For some reason, even before I started MizFit, I was a collector of tips (mentally. Ive never been close to being organized enough to jot any of these down.).
50% of which I actually tried 50% of which I loved the promise of yet knew Id never motivate.
That’s this week’s theme: The Tried and the Not. The Ive Given This A Shot Now You Go & Test The Other For Me Please.
Tried: This tip is all about the effort to drink more water because we are constantly dehydrated where I live in the land of big hair & bigger sun.
Wear a bunch (I like eight—but they *thin* not bulky) of bangles on one wrist and move to the other as you drink one glass of water per bangle
You could, for example. don eight bangles on your right wrist in the morning and strive to have all eight moved to the left wrist by day’s end (guys? I got nothin’ for ya. rubberbands? I shall make ask The Renaissance Man to Test Drive that).
Silly? yes. clinkyjinglynoisy? yes. keep you hydrated? fo’shizzle.
Not Tried: This one was passed on to me by a (fingerquote) friend (unFQ).
Why the fingerquotes? To know the MizFit is to know that she doesnt own a brush*—-let alone a hair straightener.
The tip? If youre at the gym for your morning workout/shower/rushtowork & notice that your clothes hath become rumpled guess what can double as a touch-up clothes iron?
Yep. (supposedly) the aforementioned straightening iron.
(please to Test Drive that one and report back.)
Got any good tried tips or heard tips? hit us up in the comments.
This week’s Test Drive is sponsored by Dirty Red. (please to click. please to check out the amazing bod on the home page. please to know that’s the OWNER!)
While I promise that Test Drives I *dont* adore are coming—-this one, as seen below, is a MizFit Must Have (look here as it comes in different lengths & they make a ton of other stuff as well).
One uber lucky randomly drawn commenter will win a skirt and a tee from the fantabulous Dirty Red.
Guys? These items would make a GREAT GIFT for any woman in your life so comment away as well.
*this? not a joke.

July 29, 2008 at 2:27 amThe straightener on the clothes? Works wonders. Not that I’d suggest it, but I used it on my most expensive suit once in an act of desperation and my suit escaped unwrinkled and unscathed.
Ladies, if you use any product on your hair, make sure the product is completely OFF of the straightener before applying it to your clothing lol. Otherwise, I’m sure disaster would ensue.
MizFit? I’ve noticed a lot of articles lately on water & how much of it we do/do not need. I’m still a fan of the almighty 64 oz (at least). What’s your opinion on it? Thankee!

July 29, 2008 at 3:25 amThe water drinking thing – I sit at a desk all day and stick push pins into my desk screen for every glass of water I manage to drink. At home I use a pint glass so I know the volume.
I do like the jingley bangle idea though. Very girly.

July 29, 2008 at 4:03 amLOVE the skirt! ordering definitely!
dunno if I could do the bracelets, too clinkyclacky. I do the old school thing and carry around a gallon of water to keep track. If I don’t finish it I mark the bottle so I know where I’m starting from the next day.
every night I lay out my workout clothes for the morning right next to my bed so I can roll-over-dress. This helps combat the I-don’t-wanna-get-outta-bed trap. I’ve also been known to sleep in my workout clothes sometimes.

July 29, 2008 at 4:24 amHave you no shame? Sending me off shopping and ab-coveting so early in the a.m. Cute stuff, though, and reasonably priced, so I forgive you
I have stick straight hair, so I have no need for a straightening iron. I wonder if anyone has had any luck with that Downy Wrinkle Release product?

July 29, 2008 at 4:32 amI was on a shoot last week and the stylist had the Downy Wrinkle Release – I was skeptical, but it really worked, and it was pretty quick, too!

July 29, 2008 at 5:04 amLove the running skirt! I’ve never actually tried one with the open flap, so that could be fun.
I don’t know about using a straightners, but I, too, can vouch for Downy Wrinkle Release. It’s no iron, but it gets the major offendors out. And it smells pleasant. 🙂

July 29, 2008 at 5:09 amWater drinking – every time I step out in the hall (no food or drink in the lab, please!) I take a few good gulps from my water bottle. I usually make it through 1.5 liters at work.
I love that running skirt! I especially like that it doesn’t look like a tennis skirt. So cool!

