My lone olive purchase siting happily on the checkout scanner.
Ever since this Ready Set Eat post olives have been a topic of discussion.
Here (tell me again why you dont like olives, mama?)
There (you’re a role model.Β for craps goodness sake Carla eat the olive so she’ll keep eating the olives.)
And everywhere ( some Facebook discussions that had me in tears I laughed so hard.)
So I considered.Β I pondered.
Could it be time for me to suck it up, taste the small weird smelling, wrinkly food-stuff I associated only with old jars and pimentos?
I listed the pros (I’d be practicing what I preached about trying everything once, I’d get me some FAB health benefits, liking olivesΒ might indicate I liked martinis which would open a whole new world for me).
I listed the cons (I might throw up a little in my mouth, I’d lose that whole “LOOK AT ME! IM 42 & HAVE NEVER TASTED AN OLIVE!” thing I had going on.)
I headed to the grocery.
Judging by how they looked it seemed these were the ones you’d suggested.
oily. wrinkly. precisely what you’d told me to procure.
but I grew distracted by the ones which looked like something I loved already…
It was only later, in the Tornado-filmed snippet of video below (alert google reader peeps!), I realized Ive made a huge mistake.**
What did I do wrong (besides accidentally throwing the procured item on the floor prompting giggles from my 5Β year old camera woman)?
Was it the olive? The method of mouth-meeting? Or are olives really more nasty less tasty than people insist?
*PLEASE* to hit me up in the comments below.
Olive you forever if you do.
**I know the grammar is horribly off there—but I love me some GOB too much to mess with his quote.

August 1, 2011 at 4:02 amNope, you did it right.
Olives are nasty π Your video is hilarious.
Helen says
August 1, 2011 at 4:05 amI love olives…IN MARTINIS.
That’s your mistake.
Great facial expressions though.

August 1, 2011 at 4:25 amI adore olives!
You need to get a whole bunch and find your favorite.
The Tornado is too cute.

August 1, 2011 at 5:00 amYou got a kalamata olive?! I can’t stand those, but I love a good nicoise (a tiny green one) or those black wrinkly ones you passed up, or (shamefully) black olives from a can.
Devona says
August 1, 2011 at 5:01 amI have only ever had olives on pizza and that wasn’t until in my 30’s. Maybe I need to go buy one olive and see how it is alone. I do, however, love olive oil. Does that count?

August 1, 2011 at 5:01 amYour daughter has the cutest giggle! And ewwwww i dislike olives too! I think theyre a love it or hate it food!
Kimmie says
August 1, 2011 at 5:03 amI love this as I really like olives and didn’t realize I could say they were healthy foods π
Damn girl where did you get those muscles?!
Crabby McSlacker says
August 1, 2011 at 5:13 amI love olive oil but hate hate hate hate olives. But as with oysters, somehow I feel like as a grownup I should have learned to like ’em by now. Thanks for validating that a mature open minded person can still hate olives.
Perhaps we olive-haters need to come out of the closet and declare our true feelings: Olives are Icky! (Wait, did I just say something about being grown up?)
Faith says
August 1, 2011 at 5:19 amYou’re a food blogger/vlogger!!
Kim says
August 1, 2011 at 5:23 amI also hate, hate, hate olives!!! Nasty stuff. But, I think you should keep trying it so we can keep hearing the Tornado’s adorable giggle. π
Coco says
August 1, 2011 at 5:32 amOlives have a strong flavor and are definitely a required taste. Maybe trying one straight up was too much? I dice kalamata olives for taco salad — that way you get that salty, vinegary flavor without the full-on assault in your mouth. You know, I’m 43 and have never had a martini–maybe I need to try one!
Coco says
August 1, 2011 at 5:33 amOoops! Meant “acquired” taste. π
Lila says
August 1, 2011 at 5:34 amI lurked on the FB thread Carla and this post was better than Id even hoped π

August 1, 2011 at 5:35 amNext time try the smaller wrinkly kind!
Karen@WaistingTime says
August 1, 2011 at 5:55 amI was laughing out loud even before I heard Tornado giggling. I’ve been waiting to hear how this went. So… for me… I don’t like those more expensive, supposedly better olives that you buy that way. But I DO like the cheap kind that come in the can. So – I challenge you to buy a small can and try a nibble of a cheap black olive and see how that goes. AND – each can has plenty so if you “accidentally” drop one you can try another:)
Tessa says
August 1, 2011 at 5:58 amPersonally I love olives. I guess they are an aquired taste. Hated them as a child though a have seen a number of small children nom through an entire bowl in 5 minutes flat! Try the really big (4 times bigger than a normal olive) green non wrinkly variaty. They are firm and taste, green. Lacking a better word to describe them. They are the pinnacle of green π
My personal fave are the black firm (stone not removed because then they go soggy) spanish olives. LOVE! Less vinigary, more olive oily, slightly sweet.
Good luck π

August 1, 2011 at 6:13 amMy ENTIRE family…and I mean ENTIRE blood-line Loves, LOves, LOVES olives. My grandparents used to actually give cases of them to their children for Christmas, and those freaks actually enjoyed getting them as a gift!!
Me?? I gag even when I smell them. Black, green, purple, tye-dyed…they are all disgusting.

