For some reason today’s theme hath become grocery shopping and meal pre-planning.
The former? MizFit doesnt mind. The latter? MizFit doesnt do.
First: Tip Diva.
Have you ever seen this woman’s website?!
Sure, there are a few nuggets o’wisdom espoused there regarding healthy eating on a budget, but it’s more her entire site which amazes me.
Her tagline: Making Your Life Easier 10 Tips At A Time.
Totally true.
I love you enough to send you there knowing you might never, ever come back.
Fare thee well.
Speaking of healthy eating which compels us to pre-plan (oooh, not too bumpy a segue thankyouverymuch!) who knew that ‘found’ grocery lists were considered intriguing enough to have both a book and a website dedicated to them.
(And what does it say about me that I actually spent the time to go to the site and read more than a few papers rescued from the bottom of a shopping cart? who can say.)
my list? typically typed into my sidekick hurriedly as I try and drive with one hand sit in the garage.
Are you already the creating a weekly meal plan type to which I aspire?
I like to think I shall motivate to use the printable pdf here
It comes complete with space for a grocery list *and* a square for you to jot down precisely what you need to do the night before in order to properly prep for the ‘morrow’s meals.
Since the mere words prep for tomorrow strike terror into the MizFit’s heart, I think I shall stick with my Sidekick.
you?
Wanna spend some cash and save time? check out the more MizFit’s speed meal mixer.
I swear, when I make my first couple of million (as the trainer who hath finally whipped The Great & Might O into shape whilst flying to & fro LA as a paid consultant on Workout *and* the benjamins are pouring in from my award winning tween health & fitness book) Ill eat sushi daily, do all my shopping at Whole Foods & be all in for meal mixer (with a cook to prepare my meals to boot).
But enough about me.
This weeks freebie? Femme Metale.
The same fantastic site who generously donated a necklace for the tagline freebie has done it again.
This week, as with every week, MizFit is sorry she cant win.
You know the drill—-this could all be yours for the price of a comment below.
Have at it.

March 28, 2008 at 5:39 amI never pre-plan, except when I was on Jennt Crig. Perhaps I will make that my goal for next week and see how it goes. I shall report back next week………

March 28, 2008 at 5:55 amWow, that’s a lot of cool links! I usually don’t plan, but I realize that there’s quite a bit less spontaneous eating and buying when I do. I’m going to print this pdf!

March 28, 2008 at 6:01 amJust last night dh & I were talking about how we need to save money on groceries. I promised to come up with a meal plan for this next week (not that I ever stick to them, lol!) but thanks for the tip site – am loving it!
Also. Femmemetale? I’m in love. Serious love. I’m kind of a jewelry freak and really still a goth girl at heart – now I know where I’m pointing everyone for my birthday!!

March 28, 2008 at 7:21 amWow, that worksheet freaked me out a little bit. I mean, I am all about pre-planning…but this is Menu Nazi preplanning! š
(bows to the great and mighty…whomever it was that wrote that, I probably should have looked) I am NOT worthy. I would love to be that organized…and when I started this whole journey there were several months when I did it, spending most of a Saturday on it…but not any more.
Now I just make lists. Lots of lists. I love lists.
(wanders away, singing….”Me and My OCD”)

March 28, 2008 at 7:35 amSoooo. I just finished with my two favorite S & M trainers and realize this..If not for my clean eating (more so than Mr. and Ms. S & M) I would not have the Abs I do!
Another…how embarrassing! my 23 year old son makes a out a grocery list and NEVER buys beyond it. Why does he have the shopping list “DNA” and I don’t? I do have him beat in the coupon arena!
Femmemetale? You already know that I would love anything from the site. So suffice it to say, winner, beware…I will take it from you..
Have a good day all!

