Cram veggies galore
In my V-MixMachine!

We get fruits galore.
I want VEGGIE BASE

September 18, 2011 at 7:48 amWe started juicing about three weeks ago after seeing”Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead.” I’ve had some awesome attempts…and some disasters. SpaBettie.com is an amazing resource.
But in order to boost the volume without spending a ton of money, I highly recommend cucumbers, watermelon and oranges. Not only do you get a lot of juice out of them, it helps sweeten the bitter veggies. I use beets (but go easy, and peel the skin), ginger, carrots, kale, parsley, red and yellow peppers in almost every juice. I also really like apples in mine. I have tried mango and pineapple, but it does make it really sweet.
Kristina @ spabettie says
September 18, 2011 at 11:39 amthank you, Katy! π
I second all that Katy said here – and pineapple is a great addition when you are juicing greens that are more bitter (beet tops, etc) as it masks those. I get a whole pineapple and cut it into 6 strips – packaging them for future use – one sixth of a pineapple is plenty without being too sweet.
ginger is a great flavor too – very little is needed – and if you want to get adventurous, a peeled garlic clove is really good in veggie juices. I have one that tastes like pizza – bell peppers, tomatoes, garlic, kale, a few walnuts (this part in the vita).
most important, have fun and experiment! π

September 18, 2011 at 7:57 amlol….My son is anti veggie for some reason. I make lemonade out of spinach and lemon in mine. I can’t remember what lie I told him about why it was green (I think I told him it was cucumbers) but he drinks it. We have a Jack LaLanne juicer. Frequently I’m sad to say it sits on a shelf. First it ends up being expensive to use, secondly the cleaning is a pain in the arse. There are so many blogs and sites out there for recipes. My girlfriend has a VitaMix and I feel like that is what I should have got instead to make it more versatile. I just can’t cost justify spending the $400. Have fun!

September 18, 2011 at 8:02 amI’ve been juicing for a few weeks now (bought an Omega 8005) and love it. Please note that, for me, “juicing” doesn’t mean replacing meals with juice. It’s in addition to. I have found that you don’t need much fruit in order to make a mostly veggie juice taste sweet. There are also lots of recipes online but I prefer to experiment. Some juices look like mud as a result π Lately I’ve been trying to stick to one color. I’ve done purple (purple grapes, red cabbage, strawberries, plum, beets…okay, that one is more fruit) and green (apple, broccoli, spinach, green beans, ginger, parsley, romaine).
Other things I have juiced: peaches, oranges, grapefruits, pineapple, kale, celery, carrots, cilantro, lemons, limes, green beans, cucumbers, asparagus, watercress, mango
Things that are on my list to try: Swiss chard and other greens not listed above, radishes, sprouts, wheat grass, cranberries…and so on

September 18, 2011 at 8:09 amOne of the simplest juice (that’s liked by all) I make contains the following:
Greens (Romaine lettuce, kale, spinach, etc.)
one cucumber
two lemons (cuts through the “greenesss” of the greens)
two apples (adds sweetness)
The above makes a beautiful green juice.
I also like to add carrots but the color gets really ugly…
Another favorite juice is apple/carrot/ginger.
Have fun juicing!!!

September 18, 2011 at 11:27 amMake sure you use carrots or tomatoes as the base, and go easy on the stronger leaf veggies until you get used to it.
If you want a green smoothie, spinach, plus kale or mustard greens, plus celery, plus frozen bananas — my favorite! Sometimes i add mango or frozen berries, too.

September 18, 2011 at 11:28 amI LOVE that you wrote this from your phone, especially while standing in front of those misters! I am not a fan, you should see me shaking bunches of kale to get rid of water!
I have a “benefits of” post, and also a FAQ of fasting linked at the bottom.
http://spabettie.com/2011/08/01/the-benefits-of-fasting/
the FAQ was after we had done our own juice fast – we LOVED it!
all of my juice recipes can be found in my “daily juice” category π
we watched Fat Sick Nearly Dead after a week of fasting – it was awesome, and reinforced for us all that we were doing! I am doing a giveaway of the film + book this week.
last thing? YES, it CAN make you more strong! π

September 19, 2011 at 10:22 amThanks so much for posting this, Miz.
For those of you with a vitamax: what happens to the pulp? Does it get separated out, or end up in the juice? Lots of juicers separate it out, and I’m curious what the thinking on both strategies is.
Thanks!
Kristina @ spabettie says
September 19, 2011 at 12:53 pmhi Shelley!
vitamix and juicers do two completely different things – like you said, juicers will separate or extract the juice and the pulp (which you can use later in baking, cooking!), while vitamix makes more of a smoothie – everything is together – and gives you not only nutrients but fiber as well. if you really want juice and have no juicer, you could strain the vitamix results, using the mesh bags used to make nut milks, etc.
hope that helps!
