Stonyfield Oikos Organic yogurt to be specific.
Now, if you’re anything like the Ren Man, you may be wondering what on earth is Greek yogurt?!
(is he really as living under a rock as I teased? have you not yet heard of the Greek ‘Gurt either?! please to chime in below.)
Here’s some info from the Stonyfield peeps:
Oikos Organic is the only nationally distributed organic Greek yogurt on the market today.
Called βyiaourtiβ in Greece, Greek yogurt is thicker than regular yogurt. Authentic Greek yogurt like Oikos Organic owes its lavish texture to a centuries-old straining process that removes the whey (liquid) from the yogurt.
For hundreds of years, Greeks have prized strained yogurt for its richness and creaminess. Before the time of mechanical refrigeration, Greeks also knew that yogurt stayed fresh longer with the liquid strained off. Today we know that straining makes Greek yogurt naturally richer in protein than regular yogurt, and lower in carbohydrates.
Oikos Organic Greek yogurt reflects that tradition as a tangy, incredibly lush yogurt with twice the calcium of the leading Greek yogurt.
Other benefits of 0% Fat Oikos Organic Greek yogurt:
* Itβs diet friendly with 120 calories or less, 0g fat and up to 15g of protein per 5.3 oz. serving.
* It includes five live and active cultures, including L. acidophilus, Bifidus and L. Casei.
* Itβs certified organic, made with milk from farms that donβt use toxic persistent chemicals and fertilizers, antibiotics or synthetic growth hormones.
* An excellent source of hunger-satisfying protein, Oikos Organic Greek yogurt has no artificial flavors, colors or sweeteners β no aspartame or sucralose, ever!
What does all this really mean?
*The yogurt comes in plain, vanilla, honey & blueberry.
*The yogurt is lovelythick feeling in the mouth & AMAZEfabulous plain & in smoothies (the extent of my usage. Im confident you have more ideas. Please to share below).
*The yogurt is something I use, I love, & I believe is good for me and my family.
(translation: you wouldnt wanna know what I’ve turned down by way of sponsorship opportunities. While it’s entirely tempting to sell out in order to afford to buy a plane ticket it’s just not the way I roll.)
*I shall be bumbling about Chicago this summer dressed as a container of Oikos Organic Greek yogurt & passing out coupons for Stonyfield Farm!
(ok.Β the costume is a joke—–but how funny would that have been!?)
Now you.
Have you tried this stuff yet?
If yes—how do you like it best?Β Gimmie a few ways I mightcould disguise it so the Ren Man knows not he’s eating the Greek ‘Gurt!
If you’ve not yet tried it–why not? Any reason?
Please to hit me up in the comments.
One lucky reader will win (waitforit) four free containers of the 5.3 ounce Oikos &Β two free containers of the 16 oz.
USA only (I know, I know).Β Winner announced Monday.

May 15, 2009 at 2:32 amI tried it once and didn’t really like it. But that was in the middle of a period where I was super burned out on yogurt in general, so I’d like to try it again – especially now that I know there’s flavors!

May 15, 2009 at 2:49 amI’ve had Greek yogurt before and really liked it. I’ve tried both Fage and Chobani. I’ve not seen the Oikos at any of the stores when I normally shop, but would love to try it. I’ve heard many good things about it from other bloggers. π

May 15, 2009 at 3:22 amI have heard about it, in Prevention magazine, but I keep forgetting to look for it. I need to make a list for shopping at the Vitamin Cottage. It’s just as close as any other supermarket, so I don’t have any excuse! And it’s payday, so that’s not a problem! Gonna get some. Would love to win some! π

May 15, 2009 at 3:50 amWay to go Miz!! That is awesome (wishes she would be there to see all going)!
Way to go Stonyfield, you COULD NOT have picked a better person to represent you there!(still thinking about you in a yogurt costume, makes me laugh at the thought!) Maybe you (Stonyfield) should give some SERIOUS thought to a costume for Miz! ( π )
I have tried it AND love it, just does not fit my ever tight budget all the time, so to WIN 6 containers would be right up my alley and we would LOVE up here in this house, that is for sure!!
I like it best with some fresh berries on it…needs nothing else.

I already adore this stuff.