July 29, 2008 at 5:23 amHi ho!
Proud to say I’ve test driven both of your tips and would LOVE to test drive the DirtyRed!
Bangles to get one in the habit of drinking watery deliciousness is a great idea. A lot of people give water a ‘thumbs down’ by way of taste, but with a squeeze of lemon or lime juice – it’s a hit with everyone I know! I love water so much now, I don’t use the bangles anymore – however now that this has reminded me, I may go get some just for the heck of it. (i’ll buy ‘anything’ if I can write it off as a ‘healthy’ excuse.’
Re: the flat iron – YES YES YES. These things have so many uses. (They are particularly good on those stubborn hems that won’t lay flat.) I don’t leave home without mine – well, no, that’s a lie – I don’t take it to work – BUT if I could… I would!
Happy Tuesday everyone!

July 29, 2008 at 5:28 amMan, I’m still working out in freebies from my college soccer days! I haven’t shelled out the cash for cutie running gear, but I’m still banging out some nice mile times. 🙂
As for the wrinkled clothing, I’m out the door with wrinkles and all (um, I nanny for three kiddies, no sense in wearing anything that can’t tolerate graham cracker schmutz), but my husband swears by that spray bottle stuff. He just sprays it on his dress shirts the night before, and the next morning he’s ready to go! We’re not talking startch straight or anything, but it definitely releases most of the big wrinkles.
I have a random tip, a tip that has absolutely nothing to do with wrinkles and or balancing and or water BUT… If your garbage disposal ever gets a little raunchy, which is known to happen in my house, send some citrus peels down the shoot. Your kitchen sink will be freshy fresh.

July 29, 2008 at 5:45 amI am a long time reader but this is my first comment. I LOVE the skirt, and I have a question about the fit. How does the shorts-part fit in the legs, especially at the bottom? I’m asking this as I just returned from spinning class and am sitting here with my lovely spin shorts squeezing my thighs at the bottom, causing the lovely sausage-like effect.

July 29, 2008 at 6:00 amWell….not sure if this exactly qualifies, but…
Saturday I ran a twilight 5K (did pretty well, too!). I had packed some goin’ out clothes since the local gyms had kindly offered the use of their showers to the runners. I found as I was dressing that I had neglected to pack my goin’ out shoes! I discovered that cute, new, bright pink (and clean!) shower flipflops can double as goin’ out shoes if you wear them with the right attitude 🙂

Oh, and as a further tip, if you go to Drugstore.com right now they have a special on the 120 sheet box of Bounce – buy one, get one free. Good time to stock up!

I’ve never tried the straightening iron on the clothes trick. Seems like it could work well on some fabrics, maybe cause damage to others.

July 29, 2008 at 6:38 amOk, I may have a little girl crush on Drity Red’s owner. WOW!
Love the bangle idea. I don’t have trouble getting my water in now. When I first started, I was drinking out of the 20 oz disposable bottles. I started with a new one each morning and would mark on the label every time I refilled. I’m more environmentally responsible now, so I use a reusable bottle. 🙂
Love the skirt. Thanks for the review. Agreed that the side slit makes it look less like a tennis skirt (which has been a big reason I haven’t bought one yet.) Now, I’m tempted.

I don’t have any clever water tips, I just carry my nalgene around with me all day long. So that’s my tip…carry your water bottle with you whenever you can. I tend to sip water as a nervous/bored habit now instead of nervous/bored eating.

July 29, 2008 at 7:08 amI have not tips…sadly. Something I’ve thought to do at school (high school teacher here) is to write “water” on the board. Then every time a kid says it out loud, I have to drink. It might be fun to see if the kids make the connection. I have a terrible time remembering to drink me fair share of the stuff. Plus the new research is refuting the “must drink” gurus. Ahhhh science.

