Yes, People, Im changing things around a bit.
Every now & again, when companies wanna send me stuff for your reviewing pleasure, I’m going to have a Tuesday Test Drive piece.
Shockingly (*wink*) this concept was not born merely out of my desire for free swag all around. More than a few of the Test Drives will be articles Ive purchased myself & either adored or was sorely disappointed in and are an effort to save *you* a few bucks.
This entire concept was triggered by my love for the product review portion of Amazon.com.
More than once Ive been spared what would have resulted in a return simply by reading of other people’s experiences.
Hopefully my Test Drives will help you out in a similar fashion and score you some free treats in the process and if they dont, well, you know where to find me.
Fist, however, a trend. (men? you even reading? if you are this mightcould be your cue to skim.)
It’s another trend which I hope never makes it’s way to my sweaty little corner of the world (the climate I mean. not the MizFit. Although Ive been known to excessively glow upon occasion.).
This.
A spa completely, wholly and UTTERLY dedicated to your v’jayjay.
I know it’s important, but something about the way the spa’s owner refers to the hoohah vaginal workouts as ‘personal training’ gives this onetime trainer the heebie jeebies.
I even agree with this quote (again the spa owner): βIf you can vote and you have a vagina, you should do these (exercises). Itβs the dental floss of feminine fitness.β
All that said Im still not sold on the necessity of a spa setting. (the dental floss of feminine fitness description, however, COMEDY GOLD.)
You?
and now (drum roll. please to also imagine a fancy video of MizFit driving a car with wild abandon through a muddy trecherous trail and emerging none the worse for wear) the Test Drive.
This episode is generously brought to you by Oiselle Running whose merchandise, I learned, is as great as their no-nonsense so obvious it’s ingenious tagline: Run in what you love!
What would I change about the Roga short I test drove? one tiny detail: I wished it had a drawstring.
(is this a MizFit thing? I like to have them and yet I never, ever draw them. Anyone else?)
Please to enjoy.

July 15, 2008 at 3:08 amI totally think you should have got your fella to drive along in the car and film you while you simultaneously ran along and gave your verdict (hey, I work in TV, I LOVE gimmicks that make presenters look silly!)
My hot tip for running is don’t be afraid to go slow when you start out. Slow to a walk when you need to, but the second you can manage to pick up your speed again then DO IT. Nobody comes out of the womb running, everybody sucks at first, don’t give up, don’t give up DON’T GIVE UP!

July 15, 2008 at 3:49 amA vagina spa? I guess it’s true…you really can learn something new every day! Um, not my cup of tea but to each his/her own I suppose.
I too like the drawstrings in my shorts or pants. I rarely use them, if ever come to think of it, but it’s a sense of comfort to know they are there.
Crabby McSlacker says
July 15, 2008 at 4:10 amIsn’t the drawstring thing funny? ‘Cause I have exactly the same reaction: running shorts must have them or I’m disappointed, even though I can’t remember actually ever using it.
And as much as I love anything to do with a spa, I think perhaps I’ll skip THAT one.

July 15, 2008 at 4:22 am*wonders which is worse…local tanning salons or impending v-spa* I read that in Russia there are many such businesses dedicated to honing v-muscles. Anyone from Russia to sound off on this?
Running tips? I started six weeks ago with 4 miles and was a total running weenie. Now, am signed up for marathon in December and can run 11+ miles no prob. Help-ness for beginning distance runners:
If you have a base level of fitness to start with, there should be some point a few (perhaps 4-mile) runs in after which it’s not like death anymore to hit the pavement (or dirt, which is better for the knees). Invest in good shoes and treat them with love and try adding a mile a week to your total if you’re able.
Some people really take to running and some don’t (like cats and dogs — to each her own cardio, yes?). I love it now but hated it two months ago, so I suggest sticking with it for at least a few weeks if you’re interested in becoming a distance runner. It’s a kick-keester hobby.
P.S.: MizFit, the use of “mightcould” and “please to” is infectious lol. Very fun. π

July 15, 2008 at 4:31 amYeah the spa and the description of the an “examination” that I found (couldn’t get the link above to work) did creep me out for sure. The dental floss thing is funny but in the context of vajayjays it reminded bears a little too much similarity to a tampon cord LOL The addition of the drawstring comments re the shorts was almost too much to bear… giggle.
MizFit says
July 15, 2008 at 4:33 amyanks off BabyMama bandanna to hurriedly thumbtype WEELITTLEME? you made me laugh and hath, FOREVAH, ruined the shorts drawstring for me (and tampon strings—but I never much HEARTED them).