May 15, 2009 at 4:13 amI LOVE greek yogurt and this sounds gooood!! I’m on vacation in France and they too have a thick greek-style yogurt which is quite tasty. The Europeans really know how to make a good yogurt π
The live cultures are REALLY good for one’s health: it aids digestion, helps ward off vaginal infections, can be good source of protein, makes you feel fuller longer, and has many other benefits for the stomach and body.
I’m excited to try this once I’m back in the states….it can be tough to find a good one in the US.
And congrats about BlogHer!!

May 15, 2009 at 4:14 amOne of our purchases from the market every week is a large family tub of a Tasmanian Greek Yogurt. We buy one with some passionfruit sauce on it. It is seriously one of my favorite things to eat. I usually have some muesli on the top!
Marianne says
May 15, 2009 at 4:14 amMan I love Greek Yogurt I use it in place of sour cream. I add herbs and spices to it to make a healthy dip/dressing. What I have not yet tried is to strain it further to make it act like a cream cheese (works with regular yogurt). Looks like y’all like the sweet stuff, but I like to stir in tomatoes and leftover vegetables. It is a bit pricey. Trader Joe carries a house brand that is good.
Is it breakfast time?

May 15, 2009 at 5:13 amHow great is it that Oikos is helping to send you to BlogHer! Yay!!
I love Greek yogurt. I have to admit thought that I always buy Fage because I can get it a lot cheaper at Costco.
I love it plain, with fruit, mixed with PB2 or peanut butter and chia seeds (my favorite!!) or pumpkin and spices. We always use it in place of sour cream (fajitas, fish tacos, dips). My husband doesn’t eat it as yogurt (but he never eats yogurt), but he likes it in place of sour cream or in any recipes I’ve used it in…
Crabby McSlacker says
May 15, 2009 at 5:19 amI love Fage but it’s hella expensive, so if Stoneyfield has a Greek thing going I’m definitely going to have to try it!

May 15, 2009 at 5:26 amOoh, so awesome!
I LOVE , love, love Greek yogurt. I tried the Oikos brand last week with a coupon and love it more than the Fage brand!
I prefer to buy mine plain so I can add whatever I want to it.
Favorite so far has been diced strawberries (make sure to smush a few), and lemon curd from Trader Joe’s. It is everything you want sweet, zingy, creamy. Yum.
Other ideas are topping with granola, or crushed nuts and mixing in either fresh fruit or no-sugar jam/jelly.

May 15, 2009 at 5:50 amI have not yet tried the Stonyfield counerpart of Greek Yogurt to Fage and Chobani. I prefer Fage over CHobani.
I like Stonyfield because I can get the “organic” variety. Yesterday, I picked up the low fat plain 32oz container of Stonyfield yogurt as I forgot to make my home made yogurt the day before (I make yogurt at home every day as it is a staple of South Indian diet).
I am surprised at the statement that straining makes yogurt richer in protein. Won’t we lose all the whey protein?
Have fun at Blogher. π
Alison says
May 15, 2009 at 5:51 amI love greek yogurt. It’s so thick and tasty. I find it easier to eat plain than regular yogurt – the sour taste doesn’t bother me as much for whatever reason. It’s also easy to mix with other things. I’ve tried the oikos honey flavor. It was pretty good although the honey flavor was strong. It tasted simple – just honey and yogurt.

Then one day my local market got the Oikos brand. I tried the plain, the honey, and the blueberry. OHMYGARSH were they fantastic. My husband says they’re the only kind that taste like “real” yogurt. The honey is a particular favorite.

May 15, 2009 at 6:10 amMy version of greek yogurt is to take Astro balkan style yogurt and strain it. It comes out so thick you can use it as yogurt or cream cheese or whatever you want. The great thing is it can be sweet or savory π

May 15, 2009 at 6:21 amMizFit – would you dress up as the Honey Yogurt, so you can do the beehive thing?
I’ve tried Fage & Trader Joes, and love to use the Chobani 10% when making curry. I mix either a little honey or maple syrup into plain Greek yogurt, and then toss in whatever is handy. This morning, that was strawberries and a handful of “kitchen sink” granola. (Made using all the almost-out baggies of nuts and dried fruit in the pantry.)

May 15, 2009 at 6:27 amIt is a battle at the local stores to get. The stuff is so good that as soon as it is stocked, it is gone by the end of the day.

