Many thanks to Jared for taking the time out of his hectic life & running schedule to answer two of our questions.
Are you enjoying the marathon training itself?
Answer:Β I am enjoying some of the training, lol.Β I actually like the runs up until about 12 miles or so.Β The longer runs I have done past 12 miles are tough.Β My legs feel like lead pipes from that point forward.Β The weather makes a huge difference as well…this summer has been brutally hot in the midwest where I live and has made the training more challenging because of it.
What are your pre and post marathon eating plansβ¦.do they include Subway???
Answer:Β I tend to eat Subway a couple of days a week.Β The night before a long run (anything more than 12 miles or so) I tend to eat more carbs, like pasta and lots and lots of water to hydrate properly for the next day.Β I usually eat Subway after the runs when I have a chance…and I usually eat a footlong because I need the nutrition!
*cue musical interlude as I commence awkward segue with common thread ofΒ Subway’s Commit to Fit*
We’ve talked a lot up in herre about goal setting, goal achieving & the importance of (waitforit) goals.
What we’ve not yammered about as of late are the various & sundry ways we reward ourselves as we make our way to our bigbigultimategoal (living a healthy, vibrant life).
Im renown for my rewards.
Im the first to treat myself (hello new!book!on!Kindle!) for a job even semi-well done.
Over the top or not I find the promise of treats spurs me on to additional success.
Im all about chasing that new book carrot on on the end of the proverbial stick.
Today, thanks to Subway and their Commit to Fit program, I have a reward to bestow upon you & you can be entered to win for the lowlow cost of a comment below.
Are you like I am and ALWAYS sure to reward a goal nailed no matter how seemingly small?
Or do you, like so many of us women, barely acknowledge your small steps along the way & focus too much on cheering for/encouraging those around you?
As a reward (rimshot!) for sharing you’ll be entered to win A $50 gift card to Lululemon, an amazing Gaiam gym bag/yoga mat combo! & a Subway gift-card.
(and yeah. as a woman who has never SEEN an article of lululemon clothing let alone worn any Id have to say Subway ROCKS for sending this treat our way.)
Please to hit me up, with your reward of choice BIG or small, in the comments.
Winner announced 10.11.10
USA only
FTC: Rumor has it I, too, will receive said giftcard, green bag & yoga mat (!). Please to know Im scampering to the mailbox daily in anticipation of it.

-I’m not dinky enough to fit into lululemon clothing

Yep, I LOVE rewards. I have one I won last Christmas, a rock salt light, and every day I turn it on and grin and say “I EARNED that!”
Thanks Mizfit!

October 8, 2010 at 4:05 amNow that you mention it, I have NOT been rewarding myself lately! And in the past 10 weeks, I’ve lost 20+ pounds!

October 8, 2010 at 4:37 amLOVE IT!!! Lululemon items are to die for.. love them.. I received a pair of yoga capris as a gift from a friend.. my fav pair!!
but yes I believe it mini rewards.. and I use them as incentive to keep me going. I’m now using the incentive to get my s/o to ugh get moving.. he starts then loses motivation and I try not to nag but he asked for help π he has never done that before.. so we are on!! for myself I usually set the goal and a cute workout top or outfit that is a smaller size OR a fiery hot color to wear in my next race..

October 8, 2010 at 4:59 amI’ve been rewarding myself with clothes. Oh, a new weight achieved? Let’s get a cute dress.
I’ve also been rewarding myself with an upgraded sound system and better record player. It’s taken awhile, but I’m getting there.
The thing about rewards is that sometimes they become very materialistic, and since I’m definitely lacking in funds, I have become very thrifty at stalking Freecycle, Craigslist, and just overall sales.
What have I rewarded myself for? Being able to do a certain amount of push-ups. Bosu ball squatting 200 times. I’m going to set my goal at an 8 minute mile now. I need to get back into goal-setting. It’s been a tough few months transitioning into having school but I’m going to do it.

October 8, 2010 at 5:23 amVery cool, Miz. And good luck with your training, Jared.
Other than the very big reward I am giving myself for no other reason that I am old, I’ve never really used the rewards system. I try to treat myself well all the time – not in a “pampered and prissy” way because I’m not a toy poodle, but in a good self-care way. Everyday that I get to live life as a fit and healthy woman is reward in itself.