July 29, 2008 at 7:39 amI’ve pretty much got the water-drinking down. I have a 32 oz mug on my desk at work (plus my computer monitor reminder), and try to finish it by lunch, then fill it up and try to finish most of the rest by the time I leave. That’s in addition to the full glass I drink in the morning before I run, and the other full glass that I drink when I take my vitamins.
I also have stick-straight hair, and do not
needown a straightener. I also don’t attend a gym, so luckily I wear my wrinkled clothes right from home. (Hallelujah for business casual dress-code).Although the skirts seem to look super-cute on everyone else, I’m still a little nervous about buying one. It’s hard enough for me to do shorts. I guess it’s just a psychological block I’ll have to work on overcoming.

I also have tried (okay, I do it nearly daily) the hair straightener trick. It really does work wonders. I always try to attach the husband with it to smooth down his collars. He is now terrified of the bathroom in the AM.
Another trick that I have tried that I really think is great. My cell phone has a feature where you can set an alarm to go off in XXX minute increments. When I am at the beach or any where outside, I use this feature to go off every 90 minutes to remind myself to re-smother myself in sunscreen.

July 29, 2008 at 7:52 amThe Bag Lady loves the skort. (that’s what we used to call those back in the dark ages… ) Of course, she fears the tight legs might/could result in sausage effect.
So, umm, do you think her belly would look like that if she got one of those skorts? That somewhere under her enormous girth are abs of steel?
And the Downy Wrinkle Release? Didn’t work worth a shit on the Bag Lady…..but now she realizes she wasn’t supposed to be using it on her face……. sigh.
Marianne says
July 29, 2008 at 8:02 amLOVE that skirt. Have the same sausage leg concerns, tho. Even at 99 pounds (a distant memory…) I had chubby legs. I live in skorts all summer. Shorts only flatter the perfectly fit.
Downy wrinkle release expensive. But if you buy the bottle, when it is empty, refill it with a slosh (maybe 2 oz?) of fabric softener and then water. Shake before every use. Works a charm for cheap!
: )

July 29, 2008 at 8:05 amOh, I need some good motivation like those cute little skorts. With this move, I haven’t made it back to the gym yet. But I have been lifting and moving lots of heavy boxes and furniture. And with 4 acres of living tumbleweed, I’m doing lots of yard work.
When I unpacked the scale, I found I had lost 2 lb even thought I’m not eating anywhere near clean.

July 29, 2008 at 8:10 amYou look awesome in that skirt!
My trick for getting more water is first thing in the morning before I do anything. I down 16 oz of water.
Before any meal I make myself down 8 oz of water and wait 15 minutes. Then I do the same thing after a meal after I let the food digest for 15-20 minutes. With 5-6 snacks/meals a day you can get tons of water in that way.
And most of my vitamins are liquid that forces me to drink more water as well. Water makes the biggest difference in weight loss.
Great post!!

July 29, 2008 at 8:35 amI recently got a tip from my sister that I’ve yet to try. Make a 14-day meal plan. Put each recipe on a big recipe card with just the ingredients on one side, then the actual recipe on the other. Laminate each card, punch a hole in each, then put them together on a key ring. Leave the recipes in your purse, then when you’re grocery shopping, just pull the recipes out and you have your shopping list!

July 29, 2008 at 8:39 amStraightening iron to the gym… nope, that sure ain’t me. Whenever I’ve gone to the gym I’ve never bothered with lugging around hair products/makeup etc etc. I’d go between classes at school so I’d stay in the gym exercising for as long as possible before dashing out and showering/changing/getting to class all within 5 minutes. It’s QUITE a feat:)
And oh wow I LOVELOVELOVE that skirt. The key pocket? Genius! I usually stick my keys in my sock when I don’t have pockets in my shorts. It results in a very uncomfortable foot as the keys dig into my ankle, jabbing ruthlessly as they laugh “keep on going you’ll never dislodge us! Mwhahaha!”
Jabbering chattering keys? Mayhaps I’ve had a touch of sun.

July 29, 2008 at 9:17 amOkay, I tried the straightener as an iron…not perfect by any means but it could be a good stop-gap (bearing in mind I am a die-hard NON-ironer anyway). Mine is a bit narrow, I think if you have a wider one it would work better. (Oh, and I don’t use a brush either. Combs are so much better when you have hair that wants to ‘fro anytime there’s any humidity in the air, and you live in a place where it rains more often than the sun shines…)
I SO want the skirt. Like, I’m salivating. 🙂 I have one but it is NOT split and is somewhat annoying as a result; this is so much cooler. Love the pocket too!

