Greetings and welcome to this week’s RANDOM roundup of links!
This first one is particularly interesting to me after my recent jaunt home for Passover and spending time with family.
It’s is kind of like a social networking site for family but, unlike the unorganized MizFit who can sometimes fail to ‘join yer linked in network’ or ‘meet you at xyz networking site’ (she’s sorry. she plans NOT to roll this way and then she does) family is *obligated* to respond, right?
With all the talk in my world lately—both online and not—-about insomnia this gadget looks quite alluring.
anyone ever seen it in person?
These next two are blogsIlove links.
ShamelesslySassy is always filled with post that leave me laughing and thinking. This one in particular. If you didnt see it already DEFINITELY do the madlib and pass her site along to your friends.
Iateapie is a site Ive only recently discovered. Billed as diet food reviews it has saved me a buncha money already passing on items I might have purchased.
definitely check it out.
LinkLastly, more omega 3 talk. I know we have beat that poor fatty acid to DEATH, but one last time. (The blogger, Rocco? A total character. Love him.)
Finally, this week’s FREEBIE is going out to five lucky commenters and is sponsored by none other than Propel water.
Lemmie back up a bit.
Remember in the beginning when I said there’d be a whole lotta do as I say not as I mightcould do up in herre?
and that Im *so* not one to be anyone’s role model?
(I just wanted to make sure we were all on the same proverbial page)
I suck at drinking water.
I said it.
And sans any fancy strike outs to boot.
We did discuss how there isnt a specific amount we should drink per day (and my DoctorCursh Mehmet even agrees that we can get some of our water from food based sources) but I have to admit that I drink a lot of of water in the form of Propel.
And, living where I do (in the land of heat and humidity practically year round), I often dribble a few drops into my Toddler Tornado’s sippy to entice her to keep hydrated.
Stopping by our domicile unannounced? You mightcould stumble upon a diaper clad girl & her mama chomping on homemade Propelsicles.

May 2, 2008 at 5:50 amI love my flaxseed. I also bought Chia yesterday for the first time. Should I use both Chia and Flaxseed?
So happy it is Friday!

May 2, 2008 at 5:53 amYou know, I have never tried Propel. Not for lack of want, but because I’m cheap and figure tap water’s free!
I’m really bad at the social networking sites, too. I have accounts on a couple and always forget to check them or update them. It’s a lot of work! I have, however, reconnected with some of my good friends from college who’s info I lost during my cross-country after college move.

Love to hear good news about omega 3’s, as I do try pretty hard to get a lot.

May 2, 2008 at 6:20 amIt’s Our Tree looks really cool! Although I have to admit the prospect of keeping up with “one more thing” seems a little overwhelming. Kinda sad that keeping in touch with my fam is overwhelming…
Anyhow, you know my feelings on Propel so feel free to skip me in this contest;)
Off to go re-evaluate my priorities…

May 2, 2008 at 6:30 amCan’t wait to check out the mad libs — but with 2 screaming kids upstairs now may not be the time…. Any help I can get with drinking more water would definitely be a good thing. Gotta go referee the latest toddler incident!

May 2, 2008 at 6:50 amI’m trying to do better at drinking water. I’m starting the 6 week body makeover on Monday, and I’m supposed to drink 100 OUNCES a day. Gasp!

May 2, 2008 at 7:02 amPropelsicles – I love it!! It is getting HOT in Texas and my kids ride their bikes home from school, walk in the door and ask for a popsicle. I just bought Melon flavor (hadn’t seen that before) and now I will be pulling out my popsicle molds today.
Got my youbars (came really fast!) and they are good. They also sent me 3 of their popular ones. Love that you control what goes in them, but I don’t eat bars often and since they expire within 2 months I don’t know if I would buy them. I guess I’ll see how long this box lasts us. It was pretty handy just to grab a bar before heading out for my run though…

May 2, 2008 at 7:59 amI learned something today – I’ve never paid much attention to Propel because it has the Gatorade sympol on it I just assumed it was full of sugar. Now I see it isn’t…and has some vitamins. Perhaps I’ll give it a try next time I stop at the convenience store looking for something wet.

May 2, 2008 at 8:06 amThe Bag Lady is keeping her opinions to herself today.
Well, except that I agree with Crabby about that beating heart thing – the pillow looks really cute, but beating? That would drive me crazy rather than help me sleep. Can’t even stand to hear the Cowboy’s heart beating. (OMG, how true that is, somedays!) and definitely hate it when he breathes…..
Loudly, I mean….. Really.
Oh crap, I’ll just stop now.
Happy Friday.

