I’m wearing my PARTY SHOES!
Stop and consider, again, how you will introduce your friends to each other.
Before I go out this New Years Eve I’m pausing and considering precisely how *I* want to be introduced.
In the most wonderful of ways, the words we choose to define others impact the way they view themselves.

December 29, 2014 at 4:23 amI remember distinctly my mom telling me it wasn’t proper to ask a person what they did for a living, instead ask what their interest and passions are. So, in that vein, I’ve never introduced anyone by “this is so-and-so” and he’s an attorney . . . instead, I like to use a random fact that relates to the conversation are a mutual interest that person shares with the other person

December 29, 2014 at 4:59 amThis is so hard for me, living where I live and doing what I do for work. Plus it forces me to own what I don’t do for work — am I good enough at that to claim it? Good thing we’re not going out this NYE!

December 29, 2014 at 7:55 amSince i’ll be working that evening, after a very early dinner with Sweetie, i’m not sure any introducing will be needed then. This is something i’ll keep in mind in the days to come, though.

December 29, 2014 at 8:17 amI like it! Often introduced as wife, friend, co worker but this New Year’s Eve it will be,” I am Haralee, I like cats.” We are going to a friends for dinner and it will be an early night, but I will be the cat lady. Why not!

December 29, 2014 at 12:41 pmI love thinking about the impression that I leave with others as our brand is what people say about you when you’re NOT in the room!

December 29, 2014 at 5:51 pmAh yes, other than the fatness thing, one of the reasons I didn’t want to go to my 30th school reunion was because of the ‘what I do for a living’ thing. I find I define myself more by my pre-seachange life… As if what I do now isn’t sufficiently worthy!

December 30, 2014 at 6:51 amHave a rough draft compiled about this very thing.
Person first…
This is ________, who happens to _______.
Drop the ER from your interests (writER, runnER, liftER, walkER, bloggER)- and be the “person who happens to write, run, walk, lift, etc.etc.)”
Being an ER is not WHO you ARE!
cherylann says
December 30, 2014 at 6:53 amBut I actually like being introduced as a teachER/educatOR…..
making a difference for almost 40 years.

December 31, 2014 at 1:38 pmHonestly, I rarely pay attention to introductions. Instead I always find myself looking directly into a person’s eyes as that usually tells me if I want to go on to converse or not. At parties I throw, where there are usually people from around the world, we usually spend time trying to say each other’s names correctly.
Happy New Year!