August 1, 2011 at 6:19 amSo really you wont ever try again?
You don’t drink martinis ever?
I thought I knew you! π

August 1, 2011 at 7:58 amnope nary a martini has pass through these lips either. Im a sugary drink woman. I know I know…

August 1, 2011 at 6:26 amIt’s so good to see so many olive haters out there, I thought I was the only one. But I have to confess, I have recently found a love for olives. I grew up being exposed to the nasty canned ones (which I still don’t like) but my boyfriend convinced me to try a garlic stuffed olive from the olive bar at the supermarket. Since I love garlic and love him I gave it a try and discovered I liked it. Since then I’ve tried several different olives and have liked them all, but I still can’t stand the little black ones that come on pizza or in salads.
Shelley B says
August 1, 2011 at 6:28 amI’m not a huge olive fan – I can take a few kalamatas (like what you tried) chopped up in a particular salad, but I usually don’t finish them. So really, you did good! π
Jill says
August 1, 2011 at 7:13 amI’m a cheap can olive girl myself. Black only. When I worked at a pizza place in college, my favorite was a small pizza with sliced black olives only. YUM!
Janet says
August 1, 2011 at 7:23 amI love my olives!
Kimberley says
August 1, 2011 at 7:37 amI only like kalamata (the one you tossed…lol!) and green olives. I didn’t like them until sometime in my 30s as far as I can recall.
RetroMimi says
August 1, 2011 at 7:40 amOh no! Ya shoulda ate the little shriveled black ones. They taste like candy! YUMMY. I also don’t love olives, but the oil-cured ones are sooooooo good. Go back an get some!! Trust me on this…
Miz says
August 1, 2011 at 7:57 amREALLY? the oily shriveled? hmmmm.

August 1, 2011 at 7:43 amI’m proud of you.
And slightly disturbed.
I’m going to adopt your “wait till I’m 42 to eat an olive plan” – that gives me 6 years….I will relish them.
Tornado giggles make my day!
Rachel says
August 1, 2011 at 7:56 amI used to completely detest olives, and then I discovered that I like a really high-quality green one or kalamata(what you tasted) but NEVER EVER the black ones (they taste like tar to me). We all have different tastes! π
Kerri O says
August 1, 2011 at 8:03 amYou have to get just the plain old black olives in the can, and it’s an absolute must that you put them on your fingers first…that’s how my boys have always done it, and they LOVE them π
Izzy says
August 1, 2011 at 8:05 amToo freaking funny, Miz.
I love how the Tornado laughed at you and wouldn’t try them.
ROCK ON Tornado.

August 1, 2011 at 8:08 amStart slow maybe? The kalamata hummus is lovely (Publix makes a store brand and others make it.) Or pair it with some feta? Or you may just not like them.
MizFit says
August 1, 2011 at 8:10 amI think that’s my problem Michelle. The mere word FETA makes my lips purse. That said, Ive never tried the feta π just eaten around it in salads…

August 1, 2011 at 8:13 amI have passed up free pizza because it was covered in olives. Ick. No, I can’t just pick them off. I can still taste where they were!
You’re more grown up than I am for trying π
Valerie says
August 1, 2011 at 8:13 amI adore olives…but only the green ones. π I would probably have thrown that one on the floor as well, lol.
But I will admit they’re a very distinctive taste, and not for everyone. Neither of my kids will touch them. The health benefits are interesting – I was not aware of those! π

August 1, 2011 at 8:15 amOMG…the video is HILARIOUS!!!!! (great giggles!) I’m a big olive fan, but my husband isn’t a fan. I say “try them” (and he DOES keep trying thinking one day he’ll miraculously like them) he sniffs it first, just like you did. Funny! On a non olive topic, your arms are amazing!!! Have a great Monday!! Thanks for starting my day out with a laugh!
Jeri says
August 1, 2011 at 8:28 amI kept waiting for you to make Fit Stella try the olive too.
Especially from the floor π
Jeri says
August 1, 2011 at 8:29 amThanks to Valerie’s comment I took a peek at the healthy benefits.

August 1, 2011 at 8:43 amAnd when I said “interesting”, by the way, I meant I’m excited as heck about them. π (I have inflammatory arthritis and am prematurely perimenopausal, so…yeah. I guess there’s a reason I crave olives!)

