Today is a day with ZERO obligations and to celebrate I’m (kangoo) jumping for joy.
OK so there really *is* work, but I’m totally getting that finished EARLY MORNING and late night so I can surprise the Child with a day spent LEAPING and with my undivided, not work-distracted ATTENTION.
And yes.
Mothering as I do, we will also spend time discussing *why* there’s no school today and if it’s a day we should celebrate.

October 12, 2015 at 6:11 amI’m working, but not because I’m taking a stand on the holiday. I used to take the day off by mistake when I assumed we had all Federal holidays off!

October 12, 2015 at 6:24 amWhen i taught history at a home school cooperative, i taught about Columbus in such a way that the conclusion of the class what that he may have been a great explorer and a “great” man in what he achieved for history, but he wasn’t a very good man.
So, Happy Anti-Columbus Day/Columbus Day/Discovery Day/Native Americans Day/Pan America Day/Two Worlds Day. Enjoy your discussion!

October 12, 2015 at 7:24 amI totally agree with all that was said above re: Columbus.
But I will admit – I miss having Columbus Day off to spend with my son. That was one of the benefits of teaching.
Oh and I would definitely injure myself if I tried to use those boots! I’d end up in urgent care.

October 12, 2015 at 9:14 amThank you for this reminder! In honor of the holiday that needs a bit of a tweak in who it honors, I will take the multicultural construction paper, crayons, and markers to school tomorrow to remind my little white New England school that not all children are peach and self portraits should reflect however my child sees herself.

Have you read the book, Lies My Teacher Told Me? The author dissects many teaching points that we were taught, yet are so untrue, e.g. the whole Columbus thing.
