I tried to write this whole interaction as a traditional (if that word can be applied to the mishmash I call my blog) post.
I wrote. I edited. I changed. I TRASHED.
Each time I reread my writings I felt as though they didnt convey *strongly* enough how I felt (without massive overuse of bolding as Im already doing here).
Which brings me to the topic of VLOGGING.
Brands love video.Β It’s a way for them to connect with consumers & a fast and easy way for them to secure customer reviews and build community.Β (here’s an example)
I love watching blogger vlogs because it allows me to feel more connected as a “reader” to who the blogger is and what s/her’s passionate about.
That said, Ive heard many of you say you’re not fans.
Ive heard many of you mention you read blogs on your smart phone or at work and ANY VLOG (no matter how brief) is too time consuming or plain ole LOUD.
Whether you have a moment to view my Soft of Core vlog or not Id love to hear what YOU think about the medium of video.Β
Like it? Lose it? Please to hit us all up in the comments below.
And please to enjoy–whenever you have the time–my Im Soft-Core You Can Be Too! video.
Now you.
Are you motivated & excited by blog challenges & competition in general?
Or is LIFE your sport (as it is mine) & will you happily and confidently remain SoftCore along with me?
**yes in more ways than one–but that’s a different blog post.

January 6, 2012 at 4:19 ami loveeeeeeeeee your vlog!
and i am with you — soft core all the way & my workouts are about a committment to consistancy & getting fit & being active EVERY day of my life until — as you said — i die!
this is all relatively new to me — i have never cared about fitness & now i cannot imagine my day without it.
i don’t forsee myself being a competitor — but i could not totally rule that out either.
who knows?
that is the beauty of it — you can take it to whatever level you like as long as you are making some sort of effort!

January 6, 2012 at 4:50 amWow, what a great vlog. I think that right now there IS so much emphasis on being hard core, it can make me wonder how I measure up. Am I lifting heavy enough? Are my intervals difficult enough? Should I start running marathons even though I know my knees will hate me for it? I love that you are soft core, are incredibly fit and are very happy with being soft core. Thank you.
As for vlog’s in general, I generally don’t watch them. I’m a SAHM mom to a 5 year old and 2 year old. It’s pretty rare that I’m able to sit at the computer and totally focus. If I start playing a video, one of them will be beside me instantly asking me to do something. With a blog, it’s easy to come and go from, not so much with a vlog.

January 6, 2012 at 4:54 amI agree, consistency is THE most important thing, regardless of whether you race or not. You are SO right with that!!
I’m with you. I’ve laid down NO resolutions and no yearly total goals. That’s a big one with triathletes – they are all vowing to do X number of miles. That’s a dumb game, it’s more important that the training volume reflect your goals and respect your body.
I don’t do blog challenges either. My only competitor is myself! It’s internal, not external. I do race and I am a fierce competitor on the course, but I’m like a training introvert. Others might need the big public.
I guess we are each motivated differently. I worry about what would happen to my consistency if I didn’t have races on the calendar. And I love to race, so it works out!
The Vlogs are kind of fun, I like the mix! Keep it up!

January 6, 2012 at 5:18 amI like vlogs when I can watch them but like others I read often on my phone. I also read in the wee small hours of the morning and don’t want to wake the kids.
That said, I like the soft core idea for this year. I’ve got fairly big fitness goals this year but I’m taking it slow and steady to avoid injury and burnout.

January 6, 2012 at 5:18 amI will admit I do not like vlogs.
I love them when I have the time to watch, but I tend to never find that time.
Just being honest.