July 15, 2008 at 5:18 amThose shorts are so adorable! Thank you for finding them π I am by no means an advanced runner, but I run when I find the time. I think the best “tip” (can I call it a tip?) I can give is that when you’re training to run longer distances, the first mile or so is always the most difficult part! I trained to run a half marathon and always found myself dragging half way through the first mile. My initial thought was always ok, I need to stop, but once I got into the run, it almost felt…comfortable. I also think you need to make sure you’re drinking enough water, but not too much so you cramp. People have invented tons of nifty devices to tie around your waste, etc so you can have water throughout your run. I also saw a tip about hiding water bottles along the route.
Mercedes says
July 15, 2008 at 5:24 amMiz, you were supposed to do the slow twirl so we could see how the rear of the shorts were cut!
I usually tie my drawstring. Since my running shorts have my undies attached, i have a maybe-not-so-irrational fear of being accidentally pantsed.
If you’re totally unfamiliar, and uncomfortable with running, I highly recommend getting one of John “The Penguin” Bingham’s books for beginner runners. My favorite is “The Courage to Start”, as in “The miracle isn’t that I finished. The miracle is that I had the courage to start.” Very encouraging and has advice to avoid the common pitfalls newbies fall into, like feeling the need to run everyday. DON’T. Or running while in pain because not would be wimpy. DON’T. He helps you avoid pain and injuries your ego/psyche could get you into.
Also, Bodyglide. Friend to the chafed masses. It comes in a deodorant-like stick, rub it on anywhere you may enperience rubbing/chafing, like the band of your sports bra, inner thighs, or inner arms where they swing against your torso. You’ll be a happier runner.

July 15, 2008 at 5:46 amJust based on the quotes you gave, I’m kinda glad the link isn’t working for me…
I’ve been running for years. I don’t run terribly far and I certainly don’t run fast, but I enjoy the feeling of movement and knowing that my body is working to carry me all those miles. So when you first start out, take it slowly. There is no need to try and set a new personal record (either for speed or distance) every time you head out the door.
Also, don’t worry about how fast you can run! 8 minute mile? 12 minute mile? Who cares! What’s important is that you’re taking part in an activity that will improve your health, help you destress, and hopefully be fun!

I’m an “almost-runner” but I have my share of tips from moving up in the running path. An easy and all important one has to do with your review: put down the money for good running gear. I’d heard great things about my Asics from other runners and when I tried them they set my running aflame. I run so much better with the right shoes! I think shorts are another biggie. We don’t want any running wedgies (the runner or the viewers!)!!
Mercedes says
July 15, 2008 at 5:52 amOk, I just ordered two new pairs of shorts from Oiselle! Just a tip for the bumbling band, their sizes run just a little small from the looks of it, so check the size chart to be sure.

July 15, 2008 at 6:28 amI love the test drive idea. I too am in love with the reviews on Amazon. I check them constantly before I buy.
Since the link isn’t working and I’m too chicken to google vagina spa, I guess I will remain in the dark. All I know it I am scared….very scared.
These are some great running tips! Since I am a beginning runner, I have a question. Everyone says you shouldn’t run every day when you start out. So how long / far do you have to be able to run before you can start running every day?
Mizfit – you keep talking about how you can’t run, but you ran two miles?!? I can’t even run one, out of breath or not. I’m getting there, though. One of your other commenters said she ran four miles the first time she went out! Yikes. I am obviously not one of the “natural” runners. That makes my desire to become a runner even bigger.