October 8, 2010 at 5:34 amI think, in most cases, good health is it’s own reward, so is the sense of health and accomplishment. That isn’t to say that I’m adverse to getting some goodies now and then. For the most part things like new clothes, new shoes, being able to DO something new and different are more consequences of reaching milestones, rather than rewards. I see having some sort of (what other people would call a) reward as just the natural consequence of doing something good.
That said, there are always big and little rewards, whether it’s getting an entire new wardrobe (imagine if I didn’t “reward” myself with new clothes as I lost 200 lbs… I couldn’t be seen in public!) or running that race (which would have been physically impossible before) or buying a new workout video (because working out to fresh activities keeps me on track), I don’t hold myself back because I’m off by a pound, didn’t run at the time I’d set for myself, or because I still have that extra inch around my hips.
Sure, I can’t go out and buy myself “treats” every day, but I do make a point of doing at least one thing for myself every day… and keep in mind that these “treats” are expressions of self love… and that I DESERVE to express my love to myself every day. So for me, these “treats” are maybe for the little things: not always associated with a goal (other than, hey! I made it through the day!). They may be as simple as having movie night, throwing something “special” together for dinner, or painting my toenails bright red. Last night, for instance, I declared it TACO NIGHT and let the girls cook.
So while I can’t always afford the “big rewards” (I know one blogger who is going on a fabulous vacation when she hits goal, something I could never afford) I’m always sure to express my pride and self love in some manner.
debby says
October 8, 2010 at 5:34 amI treat myself pretty good in general, so don’t think so often of treating myself for a goal. Maybe that would work for me–I’ll have to try it. Haven’t been meeting too many little goals lately. Am working on one big one though…

October 8, 2010 at 5:53 amI tend to give myself (and friends) little rewards presents! Reen says
October 8, 2010 at 6:03 amI do try to treat myself when reaching small and large goals. I bought myself a beautiful amethyst ring 2 months before reaching my Weight Watchers goal, then placed it in the jewelry box and did not wear it until I reached that goal.
I also treat myself for small goals reached, sometimes with new music from iTunes, sometimes with something as small as a new roll of “hoop tape” for my hula hoops, sometimes with a new book, or something new to use at the gym, a new headband or new workout clothes, but it’s always something.
Goals are a big deal for me! In fact, trying to reach a mini goal now. Have two weeks left, but struggling. Think I need to think of a reward for when I reach that goal.

October 8, 2010 at 6:16 amIt depends on the goal, I guess. If I’ve finished a work deadline without procrastinating, I might have a treat (like 5 hershey kisses) or a weight loss goal might be a new pair of jeans. And if I get a certain credential (that will add letters after my name) I might just reward that with a trip to the bahamas!

October 8, 2010 at 7:13 amI’d originally planned on specific goals and their corresponding rewards … every 10 pounds. But they were costing money that we just don’t have. Like the new book I was supposed to get 27 pounds ago, or new underpants 37 pounds ago (just got this last week because my drawers were dropping to the floor!). So, yes, I have rewards but can’t always follow through.

October 8, 2010 at 7:24 amGood morning!
I am a HUGE believer in rewarding myself along the way – it not only motivates me, I choose rewards that make me feel great about myself.
If money’s tight one month, I may opt for a home pedicure – it takes discipline to schedule time for yourself to sit and relax and wait for your polish to dry. I love this “beauty day”.
When money’s not as tight, I treat myself to new workout wear to motivate me even more – it’s so fun to have something cute to workout in.
Here’s my latest treat splurge – vintage lingerie, found at reasonable prices on Ebay. It’s so fun to OWN the body I work so hard to have and having the opportunity to flaunt a little or a lot is not only fun, it’s such a treat to know you’re wearing fancy pants under your sweats as you run errands.
It’s so simple to enjoy life’s little luxuries – the challenge is taking a moment to breath, figure out what makes YOU feel happy and fulfilled and then GO FOR IT!

October 8, 2010 at 8:32 amSadly, I rarely reward myself for reaching milestones – whether the little ones or the small ones. Maybe someday I’ll get to the point where I reward myself too.

October 8, 2010 at 8:54 amI didn’t reward myself very often along my weight-loss journey – I bought a ring for 50 lb.s lost and boots(!) for 100 lbs. lost, but boy oh boy am I needing the whole carrot-on-a-stick for doing these long runs! It gives me something to focus on while I’m running…instead of thinking how much further I have to go, I think about what I will give myself that afternoon (after I’ve had an ice bath and a nap, lol). It really helps, and I feel completely justified in enjoying my reward, be it a ginormous bowl of frozen yogurt, or a new shirt, or who knows what will come out of tomorrow’s nine mile run? New puppy? LOL NO.
BTW, lululemon’s clothes are GORGEOUS. I have been coveting a jacket since I tried it on last April, when I was at their store in the Woodlands. I would love to win this amazing prize!!!

