if by answered you mean to the best of my current ability—which I do.
First, Im compelled to say how honored and excited I am by how many of you are willing to join in this crazy little plan.
Virtually or in Las Vegas.
In this misfit’s mind neither one is “better” or more fraught with “achievementnessment” (technical term).
On to your questions.
There is no way I could be ready to run a half marathon by 2012 let alone this December. I don’t know that I would even want to as I am not a runner. I’m a little disappointed Miz that this is all about running.
OK thats not really a question (wink) but I received more than a few comments/emails along these lines so I wanted to clarify a bit ( more to come as the weeks progress). This is about goal setting and achievement. This is about declaring December the 5th 2010 as an international day of REACHING OUR GOALS.
Whatever the goals may be.
You might choose that as the day you don a tank-top & wear it all!day!in!public! (I loved this goal and it’s one of yours) or the day you finally walk a 5k in your neighborhood with a gaggle of girlfriends.
The goal doesn’t matter. It’s all about the achievementnessment (see above).
I can’t afford to fly to Las Vegas. Are you going to organize other meet ups for races?
I loved this suggestion/question yet am barely keeping my head above the proverbial water as it is. Perhaps we could organize, closer to December, a list by states. Would you–the royal– be interested in that?
Are you using a training program? Which one is the best?
This is where I can give you my answer and would adore lottsa chiming-in from YOU below.
Ive chosen this program—for no other reason than I saw it and it felt do-able. My last half-marathon was so…horribly trained for (responsibility firmly on this woman’s shoulders) I pretty much know ANY plan I find and *stick to* will work. And I wanted to be sure to select a novice program.
I am planning to walk the marathon in Las Vegas. Is anyone else walking? I wish I could run it but I can’t because of limitations.
We selected this race partially because of the fact it’s so walking friendly. Ive received about 6 emails from people planning to walk in Las Vegas & about the same number of tweets as well.
What also stuck in my mind about this email is the “wishing s/he could run.” I want to clarify again that this isnt about running. It’s about achieving whatever your own *personal* biggest goal is….and our achieving en masse.
Are you really getting married? During the race?!
Yes…and no. I actually had no idea getting married while running was an option …and when I found out & shared with Ren Man I discovered it wasnt. For me anyway.
There’s no way he’s getting his arse out there for a running marriage and I cant say I blame him.
As a result I plan to run in my bridal tutu (photo above) & have 100% deferred the wedding plans to him.
All his choice (Im game for anything from Elvis to traditional) and Ill let you know as soon as I do.
Are you running the half in your VFFs? How did you like running in them?
Maybe (it feels way too early to tell) and post coming all about that next week.
Is MizFit going to be all about running now?
Yes, someone actually asked that and I was glad she did. The answer? Hell to the NO!
Will it be all about the GOAL SETTING & ACHIEVING for a while? Perhaps.
I am heading to Vegas to run with you! Will there be a meet-up??
We are still figuring this out but the answer is YES. Where? When? All that is to be determined. Thank goodness it’s only July
So there you have it.
Some of your questions answered and a place (below!) for you to add in any others.
Did you decide what your 12.5.10 goal will be?
Are you joining me virtually in running?
Literally in VEGAS?
Please to hit us up with all that as well.

July 4, 2010 at 2:07 amI am so excited for Vegas, I will be there in the flesh and blood, running the 1/2 marathon. I can’t wait to find out the meetup details – I think I’m as excited for that (if not more) that for the actual run itself 🙂

July 4, 2010 at 2:19 amI’m so annoyed that I can’t be there. Boo! We will have JUST gotten home from our round-the-world honeymoon (Barcelona! New Orleans! Honolulu!) so no Vegas for this Gem.
And considering the wedding-craziness going on already, I may have to readjust my goal to simply still-working-out-and-not-going-grey but otherwise, I shall run some-distance-still-to-be-determined.
And I’m jealous of your deferment of all wedding plans to the Ren Man. I wish my Boy was at all interested in taking over any/some/all. I’m tempted to make our registry all about me to spite him, but he honestly doesn’t care. It’s all about the honeymoon for him!

I’m sad to miss the tutu run though.

July 4, 2010 at 5:11 amI’m coming to Vegas! I’ve wanted to do this race for years.
I registered for the half, and I’ve booked a room. Husband is joining me – he won’t run but hopes to meet up with friends. Plus we’ve never been to Vegas!
I run lots of half marathons so this race is not so much for the challenge, but my full marathon on Oct 31 will be. My third, but the first two I have run/walked… will run this one!

July 4, 2010 at 5:39 amVegas is weighing in the back of my mind. The idea is being tossed around. A marriage and a walk down the long rock and roll 1/2 marathon. The only running we may do is off to a chapel. This fell into place as we have been trying to decide a date for the nuptials since the proposal in January. We shall see…That is the bigger goal than anything else…stepping out of the comfort zone and into a permanent partnership.