May 2, 2008 at 8:11 amThere’s a heart egg molder!!! How exciting.
That self esteem passage is WAY too funny.
I’ve never tried the Propel stuff but am now very curious about it. I mostly drink my water in the form of green or white tea (yum!), which has the bonus of keeping me warm in this frigid frigid country.
Debra says
May 2, 2008 at 8:13 amI want to order that Heart Shaped Egg Molder on perpetualkid.com. That family tree maker site is cool but I’m afraid I just don’t have time/desire to sit and create an online family tree or do anything that requires spending too much spare time/home time at the computer. I’d rather be outside……….Happy Friday!

May 2, 2008 at 8:19 amconsidering I live in a state of constant dehydration, you’d think I’d jump at a flavored water but as a rule (brilliantly devised during my freshman year of college), I typically only drink things with calories if it’s skim milk or Dirty Martini.
PS that heartbeat pillow would be great for when someone gets a new puppy and it misses the heartbeat of its mommy!

May 2, 2008 at 8:49 amI love propel, but never thought to make popsicles! How smart is that! I drink tons of water, and now that the triple digits are approaching here in AZ, I will always have water near by.

May 2, 2008 at 8:57 amOoh, sounds good but the fake sugar gives me a wicked headache. I do love flavored sparkling water – yum! The kind w/out the fake sugar.
But then, I like Coke, too, just in case people were worried that I had high standards, or something.

May 2, 2008 at 9:18 amHere in Ann Arbor the Super Crunchies give you the hairy eyeball for buying water. I confess that I have an unnatural love for Dasani, but do feel a tremendous amount of guilt for using all those bottles, recyclable or no. And “eewww” to the chemicals in Propel; I’m good with a spritz of lemon or some super weak tea in my water, and a decent multi-vitamin. With gas costing what it does, water and coffee come from chez moi these days!
As far as the omega, another important fact is that so many of us have our omegas out of balance and we need more of the omega-3, so beat away! Your Chia post got me motivated to order some and I will be force feeding it to the family. (go you!)

May 2, 2008 at 10:32 amSo…I was concerned that Prople may be one of those bad drinks that is really disguised as “healthy.”
This makes me feel better. I love it.
Do you have an opinion regarding Propel’s new “Invigorating Water”?

May 2, 2008 at 10:44 amThanks for the link! And I just recently started adding flax seed to my food. I’m not really sure about it yet.
The Bag Lady says
May 2, 2008 at 10:47 amOkay, I can’t control myself. The Bag Lady hesitates to say this, because she doesn’t want to sound like a *gasp* heretic, but WTF is wrong with tap water? Okay, maybe in big cities it is full of chemicals, and has all kinds of bad things in it…? But what do you think they make bottled water from? And then they add artificial sweeteners, which are POISON, people!!
The Bag Lady knows y’all are trying to eat clean, so why aren’t you trying to drink clean, too?
Bottled water – bad. Tap water – better. Plus, aren’t they still flouridating tap water? I know, I know, too MUCH flouride isn’t good for you, but the incidence of cavities in children has risen incredibly in the past few years, and the powers-that-be are attributing it to the fact that more people are giving their children bottled water without flouride in it! And are giving them sweetened drinks…
Done now. (Don’t be mad at me… I may be totally wrong…it happens…not often, but…)***hesitating to click the submit button..***

May 2, 2008 at 10:54 amBeing a runner in Hawaii, hydration is a *huge* issue for me, and I have had some scary calls. I have an arsenal of colorful water bottles that I have emblazoned with stickers, and carry them wherever I go. Most days I drink so much water that I feel like I’m floating. However, on the days when I’m super hydrated and the pee is clearer than a glacial spring, that’s when I feel my best. I agree–plain water is boring–but sadly I can’t afford to buy flavored waters (subliminal message: this is why I deserve the Propel!) I have tried Propel many times, and agree that it is delicious–a great way to reward yourself for drinking your water!

I agree that the beating heart pillow is creepy. It’s like relacing human contact with machines! Which I guess is meeting a need for people who don’t have a pet or partner to curl up with at night, but I think in reality people need more human contact.
I agree with the Bag Lady! I’m sure we’ve all heard that tap water is safer than bottled water – it’s a much more heavily regulated industry, with water getting tested several times a day at city plants but much more sporadically (I’ve heard monthly?) at bottled water facilities. If you really can’t stand the taste of tap water, it’s better to filter tap water with some sort of home filtration system. I think the bottled water stuff is a big ole marketing ploy. But at the same time, whatever we can do to get people to drink…:)
Lori says
May 2, 2008 at 12:36 pmBag Lady, I do agree with you about the bottled water/flavored water, but everything in moderation, right? My kids are the few that actually take a water bottle (filled from the fridge) to school and refill it out of the school fountain. Most kids take a plastic bottle and once it is gone, that is their water for the day. Not nearly enough. We drink a lot of water, and a propel or flavoring in our tap water every now and then is sure a nice refreshing change. I also feel much better sending my kids a propel in their lunch every now and then compared to the crap I see other kids drinking. But if you can drink just water I would stick with that!!

mizfit, do you know how long flax seed is “good” for? I bought a box ….and didn’t read that it is supposed to be in the fridge. It’s been in the cabinet. how do I know when it’s gone bad?
any thoughts on almond meal?
just throwing stuff out there! thanks!