July 15, 2008 at 6:28 amDang and my whacky butt wanted too see that site! ROFLMAO!
As for running tips? The most important one I’ve ever heard was “listen to you body!” Sounds simple enough, but the brain in runners tends to be a little stubborn LOL A couple days off at the first sign of “hurt” is waaayy better than having to take months off because you failed to listen π

July 15, 2008 at 6:44 amI love that the first “test drive” is a run!
I’m a big fan of the running–my tip would be, if you’re trying to start a habit of running: always run on Monday. I feel like if I start my week running, I have a tendency to keep up with it over the week, whereas if I let it slide right off then I kind of stick to that trend.
(** I am kinda sorta one of those non-listeners Marcy mentioned. even if I’m not feeling it I will run on a Monday b/c its a Monday–usually I think this is a good thing: I can always take Tuesday off!!)
Jen says
July 15, 2008 at 6:48 amThat’s funny–I always pull the drawstrings out of my shorts. I can’t deal with the strings flapping around when I run, and when I tuck them in, they rub. Ah well, to each her own!
Oh, and that spa thing is CRAZY!
hughsmom says
July 15, 2008 at 6:49 amA v-gay-gay conspiracy? Dangle the floss and deny the world access only to make them want it, nay – NEED it? I think so…. I’m not pulling on that string – not gonna google it, wouldn’t be prudent…
When my nose runs, I like kleenex with some kind of lotion, especially if it’s a cold or allergy attack and gonna take lots of kleenex…That’s as close to running as I get.
: ^ )

July 15, 2008 at 6:51 amTest drive is brilliant- I love product reviews and this is better than Amazon because you have street cred! π
I wonder if those shorts would be loose on my monster thighs though…they sure do look comfy! I am a drawstring fan too- I like having the option there.
I almost wish the video would load because my imagination is killing me and most likely far worse than the actual ‘workout’.
And running- I think I am middle ground as far as experience, so a tip: Even on those days where you don’t feel like going- commit to go 1 mile. Sometimes you will find that your body gets in the groove and you run further. Sometimes you are done and can say that at least you got out there. If you stay home, all you get to feel is that sense of failure. It works for me!
Nita says
July 15, 2008 at 6:52 amTip for new runners: The Couch to 5K program is awesome! I did the conservative program and had total success.
Question for runners: In the past 2 weeks I’ve had a weird symptom. When I first start running, it feels like something is hitting my left shin – like a string is hanging down and the tip is snapping into my shin when I step forward. It’s not painful.
It does go away about 10 minutes into the run. What in the world could this be?
charlotte says
July 15, 2008 at 6:57 amWhat I wouldn’t give for a pair of running shorts that doesn’t wedgie-fy me on a daily basis. Although I guess I’m the odd one out in that I don’t care for drawstrings. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a hater either. Just don’t think about it much, I guess!
As for running tips – um, the only one I have is of course born of my own experience: don’t up your mileage too quickly. Stress fractrues = ouch:)
And I can’t even get myself to go to a regular spa much less one for my vagina;)
Gena says
July 15, 2008 at 7:02 amRobin, you asked “Everyone says you shouldnβt run every day when you start out. So how long / far do you have to be able to run before you can start running every day?”
Just start out aiming for every other day. If your legs are too tired, then throw in a second day of rest. Once you get used to running every other day(two or three weeks), you have two options:
1. Run on consecutive days for the same length you’ve been running. Do this by running one, and only one, more day per week. After a few weeks you’ll be running every day (or 5 days or whatever you want to do).
2. Add mileage. Rather than increasing days, you can make the runs you already do longer. This is what I prefer, as you get more endurance and strength from longer runs.
Remember though, never increase either mileage or time by more than 10% each week! If you try to do too much too fast, you’ll wind up hurt. And hurt is bad. HTH

I, too, love that the fist test drive was a run! I’m always on the lookout for new running gear and those shorts look good! Wicking — with my sweatiness — is always a good thing.
Nita: Have you tried doing some shin strengthening exercises? They might help. I’m specifically thinking of the one where you keep your heel on the ground and lift the front of your foot up.
Other running tips? Get a good pair of sneaks. Go to a specialty running shop and have them fit you and recommend a shoe.
Don’t stretch cold muscles. Do it only after a warm-up or at the end of your run.
Mix some hills with flats, speed with slow, long with short.

