November 3, 2008 at 2:27 amThe tagline on my blog is borrowed from John Bingham – ““The miracle isn’t that I finished. The miracle is that I had the courage to start.”
This is really about my weight loss / fitness / running journey, more than my entire life, but is, oh so fitting for my last few years.
Now, a tagline for my life – that’s a bit more challenging.

November 3, 2008 at 2:53 ami think one of my personal taglines is “onward and awkward.” i think it’s important to be persistent in things but sometimes they get awkward/difficult/whatever but that is okay. heh. 🙂

November 3, 2008 at 3:15 amThank you for this post! I’ve been thinking about this on and off for months, and utterly failing to come up with anything. I’ve had a few in the past… “your life has never been short on drama”… and “it’ll work out.” But I think these taglines represent a time in my life that I’m sort of PAST. So where am I going now? My ideal end result would be one of relaxed moderation. I think I’ve learned how to be healthy in body, now I’m trying to be healthy in mind. Sanity. Turning this into a tagline is easier said than done! But I’m going to work on it. Thanks for motivating me!

November 3, 2008 at 3:23 amHonestly? “Because fitness shouldn’t be complicated” is pretty darn near my personal mission statement.
Eating right and exercising used to be as natural as sleeping and going to the bathroom (awkward…). Now, all four of those things are COMPLICATED and DIFFICULT because we like to pretend we’re not human.
It ain’t true, folks.
I feel like the second we became civilized ladies we screwed ourselves over. And, in my cavegirl defense, loin cloths are hot.
So there, Civilized Ladies Who Lunch.
I’m going to go climb a rock now for emphasis.

November 3, 2008 at 4:20 amGreat post. Well, when I was growing up I never got the message that failure is a part of success. Which really has a lot to do with thinking that I have to do IT perfectly. My journey to becoming healthy has had a lot of failure, meaning I haven’t reached my final destination yet. Sometimes it’s hard to find the courage to keep going through all the trying (sounds better than failure) and false starts. So for me right now, my tagline would read something like: “Progress, not perfection!” Just to remind myself that I don’t have to do it perfectly and really I can’t because there is no such thing.
I’ll have to think about it some more. I love what you said about making it something that you can live with for life. That’s what I’m struggling with right now. I want to find the lifestyle that I can live with. It may take me longer to get to my goal, but, I’ll be living my life while I’m doing it! That’s important!!

It has been hard for me to, as I rambled, find a personal tagline.
Im not sure if it is because it’s so PERSONAL in that with MizFit I know I can change on a whim (to paint with a broad brush) and that for ME it takes a lot of introspection.
looking deep inside and seeing who I REALLY am and then stepping back and realizing who I really strive to be.

Are there tiny mizfit cameras in my house? I was working on this over the weekend. There are so many different life situations–some mundane, some painful to the heart–and it’s not easy to find that one phrase that will work to center me and keep me focused.
For now, I’m sticking with the line that I have written on my memo board at work: “Because it’s the right thing to do.” It’s all I have for now.
But I may borrow that “onward and awkard” one from time to time. 🙂

However
My personal tagline:”If you don’t say (do) something, that means you agree with it.”
I find that in my line of work and my personal life, this mantra is great. If you don’t speak up or take action when something bad is happening, you are just as accountable and it means you agree with it.

My tag line (even though it isnt on the blog- dont control the template, grrr) is Get Grounded, Stay Grounded, which is to try and encourage people to get a freakin’ grip. What works for one doesnt work for everyone, and no one can tell you exactly what you need in terms of fitness (or life, for that matter). For me, fitness is entirely different than it is for someone else. we all need to calm down, take a second, and think about WHY we are living a healthy lifestyle. I will never be and over exerciser, I will never be a wake up at dawn and run 15 miles person, and I will never let workouts, or food, make me feel guilty. Its all about keeping it in perspective.

