And yes, People.
That really was our Saturday morning.
It kicked off early with filming & neatly segued into the grown-up types squeezing in a workout while the Tornado wreaked her own brand of havoc around the play area.
Now you.
I know many of you have already done a playground workout or three—–any favorite exercises we failed to mention?
Any favorite exercises you wanna film yourself doing/demo for the Bumbling Band?
And I KNOW many of you are launching your first resistance training routine, assembling a full body workout, & weren’t sure where to begin.
Still have questions?Β Need additional clarification?
Please to hit us all up in the comments.
Thanks to Ren Man’s generosity three lucky winners will win TWO FREE PLAYLIST downloads (each) of their choosing from SonicTap.com
Sadly, USA only as SonicTap is still in USA beta-mode.
Winners announced tomorrow.

I took my girls to the park this weekend and played for the first time!
They ran off and did their own thing and I swung on the swings so hard I was actually sore yesterday.
I had forgotten how I loved to swing.

August 3, 2009 at 4:23 amDo you really have an exercise band in your bag all the time?

your family is beautiful! The Tornado is too cute trying to get daddy to look at her! That giggle and her “excuse me” made me smile this morning!
I am finally interested (and super excited to start) strength training!!! I got a kettlebell and will add a resistance band to my purse-what a great idea!
Have a great day!

August 3, 2009 at 4:48 amI really do have my dyna band with me all the time (exercise band as it is from target and not a “brand”).
Mainly for something to do with the Tornado when we’re stuck places (she isnt called the Tornado for nothing—girlfriend is active!) and we’ve used it for everything from a jumprope (for her) to a toy.
but YES
at the park I have been known to whip it out and drag other curious moms into the fray.
and JEN? there’s a post coming soon just for you.
yumyucky? id love ANY VIDEO!!

August 3, 2009 at 4:56 amSO much fun! I will need to remember these once I have a kiddo (either that or I will need to borrow someone elses kiddo haha ;). I love the tornado snaping the band and then laughing hysterically. That is just awesome π
Hope you guys had a nice weekend! I can’t wait to watch Entourage and Josh and I have been talking about renting the seasons of Weeds (I’ve heard its so good)

August 3, 2009 at 5:09 amI am one who emailed you about starting a resistance training program.
QUESTION:
I can do pushups, the pretend pullups, bicept curls, dips, the shoulder things and just some lunges and pretend squats and that’s enough??
How much of each?
thanks in advance!

August 3, 2009 at 5:24 amShe is so adorable! haha. I had a hard time focusing on Renman (then again, she was saying look at me!:). Strong little one, isn’t she? That’s awesome.
Anywho, thanks for the tips from both y’all. Don’t have a kiddo, but I think the important part for everyone is that you don’t need a gym…most of us have surfaces like that at home. Improvise!
Sean says
August 3, 2009 at 5:35 amCarla, you, Ren-man and the tornado are THE answer to the infamous rebuttal of ‘I don’t have time’.
You encapsulate the idea of incorporating exercise into you lifestyle.
A true pioneer… and a great family to boot!
Keep up the great work.

August 3, 2009 at 5:35 amThe Tornado is so funny and I love you’ve begun sharing her with us.
I spied a small climbing wall thing in the background PERFECT for calf raises!
And you can do tricep extensions with your exercise band as well.
Fun post.

August 3, 2009 at 6:02 amOkay, that has got to be the best way to start a week. That little Tornado giggle is precious!
Sadly, there are no playgrounds around my place and a lot of my stuff is all packed up but I definitely have an exercise band I can use for simple exercises.

August 3, 2009 at 6:03 amOh hey – Ren Man demos the pull-up progression! I’ve been searching for a vid of this one for a long time. Must bookmark.

August 3, 2009 at 6:05 amMy two cents:
You can do much of these when you’re waiting for a bus to come!
I’ve actually done push ups and dips and CORE as I wait….
Love the famiy vids.

August 3, 2009 at 7:02 amOkay… your daughter is the cutest and the funniest! I broke out laughing when she informs you and your husband in your video that she saw a puppy. And in your husband’s video, she is simply too funny trying to get his attention! It is so wonderful that she is such a bundle of happiness because not all kids are.
And can I say how much I want your body? It will never happen no matter how much I exercise because I don’t have the genetics for that. But you do have an amazing body!
Tami says
August 3, 2009 at 7:55 amI like the looks of that climbing wall as well!
And you know what? I think my park has one like it.
I am I USED TO BE the mom who just sat and read while her son played.
Thanks for the encouragement.

August 3, 2009 at 7:59 amthis was such a fun video to film as the other moms at the park (alas there were no other Ren Men there) were looking at our trio as if we were crazy.
Can we do what you two (three? hilarious!) showed above and see changes?
Get your arms??
I say yes…and no.
you can FOR SURE do what we demo and see changes.
Especially if you are new to resistance training.
Add it in.
Stick with it for 8 weeks.
and then you will need to MIX UP THE ROUTINE so your body doesnt plateau (check out the video page above).
Whats the NO piece then?
Food.
I know I say it all the time but abs (and arms and glutes) are all created in the kitchen.
You can work your ass off and perhaps still possess aforementioned arse if you dont clean up your eating.
treats in moderation.
IMO eat every few hours. minimeals.
and cardio. move. somehow. every day.

