Who’s still in the need of some Post-Holiday Detoxification?
*raises hand*
Join me?
Im spending the next week focusing on small steps toward cleansing my body of residual latke sluggishness & mental slowness associated with too much trashtastic movie viewing.
Detox around here doesnt equal cleanse.
Ren Man & I are focusing on lessening (the processed junk, the proliferation of mindcandy) and increasing (energy levels, our ability to think clearly).
As I did with starting our early morning workout routine (small steps to big change) I’ve broken it all down into MizFitManageable chucks.
This way I hope I can stick with it for the full week I know we can all do this for at least for the next 7 days.
Starting small.
- Join me in identifying the junk in your life (from beer to Bravo. from donuts to the Duggars).
- Jot down with me the various ways you could replace the junkΒ in your day. (Or if you wanna start even smaller ADD IN the “good” to what youre already doing!)
- Commit to one ‘detox’ meal tomorrow (made and eaten at home? made at home & toted to work? regular meal simply sans dessert? it’s all what works for YOU.).
- Plan and commit to an entire detox day this week (wait. does this make us hardcore?! methinks it could!) & see/journal how it makes you feel.
Confused?
Muddled?
Please to give me 120 seconds of your time below:
This is definitely “cleanse-lite*” in that we arent consuming quirky shakes or nothing at all in the name of purification.
Which sparked my misfit curiosity:
Have you ever done a hardcore cleanse?Β Honestly.Truly. Am I missing out?
Are you willing to join me —-after you get there—- in one FULL ON detox day a week? No alcohol, processed foods or *gasp* caffeine?
Am I wrong in equating the word CLEANSE with, uh, spending lots of time in the bathroom?
*AKA what I know Im willing to do.Β Im 100% about setting myself up for success.

January 11, 2012 at 4:48 amI really like full-on detoxes because they allow me to feel cleaner and lighter.
You might want to try a fast after this, but it is a good start!

January 11, 2012 at 5:24 amLove this! I’m in. I’m not a fan of full-on detoxes. I like the small step approach. I think Dennis Quaid would too! π

January 11, 2012 at 12:40 pmagreed! i like to focus on nourishment and less processed meals. its the small steps that get us there. and i love the journaling part!

January 11, 2012 at 5:26 amI have thought a lot about your tweets and posts about the junk we put in our minds.
I need a detox from some of that, too.
Thank you for shifting my perspective. Would you reallu give up BRAVO?!

January 11, 2012 at 5:27 amYou know I’m all about the small steps. (If the bar is set too high, how will I ever get my leg over it?)
The only cleanse I’ve ever done was the prep for my colonoscopy. I did not find the experience refreshing or energizing.
So now I’m focusing on cleansing other toxic stuff, like clutter and social media. π

January 11, 2012 at 5:29 amI love your vlogs for all the wrong reasons LOL
I can not stop watching your biceps.
Do you credit your physique to clean eating, Carla?
I’ve watched your videos where you say you do not workout a lot just routinely!!
HELP LOL
Miz says
January 11, 2012 at 5:38 amOK Its early so Im not sure Im following exactly but here goes π
I do credit my physique entirely to cleaneatinglottsafoodcardioweights.
For me it’s a tripod. Good food (and plenty of it). Added muscle. Cardio.
If I remove one piece then AESTHETICALLY I dont look as good.
That said, it is (now as I age more than ever) a four-pronged approach for overall (internal which I guess shows on the external?) health.
Clean eating whole foods (as much as I can. I have a penchant for beef jerky as we all know)
Cardio (a little each day just MOVING)
Weights
Stretching/meditation.
does that answer it at all? π
Runner Girl says
January 11, 2012 at 5:49 amThank you!!
Do you drink?
Miz says
January 11, 2012 at 8:01 amI actually do not. I stopped when I was dating a guy who didnt—and just never remembered to start again π

January 11, 2012 at 5:43 amYES! I’m so with you (but I will never ditch Bravo….its cartoons for adults :)). What do I want to do? Commit to walking the dog at least twice a week. Since Kaylin’s come about..its been easy to get her out for walks, harder for Frank. He pulls and it makes it though for me to walk them both at the same time. She does well if I strap her into the baby carrier and take him on the leesh. Also would like to get my fruits and veggies intake back up. I used to be a fruit and veggie machine. I still eat a good amount of them, but nowhere near the amounts I used to!

January 11, 2012 at 8:02 amthank you so much for making the time to comment and share this. That’s precisely my mission. Accepting everyone where they are in this moment and encouraging/helping them to love themselves where they are *now* even if they do (as so many of us do) aspire to change. THANK YOU

January 11, 2012 at 6:53 amI’m in! I’ve never tried a cleanse, but I have done juice fasts back in college. They weren’t very fun for me, but some of my friends loved them and felt great afterwards. I’ve been making a conscious effort to eat and feed my family with better foods now that the holidays are over. I think a focus on *clean* eating is a great idea!

January 11, 2012 at 7:24 amI eat mostly unprocessed foods anyway so…. and I really am not into those detox.cleanse things since I eat pretty well so I am going to say GOOD LUCK to all that do this in the true sense of the word & I am going to go about on my way doing what I do each day… I actually did not really even indulge over the holidays so all is fine here. Looking forward to hearing others.. π
Nope – not giving up my coffee! π
LeeAnn says
January 11, 2012 at 7:35 amI made a New Year’s resolution to eat healthier, and to give up most of the processed junk my family has been eating. We’re not there yet, but the small steps are working. I can’t get rid of my coffee, though…maybe when the kids are older. π
I have never done a cleanse. Well, except for that time I had to do it as a prep for a procedure. I did feel somewhat lighter afterwards, but I don’t think I would do that voluntarily.
Tamara says
January 11, 2012 at 7:35 amNever cleansed, not even curious.
Am on day 10 of no sugar, so as far as detox goes, I’m on track.
I’m with Jody; coffee is a necessity!
As always, love your vlogs!

