While Im always the one-shoot-wonder I knew, since I was opening the bag on camera, there was NO OPTION for a second shoot.
I have to admit I was a little nervous.
Not so much that Id stammer (totally do. always do.) but that my reaction might NOT be one any pork rind company would appreciate.
Please to enjoy my Five Days Left In My 30’s Trying Things I Never Thought I Would Monday Facetime.
httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3M-TvV0lKRs
(FYI what Im eating in the video is the Southern Recipe Pork Rinds PLAIN)
My thoughts:
- YES (they’re an alternative to chips & pretzel’esque snacks and a *great* one if you roll lowlow carb).
- NO (they most likely wont take the place of my beloved beef jerky.Β myriad reasons but the biggest being the fact they’d be instantaneously smooshed in my bulging backpack).
- NO (I didnt yet get up the nerve to try any other flavor than plain).
- YES (I did get stuck, as I chewed, on the very notion that they were made from pig skin andΒ Im not sure I could really ever get beyond that fact.Β A by-product of my being a Jewish MizFit? who can say…).
- NO (if you didnt TELL ME they were pork rinds I would not have tasted the pork’age/known.).
Now you.
Have you tried the rinds?
Do you love em? Loathe em?
Are you, as I was, mildly intrigued but have been way too fearfulsemi-ickedout to place one in your mouth as of yet?
And, more importantly, if you’ve tried em have you used them to create FAUX FRIED CHICKEN??
(Ive been curious about that chicken ever since I worked for Atkins Nutritionals…)
Please to hit us all up in the comments.
(And you just never know—I mightcould select one of you, at random, to be the lucky recipient of the REST of my box of flavored rinds.)
I’ve never tasted pork rinds, but I’ve always wanted to. Ever since I saw Homer in The Simpsons eating them, I’ve wanted to try them. Same with Twinkies.
Have you ever tried pork crackling? Does it taste anything like that?
Hey Miz,
Ha!! Very fun…the “live” taste test!
No, I haven’t tried them….and not sure I’m ready to. Although that said, I’m pretty good about trying “most” things…but I’m with you that the whole idea of eating pig skin is not something I find overly appealing.
Enjoy the rest of your bag of these!!
So funny as I have friends who are addicted to these too!
And they do Atkins as well.
I have never been curious as just the name makes me, as you said, think ICK.
loved the video.
LOL
I am a big pork rind fan.
Grew up eating them and you are missing out, MizFit, if you don’t try some BBQ flavored.
I tend to have mine with beer which would negate any health purposes I think.
Ever since I saw Homer in The Simpsons eating them, Iβve wanted to try them. Same with Twinkies.
I was hoping someone would mention my fitness role model HOMER. That is totally what I thought of/channeled in the video (gummy Venus de Milo anyone? loved that one as well).
and no.
and NO.
Never tried pork crackling (what is it?) and dont think I even will.
Miz, who is so much more a CHOCOLATE FAN she’s never had a twinkie either! Next video perhaps…
I love the bbq pork rinds, but I have them only rarely because of the fat. They’re a great snack on a road trip.
I laughed HARD at this mainly because I imagined you spitting them out as soon as someone yelled CUT!!!
(I also loved the Jew Eating Pork Rinds subtitle π I didn’t know you were a tribe member too!)
hahaha- its funny to hear you say they’re good after seeing the look on your face! Way to give them a go! I always see them at the stores down here and have wondered, but I don’t think I’m as brave as you π
I’ve never had them, and I don’t think I ever will. We aren’t Jewish, but we don’t eat pork, or beef for that matter. Video was very entertaining as usual!
I indeed have had the ol’ pork rinds in my Atkins day, ate them with blue cheese (oh the though completely repulses me now!)
Have not had them since and probably never will again.
Love that you are trying new things, having an open mind though. That is great!!
Oh and my weekend? Benn awesome, away from computer mostly but enjoyed it immensely with the fam at the local arts festivals and art walks. Very busy, active and fun time!!
Would you really give away your extras?
Could I have them if I’d post a video of me trying them on my blog?
I’ve been curious too….