January 6, 2012 at 5:19 amI don’t participate in the challenges either. I feel the same as you, consistency is my challenge. I do occasionally participate in races, but I try not to feel overwhelmed by other’s race schedules.
I don’t really love vlogs honestly. I like them if there is a purpose, like demonstrating or explaining something that doesn’t come off as well in translation. I don’t really love vlogs that are rambles. Is that mean?
Miz says
January 6, 2012 at 6:32 ammean? not at all π I tend to agree too but wonder if it stems from the fact my life is so hectic some days that 7 min on each blog for a vlog takes too long? When I *can* slow down and watch them I LOVE. Perhaps the lesson for me is to sloooooow dooooooown
Thea @ It's Me Vs. Me says
January 6, 2012 at 5:32 amFor me, it’s not so much the competition in the conventional sense that keeps me going. I’m not going out there to beat anyone or be flashy or public about my fitness.
It’s really the competition with myself that is the biggest thing. I know for me, without a race to train for, I wouldn’t work out. It’s just this constant internal struggle, and knowing that I have something on the horizon keeps me moving so that I don’t hurt myself in the end game.
Blog challenges keep me going in the sense that I know someone else is doing something with me. It’s the long distance version of having a partner at the gym. I’m fairly introverted in the real world so classes at the gym don’t suit me. But knowing that somone halfway across the country is planning on doing the same thing as I am on the same day, that keeps me moving.

January 6, 2012 at 5:34 amI laughed when you called out a friend for saying that about you.

January 6, 2012 at 5:43 amNot a chellenge-taker here. Well, I have my own challenges that I adopt and drop regularly, but for the blog world challenges, I leave those to the folks who enjoy them.
Creating my own vlog was one of the challenges I never quite got around to last year. Maybe this year. π

January 6, 2012 at 5:44 amFirst off, LOVE VLOGs! I just like them to be shorter (less than 5 minutes is ideal!). I am competitively driven to a point. I like to challenge myself and I think a little healthy competition can be a wonderful thing. That being said, I think there can definitely be too much of a focus on competing…especially in blog world!

January 6, 2012 at 5:47 amOK this could get weird but here goes:
I do not usually have time for vlogs.
I read on my phone and when I can get them to work I usually start and stop around 30 seconds into them.
I watched this and like how you are sitting down this time and not standing up.
It felt as though you were talking to me as a friend and not talking at me.
Keep this way up!
Miz says
January 6, 2012 at 6:18 amok THIS could get weird too π
I thought the same thing! (Wait is that weird or prideful?!)
I loved sitting and chatting and hanging out with all of you.
Virtually. It felt more…comfy (as the Tornado says about everything these day)
Mandy says
January 6, 2012 at 2:51 pmThis is exactly how I feel – not a fan of vlogs generally but this one was great. I liked the sitting down, leaning forward, ‘friend’ feel to this.
And on the competition note, I’m you. I’m not competitive and I shy away from any competition generally. I prefer to add movement and exercise into my day and aim to be consistent (need to get back to that) rather than competitive. Better for my soul really.

January 6, 2012 at 5:48 amThanks Carla! For the vlog (I watch on my iPad) and the input on the old blog challenges. I personally love clogs, I tend to be a Nosey Nelelie, and love getting a real life peek at bloggers I love. (you have a lovely kitchen).
As for the advice, thank you for sharing you avoidance of the blog challenges. It can be intimidating hearing on Twitter about all of the races and challenges that others are doing. I love how you said that getting up in the morning and doing something qualifies as a challenge. I totally agree! *she said on her way down to the basement treadmill*

January 6, 2012 at 6:28 amI do love the video – as you said, it turns simple words on the page into an actual connection to a living, breathing person – but I do usually read blogs at work, so can’t generally watch them.
With yours, that isn’t an issue. You’re such an early bird that I’m generally able to hit your blog at home, in my first round of email-checking and Facebook-perusing. So I usually get to see yours. π

January 6, 2012 at 6:34 amI’m a NO on the videos.

January 6, 2012 at 7:07 amGood question.
I aways think I will come back and view vlogs, but I rarely do.
I’d always assumed it was my attention span. 60 seconds can seen long when you’re hiding from your boss π let alone 5 minutes.

January 6, 2012 at 7:08 amAlso I liked when you added in a transcipt too.