November 3, 2008 at 8:18 amIf I had a fitness blog, I suppose the tagline might be: Move Yer Ass.
For life in general…that’s trickier.
Just yesterday hubby and I had a big discussion about his routines. The man claims they make his life easier, because he doesn’t have to think about them: getting ready for work, paying bills, etc.
However, I think he tends to get tangled up by his routines, in the sense that if there’s any kind of intervention or deviation (i.e. an unexpected phone call or a plugged sink) it totally throws him off-balance and messes up his entire routine. His routines have reduced his capacity to adapt and think freely.
Which is what I’m trying to condense into a single tagline. Here are my current candidates after five minutes of consideration:
Live Consciously (nice, but kinda bland)
Stagnation is Death (snarky and eye-catching)
Keep Yourself Alive (a little nod to one of my favorite Queen songs)

Dawn says
November 3, 2008 at 8:35 amI have several taglines/mottos I use. I use “Fixing Myself Thinner” because I really do believe to lose the weight and keep it off I have to fix all of myself, my mind as well as my body. It’s been a joint process through therapy, better eating and exercise.
I also use “I can do it! I will do it! Consider it done!” this one really makes me feel empowered. I’ve come to realize that I have a strong body and always have. When an overweight person thinks of themselves they don’t realize how strong they are. They think they have these big bulky bodies that can barely move. But if you really think about it just think how strong those bodies must be from caring around all that weight. If I try to lift up even 50 lbs now I’m like “man that’s tough” and to think I was once carting around almost 3 times that much. It made me realize I am darn strong and I can do anything I put my mind too.
I also stole “Onward and Downward’ from someone because I really do want to keep moving forward and see the scale keep moving downward.

November 3, 2008 at 8:39 amI’d like to think that our taglines can change as we move through life. In high school and my 20s, I’d have to say my “unofficial” tagline was: “This is not my life; it is merely a black comedy.” It got me through unrequited long-distance love, high-school awkwardness, junkie boyfriends, a dot-com employer going under, familial disownment, bankruptcy, and so on, and so on. That being said . . . it was also a humorous version of denial and not a truly positive statement about who I am or want to be or what I care about. I’m currently In Search Of a new tagline!

November 3, 2008 at 8:58 amWhat a great idea and discussion…. my blog tagline is “In Search of Me” well because I am in search of me.. a thinner me, a healthier me, a better me, a happier me. November 3, 2008 at 10:04 amIt’s interesting to read all these ideas for life mottos and tag lines.
I’ve always liked:
“If not now, when?” which is part of a longer quote by Hillel: “If I am not for myself, who will be for me? And when I am for myself, what am ‘I’? And if not now, when?”
I also like:
“Now is the time.” It’s one of the repeated phrases from Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech.
I have to say, MizFit, that until your suggestion earlier today on my site, I would not have thought of having a tagline: I don’t eat from anyone’s candy dish.” But now that you’ve put that thought in my head. . . it does have multiple levels of meaning about my confidence to be my own person and bask in my own uniqueness, no?
I’m going to keep thinking on that one!

November 3, 2008 at 10:37 amNot sure if I have one. But there’s this line in a song on the new cd my brother-in-law made me:

It’s certainly the philosophy I believe in and strive to live (is that what a tagline is?).

– never pass up an adventure
– don’t leave room for regrets

While preparing for my second marathon, I remembered what that guy said and reminded myself that I had to run the same 26.2 miles as the guy who won and thus was born “Not As Fast, But Just As Far”
Those words have come to mean more to me than just finishing a race. When I was still renting and my friends were buying; when I was single and they were all married…when I feel like it’s taking me a mighty long time to reach a goal — Not As Fast, But Just As Far!!

But thank you for writing this Miz in one of the first few comments:
“I dont know how old you are but it took me about 30 years to get to the point where—IN ALL ASPECTS—Im living in a way I can and WANT to for the long haul.”
For now I may have to slap up the “work in progress” sign and focus on not adding to the Wheelbarrow (ok, honestly, more like a garbage truck or u-haul) of Regrets. And:
“How can I become someone I admire?”

November 3, 2008 at 12:30 pmOh, I really like some of people’s tag lines!
Since I created my blog to be a reflection of me personally, and not necessarily specifically focused on one thing (though it has evolved to be focused on one thing, LOL), my blog tagline IS my personal tagline:
“Leaving behind old perceptions and energetic investments.”
Because old stuff always needs to be replaced, we always need to be moving forward, and the places and perceptions that I invested my energy into yesterday might not be the places and/or perceptions I want to invest my energy into today.