May 2, 2008 at 1:04 pmAnn and Lori – thanks for the support! The Bag Lady thought she would be the lone voice, crying in the wilderness (which really isn’t that far from the truth…).
And yes, everything in moderation!! An occasional bottled/flavoured water isn’t going to hurt anyone, but don’t replace good old-fashioned water with flavoured/sweetened with aspartame/pop/beer/wine/martinis…oh, wait, let’s not get carried away!!

May 2, 2008 at 1:19 pmbad bad girl! how can you suck at drinking water? Do you have a drinking problem (ala the 70’s movie Airplane, the funniest part of the movie which I am much to young to have seen but own it because it’s hilarious, I hope you know what I’m talking about)? I am so thirsty ALL THE TIME it’s ridiculous, I actually got tested for diabetes because of it. But I just need lots of water!
Gena says
May 2, 2008 at 1:37 pmAmen, Bag Lady! Tap water all the way! Although I do use a filter.
Okay, I didn’t know Propel used artificial sweeteners. Obviously I do not pay tons of attention to things. Now I say, nevermind! I don’t eat/drink artificial sweeteners as a rule, because they are synthetically created molecules which can only be bad for you in the long run. That and they’re addictive and train your body to not understand when you take in calories from things sweetened with real sugar.
Priscilla says
May 2, 2008 at 1:46 pmWe swill way too much water out o the bottle in our hizzy. Is there a particular filter one recommends? Pur? Britta?
I’ll still be drinking my sparkling water (w/out sugar – fake or real) out of the bottle, tho!
MizFit says
May 2, 2008 at 1:51 pmThumbtyped short version of the almond meal?
Simply ground almonds.
MizFit rocked the almond meal a LOT when she rolled low carb (many recipes if you want em!) and off hand recalls that there were always a lot of eggs in the concoctions/quick breads—–perhaps because the meal isn’t flour-y?
You can make it yourself (food processor) but process too long & it’s like almond buttah.

May 2, 2008 at 2:35 pmOk Bag Lady, now you are getting carried away because I am going to be heading out for a nice frozen margarita to beat this heat before too long! And after a nice long run today I’m sure I could use even more water but it is not nearly as appealing on this Fri. afternoon. 🙂 Have a great weekend everyone!

May 3, 2008 at 7:59 amAs a woman who has a ton of weight to lose – okay, maybe just 140 lbs – I’ve tried drinking my weight in ounces of water as some folks recommend. All I have to say is “Thank you! A million times, thank you, Gatorade for coming up with something that is vaguely healthy and hydrating.” I’ve reached the point of thinking I’m gonna gag if I even have to look at water. Mentally, I really think I’m getting something if it’s got some flavor and a little kick. That helps me stay in the game.
(BTW – I’m a newbie, and you guys crack me up! Thanks for the links; I printed coupons this morning. And I’ve started adding ground flax seed to stuff, too. This lurking is paying off!)

May 3, 2008 at 8:36 amI cannot drink “normal” water.
I have been drinking Propel since…nobody even knew what it was. Literally.
My brother is a marathon runner. He has ran (run?) every day for more than 10 consecutive years. I don’t get, because I’d rather have a root canal than run a block so it’s obviously not DNA. Anyway, I went to Spokane to visit him when he was there to run the annual Bloomsday marathon and when he finished the run, he was given a bottle of Propel. Everyone with us said, “what is this?” and I knew as I was already hooked on that beautiful blue bottle spinoff of gatorade, which, by the way, I CANNOT drink.
Erin says
May 4, 2008 at 10:55 pmI drink lots of normal water, but should probably start drinking propel or the new gatorade G2 stuff, cause I’m a cardio whore, and I’m not very good at taking in calories WHILE training.
Nita says
May 5, 2008 at 5:23 amI’ve never considered Propel because I assumed it was full of sugar. I learned something new today! I am a big water drinker though. I drink a good 1.5 to 2 gallons a day, then I usually treat myself to a crystal light slushie in the evening. Mmmm.