January 6, 2012 at 7:17 amI’m not sold on the videos yet. I have a dumb phone so I think the issue is just time. That said, I loved this video because exercise is my nemesis. I’ve only been following you for a short while but this is exactly what I needed to hear.
Toward the end of the year, I was feeling like the small amount of exercise I was doing was kind of worthless. I wondered if nothing would be the same as what I was getting done. Then, I read an article that agreed with you. In fact, it gave all kinds of great stats for people who would devote as little as 20 to 30 minutes a day to exercise. I can do that! Thank you for the encouragement. π

January 6, 2012 at 7:22 amVlogs…I am on the fence with this one…
As far as challenges, they typically do not get me motivated as I am not a competitive person. That being said, as you know, I currently have a challenge going on but it is support based not competitive based which does work for me. It is based more on individual choices with the underlying stance of “no excuses because I am worth it.”
I guess it is similar to when you did do a challenge last year.. it didn’t come off as a competition but friendly bantering and support to do something you wanted for yourself…
Ryan D. Sullivan says
January 6, 2012 at 7:27 amMaybe it stems from my love of film, but I really like video!
I watched all 3:15 π
I’m definitely not a competitor when it comes to fitness.
For me its about living longer with a better quality of life. I also know that even if I were a competitor, maintaining a *hardcore* training schedule and racing every other weekend probably wouldn’t be feasible.
I know there are people who continue to compete at a high level after they start families, etc. but it’s a lot higher on their priority list than it would be for me.
Thanks for your video!

January 6, 2012 at 8:23 amFirst of all, this is a profound (yet simple :)) philosophy that would NOT have had the same impact in written form. I heart your VLOGS. This one is especially effective.
One of the things I love about you the most is the way you express yourself–with your entire being. You are one of the most present and inspiring peeps walking Planet Earth.
What I might change to mix things up every once in a while? Vlogs featuring you interacting with someone else. Your true genius is how you interact with people and your approach to everyday fitness challenges. It’s apparent you’re in it for the long haul and your patience as you repeat sometimes the exact same advice phrased differently is a gift. It’s your consistency and true commitment to others success that sets you apart….no matter what the subject.
Two thumbs up.

January 6, 2012 at 8:32 amFANTASTIC POINT Kelley!
It’s interesting.
Ive approached people (from friends to other austin bloggers) and so many are just hesitant or refuse to do video.
I just turn on the camera and go.
That said, Ive also approached other bloggers NOT in the ATX about blogging the same topic and editing it together as if we’re, well, TOGETHER.
That could work.
Thanks for making me think…

January 6, 2012 at 8:27 amI’ll chime in on the topic of vlogs. In general, I’m not a fan. And what it comes down to is time. I like to read and I’m pretty good at it, now that I’ve been doing it for a few years. And the thing is, the text of a five minute video can be read in about a minute.
That being said, I agree with your points: about connecting with the vlogger, feeling like you know him/her better, etc. So from that point of view the occasional video should be encouraged.
Best of both worlds, of course, is posting the video and the transcript at the same time. π
Karen@WaistingTime says
January 6, 2012 at 8:29 amMostly I’m with you on this one. And I don’t do well with challenges. (Of the internet kind.) BUT, every so often one has gotten me going. Like the planks challenge last year. And I do know others find them motivating. Mostly though, for me, I just do my own thing.
As for vlogs… I do enjoy “hearing” a blogger now and then but they take a lot more time than reading a post. And I don’t always have the time. I don’t watch the ones that are more than a few minutes. Also, my own problem – I have a horrible speaker on my monitor and with the volume turned up max, I strain to hear. That said… ironically I had intended to vlog for my recent (and missed in the holiday shuffle) blogoversary. Still coming…

I love vlogs. I think on my blog some do, some don’t. About equally. I try to do both.
Jill says
January 6, 2012 at 9:12 amI don’t mind vlogs, as long as they are short. In fact the shorter the video, the more likely I am to click and watch. If it’s over say, 4 minutes long I probably won’t watch mainly because I do most my blog reading (watching?) at work and don’t have oodles of time to spend watching videos.
And I am not a challenger. I don’t do challenges, I don’t like challenges. I like the IDEA of challenges, but sadly I’m just not a good challenger, so I avoid them at all costs.
Shelley B says
January 6, 2012 at 9:16 amOn vlogs, I rarely have the patience to watch them. Usually I do most of my blog reading in the morning, and having to stop and watch/listen for several minutes messes with my routine. That said, I did watch your vlog today and I am right with you on the blog challenges – I tried them years ago but don’t do them now. And I also get a little bored reading blogs where the bloggers are doing updates all the time on those challenges, but that’s on me, not them. Easy enough to skip. I will challenge myself occasionally, but I don’t make it a “join me, report back” thing.
Oh, and I did hard core with my trainers. I liked it, but I also like not being sore all the time now. So I just do what works for me, and if I find it’s not working (hello, abs), I eventually tweak it. Simple enough, and that’s what I need.