November 3, 2008 at 12:59 pmAs someone before me this morning wrote, I LOVE your blog, Miz for MANY reasons. But encouraging me to really ponder issues, ideas, etc. is one of the main reasons. I’m going to have to give serious thought to my personal tagline (I’m so not creative), but for now, I’ll steal Nike’s … Just Do It (they’ve done a good job with it, so maybe it will work for me, too). Quit worrying, thinking, making excuses … that actually applies to all areas of my life.

November 3, 2008 at 1:05 pmwow a tagline for my life…hmmmm…well…I guess this would be something I have thought about but have never thought about putting on my blog…I would have to be this.
Life is for living, risks and ALL, or it could be…I am living to DISCOVER the MAGIC Moment……here is my favorite quote:
“YOU HAVE TO take risks, he said. We will only understand the miracle of life fully when we allow the unexpected to happen. Every day, God gives us the sun-and also one moment in which we have the ability to change everything that makes us unhappy. Every day, we try to pretend that we haven’t perceived that moment, that t doesn’t exist- that today is the same as yesterday and will be the same as tomorrow. But if people really pay attention to their everyday lives they will discover that magic moment…”

November 3, 2008 at 1:08 pmSherre? for a while in my life I fought the fact that I might not be the one WITH the answers but merely the conduit.
the one who perhaps nudges people toward finding their own answers, discovering MY OWN along the way, & creating community as we go.
this?
made my day in a way you can not know.
thank you.

November 3, 2008 at 1:53 pmLove all these comments. In the tough times, my catchphrases have always been “this is only temporary” and “you can do anything for 60 seconds.” (or 5 minutes or whatever timeframe I was dealing with to accomplish something hard) I also adopted the song “Unwritten” last year when I ran my first 5k. It said so much to me, as I was nearing the end of the 55 pound weight loss phase of my life and beginning my life as a maintainer and a runner.
My catchphrase now? Ala The Beatles….”Gettin’ better all the time. “

November 3, 2008 at 2:02 pmSomeone else already posted something I keep in mind a lot (for me, this came from Flylady.net): “Progress, not Perfection.” Am I getting something done? Am I moving in the direction I want to go? As long as what I am doing is contributing to some sort of progress in the direction I wish to move, I am making progress (however slight it may sometimes be).
MizFit says
November 3, 2008 at 2:06 pmwhy have I thus far resisted the flylady?
And on a different note: we’re getting the MEET UP planned for chicago and I’ll have details tomorrow/wed.
TWITTERED.

November 3, 2008 at 2:36 pmI think it’s important to have a mission statement and now I sit here wondering why I don’t. If I had to start with just some attributes I want to live by they would be:
be authentic
be honest
be true
be brave
Impossible, becomes I’m Possible, with just a little shift. It’s often the small tweaks in how you look at things that make a big difference.

November 3, 2008 at 2:39 pmSo many good ones on here!
I can’t wait to see what you come up with after all this pondering.
Right now I’m going with “In a constant state of self improvement.”
Please note I reserve the right to change my mind. (Maybe that can be mine tagline instead)

November 3, 2008 at 2:54 pmWhen I was a young girl trying to fit in with a body I didn’t understand and a condition (lymphedema) that made me always feel ‘less than’ and often made me feel VERY sad, my mother used to say to me, “At least you can walk.” I hated her for dismissing my feelings with that statement though now I think I know why she said it. To make herself feel better. She didn’t know how to deal with my feelings. I didn’t either.
I don’t know if it’s a real tagline I would use for why I’m on the planet because it doesn’t put a ton of wind in my sails but it does reminds me to be grateful.
Every day since the cancer diagnosis, all this b.s. with lymphedema, and all the other dramas on the planet, I can say (with a smile on my face) “At least I can walk” and be really pleased about what seems like a simple thing and not take it for granted.

November 3, 2008 at 3:37 pmI recently had a motivational, running-related picture up on my blog, and it’s one of my favorites because of the tag line on it: ‘Live Life In Big Gulps’
I’ve sort of adopted that as my personal tag line. My fitness journey has become about transforming myself inside and out, so that I CAN Live Life In Big Gulps. It’s all about trying new things, taking risks, going outside my comfort zone….then I am truly taking life in ‘big gulps’, because we don’t really know how much of it we get to enjoy do we? (not to be morbid here, but hopefully you get my drift!)

