What did I learn from the below?
- I can hold my flip camera out in front of myself and video on the go.
- Rest is highly UNDERRATED (and this from a woman who rates it pretty highly!).
- The people at the Life Cafe (That’s a shoutout to you Lifetime Fitness!) think Im a nutjob.
Please to enjoy.

On a more serious note, Ive been fortunate enough to be invited to a roundtable on Wednesday hosted by the amazing fantabulous Gabby Reece *and* I’ll have the opportunity to ask questions.
So lay em on me.
Any queries you wanna throw her way (anything from fitness to nutrition to general healthy living)?
Please to hit me up with those (and, of course, your insights on my impressive active recovery sunday) in the comments.

September 14, 2009 at 3:55 amI love that you carry the video camera everywhere, Miz.
If only you worked out at my gym in Austin I’d TOTALLY have joined you for coffee.
Trish says
September 14, 2009 at 4:02 amOh and please ask Gabby if she DID STRUGGLE to lose post baby weight and just made it look so easy.
Or was it so easy because she’s so very tall.

Hey, I’d join you for a cup, too, Miz!

September 14, 2009 at 4:28 amI struggle with the taking time off and wondered if you aren’t embarrassed?
You don’t worry that people see you at the gym just hanging out and not exercising?
How do I get to the place of not caring what other people think?!

September 14, 2009 at 4:39 amWe used to live in Tallahassee where she went to college and it was always fun to see her play. She is amazing, and absolutely stunning!
Enjoy your roundtable discussion.

September 14, 2009 at 4:45 amI am JEALOUS.
I love Gabby Reece.
I’d ask her if she was fulfilled when she modeled or just did it for the money 🙂
I’d love to meet you for coffee, Miz.

September 14, 2009 at 4:47 amI believe in rest days planned and unplanned. It gives your body time to rebuild and recover and be ready for another day. I always tell people when they are feeling run down that they have a Lifetime of workouts ahead of them, they can afford to sit this one out.
Speaking of Lifetime….I’m thinking of checking one out in my neck of the woods soon. By the looks of it, it looks like I could be at home there.
Hanlie says
September 14, 2009 at 4:47 amI think it’s perfectly all right to go to the gym and not work out. I’m actually considering going for a sauna on some of my “off days”!

September 14, 2009 at 4:54 amahhhhh! I am taking a recovery Monday today and I am very excited. Its been quite some time since I took a whole day off (due to lots of teaching, the need to fit in running, etc). After a heavy workout weekend, I know my body will be just as thrilled. I love that you utilized the gyms day care for your me time! I think all mamas should do this! One lady who takes my step class on Saturday morning will finish step, leave the kiddos in day care, and run and do her food shopping across the street. Then she comes back and grabs the kids- I think this is SO smart!

September 14, 2009 at 4:59 amI love when you do the movie references.
(Have you seen his latest? Extract.)
I have had far too many rest days lately.
Must workout today.

September 14, 2009 at 5:03 amLove the rest days! Am actually looking forward to a run this morning ’cause I’ve been doing other things and rationing the impact on my knees. But rest days rock when I know I’ve been working hard and have one coming!
Love that you go to the gym often enough not to feel weirded out going without working out. I harbor too much gym-avoidance to go there just to hang. (Plus, yours looks like so much more fun!)

September 14, 2009 at 5:41 amA couple of weeks ago I was dragging along through every workout, so I took FIVE whole days off. I had to stop by and inform them so they wouldn’t think I’d died.
Figured what the heck, I may as well totally rearrange my workout routine when I get back. So now I’m doing different combos, different variations, etc. I feel newly refreshed from switching things up.

September 14, 2009 at 5:46 amDon’t you get antsy watching other people exercise?
Feel guilty at all about being ‘lazy’?
It is a challenge for me to take a day off and if I went to the gym I’d DEFINITELY CAVE.
Please ask Gabby about her hottie husband 😉
the Bag Lady says
September 14, 2009 at 5:47 amHmmm, one of these days, when I’m a little better acquainted with the peeps at work, I may take the video camera and show you what it looks like there! Of course, it would be other people working out, not me, but I figure watching is almost as good as doing.
It’s not?
Damn.
Alice says
September 14, 2009 at 5:51 amWish I didn’t feel so guilty on my rest days. It probably has something to do with procrastination or sheer laziness preceeding my decision to rest.
I’m jealous. Your gym looks WAAAAAY cooler than mine!

September 14, 2009 at 6:02 amI love gabby Reece. In fact, I have put some quotes from her on my “quote of the week” area. She is an awesome example of doing it right! OK, I wish I had some of her height but not to be!!! You are very lucky to be meeting with her & can’t wait to hear all about it!!!
As for your recovery day, that is the way to do it! Realize that your bod needs it & rest. Many have to think this thru because we can do this when really, we are just being lazy. I think with time & the longer you work out, you learn when your bod needs rest vs. when your mind is saying something that really is not what the bod is saying.. 🙂 I have been there!
I took days off on my playcation & take 2 days off a week for rest. I try to listen to the bod outside those take off days but I admit that I am bad at that!
Thx for the cute video!

September 14, 2009 at 6:10 amHaha, I love this video 🙂 Coffee trumped my morning run on this Monday! I’ll do it when I get home from work, but I just wasn’t feeling it this morning. Snooze button was much more appealing.
Wow, enjoy your time with Gabby Reece!

September 14, 2009 at 6:29 amI love that your rest day is spent doing something for yourself – even if it’s just a cup of coffee and some time for thinking/relaxing/vegging! My rest days from working out are spent at work – wish I could figure out how to change things up in that regard.
Gabby Reece seems so fit and healthy (being tall and tan helps, lol!) – my question would be “what is she doing to promote a good body image to her daughters” or something along those lines. Fun that you get to meet her!