January 6, 2012 at 9:23 amNo vlogs for me. I can skim a few written blogs in the time it takes to watch one vlog. I’m into absorbing information as quickly as possible.

January 6, 2012 at 9:33 amI’m another that can read a post faster than watching a vlog and am also catching up on blogs at work, where I can’t watch a video.
A transcript is a good idea, but I understand that would be more time consuming for you as a blogger.
Tamara says
January 6, 2012 at 9:59 amMy 2 cents…
I love vlogs in general and yours specifically. It makes me feel like I know the vlogger a bit better. Shorter is better (I’m new at it and find it hard to go less than about 7 min; but I’m working on it!). That being said, some people have the personality for it (like you miz). Others don’t. That’s okay, not everyone can be an actor or comedienne either. Know what you’re good at and work to be even better at it.
Blog/FB challenges; I love them! Not to show off or to compete, but to feel engaged in a common task. As I get older, I find it more and more difficult to form meaningful friendships. People are too busy to get together for coffee or a phone chat much less commit to working on a shared task or goal. The Internet has been a great place for me to connect with like minded people and to find encouragement to do things that I wouldn’t necessarily stick with on my own. I do have to limit the number of challenges I participate in at a time though. Too many = stressed out me!
Thanks for the thought provoking post!

January 6, 2012 at 10:12 amGreat vlog Carla. From watching it, I’m realizing if feel the same way. I’ve been fit for awhile now and get overwhelmed by all the planks, all the races, all the plans that get thrown out during the month of January. Personally, I’m not running a half marathon this spring to try and race out thousands of other runners. I’m doing it for me and as a way to challenge myself.

January 6, 2012 at 10:14 amI do love video blogs. It allows you to ‘know’ the person in a different way. I really love being able to attach a ‘voice’ to what I am reading.
And I do love your concept of being ‘soft of core.’ I have taken that to heart, and now feel okay when I am done with my weights session at the gym after 20 minutes. Just this week, I have shortened the doggie walks and added in some stretches and core exercises (haha, that’s what I thought your blog topic was this morning) which makes me very happy.
Keeping my exercise plan something that I can continue for life is so very important to me. One thing I do think about, though, is the stat that most previously overweight people who have successfully maintained that loss long term exercise one hour a day. Do you have any thoughts on that?
Miz says
January 6, 2012 at 1:01 pmwell I do and I don’t. I know it’s all backed up by science so I agree BUT I also have seen so many friends who have regained their weight because an hr a day felt overwhelming so they STOPPED WORKING OUT COMPLETELY.
I wonder what would have happened had they found something they’d actually do timewise (30? 40?)?
Would they have regained some?
Still all?

January 6, 2012 at 10:50 amI want to LOVE vlogging. I want to love video. The fact is when using my computer -whether reading blogs or visiting websites- I want text. Or at least subtext. I don’t care if the text is a direct transcription of the video, I want it.
I can scan text quickly getting the information I need from it and moving on. With video, I must listen at the pace the person is talking – a lot slower. In some cases, I must listen through their too much blather (I can never listen to a KellyO video again).
Others like the personal nature, but please give me some kind of textual subtext at least to allow me to decide if I want to spend my time that way.
For example: the I am soft-core? Like other commenter above, I believed this vlog would be about core exercises (and I was confused why you couldn’t write about it). Couldn’t see a reason to click through.
If you had simply added: “I exercise -a little bit, every day. If that means I’m not a hard-core exerciser, it also means I can do it until I die.” I would have context for the video.
I still found myself editing out words and saying Get On With The Meat then stopped listening half way through.