“Hmm, I’m hungry. I think I eat some pigskins fried in fat. Genius!” I quote myself from many moons ago in a time far away that is NOT now.
Never tried them, and I don’t think I’ll start now. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to get past the fact that it’s pig skin.
Yep, I tried ’em. Didn’t love ’em. There are many, many other things I’d rather eat.
They really are made from the skin of a pig?
I’d always thought it was like buffalo wings.
Not really the name.
Ick.
not just no but HELL NO!
I did Atkins, hated pork rinds. Atkins/low carb people crush them and use them as coating for fried chicken I’ve seen seen cake recipes using them, pancakes and yes, even used as pizza crust… I’m not joking.
I have never tried pork rinds! But I must say that for me it’s more of the idea of them being fried/processed that has kept me away. Although the fact that they’re made from animals doesn’t thrill me either. Good for you for going out on a limb! And you kept all the face making within diplomatic range;)
I did Atkins for months and lost a bunch of weight.
I rgain it all when I stopped but I also regained my energy levels so it was worth it.
I tried a different recipe for the fake fried chicken and it was really good/not piggy π at all.
I’ll see if I can find it for you.
Thanks for taking one for the team…I, too, have never been able to get past the “it’s pig skin” fact to try one…and after seeing you eat one, I still don’t have any desire to. Blech!
P.S. Can’t wait to see what the other “last days in your 30s” things are!
When’s the official birthday?
and you can sign me:
I love the pork rinds.
In private.
Where people can’t make fun of me π
I tried pork rinds once and thought they were the nastiest tasting thing. Although – they were BBQ flavor, and maybe that didn’t help any.
I kind of put them in the category of Funyuns – made from something real, but totally weird.
FUNYUNS! Id forgotten those and they are another thing Ive never tried (ZERO chance of that happening either)…
The birthday is 7.18
Im actually not that into birthdays at all—this one just grew because of my birthday tattoo.
I still cringe at the memory of trying real pork skin. I had Easter at a friend’s house, figured that I love chicken skin, I’d probably love that, too. I had to spit it out, was about the foulest texture/taste ever. I’m not about to voluntarily eat that in any form every again. I have an ex-bf who eats pork rinds as a snack, I can’t even look at them.
I love pork rinds.
They are my road trip food!
I don’t know why I can’t do the pork rind thing, since I’ll eat pork ribs quite happily! But I gotta watch the salt, so there’s really no reason for me to work at it.
Love the “live” taste test!
I used to eat pork rinds as a kid, but haven’t had them in years. If I have something with that much fat, I want it to taste better! But I don’t hate them or anything.
Just remember, they came from a time when you used *all* parts of an animal when you butchered. There are people who love cow tongue and pickled pigs feet and all sweetbread. . . all sorts of nasty things are considered delicacies to somebody else.
Great video! Yes, I LOVE pork rinds, especially the CRUNCH! I never really thought much about the pork skin factor. My (brazilian & puerto rican) family cooks the whole pig for holidays, and the crispy skin has always been the best/tastiest part to me. π
Ok this is what your post has me contemplating:
Why don’t we call it CHICKEN RIND?
Are you serious about mailing your excess?
I’d love it!
Used to love pork rinds when I was a kid! Haven’t had any for years, tho’ because of the fat.
Have to admit, the expression on your face cracked me up! But good for you for trying them.
buffalo wings… FROM Buffalo, not OF buffalo. They originated at the Anchor Bar and Grill a half century ago. Although a lot of places all over the country claim to have “Buffalo Wings” Those of us from Buffalo generally scorn other wings.
As for pork rinds… yes, I’ve had them. I’m fairly adventurous in what I’ll try, but pork rinds are so mundane. My concern with pork rinds is how they’re made. Usually they’re fried and over salted, which means a ton of calories and sodium. I’m guessing the stuff you have is baked and/or dehydrated, because you didn’t mention oil in the ingredients. That might be worth a try.
You can also make “cracklins” out of poultry skin.
OK, Miz Fit, next we want to see you try rattlesnake and Rocky Mountain Oysters on your Monday Facetime π
I haven’t tucked into a bag of pork rinds in more than 40 years. I liked ’em then, probably still do.