July 29, 2008 at 9:36 amI love plain water… and I love bubbly water (just water and carbonation), but I know many people don’t like it; for them plain=boring, plain bubbly=alka seltzer…. However, have you seen TrueLemon, TrueLime, TrueOrange? Easy to carry, no fruit to cut up and squeeze, just add a packet.
The TrueLemon also comes in a shaker; I use that on fish since every time I buy a lemon or two I seem to use part and have the rest go bad.
No I don’t have any affiliation with them.

July 29, 2008 at 11:01 amInterestingly, we are giving away water bottles to our students this year so that they can constantly drink water while in class. Studies show that drinking water helps with your over all concentration and focus, that is if you don’t have to go to the bathroom often…LOL

Interesting about the water bottles. I clearly recall begging for a hall pass (do they even use those any more?) to go and get a mere SIP of water.

July 29, 2008 at 11:11 amso…where can the more-than-XL gals find some cute workout gear? i only saw one thing on the dirty red website that came in XXL and that was the sports bra…and i think that’s prolly just because it was a double bra thingy.
anyone? anyone? bueller?

July 29, 2008 at 11:25 amAuntie? I’ve no answers but hope others can chime in.
I’m answerless enough that, when I had my studio, the Renaissance Man & I almost launched a line of plus sized workout clothing.
My clients could never find stuff they LIKED or that was comfortable.
I’ve approached companies and inquired about this as well and, according to them, it doesn’t sell.
(*scratches head & tries to envision the fact that all women over a size XL are deciding to workout naked.*)
I call bullsh** on that.
And it still doesn’t change the fact that I don’t have a car (ok, I think I mangled the quote but you get the reference?).

July 29, 2008 at 11:32 amI’ll pass on a tip that I just heard the other day from a client. My shoes get really raunchy. Really, really raunchy. Between swimming in lakes and sweating and mildew and everything, the shoes stink. Like fill the entire training office kind of stink. So a lady in my cycling class told me to spray Lysol in them. And? Shoes smell fresh as a summer breeze. She also suggested putting Pinesol in the laundry every couple weeks (to get the workout stank fully out without having to buy high dollar workout detergent), which I’ll try the next time I do laundry.
And I absolutely LOVE those outfits. I’ve been looking for training/racing clothes that won’t fit the standard Zoot shorts/crop top, tri shorts/tri top, or speedsuit mold. Because, you know, I don’t want to look like everyone else on a race course :-). So don’t tell any other triathletes about these, mkay?

July 29, 2008 at 11:51 amI LOVE the idea of the workout skirt, and I firmly believe there is one out there that will be the most perfect skirt for me. The ones I have now are a) cute; and b) cute, but only work for elliptical, or short runs. Once I run for more than 4 miles, they start creeping up, and then my thighs start rubbing, and then there is chafing. I need something that will stay in place a little better. Or else, maybe I need smaller thighs -but I’m not counting on that happening without a scalpel & some ether.
(I take a 32 oz bottle of water to work, and drink one in the am, and one in the pm. Although not today – time to go fill up.)

July 29, 2008 at 12:05 pmMan…a lot of comments up in here!
I LOVE running in a skirt. It totally feels more feminine. I like the shorts under more than briefs, so that is just about perfect. They can be hotter, but when you run in the morning here it isn’t a problem.
I have used the straightener for clothes and it does the job. And the bangles idea…lovin’ it! I might have to wrestle them from my toddler though.
Here is hoping I am the uber lucky randomly drawn commenter!

July 29, 2008 at 12:38 pmHydration tips: As a runner, staying on top of hydration is a must. I carry around a 32-oz bottle and don’t let myself eat lunch until I have finished the bottle. At lunch I refill it, and sip on it until bed.
Healthy eating: I start every single lunch and dinner with a big honkin bowl of spinach- I call it my veggie insurance. If I am going to a party or out to dinner with a friend, I eat a bowl right before I leave. Not only do I make sure to get my veggies in, but it helps prevent overeating!

