yes, for a small fee the Tornado will decorate yours as well.
Today, May 10, is National Womenâs Check-up Day.
Itâs the day to set aside all of our fears (âwhat if thereâs something wrong? Iâd rather not know!â âwhat if my doctor looks at me and thinks: Good G-d has she *gained* weight since last visit?â) and love ourselves enough to take care of the only body we have.
Itâs the day set aside for us to focus on SPEAKING UP and being heard.
Itâs the day to take the time and make a list of all the questions we wanna ask our health care practitioners so we donât forget anything in that hurryinandhurryout fifteen minutes we have their undivided attention.
Hell, print out this checklist for health if you want (I did), grab a hi-lighter & have at it!
Mark the things you have questions about.
Mark the tests you wanna ask about.
Mark the screenings youve been remiss in getting.
Use this interactive health screening tool if you dont know where to beginâ-JUST START.
(male readers? perhaps send an E-CARD to a woman you love. Nothing says “Im thinking about you” better than lovingly prodding the woman in your life to take care of herself because you want her to stick around.)
Todayâs the day.
Itâs like the day at the library when they forgive all the late fees. If youâre behind on your checkupsâmake today the day you call and schedule an appointment.
Sure it’s scary. Yes it can feel easier to just hide & avoid.
But youâre worth it.
And, if you can’t summon the mojo to do it for you, do it for the REST of us who adore you.
Got some excuses why you may ‘need’ to skip making that appointment today?
(You know I love me some refuting of the excuses)
What reasons have you used in the past to SKIP taking care of yourself whilst caring FOR other people in your life?
Please to (to call your doctor, make an appointment & then) hit us all up in the comments.
Edited to say: Want more MizFit on yer Monday? Here’s the link to my visit last week on Dr.Fitness & the Fat Guy. We’re talking juggling, donuts & shouting out to our fave fitness bloggers as well.

May 10, 2010 at 5:17 amI’m totally guilty of not going to the doctor to take care of myself. I haven’t been to the doctor for a checkup in almost 10yrs.
I’m afraid. I’m afraid to find out that I actually do have PCOS. Afraid that it will be real and I’ll have to honestly face the fact that I may not have the ability to bear children. Afraid that it may be something worse.
Not sure why I can’t get over this fear. It’s one of my major ones.
I need to get over it though. If not for me, then for the people who love me.

May 10, 2010 at 5:37 amI do fear being judged for my weight at the doctor. It has happened far too often but I need to suck it up LOL and do it for my girls.

May 10, 2010 at 5:42 amNot only will Mrs. NoMo be getting an ECARD I have also taken the time to leave her a love note on the whiteboard. Now that may not seem like a big deal but the whiteboard is THE form of communication in this household and nothing is erased from it until it has been completed. I expect an appointment for a checkup will be made today!

May 10, 2010 at 5:44 amGreat reminder, Miz. I am guilty of only going to the doc when I’m sick, I could stand to be a little proactive.

May 10, 2010 at 5:50 amGREAT reminder! I get a physical once a year (whether I like it or not) and go to the ladies doctor as well. Better safe than sorry! I like the check list. Hope you had a nice Mother’s day and have a great week!

May 10, 2010 at 6:02 amThis is every day for me. I’m one of those people who is constantly at the doctor’s. After I injured my knees, I’ve been taking no chance with any pains. If I’m hurting, I’m checking it out before it gets out of control. That, and I might be a borderline hypochondriac. Maybe.

May 10, 2010 at 6:04 amOh all RIGHT! Quit yer nagging already! đ
Seriously, it’s mammo time for me, and I keep forgetting to schedule. Thanks for the reminder!

May 10, 2010 at 6:06 amWhen I was overweight (I still am I guess but when I was more over weight ;)) I skipped my yearlys out of fear & embarrassment.
I regret that and all other ways it has taken me too long to care enough about myself to care for myself.
Great post.

