Oh Bumbling Band
To you I won’t lie
There’s no post today
I shall explain why.
I write about fitness.
Day out & day in.
Takes time from my Playouts
Much to my chagrin.
Today I’ve no linkage.
No mindbending prose.
No video ramblings.
(We can do without those…)
I am off to shvitz.
Take this time to go run.
Or climb or do yoga.
(Not sure. SOMETHING FUN!)
You don’t know the word?
Not familiar yet?
To shvitz is to glow
To glisten. To SWEAT.
Its origin? Yiddish
But schvitz we ALL do.
Some more than others
(Uh, Ren Man? That’s you).
So leave me a note.
At the end of my rhyme:
How will *you* shvitz
With your ‘no post here’ time?
Will you run up your stairs?
Will you get out the Yee?
Will you yank out a jump rope?
Go running for me?
What ever you do
Be it solo or sport
Enjoy & embrace it
As life’s far too short!
The people at Pop Judaica have generously offered to sponsor my semi-slacker but filled with shvitz post.
Chime in below with your shvitzing plans and you’ll be entered to with the official SHVITZ workout tank.
Guys? It would make a great for-no-reason-in-particular gift for the special sweater shvitzer in your life!
(and, yeah, this Tribe member would love to know if you’d heard the word before today’s poetic rambles. I’m curious that way…)
Please to hit us all up in the comments.
Winner announced Monday.

I’m running this weekend and my girlfriend would love the tank.
BigFatPie says
April 3, 2009 at 4:07 amoh HILARIOUS! When you said ‘workout tank’ I thought you meant, like, an actual glass tank you get in to work out that makes you sweat more or something!! HAHAHA Now I realise that you meant a workout top! I need lessons in American English!
To shvitz today I am going to go through my new cardio programme designed for me by my trainer and hope to get through it without ‘shvitzing’ through my ‘tank’…have a fab weekend Miz, love BigFatPie xxxxxx

Thank you.

April 3, 2009 at 4:33 amNot a word I’ve heard before, but one I’m going to enjoy using now!
There is nothing like having a good sweat. Sitting on the front step, watching the sweat drip off is one of my favourite parts of my runs!
I also love the steam room and sauna at the gym and often alternate them with a cold shower in between!
Moonduster (Becky of Skinny Dreaming) says
April 3, 2009 at 4:47 amNever heard the word before now.
I always “glisten” while on the elliptical crosstrainer, but I might try some in-line skating at the park today, just for fun.
Linda says
April 3, 2009 at 4:47 amNew to the word.
I’ll schvitz mit jillian when my digestive system allows me to stray from the vicinity of the bathroom…flu up in here.

Hurray for Friday!

April 3, 2009 at 5:28 amI think I’ve heard the word, but I didn’t know the definition. I’m not a big shvitzer, and I have to work the next two days, so I hope I don’t shvitz…but next week I’m actually going to meet with a personal trainer finally, and then take a group class she is offering. I bet she’ll make me shvitz.

April 3, 2009 at 5:35 amHey Miz,
I have heard the word before but I did not know what it meant. I plan to insert it into my vocabulary, shivtz, I love the sound of it.
Today after a doc appt for me, there will be much bike riding, swimming and running around the park. I may even make it into the gym for some me time!
I hope that you have a great weekend!

April 3, 2009 at 5:36 amOh Lovely Miz Fit
You were quite right
I gave quite a giggle
when I saw this sight
My crazy grandmother
Bertha, her name
Was unlike any other
Yiddish? That was her game
Shvitzing, ferklempt mashugga, oy vey
would replace English swears
And my tatted mom would say
“Eh, nothing compares!”
I’ll shvitz quite a bunch
That I will do
You have a hunch
Jazzercise, boo!
My brain is spent,
off to work I go
just please pick my comment
win I must, yo!

April 3, 2009 at 6:05 amYup, I know the word. Nope, not likely to do it today. ugh. It’s raining here today — again!! — and that rules out strapping th elittler one into the stroller while the bigger one is in school. I am still recovering from a pulled back muscle, so taking time off from the gym right now. Desperately hoping to see the sun sometime soon….