August 3, 2009 at 8:05 amCouldn’t hear the videos but enjoyed watching the demos- particularly the Toddler’s contribution! She has her mother’s arms π
Love the playground workout. I’ve always wondered how much of a workout swinging on swings is- it’s so much fun and sometimes I feel as though it really is some decent exercise. Do you know which muscles it works (if any)?
sarahbb says
August 3, 2009 at 8:29 amI really need to do this more often. I have a playground right down the street from my house and love to workout outside, but no child. I wonder how many people would call the police if I showed up and filmed myself doing (attempting) pull ups?

August 3, 2009 at 8:36 amI wanna see the puppy! She is so darn cute, I could listen to her giggle all day long!
I use the resistance tubes at my gym and have thought of getting one for some extra strengthening over the weekends – but I got confused (it happens a lot) when I went to Academy to buy one. What strength do you recommend? I’m all over the place at the gym – sometimes using a black one, sometimes a red one – it’s whatever Brad sets up for me for the particular exercise. But I want to do the basics like you demonstrated at home. Help?

August 3, 2009 at 8:42 amquick thoughts:
Sagan? judging by how flipping sore my CORE IS Id saw the swings are great for core, legs and heart muscles!
and Shelley? In no help. in that it seems everywhere I go the bands are different (red is HARD one place and black another)
my tip? just get a bunch and when you are picking one for your exercise use one where you can NOT finish your last set entire (if your sets are 12 reps each typically the last set should be HARD not PAINFUL around 10)

August 3, 2009 at 10:13 amThese are terrific videos! Thanks for sharing what must seem like the most basic of info with such enthusiasm.
Seems we might be getting to a place in this country where a fit woman and man doing basic resistance exercises will be commonplace and sitting in a park smoking or eating fast food while your child plays will be what looks out of place.
Love, love what you’re doing.

August 3, 2009 at 11:18 amOMG, that Tornado is so dang cute and that laugh!!! Made my day!!!!
Great basics for people. There is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much you can do at the playground! I hesitate to offer up some of the things I could add on since you already know them & this was just to provide some basics for your readers …. but just a couple that would be easier is the row for the back with the dyna band.. like little Tornado almost did. You can do it standing or seated but I know you would obviously point out to keep the core tight, proper form. I also do shoulder presses with the dyna band. Can also do step ups for the legs. One of my favs for the back is the wide or close grip pull up from the lower bar with your feet straight out on the ground. You had a video of that one quite a few months ago.
It is so great that you provide these for people with no access to the gym OR want to have fun with the children & get muscles at the same tim! π

Okay, so I’m another one who asked about a resistance routine -my question is how many sets/reps should a beginner do? I just did one set of 10 on each exercise – is that enough or should I do more/less? Enquiring minds want to know!
I love that Sonic Tap tshirt btw!! π

August 3, 2009 at 1:56 pmThanks for pointing me to your site. I love the video blogs. I know I have one of those bands kicking around the house. August 3, 2009 at 1:59 pmI deifnitely have to trade my book for a resistance band and get off my bum more at the park!! August 3, 2009 at 7:18 pmOh my gosh, is the Tornado some kind of adorable, or what? Love her laugh and her exuberant spirit!
Thanks, Miz and RenMan, for more demonstrations of what one can do to get some strength exercising in at the playground. You’ve inspired me to do more of this during my vacations and road trips, and I think it helped mitigate some of the “why-yes-it-IS-going-to-be-years-before-I-see-another-pizza-roll” food choices I (unapologetically!) made.
(Hmmm…why am I envisioning a video post of kettlebell-inspired workouts with carry-on bags? π )

August 3, 2009 at 10:30 pmYou crack me up:) I recently made the decision to focus on ashtanga yoga for my arm strength – after weight lifting for a year, I realized that I just don’t enjoy doing exercises that isolate muscles or muscle groups. Since I don’t enjoy, I don’t get much out of it, strength-improvement-wise. But after doing hardcore yoga for a month, I feel and look much stronger! Especially my shoulders and upper back. Weight lifting is not my cup of coffee;) Which is my long-winded way of saying, yoga is my resistance training and I would recommend it for those that are having trouble getting into weight lifting! (if you delete my comment, I’ll know that you’re an undercover employee for the International Society of Weight Lifters and Playground Exercisers!)

August 4, 2009 at 9:19 amQuick thoughts while I (belated) wade through the comments.
The TT is too cute for words.
You can use the dynabands at the playground for chest presses and back rows too. Which is what TT was demonstrating for us, wasn’t it?
Using a ball -basketball, soccer or playground ball – you can do chest passes -amazing how that works the arms/chest and throw down the ball to bounce it to someone. Holy cow-the back, core, arms!
