Once upon a time, back in the dark ages when MizFit was a little girl, her sister had a birthday party.
Now MizFit remembers very little about this entire event except for an exchange which occurred between her mom & one of SisterFit’s friends immediately after the gifts had been unwrapped.
MamaFit: I love the present you brought SisterFit. All the make-up, nail polish and perfume—she will love that. What a great gift.
Friend (wrinkling nose in distate): Yeah, I hated it but I figured SisterFit would like it.
Even though I was only about 11 at the time it really struck me how accurate SisterFit’s friend’s assessment was.
The friend was the consummate tomboy who’d probably see a gift of such girly proportions as a punishment. SisterFit? She, as our mom predicted, loved the gift & used it right down to the last powdery smudge of eyeshadow.
At that age I was just beginning to think outside of myself & just starting to have the tiniest of realizations that simply because I didnt enjoy something that didn’t mean it should be banished forever from the universe.
(Let alone have the ability to step back, shop for someone else, put myself in her shoes, and select a gift *I* wouldnt like but she would. Hell, I barely have that ability now at 39 years & ten months old!)
Why am I boring you with this childhood memory? (Unlike some posts I have a point.)
A few weeks ago I was contacted about doing a giveaway for PerriconeMD skin care products.
I’d heard great things about their anti-aging products from a friend if by friend you mean OPRAH which I do yet, since it wasnt a product I’d be motivated to use, I almost said NO THANK YOU.
Believe me, my lack of motivation isnt due to a lack of need (Hello 40, too many years spent lifeguarding, & not enough sleep!)—Im just like SisterFit’s friend above: it’s not my deal. it’s not what I’d choose to use to perk myself up (Hello french pedicure! Greetings new tattoo I love!).
And my thisclose to sending a Nah not something my readers would at all be interested in! email to PerriconeMD is what brought to mind the story I shared above.
The fact that MizFitOnline isnt all about me (shocking, I know) but is all about respecting what makes people feel good about themselves.
Im still pleasantly shocked by how none of you, no matter what you thought in the privacy of yer own cranium, left tattoo-comments criticizing my decision, lecturing me on how Id regret it or chastising my poor role modeling for the Tornado.
So there you have it.
My MizFit AH! HA! moment of the week:
A chance to win PerriconeMD’s Advanced Face Firming Activator & a re-realization that just because Im not into something it doesnt mean others wont be and in the case of the firming activator I’ll probably greatly regret it down the proverbial road.
You can be entered to win simply by sharing your pick-me-up.
Be it big & costly (like my tattoo) or cheap & relatively fast (like my morning meditation minutes) please to hit me up in the comments below.
(USA only. Winner announced Monday)

May 29, 2009 at 2:05 amTending my garden is one of the few things that always picks me up. Watching the beautiful life cycle of the various flowers, shrubs & trees as they change from season to season always fills me with a great sense of wonder and accomplishment. Whether planting, weeding or watering, whether I spend a few minutes or a few hours, when I am done I feel refreshed and renewed.

May 29, 2009 at 3:09 amIt’s funny…such a simple story and moral but so many of us forget this! We are so quick to judge what other people should or shouldn’t do, will or won’t like, and it’s all because we are basing it off of our own judgments and standards. I wasn’t bored at all reading your childhood tale…in fact it’s a good reminder 😉

May 29, 2009 at 3:33 amMy pick-me-up? A fresh bouquet, facial, sunshine, or an item completed off the honey-do list. These days exercising in a cool breeze on a sunny day has been a real blessing – Alaskan winters are LONG!

May 29, 2009 at 5:16 amI think this is a revolutionary thought Miz. Yes. Revolutionary. I have turned down many a give-away opportunity because it was something I might not purchase myself (and in fact this one sounds familiar…) yet… DUH! I am actually not the only person in the universe and readers might have appreciated some of these.
Maybe I should reconsider the Poo-pourri giveaway! (This was an anti-stink product for bathroom use with either the best or worst name in product marketing history, depending on how you feel about it).
Favorite pick me up? Er, wrote a whole long boring blog post about it today. Endorphins!

May 29, 2009 at 5:47 amMirror, Mirror on the wall,
When I look in you I want to squall.
I’ve been wondering if that stuff really works. When I was 70 pounds heavier, I had no wrinkles. But, now, EEEEEKKKKK!
My pick-me-up is shopping in the regular size section of any clothing store. I don’t always buy but it gives me a high to be able to try those non-plus sizes on.
debby says
May 29, 2009 at 5:48 amWell, first things first. In the interests of fairness, don’t you think the face-firming stuff should be offered to the oldest and wrinkliest bloggers first? LOL! I win!
For a pick-me-up? So many things. My doggie on my lap. Reading a Bible verse or two. Some creative work–quilting, rug hooking. Yesterday, it really picked me up to write out a list of things I needed to accomplish, and to check them all off one by one during the day. Not all my lists fare so well.
And of course my big pick me up this week was ordering my sewing table–I am so excited. Almost as good as a Dr. Seuss tattoo!

