The tip of the day, in my never to be wishy-washy opinion, is to go forth and find ye a protein shake that you like.
As we have discussed ad-nauseum I HEART the Met Rx.
The old school original Met Rx chocolate flavor.
According to their website this is why I *should* like it:
METAMYOSYN® Protein Blend
The “Original” protein meal replacement powder that revolutionized sports nutrition! Combining METAMYOSYN® protein, L-Glutamine and a variety of vitamins and minerals, MET-Rx Original Drink Mix is a great addition to your fitness regimen.• Helps support muscle mass*
• No Fructose or Sucrose added
• 3g of L-Glutamine
• 100% RDA for calcium
• High in Antioxidants
According to the nutrition information this is why I mightcould like it:
Calories 260
Calories from Fat 25
Total Fat 3 g 5%
Saturated Fat 2 g 10%
Cholesterol 10 mg 3%
Sodium 380 mg 16%
Potassium 1,190 mg 34%
Total Carbohydrate 19 g 6%
Dietary Fiber 3 g
Sugars 3 g
Protein 38 g (you all need this, right? because youve been doing your weights so diligently?)
Intellectually (and, at heart, MizFit is truly a nerdy intellectual) I know I should like it because the man who started the company, Dr. Scott Connelly, actually developed the metamyosyn protein to use with patients post surgery (or so the story goes. if you’re interested there is more information here.).
Dr. Connelly wanted to create something which would help post-surgery patients regain their health & prevent the loss of post-surgical muscle loss.
None of these reasons are why I love the Rx or why I think everyone needs to find a protein shake she adores.
For me it’s as simple as I think Met Rx tastes great, it’s pretty good for me, and it’s easy fast and SWEETCRAVINGsatiating—what’s not to love?
You may never “need” your shake (as always, whole food is a better option but prework out or ICE CREAM CRAVING Im always glad I have shakestuff on hand)—-but at least it’s there just in case.
Please to enjoy MizFit Hearts the Met Rx: more than you ever wanted to know.
Preview of coming MizFitTractions: Tomorrow shall bring us Jackie Warner’s favorite protein shake concoction.
YES it’s more whole food’y.
YES it’s more supplement’y.
YES, again, The Warner (‘s shake) has kicked my (shake’s) arse.

December 30, 2009 at 4:46 amI tend to only eat whole food but do agree with you that having an option like this in the house would help.
I tend to only eat whole foods unless I’m snarfing down the double stuffs 🙂

December 30, 2009 at 5:51 amI have my favorites, too…but you know that already! 😉 My trainer has challenged me to incorporate a variety of protein powders like hemp, pea, and soy in addition to whey because she’d like my body to get variety…perhaps that will be a goal of mine for the new year?!

December 30, 2009 at 5:59 amI love MetRx, too. I once had a love affair with Ultramets, and I also really love Dessert.

December 30, 2009 at 6:27 amI love, love, love protein shakes! I like choc pure protein from publix mixed with milk or water, frozen strawberries, banana, flax and 1 t of unsweetened dark choc cocoa powder yum!
I also love the vanilla I mix that with some vanilla extract, frozen banana, milk, fresh spinach and flax….YUM! 🙂

December 30, 2009 at 7:11 amI can’t find the MetRX ingredient info on the site. Do you have it? I’m curious as to what’s in it!
I just recently got a vanilla vegan protein powder made with proteins from hemp and pea and such. I agree with you that you may never NEED it, but it’s good to have on hand JUST IN CASE. Now I have a chocolate power and a vanilla powder. I may want to switch up the flavours 😀

December 30, 2009 at 7:44 amOMG, that Tornado!!!!!! Miz, I started drinking Met-Rx before people even knew about it. The meal replacement was not even a packet. You had to buy 2 containers & mix them together & I bought it at the Met-Rx gym by me here in southern CA. In fact, the headquarters were here back then AND during my early years part time stint as a personal trainer, I sold Met-Rx until it became a mass market thing. I know, I am old!!!!!!!!
Now, I use the straight protein stuff & mix in other things as my bod has changed with time!
I love the stuff too& I also use a whey isolate protein powder too!
OK, I have to say again that Tornado is so cute!

December 30, 2009 at 8:34 amProtein shakes are something I really WANT to like, but it always makes me feel a little sad to give up some real food for one. So, I end up not drinking them and the powder expires on me.

December 30, 2009 at 9:03 amI like my shrek shake in the morning. I tend to have more energy than if I ate a typical breakfast.
I am so happy to have something else to try. Thank you for the suggestion. I’m hesitant to spend the money on some stuff in case I don’t like it. It’s very helpful to have the recommendation.
I hope my kids like it as a snack as much as the Tornado. What a cutie.

December 30, 2009 at 9:13 amI have yet to find a protein powder that I really like. But, I don’t like pure protein shakes…I like to add the vanilla flavored ones to smoothies. But, again, I have yet to find one that I like…especially for my tight budget, so suggestions are much needed and welcomed. Thanks!

December 30, 2009 at 9:28 amI cannot use the MetRx – allergic to the casein in them. But I am an avid user of Optimum Nutrition’s Gold STandard whey.
I just cannot get enough protein (without too much fat) during the day if I rely solely on whole foods. Though I tend to limit my use to right after my workout -and maybe right before bedtime.

December 30, 2009 at 9:33 amI should really try out that brand. I have a big container of the kind you get at Wal-Mart. It’s okay, but it does have like 52 g of protein per shake. 😉

December 30, 2009 at 9:37 amThese protein shakes sound like a great option for a lot of people!
I do fine with dairy and am not a vegetarian, so i seem to do pretty well on protein intake without them. And my green smoothies seem to satisfy that “milkshake” like craving.
Plus, I find the taste of protein-supplemented drinks and bars to be a bit fake and distracting; seems to be a personal thing. But should I ever decide to go the protein shake route, thanks for the recommendation!

GIRL I SO SO SO GET THIS and am the same way.
I refused the shakes (mature much? not at all :)) until I realized how I loved them frozen and eaten with a spoon.
FOODtastic.

December 30, 2009 at 10:25 amI make my own because I don’t like the sucralose products.
That’s a honking amount of protein, though! Yay!
I did get a kick out of the metRX for dogs, LOL!

December 30, 2009 at 11:13 amI have not been able to like any kind of chocolate protein, but I do love my Syntha 6 Caramel Latte – mix that up with some ice and water in a blender and it comes very close to a Starbucks Frappacino! I balked at protein shakes at first, but came to rely on them after my morning workouts – and my muscles are much happier for it!

December 30, 2009 at 4:45 pmI have yet to try the shakes. Mostly because I hate dragging the blender out. 😀 I avoid using the food processor for the same reason. LOL Using the knife is a better workout though, huh?

December 30, 2009 at 5:11 pmI’m going through treatment for my chronic knee pain, and my doctor is pushing me to get more protein for muscle growth. I’ve been eating a heckuva lot of chicken, but this sounds like a much tastier way to get my daily dose. Thanks for reviewing it. I’ll have to try the shake!

December 30, 2009 at 8:21 pmWait wait wait. Did I just see you can freeze protein shakes and eat them with a spoon?! Why did I never think of that? That’s amazing!
I’m not much of a shake fan at the moment, but I think I may start using them eventually for extra calories and, of course, protein.