Menopause? I hate you – I get no rest!
Night sweats and hot flashes

My health is at stake!
My poetry sucketh – I know it is lame
Perhaps on menopause this, too, I can blame!
Have a great weekend, oh bumbling band!
Nita says
April 3, 2009 at 6:20 amI remember times when we lived in Texas and Turkey when just sitting outside caused us to schvitz! We didn’t have to move, exercise, or go anywhere special. Just sit there.
This afternoon I’ll be hauling equipment to set up for Frontier Days then performing there. I’m sure I’ll have plenty of schvitzing going on in the sun.
Jill says
April 3, 2009 at 6:22 amNever heard the word before, but I’m extremely familiar with its definition.
This weekend my shvitzing will be from the elliptical, C25k, and Jillian. If I can convince my behind to get off the couch, that is.

April 3, 2009 at 6:41 amI plan to shvitz (yes, even we Catholic girls can sweat) by cleaning the living daylights out of my house in preparation for inviting my girlfriends over for coffee tomorrow. I’ve lived in this house for 4 years and this will be their first time here. Am I a shvitzing slug, or what?!
Sagan says
April 3, 2009 at 6:42 amHadn’t heard that term before- but oh my goodness I LOVE that tank and the fact that it actually says “shvitz” on it. I think this is my new favorite word.
Today I will be shvitzing just from trudging through the snow on my way to work! But will hopefully also be shvitzing tonight from aikido practice. Just the immense amount of focus and concentration and mental efforts has me shvitzing (told you its my new favorite word), never mind the physical aspect!
Now you’ve got me reminiscing to when I was in the Turkish bath in Istanbul… that had to be one of the most amazing experiences ever. Lots of shvitzing 😉
Stacy says
April 3, 2009 at 6:42 amI’m new to the word too, Miz, but not the action.
Its a 5k weekend for me!

thanks

April 3, 2009 at 6:47 amlove me a good shvitz. How WILL you top this post come Passover?
Valerie says
April 3, 2009 at 6:48 amLOL. Never heard the word, but I’ve definitely done it! In fact it’s one of my favorite things to do, gross as that sounds, because know if I’m shvitzing I’m working hard, and I know if I’m working hard it’s making a difference.
Plus how cool would it be to watch people’s faces as they read the tank and try to puzzle out whether it’s an obscenity? 🙂
V.
Felice says
April 3, 2009 at 6:52 amIf the rain holds off, I’ll be shvitzing during an outdoor run or two this weekend. Probably some Jillian Michaels’ No Mor Trouble Zones, too. And does watching the final 4 count? I might shvitz a bit then!
Have a great weekend!!
And, yes, get your gait analyzed. It’s easy! It’s free! 🙂
Miz says
April 3, 2009 at 6:53 amV? I thought the SAME THING with regards to the obsenity.
charlotte says
April 3, 2009 at 6:55 amWell, my grandparents are Jewish so I was pretty young when I first heard the word. Although I daresay it took me until college to figure out it meant “sweaty” specifically and not just generally dirty. Meshuggeneh was another toughie;) That was the word she used whenever I asked too many questions and she didn’t want to explain herself.
Diana says
April 3, 2009 at 6:56 amWhen I looked it up (nerd, I know, but you provided the link so I couldn’t resist!) they said you could use a sauna. I’d like to do that! But, maybe walking around campus today trying to get them to straighten out my financial aid counts? It’s quite a hike! Or, my big presentation today that I’m not ready for! lol. I will sweat then for sure!
Diana says
April 3, 2009 at 6:57 amI had no idea about the book until Callie posted the link. Am I under a rock or what?

April 3, 2009 at 7:08 amNice post today MizFit 🙂
My sweat (shvitz) will be from pushing the grocery cart around like a mad woman without hitting anyone and rushing home with it to get ready for work!! I love grocery shopping so it will actually be fun. And a workout top. I don’t even have one, i just use old t-shirts! So that i could use.
Laure P says
April 3, 2009 at 7:10 amI shall be grocery shopping, cleaning house (this counts, doesn’t it?), and maybe some outdoor fun if the rain ever stops!

April 3, 2009 at 7:13 amThat is too funny! My husband and I were watching Seinfeld last night (an episode I’ve seen about 4 billion times) and Elaine said, “Hey, I’ve been stuck in a shvitz for six hours.”
I’m still recovering from my oral surgery, so no shvitzing for me. Doctor’s orders. Hopefully I can resume on Monday.
Debra says
April 3, 2009 at 7:13 amHappy Friday Miz! This weekend I’m going to break in my new WAVE and do some more fun workouts on the Wii.