I loved the look on your face at first bite.
Love me some Hot & Spicy pork rinds but I haven’t had them since Atkins diet. Get this: I used to grind regular pork rinds and coat chicken with them and then saute them for fried chicken. LOL Yep. It was actually very good.
Great, now I’m wanting a pork rind.
being from the deep south (MS) i grew up eating pork rinds. i haven’t had any in YEARS, but had a craving for them last time i was in MS (i don’t live there anymore) and i couldn’t even swallow the things. just too greasy for me now that i am eating healthier
Your videos are so much fun!
No, I have never tried pork rinds, but I have wondered if they really are what their name says. And I guess they are… Well, I don’t think I’ll ever try them…
When I was not vegetarian, I would no way, no how, not on your life – go near them! Major ICK factor! You are a very brave woman to just try them like that – in front of a rolling camera! LOL!
northern gal here, never tried these pork rinds & not sure they are on my top list of foods to try. Yes, I’ve made it this far in life and am sure I am not missing anything. BUT…now that Ive seen you try ’em AND you didn’t die, if I run accross them I might reconsider potentially trying them. Thanks for the review!
P.S. Pretty please don’t send me the rest of the box!
Haha!
I am with Fab Kate.
Rocky Mountain Oysters next!
Are your videos ones where we really can place requests?
I’m a new reader.
You are soooo much braver than me. I don’t think I could eat a rind….much less on camera for the first time. I don’t think I’d ever want to replay the faces I would make…lol!
My uber-fussy boy-child LOVES pork rinds as do I. YUM.
Miz – if you do decide to try a twinkie, your next step will be attending the Minnesota state fair where you can get deep-fried twinkies on a stick.
Out of curiosity last night I looked up the Wisconsin state fair and food – you should see the mile-long list of food on a stick. Un real!!!
Nice job on your vid.
They’re really more-ish! Something I’m better off avoiding altogether…
you guys CRACK ME UP!
Entirely.

I know I’ve tried it, but can’t get around the thought. I can’t even remember what they tast like…just the thought makes me cringe. I have firends who love them…but started when they were kids.
What is faux fried chicken? I guess I’ll look it up!
I am such a lover of beef jerky too. My favorite snack. Have NOT tried the pork rinds; not sure I will, but maybe I could just lick the salt off??? BTW, your arms are gorgeous!!
I’ve tried pork rinds and pork cracklin, but I’m not a fan of either. Beef jerky, however, I adore! I really love turkey jerky. I used to buy it when I lived in California, but I can’t find any here. *sigh*
Oooohh never tried but absolutely want to. That sounds so different! And am especially intrigued after seeing the expression on your face when you tasted it, hehe.
Am coming to Texas (San Antonio) in August- pick me pick me for a taste-test! π
Hmm, can’t say that I’ve ever tried pork rinds. I’ve honestly never wanted to either. I don’t know if it’s the fact that I grew up vegetarian or that I grew up during the 80’s anti-fat campaign, but they always seemed kind of a nasty concept to me. I’ll stick to the wonton noodles ^_~
Ick, I don’t think I’ll ever try those. I had a friend who used to love them, and just the smell wafting from the bag was yuck to me. You are brave. And entertaining. π
San Antonio is pretty close…we could meet at the side of the road somewhere and I could film you chowing down the BBQ PIG SKIN.
Laughed out loud when you SMELLED THEM!!
LOL!! The post and comments crack me up!
Pork Rinds? What are you thinking, lol!!
Happy upcoming birthday, buddy!
having a child with allergies, I’ve tried lots of things I never thought I would try, and the chicken recipe is one of them. It’s ok…too salty but when ya can’t have most breading, it’s a great alternative.
thx for the kudos on my blog. You’re great!
Oh, and did I miss where you said what specific jerky you like?
Wow! You are so pretty! All I noticed in the video was your awesome muscles! i really need to start exercising! lol Anyway never tried them, never will. haha
– Lisa
Never tried pork rinds. Once when I was very young I really wanted to try them, mom wouldn’t let me, and soon after I became a vegetarian. Never looked back for the pork rinds! The look on your face was priceless when you went to take a second bite – deep breath, HERE WE GO!
