Now we need to make sure the room is jam-packed.
Consider yourself commanded to be there if you’re at the conference.
Unable to attend? Feel free (wink) to tweet the session or post about it on your blog.
In my opinion it’s as simple as this:
If we arent willing to step up & guide the next generation as best we can what hope is there for change?
When: Friday July 24th.
What time: 1:15-2:30
What is it?: Blogs & Body Image: What are we teaching our kids?
In a society where more young girls fear becoming fat than they fear cancer, nuclear war, or losing their parents, some bloggers are taking a stand against teaching their children learned behaviors that affect their body image.
Heather from MAMAvision, Carla Birnberg, aka MizFitOnline, Claire Mysko, Kate Harding, and Roni from Roni’s Weigh have worked hard to improve their own self-esteem, and are asking the question:
How can your blogs be a conduit to transformation?
Join this session to discuss how your writing can impact kids, whether you should think twice before publishing that self-deprecating post, and how you have the power to influence positive change.

July 5, 2009 at 5:18 amI’ll ask my sister to do a blog post about this, too.
Do you just want us to cut & paste what you have written?

July 5, 2009 at 5:42 amI have a ticket to go but am still not sure if I can attend.
What struck me in this post is right at the end there …
“…whether you should think twice before publishing that self-deprecating post”
I say not only for the next generation should we work to eliminate doing this but also for ourselves & each other as adult women who were each girls ourselves.
I’m trying to catch myself & worked a little at doing this a while back by posting & celebrating my workouts with “sweaty pics”. It was liberating!!!
Have you heard of Operation Beautiful? Placing Post-Its in public places containing messages of an uplifting nature for girls/woman to find. “You are Beautiful just as you Are” being a popular one.

July 5, 2009 at 5:48 amMy post today was about Operation Beautiful so how appropriate that I could link to you today. (which I just did)

July 5, 2009 at 6:29 am(I can’t get my comment to show up when I link your Operation Beautiful post for Katschi. FYI)
This is such an important, important toipic for discussion.
I don’t have a blog and am not on Twitter.
Is there another way I can help?

July 5, 2009 at 7:22 amSounds like it’ll be a fantastic session! I agree with Katschi- this can absolutely be applied to ourselves and other adults, too. Anyone that could potentially be influenced or affected by what we write. There’s a lot of power in that.

July 5, 2009 at 9:42 amOooh I’m so excited for this one! I hope they talk about food blogging/tracking food in the internet. I see younger and younger bloggers (14? 15? 16?) start to hop on this trend.

July 5, 2009 at 12:46 pmTo be honest, I almost left without posting, thinking “no daughters or young women in my life on a daily basis, not going to the conference, not my battle/passion”. And then I thought of a young blogger I just happened upon the other day. And I want to be better equipped to encourage and teach those that i do cross paths with…I’ll be tuning in, and definitely sending good vibes!
Congrats!

July 5, 2009 at 2:14 pmThis is an important issue, which I had not considered. Yes, we must be responsible about what we blog. We never actually know who is reading what we write and publeish on the internet.
Thank you for reminding me.
Have fun at the conference.

July 5, 2009 at 3:24 pmI have often wondered about food blogs and how closely tied posting every morsel could be with trigger reader who have/have had an eating disorder (Im in recovery).
I had not, however, thought of the power of words to bring people down or trigger nearly as much.

July 5, 2009 at 4:33 pmSetting it up as an appointment on my ITouch NOW. With appropriate warning, because I am an idiot about time at BlogHer.
We were having this conversation on the website just this week- how can we as bloggers impact the next generation when it comes to healthy eating, exercise and body image.
All good things.
Now I’m excited.
deb says
July 5, 2009 at 4:36 pmOK. And how about I promise to live-tweet and/or live blog the session? Both might be a challenge with the speed people talk.
And, if you’re lucky, there will be video or audio files of the session to link to later.
I could always use my own video camera, I suppose… YES YES YES to *anything* you’d wanna do! The other women on the panel are so freakin amazing Id adore for those NOT at the conference to be able to get some of their wisdom…
Gemfit says
July 5, 2009 at 4:52 pmI wish I could be there but I will definitely blog/tweet about it. In fact, I think I’ll start the post now and make a week of posts for that week.
And I’m definitely in favour of the live blogging or tweeting of the session so that we can all follow along.
I may not have any daughters, but I have a niece and I have cousins and I’m determined to support them and not teach them to hate their strong, beautiful bodies.
Katie says
July 5, 2009 at 5:13 pmI’m so pumped about this, Miz!!
It is so important to think before we hit publish and remember that other (younger AND older) people are impacted by our words.
