Weight Watchers® Cheese Wedges: a tale of 2 taste-testers.

Yes FTC the cheese was free.

Once upon a time I discovered my fondness for all things Laughing Cow cheese.  Im too lazy to look up how long they’ve been around I have no idea precisely how long the company has been in existence but this ‘once upon a time’ was eons ago.

Back in the dark ages of my childhood before itouches or ipads.

I still use the LC on a daily basis for everything from smearing on celery to smooshing in my hot oatmeal.

As a result I was excitedflattered when I had the opportunity to try the new Weight Watchers Cheese Wedges & cream cheese before it officially went on the market (it should be available in stores in most regions now).

Try spreadable cheesy goodness before it was readily available to the masses & for *free*? I was in.

I greeted the Fed-Ex man at the door & ripped into the box before it even hit the kitchen table (Im know to sometimes merely shove aforementioned box in fridge to ‘deal with it later.’).

I seized my fave flavor from the bounty (garlic & herb) & crammed its soft triangular goodness in my mouth.

And waited for my tastebuds’ usual jubilant response.

I got nothin’.

In fact what I received was a kindasorta this is a little rubbery, woman! what’s happened to our cheeeeseygoodness? rebellion from the ‘buds and the tongue-in-general.

I ripped open the package of plain (my second fave.  I need to clarify here that I was sent the Parmesan Peppercorn and Jalapeño Pepper and did not taste them.  I couldn’t do those flavors justice as I wouldn’t like them under *any* circumstances) plopped the triangle on my tongue & same response.

I cant lie to you, People, first I was shocked and then I panicked.

I knew I would never do anything other than an honest review yet I was shocked as Ive always adored all things Weight Watchers.

From their foods to their philosophy Im a fan.

I plopped in a kitchen chair & panicked.

Until this strode into the room:

and demanded to know Why mama whining? (Yes I need to work on the definition whining. Pouting & whining hath become interchangeable up in herre.  Duly noted)

I spared her the my-job-which-isnt-a-job-because-I-do-it-for-free-sent-me-cheese-&-I-dont-like-it-what-do-I-say? rant and merely offered her a snack.

Of Weight Watchers® Cheese Wedges.

Because to know me in real life is to know how *crazy* wasting food makes me.

And she shrugged & said SURE!

And she tasted it….and she adored it.

She ate three triangles in that sitting and snarfed much of the cream cheese later on a bagel (but only after I forced her to take this shot):

Since then, much to my shockedperplexedamazement, shes asked for her ‘new cheese’ instead of our old standby Laughing Cow.

As much this blogger would probably skip the cheese were there only Weight Watchers® in the house—the Tornado is *entirely* the other way.  She’s now snubbing the cow in fave of the ‘watchers.

So today I present you this review & the Ah ha!/reminder moment it provided me.

One woman’s Laughing Cow is another Tornado’s Weight Watchers® Cheese Wedges.

One woman’s less fiber and MORE calories is another Tornado’s one point highER fiber snack.

We all approach life cheese in different ways & it’s important to remember that our own beliefs/opinions/reactions are neither the best nor the only ones out there.

and yes.

  2. Mmmmm…cheese. 🙂 I love Laughing Cow, too. I love the individual WW cream cheese packets, but will admit that after your review I’m a bit afraid to try their wedges. I might just do it though at some point. I did recently try the Sonoma Jacks Light wedges (the pepperjack kind) and while it was a bit spicy, I liked it. Their stats also seemed almost a bit better than LC, so I might try some of their other flavors. And I love how you turned this into a lesson about how everyone is different (and that’s okay!)!

  5. I can’t decide if I’d love based on this or not.
    Which I guess is an exmple of why I shouldn’t base all my purchases on reviews 🙂 especially when it comes to food.

  7. No rubbery cheese for me, please. I like to stick to the most lightly processed cheese as possible, and I have a feeling WW cheese is nothing but highly processedness. 🙂

  10. aha! I’m loving this picture story. But I gotta ask in general terms – would buying the WW cheeses all the time for little childrens send wrong body image signals? I dunno.

    First, yes. I do think Id have NOT NOTICED the rubbery as much had I smoooshed the cheese in my oats as I frequently do with my LC.

    That said 90% of the time for me the cheese is a snag-as-I-dash-past-fridge-and-PLAIN snack.

    Now LC chesse…OMG…my childhood too…visiting my Nana…snacking on the cheese and not just the wedges but the baby bells and the little tiny blocks…that come to think of I just plain do not see anymore.

    Thank you for the honest review…I have heard similar comments in the meeting room as well, though the cream cheese seems to get rave reviews from all I have heard it from. I have not yet tried.

    As far as body image and eating it, I think the image comes from us. WW in general can be viewed as just helping people get and stay healthy…it begins with us…as parents. But you are keenly aware of that one! =)

    Oh and said shirt of yesterday is bought…awaiting input for it now.

    As far as cheese goes…I don’t eat much of it so when I do I tend to gravitate to full fat blue cheese or feta. The stinkier the betta…although everything goes betta with chedda!

  16. How funny! I myself big puffy heart laughing cow, so I do not even notice there are other brands out there.

    I find it so interesting when I read about a food on a blog and they say it rocks their world, so I have to try it. Then I say “m’eh”. And other things I totally adore that others try and dislike.

    Good thing our tastes are all so different or Kraft might really rule the world………..

  17. Good going on finding a lover of the “not-so-loved” cheese. It’s tough if you taste something and it really doesn’t turn you on to actually think someone else will like it.

