Im not joking when I say, in reference to my videos, that Im the one shot wonder (& I try never to view them either).
This time, however, I made the mistake of watching the video and a GRAMMATICAL ERROR leaped out at me.
did you catch it?
(obviously my home is where the health is & the english major in me resideth elsewhere.)

December 8, 2008 at 2:58 amGreat Motto for the holidays. We could all tune into this throughout the year, and especially during the holiday seasons. I will be in Austin & Houston this holiday season (Yay!) Touch football, park training & long runs in the days to come without access to a gym 🙁 Not to mention chasing lots of kiddos around the house!
Rupal says
December 8, 2008 at 2:59 amBTW- that smiley should be after ‘no access to a gym’ 🙂

December 8, 2008 at 4:33 amGreat shirt! It fits “home is where the health is”!
When at home – I’ll be getting outside as much as I can – even in the cold (well, cold for Wisconsin – oh, wait, Wisconsin is ALWAYS cold!). Sledding yesterday with the kids. (this is the easy one, even in the cold – getting outside). More difficult – eating “right”. So, I’ll put that one out there too – and we’ll see how it goes. When at home – I’ll limit the sweets – choose fruit over cookies. Most of the time…
Natalia Burleson says
December 8, 2008 at 5:03 amThat is a great mantra! For me and my son, my goal will be getting outside more. He loves to explore and collect sticks and “build” stuff. I’m such a homebody, I have no problem staying inside all day. Not good for my son or me for that matter. So outdoors more, moving more! 🙂

December 8, 2008 at 5:28 amGreat idea Miz! Yet again I can’t actually see the facetime video, but the Home/Health motto comes through loud and clear. I’ve been trying to implement that myself, I even took my 4 yr old niece on a 2 hour walk last week… well, it wasn’t my idea to walk as far as the beach.. so I don’t know why she was complaining afterwards! 🙂 I suggested going for a walk this weekend and she shouted “NO LONG WALKS!!” at me! haha 🙂 Might bring her Mum (& a pushchair) next time! 🙂
Linda/Hughsmom says
December 8, 2008 at 5:51 amBeen working on making home healthier for quite some time. I workout here now, and I walk on the local bike trail until it converts to a snowmobile trail and doing so means taking my life in my own hands…Yikes!
Anywaaaays, will be hosting Christmas here again this year, so I can be sort of in charge of the food and treats put out.
I may make a few cookies, but just so my Hugh can “help” with frosting and decorating, as he is already planning about leaving cookies for Santa.
Make it a great day.

December 8, 2008 at 5:52 amI will need to rewatch as I missed your grammar error LOL but I did get your message and it CLICKED with me.
if I stay healthy when I am at home this holiday season I guess I really can indulge more when I fgo out.
if I am honest so many of my trip ups are not at parties but at home. when I am tired and just mindlessly eating.

December 8, 2008 at 5:54 amwhat if my home is where the party is?! 🙂
I really am trying to make this holiday season a healthier one.
mainly because I feel so down at the new year when it isn’t.

can’t hurt.

That kind of error I’m confident I make all the time 😉
Perhaps it’s an error which jumps out as me as I was raised by two people with shockingly impeccable grammar.
Meribeth says
December 8, 2008 at 6:28 amWell, I certainly missed the error. Then again, I am grammatically (sp) challenged, so it all sounds normal to me. Besides, it is the message that counts!
Marste says
December 8, 2008 at 6:38 amHmmm. I have to admit, it’s not the home that’s a problem for me during the holiday season; it’s everywhere else! LOL, unfortunately I spend most of my time away from home during the holidays, so that’s what trips me up (and often when I AM home, I’m entertaining, which is just as bad). I’ll have to think about ways to apply it to my outside life, I think. (Maybe the office? That’s a biggie for me this time of year.)
Oh!
” . . . instead of just plop down in front of the TV, which is both hard and alluring . . . ”
That’s my guess on the grammar (and TOTALLY something I would say myself)! 😉
(And because I really AM a 10-year-old-boy inside . . . That looks kind of dirty when I write it down! LOL!)