March 28, 2008 at 7:39 amOkay. I must admit that I actually have used a spreadsheet very much like the one on the unclutterer site. However, I’ve only used it when I had company in town and needed to look like I had my $#&% together. Normally, I’m not THAT organized. But, I’m also intrigued by the rest of that website. Tips on organizing EVERYTHING! I think I’m going to frequent that place. Thanks for leading me there.
The Bag Lady says
March 28, 2008 at 8:30 amHoly crap, the Bag Lady just wishes she could be that organized! She is a list-maker, though. She has to be, because her memory isn’t all it once was. She makes lists of things she needs to accomplish each day, and she makes lists of things she needs to remember to do in town when she goes.
She always makes a grocery list – she has a dry-erase board on her fridge where she writes things down as soon as she realizes she is running low. She does this because it’s a half-hour drive to town and when she only goes to town once a week (roughly), it pisses her off when she comes home without something!
She does not plan meals, though. Far too lazy for that! But she doesn’t get to order pizza or Chinese when she doesn’t have any clue what to make for supper, simply because no-one will deliver to the country! Good thing she’s not that bad a cook (now don’t go asking the Cowboy about that…!)
Randi says
March 28, 2008 at 8:59 amgrocery planning list – negative. I buy fruits and veggies and whatever I think we need, which rarely is the case and I’ve had so much celery in my crisper one time it was ridiculous. Oh plus, we’ll be out of eggs or something for weeks because I don’t remember to buy them.
Meal planning – affirmative today! Last night I got some beef from the freezer, mixed it with the veggies and some broth and I’m slow cooking stew as we type! (though I did just realize that we were maybe supposed to go out for supper with friends so maybe my planning wasn’t so hot.)

March 28, 2008 at 9:25 amOnce upon a toddler-free time I planned our meals. I have even been known to (regularly!) prepare several meals on Sunday, freeze individual portions, reheat, add salad, and call it a meal. Now I keep chicken breasts, fish, and ground turkey, quinoa, whole-grain couscous, a variety of whole grain rices, and a variety of vegetables in the house. I literally throw together an assortment of the above while chasing the toddler.
. . . plus, I’m all about eating what I’m in the mood for. What if I’m not in the mood for what’s on the menu that day? (am I a meal dictator if my hubby and toddler have to at what I’m in the mood for? or is it only fair because I’m the one cooking?)
Before I rush off to run a few solo errands before my personal (and much beloved) tornado comes home from preschool (Priscilla? So is your toddler walking–are you regretting it yet? Because mine walked at 16 mos and I’ve wondered ever since why I was in such a hurry), I need to say:
Please gods of Friday Freebie luck, let me win some Femme Metale. I’ve been a very good little MizFit all week. Please!

March 28, 2008 at 9:25 amI’m back. š
Ok – the found grocery lists crack me up – just that someone finds them and posts them. Weird. So weird.
And the meal-planning? Oddly enough, my husband and I are two of the most UNORGANIZED people you can meet (opposites did not attract in our case – we are the male/female version of the same person in many ways). Anyway, despite this – I have SOMEHOW gotten in the habit of meal planning and grocery shopping for the week every monday. It does save time and money – and reduces the temptation to eat out – therefore – ensuring we usually have a pretty healthy dinner. It works for us. Disorganization still looms over us in most other areas – but this, we’re doing alright on. I look forward to reading more of the “tips” on the site. Thanks!!

March 28, 2008 at 9:35 amI like making lists. It makes me feel so accomplished to cross things off of it!
As for actual meal planning though… I’ll usually have a vague idea the day of, and sometimes the day before- but I’m not coordinated enough to plan a weeks worth of meals on a Sunday and that sort of thing. Me and my mum tried to do it for a month and it fell apart after the first couple weeks. Ah well! At least we tried, right?

March 28, 2008 at 9:50 amOnce I week I pick out about 3 of my many cookbooks. I browse for dinner menus, select 5, and bookmark the pages in the cookbook with post-it notes. I write out the necessary things for the menus, add in what is needed for breakfasts, lunches, and snacks. Then I check the pantry and fridge to see what we already have. Then, I go shopping. I do not deviate from the list.
The other 2 nights a week are reserved for going out or for frozen pizza.