January 6, 2012 at 11:25 amI LOVE VLOGS! I love being able to see the person behind the computer. I feel like I”m meeting the blogger when he/she does a vlog.
As far as hard core/soft core? There is nothing hard core about me. I run my ass off, I run a lot of races, but that’s because it’s what I enjoy. I don’t enter too many blog challenges – although I did have one on my blog over the holidays. Im not sure if I’ll do it again, because it’s a lot of work, and I”d rather be running LOL
I do my other workouts when I’m not running, and I do them for me – I don’t compare myself to how much weight others can lift, or how perfect their downward dog may be compared to mine.

And partly because I can’t go at my own pace – I prefer the written word where I can slow down or speed up depending on if I didn’t quite catch something, or just want to speed read a few posts. I guess I have a short attention span sometimes.
I have nothing against them as a form of conveying information but its not my bag really. And nothing against yours – the couple I have taken the time to listen to in the past I enjoyed.

January 6, 2012 at 1:23 pmOK I’m going to be totally honest. I normally hate vlogs – except for YOURS. Because I miss you and love you and anytime I get to see your beautiful face, I am happy. But you know, I like to skim (words) and you can’t do that on a vlog. I want to CUT to the CHASE. I find that most vloggers (not you!) dawdle around for long precious minutes before they get to the point of what they’re saying.
I’m a writer. I like seeing words. I like reading them and writing them. I also like PICTURES. But vlogging? Pretty much meh.
As for the Soft of Core, I totally agree that Project Consistency is one of the best things ever invented (and I think you invented it). I am learning myself the hard way about burnout. Having said that, I have also learned what a group/community person I am and that I need a team to keep my energy up. I love the feeling of having someone else waiting for me or being there for me and needing me to be there for them. I’m a social animal! And it also helps me very much to have events on my calendar. It is very stressful & I am very hard on myself in general. I think what I do each day is enough for me. I am pretty hard core with my workouts but I don’t feel I need to compete at anything right now. Plus with age, I just want to keep my body healthy the best I can & when I compete, I go crazy & have, in the past, done too much & felt it in my knees or other places. I want to be able to get up each day as you said Carla & do my thing so I am fine with no competition. Life is stressful enough at times! π

January 6, 2012 at 2:35 pmI couldn’t watch this vlog because just the page took several minutes to load. Your page is usually faster than that. You, Miz, are one of the few who are worth the download time occasionally, but most of the time I don’t have time, even if the internet is feeling sprightly.
I gather from the comments that soft-core here is the opposite of hard-core. I suppose that’s me, too, since I really can’t push myself without exhausting myself.
Therefore, I find challenges pretty boring.

January 6, 2012 at 2:56 pmIf I have time and am at home, I click on the vlogs. If I’m on a break at work and read a few blogs, I don’t watch them. BUT…when I do, I have to admit, it’s fun to hear the voices of the blogger. Sometimes they sound just like I thought they would. Others, there are accents that surprise me. And that is fun! Keep doing the vlogs Miz, yours are wonderful. Have a great Friday.

January 6, 2012 at 3:04 pmLove video on other blogs as long as they are short and sweet like no more than 10 min. but I haven’t done too many of my own (none on my blog but videos with some other people). I think the reason I hold back is the tech side (video editing, uploading, etc.), not so much the nerves side. We’ll see, it’s one of my goals for this year to work on that.
As for blog challenges, I have participated in the past and even have done them on my own blog. I have found over the last few months that if they are longer than 10 days, I can’t keep up. It’s not that I don’t workout but I just have so much going on I don’t check in.
I’m not really motivated by competition BUT what does help motivate me is the accountability to others. So for now I’ll stick with checking in on my FB page for workout accountability. I’ll bring back the challenge on my blog this year but it will not be for 30 days that is for sure lol

January 6, 2012 at 3:21 pmFirst, the video rocks, as do you!
Challenges… For myself having participated in a few blogger challenges a year or so back, they put added pressure and task to the mission I was already on. While I expected that they would add accountability, they didn’t.
Having a plan and holding yourself accountable to execute the plan is the first step, and challenging enough.
Then our sharing that plan with real life & blog world adds an audience for information and learning as well it bolsters the accountability. It also add a bit more presure to the challenge you’ve already taken, but I have not found blogging itself to interfere with the plan undertaken.
Then to add blogger challenges on top of the plan (or allow to modify the plan you’ve set), I found it risky and frankly failed to successfully incorporate the challenge into the successful plan I already had. That failure, I let it cascade and prolong the impact of the failure. Don;t get me wrong, I do not blame the blogger challenge, I know it was my own failure to face the failure positively that led to the many lost months to follow.
I doubt this is typical in how challenges are viewed, and I am not saying that they do not have a positive role (see responses above)… but for me, for right now, not in my best interest.