May 29, 2009 at 5:58 amI hear you. Sometimes it can be difficult to step outside that little box and think from everyone else’s perspective and ignore our own! That’s why it’s so important to do what’s right for us as individuals and not worry about necessarily conforming to the masses (translation? I adore your tattoo courage and continuous putting-yourself-out-there-ness).
Some of my pick-me-ups even though I’m not USA: a long walk, getting sugared, brushing my teeth, listening to quality music like Hey Rosetta.

My pick me ups: a long phone call from a faraway girlfriend, a night out with my husband, snuggling with my kiddos, knitting, sitting on the porch with a cup of coffee while watching the sunrise. Just thinking about all of these things makes me smile! 🙂

May 29, 2009 at 6:44 amToo bad it’s USA only – this old bag could probably use some wrinkle control (of course, it would have to be industrial strength….I’ve actually been wondering about that old trick where they used to use tape under the hairline to hold up their sagging faces…. Let’s see; I like listening to cheesy 70s and 80s music (very loud) like Abba or Michael Jackson. Stuff most people are ashamed to admit they like.
I like bridges over water. (troubled or otherwise!) It’s the main reason I can’t ever see moving out of this area… there are so many great bridges. I love looking out at the water…
Good coffee.
Bad movies.

May 29, 2009 at 10:19 amGood timing! I was just talking (yesterday) to my 13 year old daughter about how one the most important life-lessons she could learn is to be empathetic (to be able to put yourself in someone else’s shoes). I told her that you don’t have to agree with what other people say and/or do, but its important to try to understand it. And there you go…writing about the same thing.
Anyway…some of my “pick me ups” include:
* reading blogs
* running
* napping
* go laugh with a friend
* call my husband (he almost always makes me laugh)
Have a great weekend MizFit!
The Crazy Woman Inside Me says
May 29, 2009 at 11:07 amI enjoyed that sweet little peek into your psyche, Carla. 🙂
I’ve always loved dressing up, wearing makeup and jewelry, and obliterating any sign of gray hair. Now that I (a former Chicagoan) am living in the Pacific Northwest, the natural, outdoorsy, fresh-scrubbed Oregonian women eye me with curiosity because this fancified big city girl stands out like a sore thumb.
I have made a concession though. I sometimes wear *gasp* clogs. But I refuse to wear granny dresses with my hiking boots.
A couple of positive things I’ve noticed as I’m losing weight and getting more fit is that my eyes look bigger because there’s less fleshiness surrounding them–and cheek hollows are beginning to emerge, giving my face a more sculpted rather than round look.
So I’d have to say my current pick-me-up is discovering it takes less makeup to make me look human in the morning. 😀

May 29, 2009 at 12:38 pmAnother great post MizFit. Jeez, I would try lots of things these days as I age. It is funny how our thought process changes once we get up there in age & things start to head south! 🙂
Anyway, I can say that my weights are always a pick me up for me. I do love them BUT… wait for it & hope this does not upset some since it is not “healthy” food wise but is mentally for me….
I love to sit on the weekend at a bookstore with my hubby & just read BUT also enjoy my flavored coffee & my big ole REAL cookie.. and I mean big!! I don’t feel guilty about either the food or just sitting there & doing nothing productive. I think that itself says something. When you can get to the point of just “hanging” and not feeling like you “should be doing something”. We all need to relax in our own way!!!

May 30, 2009 at 5:51 pmPick me ups are laying in hot sun (preferably by the pool after a swim), buying clothes a size down from where I’ve been stuck (woo hoo!), a pedicure once in a while with the mani thrown in cuz why not, and if I really want to treat myself and can somehow afford it, there is *nothing* like deep tissue massage.

May 30, 2009 at 11:01 pmI have a postcard on my refrigerator that my high school English teacher sent my parents in 10th grade essentially saying what a great person I am. It always makes me feel happier to read it.
Also, a good book.

May 31, 2009 at 6:34 amMy pick me up is always music! Just this week…a song came on my iPod that inspired me to run while I was on my walk. I only ran for 75 feet but the music and the lyrics energized me!

May 31, 2009 at 7:17 amI am that girl who has been wrinkle-phobic forever. My friends in college used to tease me because, at age 18, I was already slathering on anti-aging face cream. I would love to try this!!!!!!!!!

May 31, 2009 at 8:07 amMy pick me up – what I do in place of meditation… I write lists of appreciation. I just write and write and write, every day. EVERY time I write, I click into some inspiration, a better feeling and more energy. For me – this tool is like gold – soothes me and makes every day better and better and better.

May 31, 2009 at 2:40 pmI like to look at pictures of my new(ish) grandson, Jude. He is such a joy! I look at his sweet face and remember my kids when they were babies, and it always makes me smile.
I always thought I’d feel old when I became a grandmother, but I feel so young and alive when I hold him.

May 31, 2009 at 3:32 pmMiz,
I actually used some of his stuff years ago when his book came out. I really didn’t see any difference and it’s very expensive. Also if one doesn’t stay out of the sun and watch their diet I’m not sure wrinkle cream would help even if it did work.
If there is one that would work it would be viral and we’d all be without wrinkles.
About the tattoo. I’m happy you got the tattoo of your dreams. My kids all got one when they were in college and don’t regret it. They’re in their 30’s now.
If you don’t have a professional job and it is hidden who cares? Live and let live.