July 29, 2008 at 1:22 pmHere’s a crazy tip that is totally non-fitness related, but could be a good one for The Miz and her happy readers with kids:
The reusable cupcake liners make GREAT snack bowls for kids. They’re just the right size for a healthy-sized kid snack, cut down on dish space in the dishwasher and come in all kinds of colors. They’re also not going to break or make a racket if the kids drop them, especially for those of you with hardwood or tile floors.
I’d LOVE to try the Dirty Red running skirt. Love, love, love. I’m pretty happy with my skirt from REI, but I’m on a mission to try more brands . . . on my super low author budget. 🙂 And I’m a redhead, so wouldn’t a Dirty Red skirt just be right up my alley???? My husband would simply love all of the connotations associated with it, too. Ah, the gutter!

The only way I’ve ever been able to get myself to drink more water is to put my water glass directly beside my coffee cup. No more coffee until I drink a glass of water (I’m not a big water fan).

July 29, 2008 at 1:52 pmI think I’m just boring about the water thing – I have a 16 oz water bottle, and must drink 1 by lunch, and 1 after lunch before I go home.
I have to drink it before I get to eat lunch, and before I catch the bus home. It’s not perfect but it works…but I work in a lab so I can’t just keep water by me. I have to put it in my locker and sneak sips whenever I can. I hav et osay, I *still* don’t like water…it tastes like nothing. My husband drinks his weight in water every day, so it helps that I have him pour me a drink when he pours himself one, but it’s not something I think I’ll ever enjoy.
If only I could make coffee count as water…
That skirt looks amazing. I’d love some workout clothes…mine are pretty trashed by now. It always gives me a kick to run if I have something cute to wear while doing it. Silly I know, but I’ll take any incentive I can ! 🙂

July 29, 2008 at 3:36 pmWhat a great idea with the bangles! It reminds me of my friend who wore rubberbands on his wrist (he was trying to quit smoking) and would SNAP! his wrists every time he had an urge to puff away. July 29, 2008 at 5:47 pmHoly cow MizFit you get a lot of comments. I usually read it earlier in the day so there are not as many but, wow, I am impressed. I also got to say I truly appreciate you coming by and encouraging me with my progress and my blog.
So I thought about it and figured out what a guy can do. Keep some change in a pocket that starts in the left pocket and works over to the right pocket as you drink a glass of water. Then you can be reminded each time you get up for something and hear a little jingle in the pocket. Once the pocket it empty you can then switch to beer. (ok not a good health tip, but you got to admit it would really motivate some guys).

July 29, 2008 at 9:37 pmNow that skirt with the high slit? Looks like it would work well on weight machines without riding up to my hoo-haa. July 31, 2008 at 9:54 amI don’t think the bracelet thing would work for me. I can’t stand anything other than a watch on my wrist. What works for me is the big glass of water on the desk next to the cup of coffee, mentioned by MamaZen.
I started drinking BIG glasses of water with my coffee while I had braces a couple of years ago. Helped keep the coffee stains from getting too bad on the brackets/bands. Became a habit, and I still keep a giant tumbler with me all morning while sipping coffee.
In the afternoon, it’s a giant tumbler of cold water with a sliced strawberry dropped in. Raspberries or an orange slice works well, too.
I love the Dirty Red skirt. The side slit looks comfy, especially for running here in Hotlanta. I have a couple of cycle skorts and running skirts, and think they are the best thing for when I’m working exercise into the transition time between office and the carpool line at school. I can run, bike or row, and still feel perfectly comfortable dropping by the store and school before going home.

June 3, 2010 at 10:50 amThat skirt is way cute! I am a lover of cute and comfy workout clothing. I also, as a rule, don’t buy things that wrinkle. I am also lucky enough to work in a very very casual industry where showing up to an interview in jeans and a t-shirt is more than appropriate.
I’m not feeling creative so I’ll agree on the laying your clothes out at night tip (I would rather stay up later than get up earlier any day of the week). Oh hey, two more – toothpaste works GREAT to get scratches out of DVDs or CDs (the normal kind, not the gel or breath strips or super white gritty ones), and hairspray applied to your face (or wherever you get it sploched) gets out hair dye that goes astray. In my wilder crazy color days, this was a LIFESAVER.