April 3, 2009 at 7:15 amI’ve heard the word before.
I feel horrible, so I may not do anything, and accept that this week was a failure, workout-wise. But I took a lot of my life back from the internet, so there’s that.
I may also do pilates or yoga if I’m feeling up to it later.
Annette says
April 3, 2009 at 7:22 amI haven’t heard the word ……so sorry to say 😉

Will do a 45 min cardio walk at the track later when hubby is home to watch kiddos
will repeat 30-day Shred with hubby this evening (he’s trying to drop about 25 lbs before summer)
And that’s how this mommy will shvitz it up today 😉

I read every comment (so many people ask if I do!) & love the fact together we are far more powerful/wise than even just the sum of our various parts.
(Cue sentimental musical interlude)
I’m off to shvitz at park.
See you sunday with an update of sorts.

That said, I am going to really enjoy doing it from now on! 😉
Part of my shvitz for the day will be moving about ten 125# bales of hay into my barn. Always a fun time, guaranteed to get your heart rate up.

April 3, 2009 at 10:19 amGeez, ya gotta get up at 1 a.m. to be in the first 50 posters here!! I first heard the work schvitz when I was in high school gym class MANY, MANY years ago. (Suffice it to say, I remember the 70’s vividly.) My schvitz for the day is a 45 min. total body workout beginning with a 30 min. recumbent bike ride. Followed by a lovely sauna and shower. Don’t need a tee, so I’m not gonna beg this time….maybe next. 🙂

April 3, 2009 at 10:35 amI used to live in NYC, so yeah, I’ve heard the word before. Today is a day off for me from formal exercise. I shall spend it … shopping. Sometimes that works up a shvitz. I like to see how many bags of groceries I can drag into the house at once. I’ve gotten up to 9. I usually don’t buy more than that. I’m also buying kitty litter today, so I’ll get to see how my musckel strength is progressing. Do I dare go to get it without a cart? Now that could be fun … since I need Fancy Feast & treats, too, I’ll probably have to get a cart. I can’t carry all them little cans in just my hands.

April 3, 2009 at 11:12 amNo, I hadn’t heard that word before, and I love it!!! (I’m a word magpie, and Yiddish has such wonderful ones.)
Mild schvitzing today with a walk at lunchtime and (hopefully) squeeze in some strength stuff this evening. Tomorrow? Major schviting, although not of the workout variety: Thing 2’s 5th birthday party, and we’re partying down with 10 fellow Things in addition to Thing 1 and Thing 2.
Wow, lots of people doing events; good luck to everyone racing this weekend!

April 3, 2009 at 11:27 amHaha yes, I’ve heard of the word. Let’s see…
I walking in an MS walk with the pops so I’ll shvitz if it’s warm out. Going to try not to be a chazah (that’s my favorite word!) with all the free nosh at the walk. Then I hope to go to the gym for some serious shvitzin.
On Sunday, my puppy will kvetch until I take her for a run, so more schvitz then.
Ah Yiddish…it’s like our own secret language (that everyone tries to take from us…I hate it when people say “Speil”…it’s pronounced SHpeil, folks!)

It’s supposed to be warm and sunny this weekend, so I’m looking forward to a nice long walk — and hopefully, some time digging in the garden.

April 3, 2009 at 5:15 pmMiz.. you are so good with the rhymes. And thank you for inspiring me to “schvitz”. I have been doing pretty good this week, even went running without music as I decided I had to get my run in and I had 30 mins before dentist appt. and I didn’t want to fiddle with child’s gameboy headphones.
I am filled with dread thinking about looming deadlines, I think I will go “schvitz” to release some stress.
Have a great weekend!
PS. My weekend plans: Lifting with Cathe Friedrich..
Long run with Cardiocoach

April 3, 2009 at 9:45 pmThat’s a new word for this gal – thanks for broadening my vocab with such a fun word. 🙂
Today was my off day, so no shvitz’n for me, unless you count the “wrangling” I did when I took the two kiddos and dog for a walk during our “sun shower” this afternoon (in Seattle we have sun breaks and sun showers sprinkled in our days . . . sort of like other areas of the country where there are rain showers).
Tomorrow I’ll get in plenty o’ shvitz’n – short run and weights!

April 3, 2009 at 10:31 pmHoi hoi,
Today is my rest day,
Tomorrow I shvitz,
14.2km of pavement I’ll hit.
I’ll run over a bridge,
and under a river,
A decent bit of shvitz I will deliver!