July 15, 2008 at 7:27 amWow, those shorts look comfy! My tip for beginner runners, start slow! Try something like jogging for a minute, then walk for 2. I started running last summer into the fall until it got too cold out and slippery. I was looking forward to getting back to it this spring, but I have been suffering with some heel pain. I have had to cut back on my cardio because of this. It has started to get better, so I am afraid to go out and cause the pain to come back. I guess my question is…do you run through pain? I have not gone to a dr. but by reading on the web it sounds to me like a heel spur. Have any advice about that?

July 15, 2008 at 8:11 amHoly crumpets! Dental floss for the vagina? Wait, isn’t that what thongs are? And a personal trainer? Batteries included, I hope. Oh, there are so many places I could take this…but I’ll behave.
Okay, before I give you my running tip, are the freebie shorts and t-shirt the ones your are wearing? After a 2 mile run, it might not be so bad, but if you ran any further, you are going to wash them first, right?
Motivational running tip: on the days I don’t want to run, I head out anyway with the promise that after 5 minutes if I still don’t want to run I get to turn around and go home. Up until the 4 minute mark, I’m usually convinced I’m heading back home and pouring myself a nice glass of wine. However, I have to say I have NEVER turned back home at the 5 minute mark. By then I am in my groove.

July 15, 2008 at 8:11 amHey, I’m only a starter runner, but I wouldn’t run through any pain, unless its that fatigue related pain, then I just keep pushing. My tip is get some good music. Cheesy 80’s rock (Rick Springsteen, Air Supply, Blue Oyster Cult) works best for me- it just keeps me running
Heelspurs I kinda know about, but only because my brother had some a while ago. First you need someone to check they are heelspurs, because you could have broken some of the iddy biddy bones in your foot. Second, if it is a heelspur, you can get some shoe inserts that are supposed to help, and you’ll be shown various stretching exercises you should do. Finally, my brother was recommended anti-inflammatories to help.
Anyways, like I said, I’m no expert, but I hope that helps.

My running tip for total beginners or those who want to run but don’t have a strong cardio base is Couch to 5K. Someone mentioned it already but it is worth mentioning again. The Bag Lady says
July 15, 2008 at 8:38 amOh, oh, oh – the Bag Lady knows all about heel spurs.
Get thee to a doctor toot sweet…..do not run through pain if it is heel spurs. The Bag Lady suffered for THREE years with heel spurs because she kept thinking she would tough it out. (and two and a half of those years were AFTER she sought treatment!)
Here are a couple of tips for dealing with the heel pain – freeze a small pop bottle full of water – place on floor and roll it back and forth with the offending foot for 10 – 15 minutes.
Stretch the calf muscle – lean on a counter, bend front knee, and stretch other leg out behind you, keeping the heel on the floor. Hold 30 seconds. Switch to other foot.
Stretch the foot and calf muscle in the morning before you get out of bed. With heel spurs, the body will try to heal them overnight, and send lots of fluid to the injured area – if you jump out of bed in the morning without doing a little stretching, it re-injures it immediately.
Does it feel like you have a golf ball stuck under your foot when you walk? That’s the fluid build-up.
The Bag Lady wore orthotics for three years, but still ended up having to have shock-wave therapy to finally get rid of the heel spurs.
Don’t wait. See doctor.

July 15, 2008 at 9:03 amI’m going to ignore the whole “v’jayjay fitness” thang. Yick.
As for running. I am a marathon and ultra marathon runner. Best thing I ever have done solely for myself. My mind clears when I run and I return a better person.
My advice: train on your own plan. While it is nice to run with others (which honestly, I MUST do..won’t do it on my own), do what works for you. Test things out, such as intervals of different lengths, water and fuel habits, pacing yourself, but find what works for YOU. Don’t get sucked into what others say “works”. Most of all, have fun. I actually don’t like to run. I like to finish.
Oh, and I too am a lover of the drawstring. It often is my key holder.
As for a possible heel spur…git to the doc quick like. Good luck with it. Foot pain=no fun.

July 15, 2008 at 9:05 amWhen I was in school I dreaded gym class because they would make us run a couple of laps around the field and I could not run for the life of me. In my twenties, I started jogging on a treadmill and to my surprise I was soon running an hour a day. Then I started jogging outside and could jog for a good 40 minutes, which is the best feeling in the world. The problem is, you really have to keep it up because if you stop even for a little while its hard to get running again. So my tip is, even if you’ve always thought that you can’t run, give it a try. Start slowly and you just might be amazed at yourself.