March 28, 2008 at 11:18 amActually my own excel file is a little more intense. In a vegan household with a 16month old we are OCD about getting the necessary nutrients. We use a sheet everyday with columns for vitamins and minerals, cal/fat/pro, and serving sizes. Meal pre-planning is a must but we give ourselves the option to eat a wide variety of meals depending on prep time available.
Frozen veggies and fruits are the best!
The Bag Lady says
March 28, 2008 at 11:21 amOh, and Miz – forgot to tell you – you’re back on the chair properly! The Bag Lady even tried that exercise….and is pleased to report that, contrary to her fear, the chair did not shit out backwards, leaving her ass on the floor and both shoulders broken! But she only managed one. Wow. That is a great exercise. She’ll try it again as soon as she heals up….
Meribeth says
March 28, 2008 at 12:12 pmOnce again The Bag Lady is my hero! You are funny!
Gena, I am envious! Green with envy or is that from all the veggies I eat?
Question for Miz and all….When you are at your cleanest eating and smell scents from a restaurant, do you have wild cravings for bad food, or is it just me?

March 28, 2008 at 12:32 pmGena? your plane ticket to the mizfit’s city is in the mail. please to come and whip me into organizational shape.
mwecology? no words. kudos to you.
Thanks Bag Lady as my arms were KILLING me (which reminds me of that old joke comedians used to tell about flying in/arms tired—but I digress).
Now, are you going to prattle on about your INVENTION or must I?
forget that—I will š
M? I dont really get wild cravings…I mean I DO get cravings but I usually heed in that Im one hundred percent the kind of person where if I try to distract myself I end up eating EVERYTHING ELSE and **then** what I wanted anyway!
Welcome Betsy. we’re odd, loud, opinionated, very smart š and HAPPY to have you!

Gena says
March 28, 2008 at 1:35 pmWell, I must add this one bit. The grocery list is the *only* organized thing I do. Everything else I do is very much fly by the seat of my pants fashion.
Oh, and I can’t take the hubby grocery shopping with me. If he comes, it takes about twice as long and we wind up buying junk food. I shudder to think what the poor man would subsist on if he were a bachelor. His favorite lunch: frozen taquitos. My favorite lunch: leftovers from last night’s healthy dinner.
mwecology – I am in awe of your skills. That is all I can say. Well, and kudos to you for being so careful to get all the nutrients in your diet!

March 28, 2008 at 3:26 pmI rarely do a grocery list. My stepdaughter hates that I don’t preplan meals. She complains that we eat the same things all the time. I try not to have the same food twice a week. She complains if the food is similar. I love dal. She complains if I do lentils or split peas in the same week as dal.
We’re vegan. We have lots of cookbooks. I often look in them for ideas but I tend to make the same things every week anyway. I don’t want to bother with trying to find ingredients for a recipe. I rather make things that I know and sometimes use a recipe for a small amount of variety.

March 28, 2008 at 3:46 pmDon’t pick me!! I’m still catching s#^t at the Gym for the Yoga LAVENDER sachet(where even saying the word “sachet” alone may mean I have to give up my man card!) Lucky for me..I’m liberated š
Always an educational read, thanks!

March 28, 2008 at 4:25 pmAh, meal planning. I’ve been trying to succeed at meal planning for a few years not. I really requires discipline, hence, I have fallen off that darn wagon numerous times. I made a list of our favorite dinners, then I can go to that list and choose the meals for the upcoming week. Of course the supermarket list as to be created. It took away the ‘what should we have for dinner?” as we gaze into the fridge setting.

March 28, 2008 at 4:41 pmHere’s how dysfunctional our family is!
I do the grocery shopping (and I HAVE to have a list or I forget half of what we need). My husband does ALL of the cooking. But….he doesn’t help me make the grocery list. š So, I just buy things I think we need that I think will make a complete meal, and he takes my assortment and turns them into yummy things to eat.
It’s very wierd. š

March 30, 2008 at 11:11 pmI used to pre-plan all meals before kids arrived. Now, I use Grocery Game and Coupon Mom to find the best deals for me and cut my coupon cutting time down. I attempted writing dinners on my big calendar for this past week and we followed it–oh, 4 days of the week. I have some meals to carry over to this week!!! He, he.
Usually, I make on the fly.