September 14, 2009 at 6:40 amThanks for mentioning not to feel guilty about leaving your child in the work-out child watch. My daughter loves playing dress-up and never wants to leave when I get back – it’s nice to hear you mention it because I do often feel guilty about it…like I should be spending every minute with her. Not the case!

September 14, 2009 at 6:49 amI’ll rest tomorrow 🙂
I have to say that I do not like the idea of fitness centers having all these food outlets in them. I understand the economics, but I see too many people doing 100 calorie workouts and having 700 calorie snacks. They look like it also!

September 14, 2009 at 7:03 amThat’s the cafe at your gym? Wow, it’s super nice! I didn’t know gyms even came equipped with cafes!
Just a few days ago I started to go for a ran, went for about 10 or 15 minutes and then said to myself “eeehhhh not feeling it” so I turned around. I think it’s important to NOT exercise if we aren’t in the mood for it. Otherwise we might grow to resent it.
And Amanda- I think that if you know that next time you’re going to be exercising, and if you think of yourself as an ATHLETE, the self consciousness disappears. It doesn’t matter what other people think; it’s you and your body that count.
Though unfortunately sometimes gyms seem to be a place full of judgment. Sighs.

September 14, 2009 at 7:06 amI would love to know how Gabby transitioned for the heavy hard workouts while she was training to regular workouts without losing her gorgeous figure? I’m sure she trained really hard while playing professionally and I want to know how she does with “regular” workouts?

September 14, 2009 at 7:11 amI would like to hear about that too..what amanda and meredith were talking about.
I think it’s great that you could be a role model for taking me time and rest when you need it. We all think your super human at times you know 🙂 And, some of us are still trying to shake off the mind set of all or nothing…that you need to work out like a mad woman to be healthy. That you show the real side is awesome.
Miz says
September 14, 2009 at 7:15 amMeredith? Amanda? Diana? I’m gonna do a short video on that for next monday.
Then look to all of you for YOUR thoughts/methods not to cave to the madness as I only know what works for me (& my clients).

September 14, 2009 at 7:47 amThat coffee shop looks amazing.
I do have a question for Ms. Reece: When she was growing up (or now), did she find it difficult to make girl friends because of her looks or her fitness?
(I joined a gym. So far 3 guys have talked to me, and 0 girls. When I ask girls something, half the time they won’t even take their earbuds out. And I’m not that fit looking).

September 14, 2009 at 8:47 amMizfit, it is so great that you share the real you with us. It helps us to see ‘normal’ in someone whose lifestyle we admire. I love that you love coffee, and I love that you took a rest day that was not planned when you realized you were tired. I am learning a new normal from you.

September 14, 2009 at 8:48 amFirst… way nice cafe at your gym. Mine has a “protein drink” bar but no seats.
I completely believe in NonActiveRest days. Even NAR weeks on occasion. And find that my body responds to them so well. Have not been to the gym in 4 days and today cannot wait to get in.

September 14, 2009 at 11:25 amI like Gabby Reece, but I’d ask her how she thought regular pregnant women could manage to do her Pregnancy workouts. (See my attempt here: http://fitfig.com/?p=744) It was especially hard not having someone on hand to help me out like she did in those videos.
Oh, and I think you’re a nutjob, too, but in the best possible sense. 😉

September 14, 2009 at 12:28 pmWay to go, Miz! Or perhaps it’s “way to NOT go,” being rest time? 😉
Jody (comment #17) said something that really clicked with me: “I think with time & the longer you work out, you learn when your bod needs rest vs. when your mind is saying something that really is not what the bod is saying.”
It really spoke to my comment the other day, about being troubled about how I’m perceiving working out. I went for so many years being out of touch with my eating and physical activity (too much and too little, respectively), that I often have trouble wrapping my brain around the “intuitive” approach to either one. And trusting myself to do the right things “naturally.” But I feel like gradually, I’m getting there. (Writing it down actually helps me, because I can look over a week, or prior weeks, and see that actions are becoming habits.)
I feel that my current level of obsessiveness about working out hard is more about wanting to be prepared for my upcoming sprint tri. I’m excited, I know I can finish it, but part of me is saying, “Won’t it just GET here already so I can DO the darn thing???”

September 14, 2009 at 1:34 pmPubsgal, I think from reading your blog and your comments that you are PREPARING not obsessed in a “bad way” —-in that every time I worked with a client and we talked about amount of training it was always with the caveat that, should she be training for an event, the plan we’d worked up would need to be CHANGED.
Im training for life right now.
oh
and that DANG marathon 🙂
POD that totally made me giggle too. She freakin loves that daycare. I need to take advantage more & go and READ there…

September 14, 2009 at 2:21 pmLove the video! I used to shun rest days because I felt like I had to be burning calories all the time (which our body technically does anyway), and that rest was a waste. Then I injured my knee and was forced to take a prolonged rest from working out, and while I struggled initially, I came to see the value in rest. Now, my problem lately has been in taking too much rest! I tell myself I’m too “tired” to workout that day, but mostly I’m just being a wimp. I need to be honest with myself.

September 14, 2009 at 4:09 pmYay! I love Monday facetime 🙂 Tomorrow is my rest day, soooo looking forward to it. It’ll be an “active rest” with some light yoga in the evening. But sleeping through my usual 6am workout, and having the time to make a fancy breakfast before work is one of my favourite ways to spoil myself 🙂
That’s an awesome gym cafe! Wow, mine’s just a couple tables and a vending machine 😛