January 6, 2012 at 3:40 pmI love vlogs for the reason you say
I do watch them at different times than I blog read (at night) but I like them.
Vlog on!

January 6, 2012 at 4:34 pmI never watch Vlogs. No patience, no time. I want to go at my own pace. Didn’t watch this one, although I still could. Justnot convienient.

January 6, 2012 at 4:40 pmI generally skip vlogs but since you asked so nice…glad I listened/watched. If consistency can get me arms like yours I’ll go soft core myself.

January 6, 2012 at 7:02 pmI don’t like vlogs. Rarely watch one. I will try to stop by later and catch this one. No promises.

January 6, 2012 at 8:11 pmI’m sure your vlog is wonderful but I just don’t like to listen to them. They all tend up sounding like Charlie Brown’s teacher before they’re over. I would much rather read what is written. I like the written word and think it’s more intellectually stimulating to both reader and writer.

January 6, 2012 at 8:16 pmI am a bit obsessive and competitive, but I have to say that I love the philosophy of “a little bit every day.” It’s PERFECT! Can you imagine if the majority of people in America followed that? WOW! Less obesity, less depression, less “can’t do” attitude. Love it. Thanks for sharing that π

January 6, 2012 at 11:12 pmUm, did you make this for me?? I think so. I want SO bad to be soft core. But I grew up in a hard core family and have been fighting (what? to stay on top? of a mountain that turns out just to be a hill in front of the next one?) ever since. I don’t suppose it’s done me any favors though.

January 7, 2012 at 6:29 amI love YOUR vlogs because they are snappy. Most bloggers go on and on.

January 7, 2012 at 6:30 amOh and I’m super hardcore.
Will you still love me since I do tris and ironmans?

January 7, 2012 at 7:05 amI’m in the camp that doesn’t like vlogs, and I rarely if ever watch them. I’m a very fast reader, so it’s a lot more efficient for me to read a post than spend time listening to it. Plus, since I often read blogs on my phone or at the office, it’s not easy for me to break out the headphones and listen to a vlog. Just my two cents!

January 7, 2012 at 7:20 amHey Miz,
I will do some of the challenges and leave others. I am so not “hard core”, as that pushes into punishment for me and is unsustainable. What I will do consistently and like it is far more important than what I can do for one day and hate it.
I don’t watch vblogs, as they don’t fit into my “routine”.

January 7, 2012 at 8:03 amI love this! I’m not competive with others but with myself. Blog challenges stress me out, with that being said I agree that life is challenge enough. I do have a group of friends (online & IRL) that support and challenge eachother. I just recently started a plankaday – because I need a harder core! ha! and it has kept me accountable but so does Daily Mile, Twitter and reading blogs, viewing vlogs!
Thanks for keeping it real and honest! AS ALWAYS!

January 7, 2012 at 8:06 pmI LOVED this vlog. Love love lurved it. It was just what I needed and I’ve been writing about similar stuff myself lately. I’ve been on a program where everyone’s been full-on and I’ve felt insecure because I haven’t been.
As to things-other-than-exercise: I’ve done a few blogging challenges (rather than fitness ones) and do sometimes find it a bit overwhelming to HAVE to write about something specific. It pushes me outside of my comfort zone but also takes away the thing I love about blogging – writing about something that’s on my mind….

January 14, 2012 at 12:08 amI don’t have a preference about vlogs because I flat-out don’t watch them. I catch up on blogs in my Google reader at night next to my sleeping husband. I don’t like to leave the Google reader app and I certainly don’t want to wake him up. So I just skip right over any videos I come across.