October 8, 2010 at 10:34 amI have tried to teach my children to value their time, enerrgy and all efforts. It seems to be working because my oldest daughter sent me a text the other day asking why, after helping her to learn to value and reward herself, I do not take my own words to heart. As far as rewarding myself goes, it just depends. I often feel I don’t have the means to do rewards all the time, but I try to when I can. I’ve been exercising six days a week for about 8 weeks now, and that was a big deal for me considering most of the year I’d only been exercising like, 1-3 days a week (pathetic, I know). So far I’ve rewarded myself with a new Nike shirt that I really wanted, and I got a massage one week for all my hard work. I haven’t been able to do much else, but seeing my butt much higher than it used to be is enough of a reward for me right now!

October 8, 2010 at 3:42 pmI am planning on rewarding myself with a new haircut & color when I finally reach my goal..Also I am going to spend more time with my friends. I am a SAHM and tend to put everyone else first. So every little pound or 2 is an hour or 2 of mommy time! Great interview & giveaway!

October 8, 2010 at 4:19 pmCarving out time to workout and get fit is my reward. There seems to always be a nagging voice in my head that I could be using that workout time to do something for someone else. I’m learning to take time for myself, and oddly enough, taking care of myself does help me to take better care of those around me. Hmm, think I read that right here on your site. Thanks again for being here!

October 8, 2010 at 6:02 pmI enjoy running races, so for me the reward is crossing the finish line! Nothing compares to the satisfaction I feel the moment I’ve put forth all my effort into running my best race. Training for an event keeps me motivated to be consistent with my workouts.
That being said, I know it’s generally not recommended to bribe yourself with food, but I frequently indulge in some sort of ice cream treat after a race. π

October 8, 2010 at 6:15 pmWow, I drooled a bit on my keyboard over that prize. That’s pretty cool swag. I used to be bad about buying anything for myself ever…for any reason, lol. Just wanting to stretch our budget as far as possible. I am definitely getting better lately though. I still haven’t gotten my hair cut and colored since setting it as a reward for reaching 170…I’m stubborn like that.

October 8, 2010 at 7:24 pmWhen I was losing weight, I set up a bunch of rewards for when I reached certain milestones (25, 50,75, etc), but then when I actually reached those milestones the reward didn’t seem so important as the fact that I actually REACHED A GOAL.

October 8, 2010 at 7:47 pmMy four-year old AARP gym/tote bag is wearing out, so my choice is the Gaiam gym bag/yoga mat combo. One to take out, one to use at home, would be very good.

October 8, 2010 at 8:03 pmMiz, I don’t have the $$ to reward myself right now BUT I do reward myself by acknowledging a job well done or a goal accomplished or working friggin hard to do something new in the gym… but also, I reward myself each day by eating to live a healthy & fit life!

October 8, 2010 at 9:10 pmI love, love, LOVE rewards, Miz, but reading this post I’ve just realized that it’s been ages since I rewarded myself for even the big accomplishments. Thanks for reminding me, I’m off to think about how to bring this back into my life.

October 8, 2010 at 9:42 pmI usually set a goal with the motivation of knowing I feel guilty if I don’t complete it, but I think your idea of rewarding oneself is more effective. π

October 8, 2010 at 9:45 pmI don’t reward my goals, big or small, and am more motivated by feeling guilt if I don’t complete them. However, I think rewards for all goals is more effective. π

October 9, 2010 at 12:16 amI never really got the “reward yourself” thing. If I want something, planning for, budgeting and obtaining that thing is a goal in itself.
Usually my rewards were food-based when I did have them, but now that I eat more intuitively I’ve realized the idea of “earning” food is really unhealthy. I’m a human being and I get to eat when I’m hungry – I don’t have to earn it.
Of course, I have trouble goal-setting to begin with. I’m much better at just focusing on the big picture. If my big-picture goal is something I truly want, it’s usually easy for me to do the small steps. If I’m struggling beyond just breaking inertia, then maybe my big-picture goal isn’t truly right for me.

October 9, 2010 at 5:27 amWhile I do reward myself in little ways (new song for ipod, etc), I don’t know if that is more of “a given” and less motivational… I do know that the achievement of the goal usually overshadows the mini-rewards. Nothing can touch the euphoria after running a race!