May 10, 2010 at 6:09 amwhat a perfect followup to mother’s day!
Miz says
May 10, 2010 at 6:19 amoooh it is a good follow up to mothers day đ (they celebrate us and then we take care of us. We celebrate them then we nag em to care for themselves)
And I think we are all mothers. Before I had the tornado I know I played the mamarole to many. My canines. My auntiemamarole. My ‘surrogate’ mamarole to friends’ children.
But I digress (and have inexplicably ranted about mothers day ;))
I really am heading to doctor tomorrow—and this year as life is so hectic I really could have easily skipped/forgotten.
I’m doing it for the Tornado.

May 10, 2010 at 6:23 amMy checkup is every January, and I have tests scheduled to check a couple of things next month.
You are right to remind us about these things, for years I didn’t bother to see any doctor but the OB/GYN when I was pregnant, and I’m paying for it now.

May 10, 2010 at 6:31 amHow much to have you come with us and hold our hands??

May 10, 2010 at 6:50 amThat’s too funny; I actually have it written down in my agenda to book an appointment with my doctor! It’s so important to get checked out regularly, but I have a bad habit of “putting it off” or forgetting… nice checklist.

May 10, 2010 at 6:54 amHelp me Tornado!
Me, Miz, my excuse, this country fights real healthcare & it is too expensive for the self-employed person in the middle who gets no help. I hope in 3 years when Obama’s help hits adults, the other side has not repealed it….
We need healthcare for all.. affordable & prevntative healthcare. We need to stop the insurance companies from their craziness along with the special interst groups in DC.
OK, sorry for my tirade!

now the end of this year (or early next) I have to remember it’s time for the fun colonoscopy. I want to forget that one, but I won’t.

Thanks for the reminder! I took a great step towards being healthy yesterday. Actually, I took a bunch of them! I took my chunky butt on its first run! WOOT! I would be honored to have you stop by my blog and offer some advice and/or thoughts. đ

I have been putting off making my annual women’s doc appt. I am not even sure why I have been avoiding this appointment but I have and NOW, I have an appointment for tomorrow.

May 10, 2010 at 8:25 amI have to be honest and say I saw your post title and thought: boring post
And then I recalled how many years it has been since I went for a check up.

May 10, 2010 at 8:30 amI made a dentist appointment today!
I think women collectively are not selfish enough. You really have to put yourself first, and not just one day a year. If you do not put yourself first, no one else will do it for you.

May 10, 2010 at 8:36 amWIth all my healthy issues I’m constantly getting checked up but for those of you who don’t I can’t stress how important this is. Do it and just have that peace of mind.

May 10, 2010 at 9:57 amFor once, I can check everything off of my list – after the Go Red For Women day, I made my appointments and had everything checked out, blood included. Just had my mammo a week ago – I am good for another year! Good reminder, though – and proof that these bloggy prods do work, as that is why I am done already!
P.S. Running was GREAT yesterday – I’ve actually enjoyed my last few runs…weird, right?!?

May 10, 2010 at 10:08 amExcuses..FEAR…of uncleanliness…of superbugs…of the perscription pad…
Prevention (early) is key though…hmm…maybe it’s time!?
Healthcare: Many people who want it, don’t have it and people(me) who have it…don’t want it.(are scared of it)
Have a great day!

May 10, 2010 at 4:25 pmThis is the first year of my life I have been without health insurance. I’m a month overdue for my annual checkup and I _cannot_ afford it. I make about five hundred dollars a year too much to be eligible for Medicaid. I must get seen soon, because my thyroid prescription needs to be renewed in a few months and the tests have to get back before then. I had hoped to go next month, but I just sent flowers to the funeral of a friend’s son–he died on Mother’s Day!–so I have to put it off again.

May 10, 2010 at 4:37 pmDearest…it’s really the men who need to be reminded to take care of themselves (that I’ve witnessed.) They think they know it all, know more than doctors and put off doing any of the tests that come with aging. Instead of finding the real reason they can’t get it up, they take viagra and get with a younger woman (or man) until they can’t get it up again. Then they die alone.
Wow..what a bad ‘tude I have.
Happy after Mother’s day!!!

May 11, 2010 at 12:57 amHow funny – I had my first full physical since age 18 (I’m 25) today. I too was worried about the weight talk, but I planned out all my counterarguments in advance and was pleasantly surprised to get a doctor who didn’t lecture.
Also, I got my tetanus shot up to date. (And you should too!)