July 15, 2008 at 9:06 amNice shorts! I like the drawstring too, but barely can find any that have it.
Take water when you run. If you don’t want to carry a bottle there are lots of water belts available. And remember listen to your body. Don’t be afraid to walk/run. Pay attention to how far you have gone – remember you have to turn around and get back. Not that I would have learnt that the hard way! π

July 15, 2008 at 9:08 amMy beginner running tip (which I have to remind myself of constantly) is to *pace* myself. If I start out in a full on sprint, I’m barely going to make it out of my driveway, let alone run for a reasonable amount of time.
Slow and steady wins the race.

July 15, 2008 at 9:31 amBest Running Tip for Newbies:
WEAR GOOD SHOES!!! I can’t say enough about this. Make sure your shoes are supporting your gate/stride/body in the proper way. Have a professional at the running store watch you run in “neutral” shoes to see if you overpronate or oversupenate, then correct with your shoes/orthotics accordingly.
LOVE that the shorts didn’t ride up. Also, I often run to get where I am going (see: save gas money), so the key pocket for me tends to be more of a key.money.calorie pocket.

July 15, 2008 at 9:42 amWow. That’s all I can say about the spa!

July 15, 2008 at 10:03 amHah. That spa…is unbelievable. I don’t know where people come up with these ideas, it’s astounding.
And I started running on a regular basis a year ago– at first I couldn’t even run a mile! My suggestion is to just keep at it, and know that you’ll get better over time. Also, don’t get frustrated if you have a bad run every once in a while. It happens. And listen to your body, because some days it really is tired, not lazy, and needs a break.

July 15, 2008 at 10:28 amThose shorts look comfy. I love the idea of a Tuesday test drive. This is my 2nd time around with taking up running and this time I have learned to pace myself better. Before I would try to run to fast at the beginning and then end up winded before the half way point. With better pacing I am able to stay strong until the end and I think that is one of the biggest hurdles for people starting out.

This lil mantra has pushed me up many a hill. Think about it, you hit a tough patch of road and everything just hurts… it’s amazing how you can cut the discomfort just by relaxing the tense bits and leaning/breathing through it.

July 15, 2008 at 10:46 amV-spa? I’m pretty comfortable with the fitness of that part of my body, so since I too have heard no complaints, I’ll skip it.
WANT. NEED. MUST HAVE the shorts. I have major “riding up” problems.
Running tip: (remember, I’ve only been running a few months)–mostly what everyone else said. My only bit to add to the conversation is to “play to your strengths.” I was so frustrated at first by how SLOWLY I run and how I just got 10x as tired if I tried to speed up. But then I realized that I can run 6 miles and not be struggling much, but my husband (who runs much faster than I do) is pretty beat after 3. So he has more fast-twitch muscles and I have more slow-twitch muscles. Which is why he likes doing 5ks and I’m training for a half-marathon. I’ll still try to go faster and he’ll still try to go farther, but we know what our bodies are best at.
Question: is there anything I can do to avoid shin splints? Anytime I run on pavement two or more days a week I get them and have to take a couple of days off.

T says
July 15, 2008 at 11:19 amto alice: YES! someone else uses hoo hoo!
and a hoo-hoo spa scares me and i would NEVER go.
as for running … i have tips (most already mentioned) AND a question.
tips:
– pace yourself! don’t start off too fast as it’ll hurt you later on.
– don’t eat too soon before going out (though that’s a general workout thing typically).
– don’t be afraid to walk if you have to. most running programs have you starting off doing walk/runs anyway.
– it may find you buying more expensive running shoes, but if you can, get properly fitted doing a treadmill gait analysis. for someone with “deformed” feet (gigantor bunions and such), this has helped TREMENDOUSLY.
– keep with it. running sucks when you start. you will have to force yourself to keep getting out there. but, if you stick with it, eventually you will get to the point where you actually start enjoying it. if anything, the adrenaline will keep you hooked.
– be not afraid to run sans ipod/music player. i trained for an entire summer without music (ipod was dead) and while it was tough, it made me be aware of my surroundings and kept up the ol’ daydreaming skills. that, and some races now disallow the ipod.
– focus on your breathing. i have sports asthma so i have to always consciously focus on what my lungs are doing. the boyfriend doesn’t have that problem, but depending on the run and the day, he sometimes has to take note of his breathing and calm it down.
question:
even though i have proper running socks and my wonderfully fitted running shoes, my feet sometimes feel like they overheat. any ideas as to why? and no, this isn’t just on ridiculously hot days.

