Whether you decided to join in the Woman Challenge or not—-TODAY is a very important day.
Today, May 11, is National Women’s Check-up Day.
It’s the day to set aside all of our irrational fears (“what if there’s something wrong? I’d rather not know!” “what if my doctor looks at me and thinks: Good G-d has she *gained* weight since last visit?”) and love ourselves enough to take care of the only body we have.
It’s the day set aside for us to focus on SPEAKING UP and being heard.
It’s the day to take the time and make a list of all the questions we wanna ask our health care practitioners so we don’t forget anything in that hurryinandhurryout fifteen minutes we have their undivided attention.
Hell, print out this checklist for health if you want (I did), grab a hi-lighter & have at it!
Mark the things you have questions about.
Mark the tests you wanna ask about.
Mark the screenings youve been remiss in getting.
Use this interactive health screening tool (send the link on to a woman you love perhaps?) if you dont know where to begin—-JUST START.
Today’s the day.
It’s like the day at the library when they forgive all the late fees.Ā If you’re behind on your checkups—make today the day you call and schedule an appointment.
You’re worth it.
(*cue lovely music* which acts as a perfect segue to:)
With the launch of the Woman Challenge & my announcement there’s no way in hell I’m logging my workouts in their activity tracker, I’ve received a number of comments/emails asking for specifics with regards to my current workout routine.
(if by routine you mean catch as catch can—–which I do.)
If you’ve inquired—-your answer is below.
(If you’re a longtimereader you may commence rolling your eyes, stomping your feet, & whining that you know all this already.)
httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tb50h7U7cQ
And, if you’ve tat’quired, a video is here.
The art is not yet colored (& a little TMI) so, if you choose to watch, perhaps brace your collective selves…
Monday MishMash Post complete.

May 11, 2009 at 2:27 amHeh, nice tattoos š
I’ve been looking at the shortest possible workout that can still have results lately, is this one which showed benefits from a strength routine as brief as 11 minutes 3xweekly – 3-6 reps, 9 exercises so it looks like they went in and did one circuit through a pretty standard setup. You could probably even do roughly the same in 5 exercises if you were in a real hurry that day.
Nice to know where the practical minimum for how much you need to train to see some benefit is, don’t you think?
‘Course, this is for strength training. For endurance training if your goal is to increase your mileage, you’ve gotta put in the miles. But if your goal is just to strengthen your cardiovascular system or to do some metabolic conditioning, the shortest possible workout is a set of Tabata intervals clocking in at 4 minutes.
I have no idea what relevance this has to anything, I just like knowing stuff š

May 11, 2009 at 3:28 amI have heard you talk about this before and still can buy into the fact that you don’t workout all day long š
I spend about 2 hours a day exercising & look half as good.
Any suggestions for how I can cut back?

Good reminder about preventative care… I’m a couple months overdue for dr/dentist/ and mammo and need to make some phone calls. Sigh.

May 11, 2009 at 5:00 amI’m a new reader so the routine stuff was interesting to me.
I know that I need a check up soon and have fallen into the trap of wanting to lost weight before I go to the doctor.
It sounds silly when I type it out and it makes sense in my head.
LOVE THE TATTOO I saw your tweet that you may lock the video and had to check it out.

May 11, 2009 at 5:38 amWow, that’s a LOT of outlining! How long did it take to get that done?
I could never get one done on the inner thigh like that; not from pain, but because of ticklishness!
Marianne says
May 11, 2009 at 6:04 amHey…I went to the doctor! She didn’t even give me “the look” since it’s been, oh…5 years. Did I really need the “what you need to think about as menopause is in your near to mid future” talk? Yeah, prolly.
I went right to the tat vid, as my knees are trashed so working out is not possible. However, learning that there are people who still show their thighs in the daylight makes me wonder what I can do and still keep knee replacement at bay….

May 11, 2009 at 7:00 amI love the tattoo.
I started logging my workouts, mainly because it’s nice seeing the feeback in the charts.
Also, I had a bad week last week (PMS and the ring drama), and didn’t get my workouts in. The reasons for missing the workouts were valid (meaning that I didn’t feel bad about skipping them the way I do when I’m “too tired”), but seeing that I hadn’t reached my goal was a definite push to re-evaluate the duration of my workouts, so that I could fit them in better.

May 11, 2009 at 8:19 amFirst off, that is an amazing piece of ink.
I would love to join this most important of challenges, however, I, like way too many Americans, do not have health care coverage. I recently spent almost $200 going to my yearly exam, and that was using a clinic. I am financially unable to see a doctor. So I’m saving that checklist, and writing a list of my own to accompany it, for the day I find myself insured. Because you know that as soon as I am able I’m making a whole slew of appointments!

May 11, 2009 at 8:25 amMeg, thank you for pointing that out.
Please know that, while it may have appeared that way in my post, Im NOT one to take my health care for granted and so believe we need to revamp the system.

Now that summer is around the corner, and always I really want to tone up my arms and tummy. What would you reccomend I do on a weekly bases to hit those core areas? Should I do weights everyday but a different muscle group? If so do you have a book or link that you would reccomend, I am a visuale learner:) THANKS!!!

May 11, 2009 at 1:23 pmHOLY COW, that is one amazing tattoo!!!! How did you survive that & color still to go!!! Amazing! Although being a crazed workout person, I know about living thru the pain!! HA! Looks great so far.. Happy 40th!
As for your workout, great! I wish I could do that workout. I have a stubborn bod & have my whole life… UGH! I have tried less time but for what I want for me, it looks like I need to do what I am doing for now. Maybe some day I will not want to be as muscular & cut & age may take that somewhat into its own hands at some point… but for now, I like the lean & muscle look & have tried various workouts & seems I need to do more than a lot of people even though I eat really well. YOU LOOK AWESOME!
I like the Women’s Challenge. Without going into this again as I tend to get a bit crazed about it, I wish the healthcare system was better for those in the “middle”. Hard to get checked if they do not make it affordable for the middle folks & especially the self employed.

May 15, 2009 at 8:17 amWomen’s Checkup Day – what a great idea!
I’m shocked at how many people “don’t want to know” about problems they’re having. I’m stunned at how many people refuse to talk or learn about menopause, when they’re at the threshold.
You only get one body, people. Know all you can and do all you can to take care of it.