November 3, 2008 at 3:39 pmHey Miz,
I watched your video and I realized that I could put this off no longer!! I had some ideas rolling around in my head but hadn’t put the pen to paper yet. I guess I was in the groove of posting and I just didn’t want to stop the train.
So I thought about how health and fitness have entered into my life and what I did about it and I came up with this work in progress:
Know When To Make A Change And When To Stay Consistent!
This has been one of the most basic concepts in both the successes and failures of my life. Seeing a situation for what it’s worth and deciding the proper course of action. If you get too caught up in the past, you could make the wrong choice for the future. And on the other side, if you focus too much on the future, you could lose sight of the present. It’s a balancing act.
Thanks for the inspiration to get into gear!!
All the Best,
Andrew R

November 3, 2008 at 4:47 pmHi MizFit: This reminded me of a video I watched in which Guy Kawasaki advises that companies should come up with a three word mantra instead of long, convoluted mission statements. For example, Nike would be “Authentic athletic performance”, UPS would be “Peace of mind”, Wendy’s would be “Healthy fast food”, and so on. Good luck with your mantra!

November 3, 2008 at 5:51 pmMy current (and outdated) tagline is “If it weren’t for Schadenfreude I’d have no Freude at all.” But since I started on My List, that’s not actually been so true. But it’s been unbelievably true since 2001! Time for a change.
This is an interesting exercise, and I am going to bend my mind to it….

November 3, 2008 at 6:14 pmIll give this some thought but the reason I never got my blog started was I couldn’t come up with a title.
doesn’t look good for me…

November 3, 2008 at 6:25 pmI love it. I love your tagline, the explanation behind it, and also the notion that a tagline should answer the question “what is this blog about, what problen is it trying to solve”?
I don’t have a personal tagline. I know that if I had one it would be about happiness and life balance.

November 3, 2008 at 7:41 pmtwo favorites of mine are:
Rather than push against what I don’t want, simply move toward what I do want. and
Life is make believe…you make of it whatever you choose to believe about it.
But, they’re kinda long…

November 3, 2008 at 7:50 pmMy blog’s tagline is “doing the opposite of what I used to do with respect to food & fitness, every day.” That’s because I needed to make a lot of health changes pretty much all at once. But life in general? Hmmm…that’s a toughie. I’ll have to ponder that a bit more.

November 3, 2008 at 10:03 pmHoly crap. This week’s Facetime is deep and tough. I’m going to have to give this some thought and get back to ya.
Currently my blog’s tagline is something like My Quest for a Slimmer Waistline and a Bigger Bicep which is rather limited though I know I go beyond those subjects.
As for my personal tagline/vision I’m sure it will be something about love, fun, and not taking myself too seriously. Gotta think on it more.

November 4, 2008 at 5:05 amOK, looks like I’m late to the tagline party…
So, I’m thinking on this (and I find this one really challenging MizFit…)
I’m thinking (and consider this a work in progress)
Be. Do. Love.

November 4, 2008 at 7:10 amI’ve been thinking, and as it says on my blog, one of my big problems is seeking out information, but not putting it to use. As G.I. Joe says, “knowing is half the battle.” But doing is the other half.
So maybe my (shorter) tagline would be “Know it. Do it.”
Or a little bit better phrased, “Learn it. Do it.”

November 4, 2008 at 11:07 amI was thinking about this last night before bed and I realized how self-centered mine was. That’s not how I want my mission statement to be. Then again, I think I am just exiting the self-centered stage of my life. So my mission statement needs to change, along with me.

November 4, 2008 at 8:10 pmHi Miz,
Just catching up.
I live by: “A little bit of summer every day.” It counters the siren of the office & calls me to my favourite activities, which can only be renewing. Especially refreshing in the cold months!

Spring says
November 5, 2008 at 2:38 pmMy tagline is “forever spring”, meaning not only am I always striving to be completely myself, I’m also striving to remain forever young and fresh, by continuing to learn and grow and change. I used it as the name of my blog too, to remind me during a difficult time that I just have to be myself, I don’t have to have all the answers.
A while ago I wrote a mission statement for my blog and it had the added benefit of synthesizing my thoughts about my current life situation as well.