I still haven’t tried the greek yogurt, mostly because (although I’ve been aware of its existence for a while) I wasn’t sure exactly what made it greek. Now that I know that greek=all sorts of goodness, I feel an immediate need to try this stuff out!
And I do wish you’d dress in costume. Any costume would make me smile, really. π

May 15, 2009 at 8:06 amI absolutely adore greek yogurt! Actually, greek yogurt is what helped get me to the point where I didn’t need flavored yogurts anymore.
My favorite way to eat mine is to slice fresh fruit (usually plums or strawberries), top it with plain greek yogurt, and then sprinkling it with a low sugar variety of organic granola. YUMMY! It’s one of the most filling snacks I’ve had.

May 15, 2009 at 8:12 amI try to take the cheap way out at all times and buy regular yogurt and usually strain it myself making a “fake” Greek yogurt. May 15, 2009 at 9:08 amI loves me the Greek yogurt so hardcore it’s inappropriate. Stonyfield sent me some Oikos coupons a while back and I’ve tried the honey flavor so far – OUT OF CONTROL good. Hello honey volcano! If Ren Man doesn’t like that, maybe he’d be willing to try it as a sour cream substitute? OR cook it into a curry dish or dal or some such ethnic goodness. One recipe idea I got from my dad, which Greek yogurt is ideal for, is a cucumber salad – you just slice cukes up (hot house are my fave) and dress em with the yogurt, plus dill, lemon juice and salt ‘n’ pepa. Holla at yo’ protein.

May 15, 2009 at 9:23 amI adore Oikos, for the flavor, the extra protein, and the organic-ness, for I do have several other greek yogurt options when shopping but really try to stick with organic for my dairy. May 15, 2009 at 9:34 amI tried the plain, because being healthy only works if you do it overboard. hah. The plain was not good, but I’d love to have the flavored stuff. Or use the plain in place of sour cream. I bet I could do that!

May 15, 2009 at 11:27 amI’ve always loved plain yogurt, but last year I discovered Greek-style yogurt, and now I have a serious habit. (I eat it nearly every weekday afternoon.) I buy whatever’s the least expensive of the natural options. Usually this means Chobani or Trader Joes’, but now & then I’ll splurge on Oikos or Fage. Flavored varieties have too much sugar, so I go plain and add my own stuff.
I usually put a serving of fruit and either ground flax seeds or a mix of ground flax seeds & wheat germ. Or sometimes, just a thin, small drizzle of honey. I usually keep my stash at work, but sometimes I bring it home and use it instead of sour cream. (Works great on a baked potato, with chives and lemon pepper!)
Oh, and here’s one of our favorite chicken dishes: saute onions, garlic, chunks of chicken, and fajita seasoning (or, if you don’t have that, chile powder and a dash of lemon and lime juices), until the onions are soft. Add a can of diced green chiles and a can of enchilada sauce, simmer 30 minutes. Remove from heat, mix in some plain Greek-style yogurt to taste. (Sometimes we pull out some of the hot sauce, blend in some cream cheese, and mix back into the rest.)

May 15, 2009 at 12:18 pmI am a huge Greek yogurt eater! I love the more protein, less carbs & sugar! I was eating Fage just because the Oikos was not available where I shop for it. I have tried it & loved it though. Unfortunately, it is too expensive for me & as much as I want to eat the Organic, I eat too much of it & just can’t afford it. I now eat the Trader Joes Greek yogurt which has even more protein & it is thick & creamy as well & tastes great.. although I sweeten my non-fat stuff up a bit with Splenda. It is too sour without a bit of sweetener for me… they all were, not just TJ’s. I shop at TJ’s all the time & did not even know they had Greek yogurt until Kristi at Summer Fitness mentioned it. The price is really good too which helps with my budget.

May 15, 2009 at 1:43 pmNo the yogurt costume is a must…I only want to win if you wear it π I am a recent convert to Greek yog (the first two, or maybe five times, i tried it, that tart flavor GROSSED me out! Maybe shtick it in a smoothie, woo protein and creaminess! I’ve also heard it’s good as a sour cream substitute, as in guacamole, on taco salad, OR in tuna instead of mayo!

May 15, 2009 at 2:38 pmI love greek style yogurt! I like adding mixed fruit to mine, sometimes low cal granola. I blend a lot too- so yogurt is a staple in this house. Congrats on them helping to get you to blogher!