August 1, 2011 at 8:45 amLOL My preference is unripe (green) olives, which I slice into my salad, but I also like black olives. Maybe if you tried them cooked or stirred into something? Oh, and I have a totally unsophisticated palate–I buy jar/can olives and am happy with them. π

August 1, 2011 at 10:06 amLoL! Tornado’s giggle is worth watching the video alone! I love how you “accidently” dropped the olive. The thing is, between your dropping it and saying eeww I don’t think you actually took a bite! Kerri’s suggestion of the canned black olives that you stick on your fingers is the best. (The wrinkly black ones don’t taste like candy) I can’t believe you’ve never stuck olives on your fingers. π
Eva says
August 1, 2011 at 10:29 amLOL
Smallest bite ever MizFit.

August 1, 2011 at 10:34 amHahahah! I love it! Kalamata olives are probably the most “acquired taste” of all olives – I think you picked the worst one to lose your olive virginity too:) I love them but then I love all olives… that vid was classic!
Quix says
August 1, 2011 at 10:45 amLove the video. I actually love olives of all sorts, so I can’t relate (but I feel the same way about eggs – want to love them, but it’s just physically impossible for me to get them in my mouth without gagging).
KCLAnderson (Karen) says
August 1, 2011 at 11:30 amYah..olives are icky unless they are chopped up and put on pizza that has a crisp crust. That’s the only way I’ll eat them.
So guess what I never had until I was 42? A shot. Really. And then one day I decided it was time, and I did a shot of tequila. And that’s that. I’ve never felt the need to do another one. Is that how you feel about the olive?
Nikki says
August 1, 2011 at 12:10 pmHahaha. I can’t even see the video but this whole post had me laughing knowingly from the get go. I do NOT like olives. I continue trying them from time to time to make sure my tastes haven’t changed. It’s ew everytime unless they are so mixed in with other flavors that I can’t tell they are there.
You know what else falls in the same dislike category as olives? Beets. Yes, I try this sometimes too. You know what throws me off? White beets chopped in cubes so when they come on my salad I wonder what they are, try them, and am so shocked by the unexpected taste I do not like. π
Props for trying the olive!

August 1, 2011 at 1:30 pmCute video, it seems you can now agree with team olive-haters (and understand where we’re coming from). I’m willing to eat most foods, but olives are not for me.

August 1, 2011 at 6:36 pmFor me, Olives fall in the same category as any type of fish eggs. Nasty.
That being said, I do love olive oil for cooking.
Good on you for trying it.

August 1, 2011 at 7:30 pmI’ve never met an olive I didnt love, same goes for Dash. I love that we have the same taste, today he told me “Mommy I LOOOOOVE stinky cheese”. Ahhh…olives and stinky cheese, kid after my own heart.

August 2, 2011 at 4:20 amOlives are one of those things you love or hate.
Like pop-rocks.
Remember pop-rocks? π
JavaChick says
August 2, 2011 at 8:13 amI love them – everyone in my family does and we always had a jar of olives in the fridge to put on pizza (or eat straight from the jar). I remember when my brother was probably 3 or 4 we’d be slicing olives for pizza and he’d be stealing them off the cutting board. He called them pickles.
I love the brine-y kind, I also love pickles. If you don’t like the vinegary taste though, maybe try oil cured? Or try them chopped small in salad.
But if you don’t like them, that’s okay too – we’re all allowed our likes & dislikes (and believe me, I have a long list of dislikes).
katieRUNSthis says
August 2, 2011 at 9:15 amNo way, Carla! You hit the nail on the head…olives are gross. GROSS, I TELL YOU. Like you, I have tried and tried to love them…or at least tolerate them. I just can’t do it. The smell. The look. Everything turns me off about them.
I won’t eat them on a pizza and I won’t eat them from the glass of a delicious adult beverage. Give me pepperoni and a Jack and Diet Coke any day! Hurray!
I know that as I get older some foods will grow on me and some won’t. File olives under that “won’t” category.

August 2, 2011 at 11:29 amKalamata olives are strong and not a great one to taste first. I eat Lindsay black olives from a can. They are great. The kids put one olive on each finger and eat them one at a time. I bet the tornado would love that. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEBL6WGyy7U (Random video I googled)

August 2, 2011 at 2:50 pmIt’a an aquired taste…some taste stronger. I like the whole green ones stuffed with jalapenos or pickled in wine with garlis. And even then…only a few. August 5, 2011 at 11:57 amI only got into olives a year or two ago – I still find them quite intense on their own. I keep a jar of kalamata olives in the fridge. I like them on top of pizza, and I also have a recipe for white fish with a tomato sauce and olive topping which I like. I haven’t really tried all the different types properly though.