Tip for running, not COMPLETE beginner runners, but for runners who want to get faster? Definately incorporate intervals. I did intervals exclusively for a few weeks, then next time I went out for just a “fun” run, I was AMAZED!
oh – and get fitted for good shoes! makes a difference!
Suzanne says
July 15, 2008 at 12:35 pmI can live with no drawstring but the elastic has to be just right – not too tight, not too loose.
My running tip is no cotton socks because cotton doesnβt allow the sweat to evaporate as rapidly.
Cotton = Sweat = Chafing = Blisters = Ouch! And I do appreciate the Body Glide stick as well.
After a recent 5K I accidentally overheard someone talking about his newly acquired chafed n!pples. They were bleeding. Remember the Fun Run episode from The Office? Guysβ¦It can happen to you. Don’t forget the Glide!
I also realized during my last race that when Iβm running with other people I start running against the other runners and forget to run with myself. Does that make sense? I get distracted by what everyone else is doing around me β¦ why are they passing me? β¦ is my pace is too slow? β¦ why canβt I keep up with that person? So my tip for myself is to just run for me and to find my own groove, and not to worry about everyone else.

July 15, 2008 at 12:45 pmSo, for some reason the floss thing reminded me of a g-string, not a tampon, but either way the spa is not for me.
Regarding running tips: I don’t run (yet) but my husband is a huge marathoner so I know a lot *about* running (I’m a total poser, I know). 3 tips I’ve heard him give are:
1. Don’t wear your running shoes for other activities like just walking around, because the shoes will wear funny and not fit as well.
2. Don’t get in a hot bath/sauna after a long run. COLD is much better for you and will reduce soreness later.
3. body glide, body glide, body glide (and for guys, nipple bandaids or a LOT of body glide)
Do these tips count? I definitely wanna be entered! π

Regarding running. Like the above woman ending in EY–I’m a poser married to a marathon man who will scour the world to find Body Glide if out. All I know is if he doesn’t use it on runs over 14 miles, let’s just say our couple-ness suffers for a few days and there’s LOTS of screaming coming from behind the shower doors on initial entry!

July 15, 2008 at 2:50 pmI’ve been running for about a year and a half now and just ran my first 5k on the 4th of July. This was a HUGE accomplishment for me because I never in my life thought I could run or do anything athletic.
I am really enjoying running, however, I feel like I am having a hard time really progressing with my running. I have a really high heart (only when I exercise), and I think that might be holding me back. It’s usually in the high 180s when I’m running about 5.5-6 mph, so it’s tough to go much faster than that. Oh, and I’m 26 and not overweight… Puzzling, huh?

July 15, 2008 at 4:08 pmAnother tip that has helped me immensely – a foam roller. I bought one of my own for home use. I was having some IT band issues, and found that a lot of muscles in legs had knots. After every workout, I roll my legs and butt out (one butt muscle was having issues too).
There is also the stick, but I don’t use it as much. I *heart* my foam roller though. I even took it with me on vacation.

July 15, 2008 at 5:20 pmI have strong opinions about beginning running – take it slow! and don’t be afraid to take walking breaks as you increase your mileage. You get the same benefits, but have far far less chance of injury.

July 15, 2008 at 6:12 pmAbout running through pain (for distance folk):
One of my friends is crazy-runner-boy and does marathons/Iron Mans/etc. He says if you’re running longer on a given day than you have before, expect some knee pain — normal, healthy, “they’re kinda sore but I’ll keep going” knee pain.
I’ve found that knee pain is somewhat preventable if you tighten your core and run not much longer than you can keep your form high-quality. Googling running form is so much faster (trust me) than spending hours and hours trying to find the sweet spot by yourself.
Erin? Am so jealous of the shorts you describe! What brand? My Nike shorts have only room for one key and maybe hairband. Maybe.