    I’m with you on the Laughing Cow love, so I’m now a tad nervous about trying the new Weight Watchers brand, but given the Tornado’s uber-love of the new cheese, and my own tendancy to act like a toddler occasionally, I think I’ll give it a chance.

  22. I love you both (but perhaps the tornado more for her incredible fashion sense), but I need me some real cheese.

    I’m all about my WW (I let them use me to flog their product for crying out loud), but I’m also big about them getting OUT of the food game.

    I do love the review though.

    But that kid especially.

  25. Very interesting review Miz. I just recently tried Laughing Cow, which I had heard nothing but positive comments about, and found I was not crazy about it. As you say, to each his own. 🙂

  26. So true, we all have different tastes. I don’t usually eat cream cheese or laughing cow, but i do love English strong tasting cheeses 🙂 A small amount goes a long way!

  27. I **LOVE** laughing cow. it’s def. one of my staples. Not a huge fan of WW products – altho I live in Canada.. and just find that they’re too expensive, and chemical..

  31. I currently enjoy WW’s cream cheese spread (in Denver you can buy it in a tub or in individual/single serving tubs) and like it quite a bit.

    But your review definitely has me thinking twice about trying the wedges.

    I’m a big fan of Laughing Cow Light Cheese, too. I’ve tried some of Weight Watchers products and they seem pretty hit and miss, in terms of both taste AND healthiness. Some of their products are loaded with bad ingredients (even if they’re low calorie/low fat), but other products, like their english muffins, are quite reasonable for the ingredients list AND they taste great.

    But I do LOVE their health philosophy. It’s very admirable for a “diet” company.

    Thanks for the review- it reminds me of a recent experience with the boyfriend in which I told him how to make his own cereal (which I love), and which he did NOT enjoy. We’re all different and we have to just figure out what we like… it’s good to try different things in the process, though!

Funny interesting how tastebuds even in the same house can differ, now I’m torn do I try it or not, I’ll probably pick up one and see, the big question is how does it compare in price because laughing cow is pricey unless I pick it up at costco and they only have original no French Onion (yum) or garlic herb (2nd yum).

  37. the skirt is actually a dress (everyone thinks its a pettiskirt in person too which has convinced me when she outgrows the TOP I shall lop it off and make a skirt. TMI I realize) and its from Nordstroms.

    way overpriced.

    MizFit is a SUCKA (or at least this one time anyway :))

    and SEGUE into pricing.

    I need to look/check on that as I honestly do not know how the two compare (I, too, get the LC at costco).

    and the SIZE thing? they seem comparable in person—the ww are bigger but flatter/thinner than the LC.

    I giggle that every time I pull up the post to respond/read comments the Tornado says MAMA I WANT SOME CHEESE.

    Thanks for the honest review – from both you and your daughter. Good to get both sides – I’ll most likely stay with my LC (bought in the 3-pack at Sam’s – how convenient!), but it’s good to know that there are other options.

    I didn’t even know WW or Sonoma Jack made competing products to LC Lite. I find that LC Lite works best with other things (it spreads nicely on apples); I’m not crazy about it on its own. I much prefer regular cheese.

  44. I love my laughing cow, and I must say… after you review, I don’t know that I’ll be giving the WW cheeses a try. I like the creamy texture of laughing cow almost as much as the taste. Rubbery doesn’t sound good. 🙂

  45. Man, now I want to buy my baby a sparkly pink tutu!! All the cheese talk is a moot point for me, not being able to eat dairy (not that I’m AT ALL bitter seeing as cheese was my favorite food ever), but I do thank you and the ‘nado for trying it out! And for being honest!

  46. I eat only soy cheese & parmesan. And, it has to be organic. Shrug.

    Different tastes makes the world go round from fashion to books to Tv to movies to workouts and diets.

    If everything worked the same for everybody, we wouldn’t have much to talk about. Would we? LOL

  47. oh my the tornado is making my biological clock tick! She and the 6 year old version of my baby sister need to sit down and have a fashion discussion.

    When I stopped Weight Watchers I stopped eating light/fat free cheese. It was too rubbery and tasteless to me.

    I love laughing cow though. I should pick some up the next time I go to the store.

  49. How funny – I sat down with my mid-morning cruskits-with-LC Cheese-and pepper and opened up your post! I <3 my Laughing Cow cheese on crackers or celery with a little ground pepper.

    I’m not sure about WW cheese though. I never liked their cream cheese and I’m too big a fan of LC I think. But it’s interesting how different people react so differently.

  53. What’s in them? Some of the WW food is gawdoffal. I’m not sure I’d let my kid eat it either (read the ingredients and run!) Pls don’t take that as a criticism toward you. WW yogurt is far too sweet for palatability. But some of their “ice cream” products are ok.

    BTW, the photos are adorable and that skirt is crazy cute.

  54. I haven’t tried the WW cheese wedges yet as I find their products to be kinda “meh” on the whole.
    What I love about this story is how the adorable Tornado knows her voice and isn’t afraid to use it. Love, love, love that!

  62. Thanks for the honest review!! I just tried the peppercorn and have to agree that Laughing Cow is much better. I’m just starting WW’s new program and love it but not in love with the packaged food in general. LMK if you have any favorites from WW in general.

  63. Your little girl is adorable! Thank you for the funny review. I have since tried the wedges and wasnt a huge fan either, they have such nice string cheese but I will also stick to LC on this one.