October 9, 2010 at 9:55 ami’m all about the small rewards. they aren’t always things; scheduled downtime can also be rewarding, e.g., half an hour reading a book or listening to the radio.

October 9, 2010 at 12:36 pmI’m one of those who doesn’t really reward myself until I think about it. At some point, I realize I’ve made some accomplishments and hit a major goal and THEN I reward myself, but I do it big! Not necessarily expensive, but I’ll treat myself to something I’ve been wanting for a long time.
This doesn’t happen often, especially since I’ve been at goal weight for a year. I have a hard time finding goals to set now.

October 9, 2010 at 6:57 pmI do reward myself, too much I think. I need to write down specific rewards for specific goals because I seem to always have a reward! Pedicures, clothes, crafting stuff – now today I did a PR in a 5K race and my reward sadly enough was a hamburger. Yes, a hamburger. I don’t eat them anymore like I used to (5 days a week practically – love them!) now just once in a while. I know food rewards are bad for people with weight control problems! So that’s my awkward system I need to reevaluate.

October 9, 2010 at 7:21 pmI set up rewards for myself, but to date haven’t been able financially to follow through with the actual rewarding. So I just tell myself that being healthier and more fit is reward enough, whether it’s true or not. It is what it is.
Have never heard of lululemon either, but they seem like top quality apparel. Love Subway too.

October 9, 2010 at 9:23 pmI try to reward myself, but it is definitely a challenge to recognize the good things that I accomplish…it’s so much easier to focus on the ‘opportunities’. But my favorite reward is ‘me-time’. No work, no chores, no-one else to take care of…just time for me to do whatever I want: read, watch reality TV, run, yoga…just time for me.
I was in a Lululemon for the first time last week, and I saw some gorgeous clothes…unfortunately, my pocketbook was not quite feeling large enough to buy anything, so a gift card would be amazing.

October 10, 2010 at 5:31 amSoooo, with my summer of training behind me, i have to focus on new goals for the next few months. My goals are as follows:
-be in the gym 4 days a week.
-be able to touch my toes (improve my flexibility)
-reduce sugar intake (this one will be the hardest)
If I can stick to these goals I plan to treat myself to a massage, or possibly a lululemon jacket! of course, the mental achievement is award for my achievements alone, but a tangible thing is just a bonus.

October 10, 2010 at 6:00 amI always feel like a reward is me just explaining away over spending, then I feel guilty

October 10, 2010 at 9:15 ami don’t reward myself for good behaviour. Mostly, because I’m not sure what the rewards should be. A bowl of ice cream was my usual.
But (as usual) you’ve given me something to ponder. And pondering is something I am good at π
thanks Miz!

October 10, 2010 at 12:49 pmI’m laughing because of the “new book carrot” line! The last four weeks, I’ve been giving myself new ebooks as a reward for losing weight and exercising and boy it is working like nothing else has for achieving actual results. I guess I found the right trigger! And I created my own fad NOOK DIET! (Details on my blog, LOL!)
I used to plan rewards, but either my goals would be too lofty, or I’d just never bother to reward myself if I earned it and, needless to say, that didn’t work. Thinking smaller is working wonders though.
E-books are inexpensive enough and totally instant gratification with my Barnes & Noble NOOK, so it’s easy, it’s fun, and it’s creating space on my crowded shelves as I replace hardcovers with digital content. I’m being consistent and doing what I need to do to safely lose weight. I’m even happy about it, while I’m hungry and sometimes a bit headachey from the deficit. Who knew?
REWARDS ROCK!
Anyway, cool to hear from Jared… it’s always nice to see someone lose it and KEEP IT OFF! Not to mention go for new goals!

October 10, 2010 at 1:06 pmI agree with some other posters: financially, I don’t feel I deserve to treat myself. After all, I feel guilty for spending the money afterwards! Exercise is definitely a treat though!
On the other hand, I love material rewards on the rare occasion that I treat myself. I hope I’ll someday be able to show myself more love!

October 10, 2010 at 2:26 pmBeen a busy week – catching up on blogs now. My goals are very general in nature. I don’t set specific goals… probably should. And like many others my rewards are more likely to be a pat on the back and “moving on.” I always find something more important than what I “want” as a reward that we “need.” Great response from Jared. Very cool.

October 10, 2010 at 4:08 pmI use scare tactics instead of rewards. I sign up for a race and then I’m terrified that I won’t make the cut-off or I’ll totter in last (after those in the 75+ group).