I especially like the KegelMaster. Now that’s something you don’t see at the local gym! “I worked out on the KegelMaster for 30 minutes, level 10!” “Wow! I can only do 10 minutes at level 1 right now… I’m a beginner.”
Yeah, conversations like that would just sound… odd.
Anyway, tips for runners. Mine would be DON’T OVERDO IT! Running really pounds on the bones and ligaments. Increase miles and speed gradually!

July 15, 2008 at 7:20 pmShorts with a pocket = awesome!
Running tip for beginners – increase your distance just a little bit every day (by 100s of feet) by targeting something up ahead like a mailbox or a cross street or a phone pole, until you can run a mile. After that make the increases much longer (go from 1 to 1.5 to 2, etc.) until you get to the distance you want. Don’t worry about how long it takes. If you start at 2 miles then good for you but if you start at less than 1/2 mile that’s fine. Anything you do is GREAT!

July 15, 2008 at 10:37 pmHeather: About the shin splints. I suffered with them for many years. Various things can help:
1. ice (you probably already know)
2. stretching calves after running (really, really stretching – from the runners I know, those with big, muscular calves need extra stretching to avoid shin splints. Don’t know why. But my shin splints started to really improve when I started to spend five minutes stretching each of my calves after each run).
3. Running on soft trails was the most helpful thing for me, but that’s not always an option.
4. Shoes – make sure you’re running in good, supportive shoes. I found trail running shoes were best for my shins.
5. Rest – what I’ve found in ten years of running is that anytime I get any sort of injury, it’s because I’m pushing my body more than it’s ready to be pushed and I need to back off.
6. I’ve heard that various toe-tapping exercises will help. Like, moving your feet different angles and tapping. It didn’t work for me though.
I have been shin-splint free for a couple of years now (yay!), so there’s hope!

OH one more tip — for the ladies here who just *have* to run at night, carry pepper spray or mace (I forget which one’s the no-license-necessary one, but I have the legal kind, in my defense lol). July 16, 2008 at 4:41 amI’m still giggling from many of the comments and seem to have left my wittiness still in bed, so I won’t try to add my own inout on the vajayjay spa.
I will, however, second the comments about how the first mile or so can be tough even for seasoned runners. I’m far from an expert, but have been running for about 5-6 years now and finished 2 marathons and countless shorter races and I still have to talk myself out of stopping during the first mile or so of ohsomany of my runs. I’m not saying push through pain or anything, but if you’re not quite feelin’ it, give it time. Keep going — what’s it gonna hurt? You may find you get into the rhythm after a few more minutes and then the time and footsteps just fly by.

July 17, 2008 at 6:05 pmWow!!! I know I’m late to the party here…having been out of town. But first:
1. Thank you MizFit! You look awesome in those shorts. Can I hire you to model for Oiselle??? I wish my legs, and oh gosh, my arms – had your toning!
2. The vagina rejuvenation is just too weird and funny. But that’s what I love about NYC…they have it ALL.
3. I’ve been running and racing for 20 years – but started out as a slothful, beer drinking, pudgy faced, cigarette smoking college student. Which just goes to show you that anyone can take to this sport. But it IS a learn to love it thing. Doesn’t happen instantly. My advice, which echoes a lot of what has already been said:
– The right shoes. Get thee to a run specialty shop and have them fit you with the right shoe, depending on your unique gait.
– The right bra. For a long time I was searching for the perfect sports bra. One that combined the best of compression, shaping, and a no see-through liner. At the risk of being totally self-promo here, we have this exact bra coming out next month…it’s called GoodForm(tm) construction and it will be available in our bras and shimmels.
– The three week rule. Running won’t start to feel good until you’ve stuck with it for at least three weeks, 3-4 times per week.
– Run with friends. The time — and the miles — will fly by. Plus, you can get coffee and a snack afterwards…the best part!
– Try a fun run or train for a marathon. The energy and excitement that comes from racing is really fantastic, and motivating, and will make you want to keep running – even when the crowds are gone.
Thanks again MizFit – and all commenters – what a great read! π
