into my love as well (there’s been a little dissension in the ranks. They *adore* the salt & pepper green nuts. Im a hardcore PLAIN misfit).
This post today is purely to share my smittennessment & remind you of a snack I’d somehow forgotten.
**This post is in no way shape or form sponsored by the aforementioned nut which is green, the green nut farmers or the distant’ older, much maligned cousin: the dyed red green nut.
Before you skip off to continue your friday I wanna know:
Am I alone in having not consumed these since they were produced wearing their random red coat?
Are you a Green Nut Lovah who has a recipe (for anything. Im easy that way) to bestow upon me as this is our ‘recipe’ thus far created by the Tornado:
(yes that is pb&j with green nut shoved inside)
Are you as excited as I am I discovered these single serving packs last weekend at COSTCO! (Im renown for lacking in nut-moderation):
Please to hit us all up in the comments below.
Christina says
March 25, 2011 at 2:42 amWait, they’re in Costco in single-serve packs like we had at Blissdom? I might have to buy a Costco membership now!
Confession: I’d never eaten pistachios until this year at Blissdom. Now I LOVE them. And I like that it takes me forever to get them out of the shell – it means I don’t overeat!
Miz says
March 25, 2011 at 5:24 amI KNOW!! I was seriously so excited (even though I could portion out on my own :)) and bought 3 cases. #Ilackmoderation

March 25, 2011 at 3:36 amI went to a holiday party where the theme was winter white including the foods. The hostess had a big bowl of pistachios in their white(ish) shells. I’d never had them before and wow, it was love at first “awkward how in the heck do I open this with my teeth?” bite. I have been trying to figure out the serving size and because of the weight of the shell never could! So, thank you for giving me the number 49! I’ve never seen them in single serve packs.
Joanna Sutter says
March 25, 2011 at 3:53 amI am nuts for pistachios!
Thanks for the heads up on the single serving packs at Costco…that’s reason enough to renew my expired membership!

March 25, 2011 at 4:07 amOMG you did not let that poor girl make a nut sandwich 🙂
I will find you some recipes…
Tamera says
March 25, 2011 at 4:11 amWhy did they ever dye them red? I’d forgotten all about that too!!
And is that definitely right? 49 in a serving? That’s a lot, but I still need to portion them out too.
Have a great weekend!!
Helen says
March 25, 2011 at 4:20 amI still struggle with all the fat in the nuts (I clicked that link and it is almost 13 grams).
You don’t think that’s too high for a snack??
Heather @ Not a DIY Life says
March 25, 2011 at 4:48 amConfession: I didn’t really care for pistachios UNTIL Blissdom!
2nd Confession: Only reason I gave in and tried them was because there were too many processed food options & not enough real food options & I was feeling sick from too much processed food.
3rd Confession: I LOVE THEM! Hubs has always loved them, now I love them too. And I think LB is warming up to them too 🙂
Tom says
March 25, 2011 at 4:52 amPeople think I am nuts (pun intended) as I like to eat these during my long runs.

March 25, 2011 at 4:55 amPS. I did tell the Green Nut rep that I was VERY thankful they were there!

March 25, 2011 at 4:55 amI am a fellow Blissdom person too and LOVE THESE NOW!!!
How did we not meet there?

March 25, 2011 at 5:00 amI did not know they came in single serve packets..yes! Thanks for the note, I LOVE the green nut. And your style, I love when good information is presented in an entertaining way. I’ll be back!

March 25, 2011 at 5:10 amWhy is it funny to me this post isn’t sponsored?
I love the fact you don’t always try to sell me stuff and just blog what you love.

March 25, 2011 at 5:45 amI remember the red and never wanted to stain my fingers as a child (OCD much?).
As a result, I’ve never eaten one even though they are now white!
Gail @ Shrinking Sisters says
March 25, 2011 at 5:55 amI just tossed out the wreckage from last night’s Gator basketball victory pistachio orgy — the victim was Everybody’s Nuts Salt n Peppa. All of us eat them, some more than others (cough, cough, ravenous 12-year-old, cough, cough).
Samantha says
March 25, 2011 at 5:57 amYou do need a recipe.

March 25, 2011 at 5:57 amOh and love that plate 😉
Diana - Scale Junkie says
March 25, 2011 at 5:59 amI can’t believe you haven’t tried them since their red stain days!
They really are the perfect nut because you are not alone in lacking moderation but you can only eat these so fast when you need to stop and shell them, by the time you get 30 or 40 of them out of the shell in the belly that little “I’ve had enough” bell is ringing…the perfect nut!
Stacie says
March 25, 2011 at 6:01 amThat statistic is true.
I b uy mine shelled and often eat a big bag full without realizing until it is gone ;(
Kim says
March 25, 2011 at 6:03 amI LOVE the little green nut. I actually really like shelling them. It makes them last longer. 🙂 Hubby and I could eat them forever. I’ll have to look for the single servings though because I tend to get carried away. I also may have to try them on my long runs. I think I would like that better then the other things I’ve been trying.
Jen says
March 25, 2011 at 6:05 amDo you remember the book “The Pistachio Prescription” (I love YA lit)? The red dye featured prominently in that book.
I love them but have a very hard time quitting at a reasonable serving. I have an unopened bag in the cupboard for this reason. Maybe I should hit up one of my Costco member friends.
Lebanese recipes use pistachios. I’ve never tried making baklava, though, I’d rather just go to one of our excellent Lebanese markets and buy some already made.
Miz says
March 25, 2011 at 6:11 amI totally remember that book!
Ahhh YA.
You were my first career choice 😉

March 25, 2011 at 6:10 amLOL at YumYucky!
I needed this post. I’ve been struggling to find portable snacks that are not super carb’y.