July 4, 2010 at 6:48 amI’d LOVE to be there… I really would… and I’m thinking SERIOUSLY about it. Not that I could run a half marathon, mind you, but I could certainly walk it. There are three things standing in my way: (1) money, (2) a late fall surgery scheduled, (3) Moving on Dec 1st. If I can get through that, then I’ll be there. I’m not holding my breath, but this is one meet-up I’d really hate to miss!

July 4, 2010 at 9:35 amFirst, Happy 4th to you, Tornado & RenMan! AND, that is the cutest pic ever!!!!!!! Well, maybe second to my pic today! 🙂
I do run about 10 miles on my Sunday run or some may call it a jog so I bet I could do a half with a little push. I used to go further but in my older age, my flat & bunioned feet don’t like the outside as much….
As for goal setting, mine is outside the fitness realm.. I will still try to get myself into a mag as a reader model… may not get there but I will try. I had decided to give up but your post made me rethink that. Also, I will attempt not to be “poor in terms of money needed to survive” by then! 🙂
Miz, thx for the great post & if I meet my money goal, I will come see you in Vegas!

July 4, 2010 at 1:50 pmSigh – I would so love to meet up and do the 1/2 marathon with you, but I’m due to give birth about 4 weeks before that date. Please Please Please do another half marathon sometime ok? Then I’ll totally renew my passport & join you. In the mean time my 12.5.10 goal is to go for a 5K walk/jog/run that day while the hubs watches all THREE of the kids BY HIMSELF. This is a goal more about leaving my husband in charge than about doing 5k. I have a hard time separating myself for my kids because hubby travelled alot while the first two were very young, and I had no family to ever leave them with.

July 4, 2010 at 4:04 pmThe thing that stuck out the most to me in this post was the fact that you aren’t married. Somehow in all the time that I have been reading your blog, I completely missed that! Clearly sometimes I am off in lala land.
Anyways, that really stuck out to me because even though I have strong opinions on marriage for myself (won’t get into it now but suffice it to say I think I’m more the common-law type than the wedding-type, at least as far as my thoughts are structured at this point in my life), I still made the assumption that you and the Ren Man were married. Huh. Interesting the way we automatically think those things just because of the way society is set up!
But back to the whole point of this post, I love that you’re focusing on GOALS as opposed to just running. I shall have to think hard to come up with a good goal of my own for December 5th!

July 5, 2010 at 12:02 amYou better BELIEVE I will be there! WIth bells and sparkles on!
I’m not gonna kill myself training. My ankle is still in limbo-land so I’m gonna do Whatever My Body Feels Like Doing on That Particular day – be it sorta running, jogging, walking, ambling, stumbling, skipping, trudging, lunging or whatEVER. I want to finish. In one piece. That is all.
And I want to have FUN and be part of any festivities whatsoever. Personally I would love a group outing to see “O” or “Love” because I am a total Cirque du Soleil FREAK (have seen both those shows twice already and always ready for more) and will arrange group ticket sales if others want to go.

July 5, 2010 at 7:14 amI’m always inspired by reading about how others achieve there goals, both personal and professional. While not a runner myself, I would be very interested in hearing the details of what it takes to train for a marathon. Learning about the commitment and sacrifices necessary to take on that type of challenge can translate into information that can be used in our every day lives.
I wish you much success.

July 5, 2010 at 8:16 amOh my goodness….one of those “comments” you reposted made me chuckle. What is it about running that scares people so much? Why is there the need to question (I changed that word three times) and not just support? And here is the thing Miz….please continue just being who you are. If who you are right now is about running because you have a goal, then be with it with your entire heart. You cannot please everyone all the time. I love your commitment to your goal.

July 5, 2010 at 10:35 amWow, how I would LOVE to make it to Vegas to run the half, but there is no way I can make it there that time of year. However, I would like to try to running my own half (even if it’s by myself) on that date here on the east coast, if I can do it physically.
Right now, I’m sidelined from running for a month. I had just decided I was going to run my first half in October in Atlantic City, was having some problems with my foot (surgery last November) and went back to the doctor to make sure it was okay to start training for a half marathon. Turns out it’s not okay right now.
But hopefully, things will get better soon and I can start training. If I can’t do my half in October, hopefully, I’ll be good and healthy and can do it on my own in December!

July 5, 2010 at 5:30 pmI’m not running. I’m not even sure I’m going to meet a goal or have some sort of achievement in mind for Dec 5th. But December in Las Vegas would be a good month. I’m not into that city for some reason. Is it too much electricity? At this point in time, I’d have to commit to virtual. I’m a lazy committer.
The photo is very cute. I noticed too how you are running away from the BBQ which is pretty much what I spent my weekend doing.

July 6, 2010 at 12:25 pmI’ve always wanted to get in some definable endurance running, but am having a difficult time adjusting to training in the most arid part of E. Washington. Any tips on how to pull up my “big girl panties” and cope?
So, my goals will be two fold… to find (make) time to run or bike every day (I already teach Yoga, so at least I have stretching covered) and to be able to tell myself how grateful I am to have the physical and mental stamina to do these things, honestly.
Thanks for another great challenge!