May 15, 2009 at 6:56 pmI am completely in love with this yogurt- I have been eating stonyfield farm yogurt for about a year now and it is great! I lived in Spain a few months ago and all I ate as far as yogurt goes while there was Greek style…when I came back I missed it so I started eating this stuff!
I personally will eat it with almost anything, but a different take on yogurt is this- to the plain stuff, add things like chives and garlic (or garlic salt if you don’t want to cut it up!) to make an alternative sort of veggie (or chip) dip. Works every time.
Congratulations on the sponsorship! I live in Chicago and am on the waiting list for the conference!

May 15, 2009 at 7:31 pmI have heard about Greek Yogurt before, but I have never tried it. I really don’t have a reason why, but I would like to. Here’s to hoping I win – it would be a great way to see what the fuss about Greek Yogurt is all about.

May 15, 2009 at 7:36 pmOikos is my fav greek yogurt! you could use it for anything in place of sour cream, milk, regular yogurt, and even as “ice cream” i would freeze this stuff and it’s GREAT (and not to mention HEALTHY!).
i also use it as my dressing for salads and in sandwiches.

May 15, 2009 at 8:07 pmYES! I’ve seen this exact yogurt at my grocery store, but it’s way more expensive than the Yoplait. I plan to try it when my liquid fast is over (don’t enter me in the contest to win!). I wish I could go to Blogher to meet you and many others….will put that out in the universe in case a plane ticket wanders in my direction.

May 15, 2009 at 9:57 pmI have yet to try this so called greek yogurt – I wonder what I eat? Is it american yogurt? My deciding factor? Price. Sign me up to win Miz!

May 15, 2009 at 10:37 pmLove greek yogurt, though I’ve never had this brand. I eat Fage usually or whatever the one is they sell at Trader Joe’s. I love it because of it’s high protein content. You can add some agave syrup and berries and almonds…or I’ll mix it with tabasco and dip my turkey patty in it…or use it to make tuna salad…mix it with chocolate protein powder and pretend it’s pudding…make the kidlings smoothies with it…I go through quite a lot every week! Have fun at Blogher!

May 16, 2009 at 9:46 amI’m boring. I buy Stoneyfield plain and either throw it in the blender with strawberries for a smoothie or go savory and make tzatziki sauce. I love love love how thick and rich it is, when hubby tried it he jumped up and down because I had found “European style yogurt” not the “nasty watery vile American stuff they call yogurt”
I hope you have fun at BlogHer!

May 16, 2009 at 11:46 amMy sister eats it all the time. It supposed to be healthier and does contain less sugar. Check out the sugar on a regular Dannon’s yogurt- pretty scary.
Not so sure about the taste on Greek yogurt though. Had it once and it tasted kind of blah. Hoping I can come around to it.

May 16, 2009 at 8:18 pmI’ve tried it, LOVE IT and danged if during their production stumble the one place in town that carried it in large tubs (the dread Wal-Mart) has dropped it. And I can’t seem to convince them to carry it again.
Safeway has it now, but only in the tiny containers for about $2 each! I’m trying to convince them to stock the larger tubs, but no luck so far.
I think my solution is going to be to buy this yogurt cheese strainer gizmo I found on Amazon and try to make my own thicker yogurt.

May 16, 2009 at 8:57 pmI use greek yogurt in place of sour cream. I use it in a yummy eggplant quesadilla recipe. Mmmm.

May 17, 2009 at 8:02 amI love greek yogurt but I have the hardest time finding it in Northern Utah. I’m about to demand that my local grocery store start caring it because I can’t go much longer without it….and driving 60 miles (one way) to purchase it is ridiculous.

May 17, 2009 at 7:58 pmMiz, I CRACKED UP at the mental image of you dressed up like that. Hilarious. π
No yogurt for me, though; I’m allergic to dairy. (Which is REALLY sad, considering I could eat sour cream WITH A SPOON. Hm. That might explain the stomachaches I used to get! Ha!)

November 8, 2010 at 7:18 amThanks for that. I moved away from Greece when I was really young, and I really want to rediscover my heritage. I’ve been trying out a lot of random greek recipes, and the best I’ve found yet is this greek recipe – it totally remind me of my childhood. I dont remember much of it except for the spicy smells and tasty food on every street.