March 25, 2011 at 6:19 amMy father instilled the love in us very early, and it has never left. Sometimes my children and i give him bags of the green nut, which we have shelled for him, as Christmas/Father’s Day/Birthday gifts.
Kimmie says
March 25, 2011 at 6:22 amI cut these out when I started dieting about 10 years ago.
With those packs I could add them in and know I won’t eat too many.
Is the cal count on the bag or just the Costoc box?
Shelley B says
March 25, 2011 at 6:28 amI never tried them back when they were red, but have been on a pistachio streak for months now – Sam’s has ginormous bags (naturally) of them, so I decant into a glass jar sitting on my counter. Everyone in my house loves them – fairly healthy snack, always at the ready!
Thanks for the calorie count info – it’s not as bad as I originally thought. Yay, less guilt! 🙂
Karen says
March 25, 2011 at 6:43 amI discovered them when I first did the South Beach Diet several years ago. Ate them lots. Eventually realized it was the nuts making my throat itch and not ragweed. So don’t eat them anymore:(
angela says
March 25, 2011 at 6:50 amThe Tornado is extra adorable in that picture! I have a huge unopened bag of pistachios in my pantry. Kept eating them like a fiend and then got sort of tired of them for awhile, then sort of forgot about them. Guess you know what I’ll be snacking on later.

March 25, 2011 at 7:17 amWe LOVE the “green nut” at our house! In fact it never even occurred to me to use them in a recipe because my kids snarf the whole bag in less than a day… Delish!
Katie @ Up Fit Creek says
March 25, 2011 at 7:21 amI LOVE pistachios. I’ve never thought about the amount I’d consume eating shelled vs. unshelled. Great tip!

March 25, 2011 at 7:55 amHere’s my favorite ‘stachio recipe:
Take a handful of them. Shell them as fast as humanly possible. Shove them in my nut-hole. Moan enough to make my husband jealous. The End.
I can (and have) make myself sick eating these things. Portion control is a MUST when I eat ‘stachios. 🙂

March 25, 2011 at 8:28 amWe love our pistachios. I buy them regularly. My teen has a recipe (somewhere, ha ha) for cookies he made for school once that have crushed pistachios and cardamom. Not exactly a healthy recipe though, they were deep fried like a sopapilla.

March 25, 2011 at 8:43 amI’ve only ever eaten the green variety but I lurve them! And I actually enjoy the de-shelling process. My Dad has always been a pistachio fan and usually has a big jug at the house. YUM!
Katie says
March 25, 2011 at 9:21 amI lurve pistacios with a fervor. My dad used to get the red ones and they freaked me out, so I never ate them until a year ago. I can’t get those big bags though, becuase I’ll eat them like MAD.

March 25, 2011 at 9:49 amIm with you 🙂 I *had* to write this after I watched my girl crack a shell and commence shoving the nut into her sandwich and after I totally did a JIG in the aisles at costco for the mini-packs.
quite frankly I didnt thank anyone would comment.
and I was ok with that…so smitten am I 🙂

March 25, 2011 at 9:43 amLike someone else said I stopped eating these because of all the fat.
If you eat them. I will eat them.
I want your arms.
Tracey @ I'm Not Superhuman says
March 25, 2011 at 10:00 amI love pistachios. It seems like you’re eating so many when the shells pile up, but the actual nut is so small. But they help you eat in moderation–you can only crack open so many shells And there’s no eating them by the handful!
David Grotto, RD says
March 25, 2011 at 10:12 amI’m really glad you posted this, MizFit! Very cool research out about seeing the shells piling up in front of you can actually help gain better portion control. So, don’ throw the shells in the trash as you eat them! Plus, the time it takes to open up the shell and pop them in your mouth slows down the eating process thus helping in weight management. LUV those little green nuts!
Sarah says
March 25, 2011 at 10:17 amLove’em! Nuts about’em. And never thought about the chewing delay fostered by shelling! Great!
Lori says
March 25, 2011 at 10:17 amI love pistachios but do tend to forget about them. My husband just bought a bag of the salt & pepper ones at Costco but if I had seen the individual bags I would have grabbed them!

March 25, 2011 at 10:24 amPistachios are green gold in our house. Boyfriend eats them constantly. I have to keep a stash at work or I never get to eat any!

March 25, 2011 at 11:00 amWe’re also nuts for nuts! My daughters and I just ate a bunch of pistachios for our snack yesterday! Shelling them is also great for developing fine motor skills. My oldest is starting to do her own! I love them for kiddie snacks (despite them being choking hazards!) because they’re delicious, convenient, healthy and not pure sugar.

March 25, 2011 at 11:26 amCheck out the recipes in “Thrive” by Brendan Brazier. I think that’s where i got the OMGSuperBarsNOMNOM recipe from that is made of pistachios, dates, and some other stuffs that I’m really kicking myself for not remembering. It’s a vegan athlete’s book, but the recipes are soooo good.

This is my favorite, favorite, favorite spring recipe:

March 25, 2011 at 5:51 pmI love pistachios. I eat them often. I hate their current ad campaign. Using a convicted governor to promote your product is bad marketing. But I’ll still eat me some pistachios when moved to do so.
Thanks for your kind words of support on my blog; they mean allot to me!
Have a great weekend!

March 29, 2011 at 11:51 amAh, the red nuts! All the kids in my family loved them, stains be damned! One of the best presents i ever got was a five-pound bag of them from my roommates at Xmas. Like so many of us, I stopped eating them so often because I lack self-control when they’re around. My guy likes them too. I also prefer to buy them in the shell because I will snarf almost the entire bag of shelled. Never seen them in single-serve packs, though.