January 11, 2012 at 7:44 amThe full-on cleanse before surgery is horrid – as in nofunatall…. Small steps I can do. I’m sure I don’t need this much chocolate. I will not however be forgoing the coffee. Nope nope. Less tv trash would be stellar though.

January 11, 2012 at 9:09 amSmall steps? How am I ever going to get anywhere taking SMALL steps? I like to take big, l-o-n-g strides. Of course, it’s usually two steps forward, one step back. Or maybe one step forward two steps back. Or maybe one step forward, one step sideways, then one step back. Or maybe… hey, how’d you just pass me taking those small steps? No fair!

January 11, 2012 at 9:13 amSHOOT JACK. Now Im singing the song (whose name I cant think of right now…Ill cite old age for that one) by Paula Abdul:

Thanks for the small steps earworm π

January 11, 2012 at 9:30 amI was worried when I saw detox in your post title. But you relieved my fears with your explanations. I have a jump start and already started on Sunday!
I have never done a true cleanse before, but I also think of the bathroom when saying, reading, or hearing the word. Who would want that?

January 11, 2012 at 10:12 amwhile I don’t plan on some sort of ultimate fast clean sweep of my internal organs, I do plan to cut out more processed food and going to more whole/ organic/ free range. The stuff I’m reading about what’s in our food is frightening.

January 11, 2012 at 10:16 amI’m in for this and love the tiny steps idea.
I can commit to eating only things that can spoil for a whole week.
Karen@WaistingTime says
January 11, 2012 at 10:25 amWell, I don’t drink alcohol often or ingest caffeine (except for chocolate now and then) so those two are easy. The processed food… harder. I do like my convenience items:)
For me, detoxing typically comes from cutting out all the refined crap (flours and sugars) and often also most grains for a while. It helps eliminate cravings for me.
Nancy says
January 11, 2012 at 1:12 pmI really struggle with cravings and even when I eat fruit it makes me want more sugars.

January 11, 2012 at 12:29 pmThis is fantastic. Focusing on the small steps to a healthy detox. I love that you not only mention FOOD but you include other ‘clutter’ that can be detoxed out of our lives (Bravo/TV/distractions/etc). π
Bonnie says
January 11, 2012 at 1:00 pmI love this idea and post – all around! The small changes truly do add up and I’m not someone who can go 100% into a detox/cleanse (at least, to be honest, I’ve never really tried I suppose b/c I’m never had the urge too). I like this way of thinking, and also cleansing the mind. We fill it with such garbage. I’m working on memorizing a few Bible verses a month rather than watch mindless TV (a few shows will still be kept in the rotation) for my heart AND for exercising my mind and filling it with GOOD!
Thanks for the thoughts. I’m curious…have you ever done a workout video (besides what you can do in hotels and such?) that details a common type of workout for you? Because you certainly have to be more intentional to get arms like yours! π (Only asking because so many have commented on your arms; thought you wouldn’t mind me asking in this post too.) Thanks Carla! You continue to inspire me. π
Nancy says
January 11, 2012 at 1:11 pmI’m curious about what Bonnie asked about too.
Did you do a workout video?
Also what is your take on fasting in general?
Miz says
January 11, 2012 at 1:19 pmI love what you say about memorizing bible verses instead of watching trash tv.
Whatever we may choose to make our “bible verses” (that, yoga, meditation, journaling) a CENTERING substitution which nourishes us is perfect. I love that.
I have actually been approached recently about filming a workout video but IMO the world does not need another π especially with all the AMAZING youtube and other videos online.
I have a youtube channel:
http://www.youtube.com/user/chickenbus2006?feature=mhee
And know that lots of my muscle/definition/whatever you wanna call it does come from consistency (again. I know :)).
Ive lifted consistently for 17+ years…

January 11, 2012 at 1:16 pmThis struck a nerve with me.

It numbs me from all ends.
I need to think about this more.

January 11, 2012 at 2:54 pmI’m so in!! Just before reading your blog I juiced a bunch of fruits and veggies because I felt like I needed a detox from the holidays (somehow it was chanukah/xmas through post new years that did me in – I was doing fine until that first latke…). I like starting the day with a fresh fruit/veggie juice but could not subsist on that for days on end so I’m all about the detox but not so much the cleanse. Thanks for doing this (and for your blog!!).

January 11, 2012 at 7:16 pmMiz, Great idea, but I’m already adjusting my food in (yet another) attempt to lose weight… however I’d like to detox from technology once a week.
I draft blogs in the morning before work. I sit in front of a computer all day at work. I tweet and facebook on my iPhone on my commute to and from work (plus have sneaky checks for updates occasionally during the day). Then I blog read and write and pfaff about online after work, and usually a final check in before bed. Argh!
Obviously I can’t avoid the computer at work (alas!!! And avoiding work would be even better!), but perhaps one day on the weekend I can cut back – or only blog/write and not do anything else. Hmm… perhaps an afternoon off as a starting point. Will let you know how I go!