December 8, 2008 at 6:50 amGood morning, MizF. Before I ponder “Home is where the health is,” I want to tell you that I’ve had your “Food is fuel” mantra in my head for two weeks and without going into detail, I wanted to say thanks! It’s really helping me rethink some things (read: carbs).
My home will be a bastion of health this holiday with the exception of lefse which my parents and sibs are counting on me to make this year. So here’s my mantra for this endeavor: “I need to be needed; I love to be loved.” I figure if I keep telling myself this as I roll out 100 flats of lefse, I’ll stay sane 🙂
Again, thanks for the “Food is fuel” thang. I’m about to forrage for breakfast…
Oh, and it’s 14 degrees and snowing. Come on, don’t you miss the old home town? hehe

Sagan says
December 8, 2008 at 7:26 amI like that! It’s a cute mantra. One which I wholeheartedly adopt.
For me it means more than just the nutrition and fitness aspect, although those are big ones too. But the way I see it, “home is where the health is” also means that home is the place for my mental health and all as well.
I will be doing all my 100 reps challenge at home and trying to eat nutritiously at home (damn that cake I just made…), and also keep my state of mind healthy by WRITING, cooking, and playing.
(Exams are done and research papers are handed in- I’m now truly on holidays so I can spend all my time at play. Hurray!!!)
ttfn300 says
December 8, 2008 at 7:32 amanother great mantra!! I’ll keep that in mind. Our xmas will be very low-key, just the three of us (me and the rents), and I’ll be doing the kitchen as mom will be recovering. I’ll do my best to health-ify the treats, but stay active helping out around the house. If it’s not too cold (you know, for upstate ny… ahem, texas cold, yeah right!), I’ll try and get out for a run or five 🙂

The goal of family dinners? Totally in alignment…
Debra says
December 8, 2008 at 8:10 amLike Karyn, for me it is more difficult to be good at home than at parties and especially difficult during the work day when I am stressed. And party cocktails are more tempting than party food – I have a thing about eating food that sits out for long periods of time especially…not tempting.
Felice says
December 8, 2008 at 8:12 amExcellent advice. I’m trying to get involved in more active play (this morning it was indoor golf — eek!) w/my toddler. It keeps us all sane.
But, I tend to bake more around the holidays — for others and for my family. I might try cutting back on that because I’m a full fat holiday baker. If I bake fewer cookies, that means I’ll have fewer in the house and then we’ll eat fewer. Got it!
amy says
December 8, 2008 at 8:16 amHey Miz,
Yes, caught it … but … in a world where playing ‘gotcha’ is such a big part of the workday let’s reframe the message. YOUR home, YOUR kitchen is where we repeatedly turn to hear words of encouragement, advice and wisdom. So don’t sweat the grammar. We got your message and appreciate it.

December 8, 2008 at 8:17 amGood idea… we’re hosting this year so I know it is going to be difficult… but actually probably less difficult because I will be BUSY and hustling around making sure everyone else is indulging and I may not have time! Also, I am trying to re-focus for the next couple weeks (after a week long Thanksgiving) and then feel like I’m starting the new year out on track – not all sorts of plumped up.

Also, trying to go ice skating more.

December 8, 2008 at 8:55 amI definitely need to get outside more over the holidays. When it’s cold out, I just want to stay in with my blanket, space heater, and tea.
Another thing that always helps me throughout the holiday season is to eat healthy things at home before going to any kind of party or gathering. If I go famished, I will attack the bowl of mixed nuts, and then go back for more, and then go back to pick out all the almonds, and then go back to eat all the Brazil nuts nobody wanted…well, you get the picture.

December 8, 2008 at 8:56 amYea, its a difficult thing, especially cause there are SO MANY TEMPTATIONS. The problem is also the fact that if I politely try to decline the Hannukkah doughnut or the Christmas cookie people DO get offended!

December 8, 2008 at 8:58 amI didn’t catch the error. I am a better writer than speaker–both in flow and grammar. I think I must also be a better reader than watcher. I’m sure I would have caught it if I’d read it (another English major here and I used to proofread as part of my job).
I’m thinking about your “Home is where the health is” and wondering how healthy my chilly musty old house is. I’m also wondering if the Christmas wassail I make every weekend lately is healthy since it has so many fruit juices in it, or if the cup of sugar cancels out the fruitiness. Hmm. It is so very yummy, though.
Today I’m working on the health by taking sick 3-year old to pediatrician. I wish we had a jollier health task in store for us.