Shrimp chips. Those are the chips at a Chinese restaurant. LOVE Them.
I love -and miss the crisp- which one can only get from something fried. (sorry crunch is not the same thing).
I’ve tried and like pork rinds. If you don’t have any taste-test volunteers in Austin, bring them to BlogHer. I’ll trade my nearly new canister of MetRx (which I can’t use) for your pork rinds.
There are a LOT of things that I will NOT try because I know what they are. I tried to do the mind over matter thing for about 2 days when I tried Atkins once, and tried the rinds. They kinda got stuck in my throat. I couldn’t eat them, knowing what they were! Yeck! I know lots of peeps that have been on Atkins and just love, love, love the pork rinds…me not so much! I admire you for trying them at all, let alone on film!
When I was an Atkins dieter, I loved pork rinds. In fact, I have not only tried the fried chicken you mention, but I love it. Oddly enough, I was talking about it this morning. Unfortunately, it doesn’t really fit on South Beach Steve’s current dietary regiment.
You’re brave. I’ve never tried them. I have the same stumbling block as you … can’t get past what they are.
I’m way more adventurous with anything not animal based.
Never tried ’em. Too strange for me. Maybe you meant chicken fingers, not wings. π YES YES YES *that’s* it. oops….
This product isn’t sold in the Netherlands so I don’t have an opinion.
But may I compliment you on your great body: you look fantastic!
YIKES! I congratulate you on trying them.. braver than me .. NOT! I loved watching you give then a try though.. no desire on this end.. now cookies & bread… that I will try! π
SIGH. sometimes I hate that Im an adult. Back in my childish college days Id have tried to drag you down the bad path and begged you to make it ONE! LAST! TIME!.
should I attempt it?
any tips?
Only you.
I used to eat some brand of spicy pork rinds during my atkins days. Those weren’t bad but the plain…*shudder*. Beef jerky and turkey pepperoni only for protein snax now, kthx.
Mizfit keeping it real just for us readers. You were brave to do a one take taste test.
I tried pork rinds in the past (when I wasn’t a vegetarian) on a couple of occasions and never cared for them.
LOVE pork cracklin’s. (And make no mistake, they are crackliN’s, not crackliNGs. Just sayin’. ;D)
HATE pork rinds.
Why? No idea. They’re essentially the same thing. But I love the former and loathe the latter.
My dad was happier than a pig in … well he was happy he found these for the first time (the 60’s).
When he told me what these WERE …ICK*ICK*ICK!!!
Did I mention that I don’t even like the thought?
BLEH.
That’s my opinion. π
and yes, I did try them using my “am I eating dead pig skin?”
face.
Miz,
You are o-so-brave to taste on camera. Nice way to count down to your b-day. Many more happy ones !!
I won’t lie…I love pork rinds..anything salty and crunchy really. I try and stick with tortilla chips instead of the pork stuff. π
i hardly ever eat bacon anymore… pork rinds? kinda make me shudder π
I hope you don’t have nightmares after eating that crap. What’s next human butt skin deep fried to a crackly crunch? The whole idea of taking a meat by product, frying it and sticking it in a bag is gross, sort of like beef jerky.
hahahaha
(well, I thought it was funny)
Why don’t they use lambs and goats and turkey and cow skins and horse skin? Cat skins?
Ohhh I love pork rinds!!!
Hi, I have already seen it somethere…
I can’t get past the name of them. Totally disgusting. Yuk!
I think my 2 year old just came out!
Oh my gosh! Me too…I have NEVER tasted a fried pork rind. The thought of eating pig skin gags me. I even did the Atkins in the 70’s and 80’s and everyone was eating those t’hings. I couldn’t get past the thought of eating an animals skin. NO THANK YOU!
I’m like you. I love beef jerky, especially the homemade stuff my husband makes. Yummy and it’s real meat, not the skin of the cow. Ewwww….just can’t get past that skin thing. So Hannibal Lecter. π