December 8, 2008 at 9:22 amI love this concept. In fact I am particularly fond of the emotional/spiritual-ish side to it. One of the things I have decided I NEED as an adult is peace in my home. I don’t mean it in terms of “peace and quiet” obviously, but I think if we can be emotionally healthy at home in terms of treating each other with kindness, respect, and love, we definitely bring it with us when we venture outwards. I never really thought of it in terms of healthy behaviors, but the more I reinforce being healthy in terms of eating/sleeping/etc at home, I do think I’ll cultivate more energy to reinforce these behaviors elsewhere. December is a tough month. Thanks for coming up with this simple statement. It’s going into my mental Survival Strategies!

December 8, 2008 at 9:33 amMeribeth – I think you have to have Scandinavian blood to truly appreciate lefse.
It’s sort of a flat bread made in various ways, some good, some not so good. It takes a delicate touch, because if you overwork it, you can use it to tile your roof or fix a leaky boat!
We serve it spread with butter, sugar and cinnamon between two pieces, and it is divine.

December 8, 2008 at 9:36 amGreat motto, Miz! I’ll be traveling to Dallas over the holidays, and spending lots of time celebrating with family. This always winds up meaning eating all day long and sitting around – either while doing nothing or while eating.
I’m going to do my best to keep active, playing with the niece and nephew, feeding the cows (yea!) and hiking around in the woods.
Also, I need to get in that mindset now, before the traveling starts!

December 8, 2008 at 9:36 amI love this. Have never thought of it this way- but I think it is totally doable for me. AND, I am home a lot, so that is good.
I guess when I do all that baking, I should stick it on my porch though- or in my car- or entrust a neighbor with it so it isn’t IN my home. Sadly, that is usually my downfall. I love me some holiday baking and diet fudge just doesn’t cut it 🙂 Great tips today.

December 8, 2008 at 9:53 amI think of home as the safe place. I have control there to buy what it healthy and not bring unhealthy choices in. Going to someone else’s home, means I could give up that control. Or I could bring something healthier to share with friends.
Totally ignored the grammar error, as lately I’ve been fascinated with looking at the things behind you. (oops, sorry).

December 8, 2008 at 9:53 amThe only way I’ll be able to survive the holidays (and the dark, cold, dreary winter, for that matter) is to stay active. Last year we had the most snow that we’ve had in at least a decade, so I was plenty busy shoveling. This year, we haven’t had snow since October- who knows?
However, I have decided to do a half-marathon in January, so hopefully that will keep me off the couch (at least a little bit).
As far as the food temptations, that’s definitely the hard part for me, so if I focus on what I can control (home), then maybe the other stuff (work, parties, family, etc) won’t do as much damage (I’m thinking the 80/20 rule here).

December 8, 2008 at 10:33 amI think it’s a great mantra. I actually try to do this not just on the holidays: we often eat out, we sometimes indulge, but I try to keep home free of junk/ processed foods, sweets and soda as much as possible.
During the holidays, I do allow myself to gain some weight – not sure how much but my pants ARE a little snug come January so I’m guessing a couple of pounds? But since I keep to my exercise routine, the extra weight melts away by itself once I’m back to eating normally.
Lori says
December 8, 2008 at 10:38 amHome is my safe haven. It is the one place where I can pretty much control what goes on, and what foods are around (except when DH bakes something!!).
For the holidays, I have decided on what treats I am going to allow myself, and those include cookies on Christmas eve, an eggnog latte and one other baked good during the month. Since I have these to look forward to, it makes me less likely to indulge in other things.
I also made a goal to get in an extra cardio session 5 days a week for this month – and focusing on that as a healthy ‘me time’ for myself during a busy season.
I have also asked for help from DH to keep me on track. I LOVE that you are creating your support system, Lori.

I like the “The best thing for the bottom of a person, is the top of a horse.” Will Rodgers (probably)

December 8, 2008 at 2:36 pmMmmmmmmmmm…..lefse. I know how to make it, but lack one important thing – the giant griddle. My grandmother makes (made?) the best lefse, and as I’m currently an aspiring housewife (ha!) I have also learned to make it, just don’t get to practice.

December 8, 2008 at 4:27 pm“GRAMMATICAL ERROR” You’ve read my blog and know that “grammatical” is not in my dictionary =). “…our lives is anyways…” Ok, that was an easy one.
Every time I re-read my post, I find many…many errors and end up editing it. I just recently stopped re-reading them. =)

December 8, 2008 at 5:01 pmFor my holiday travels, Subway will be where the health is…unfortunately, (or fortunately, I’m not sure which) I’m young enough that I don’t have ANY time at home during the holidays. No kids, I didn’t even put up a tree this year, I have many years left to do those things. So, Subway and Jared, you better be ready for me!

December 8, 2008 at 5:27 pmI like that in theory, that being said I’m never home, so for me my purse and gym bag are where I can always find healthy snacks and meal ideas.

December 8, 2008 at 6:52 pmYeah, that’s right. Except scaled down. I work out 3x/week, cardio and full weight circuit, which takes about 2-3 hours depending on how much energy I have. It makes skipping a workout much more tempting because I will gain those 2-3 hours to use for something else, AND it means I’m not in a good habit. I’m all about the habit, so in order to make it an every day thing, I’m reducing my cardio to 20 min and only doing one muscle group each day. Hopefully the weight training will become more intuitive and I can go a little faster, so I can bump my cardio back up (I heart a good sweat). Was that a little bit more than you wanted to know, or a lot more than you wanted to know?

December 8, 2008 at 7:39 pmI don’t usually feel a lot of stress around the holidays, but this year there are some land mines lurking. For those (all outside my control), I’m just breathing deeply and trying to remain focused on the things I can control. So far, so good. I’m hoping it’s a trend. 🙂

December 8, 2008 at 9:04 pmHi Mizfit,
Thanks for visiting my humble blog. It’s such a honor. I just saw your video post and could agree with you more. If you eat clean and healthy for 90% of the time, splurging 10% on holidays is not a big deal. What you eat on a daily basis is what counts in the long run.

December 8, 2008 at 9:55 pmi can’t find the grammatical error! haha … oh well. i was not really paying attention to the grammar.
having not read the rest of the comments (yet), i think that that is a good motto to live by for the holidays. when there is so much stuff going on outside and we’re soaking in a culture of excess, it’s nice to be able to have a healthy home base type place.

December 9, 2008 at 12:06 amI like that! Although sometimes it’s more challenging than being at work, not only because it’s where more of the food is, but because the weekend schedule sometimes throws me off. That said, I think we try hard to make home the healthy place in all respects for our family.

December 9, 2008 at 12:26 amI hear you and Roni talk about setting a good example for your littles, and all I can think is…how selfless/admirable/AWESOME. Seriously.
On the one hand, I’m jealous that you have a reason to adopt healthy mentalities, but on the other hand, at Thanksgiving I couldn’t bring myself to eat more than a bite of any of the foods my aunt prepared, and my 10 year-old female cousin didn’t eat, either. Totally my fault. Totally selfish on my part to put my desired body type before the health of my cousin.
So, to you both, I say kudos. The rest of us? We’ll get there someday…

December 9, 2008 at 8:35 pmLOVE your shirt, your mantra, and your glitter skull!!! 🙂 As I have Celiac Disease (wheat, barley, oats, & rye are no no’s), my home is where I can safely prepare meals for myself. I totally feel like my home is my “safe haven”. That said, with the inevitable “Dysfunctional Family Holiday Drama” that always seems to occur in December, home will be where the wine is 🙂 PS – I rock out to Yo Gabba Gabba too!!

December 10, 2008 at 11:34 amI loved this… my only question is: What if home is also out? The boyfriend and I are packing up and will be staying with both sets of parents for a week each. Those homes are where I have the most problems…Any advice?

December 10, 2008 at 1:37 pmhmmmm. Check back to my thanksgiving post (just do a search for thanksgiving) as there were a buncha tips there and Ill do another survival post before christmas as well.
for me in that situation it’s all about doing the BEST that I can, being calm happy and focusing on the big picture and NOT letting the stress of the season make my husband and me turn on each other.
seriously.
