I shall spare you the dizclaimers (please to refer back to this post) & merely add this is only how I do it.
Not only am I not recommending you follow on my oft-salt-laden path: I wanna say loud & proud that I am a poster child for nothing.
Iโm a busy working-full time momwifedaughtersisterfriendblogger & just strive each day to do the best I can.
In all areas of my life.
Below is what I ate yesterday & itโs fairly illustrative of how I eat during the week in general (read: fast, on-the-go but as clean as possible given my lifestyle.)
4am: Up at the crackcrack of dawn to work.ย A cup of what ideally would be decaf but is, realistically, mostly regular with a smattering of decaf grounds thrown in to make me feel virtuous.
630a Force arse to climb on stationary bike (Im in the habit of doing my cardio on an empty stomach only because Im working like a maniac prior. Id not do this if I did cardio later in the day.).
meal 1:ย (7:03)
As previously established my mornings are hectic. Ive found that the best chance Im going to eat well is to make this meal a no-brainer.
Im boring on weekday mornings. Repetitive. Easy.
2 or 3 wedges of Laughing Cow cheese (hastily crammed in mouth whilst doing 11 other things. Good fast protein and fat.).
Spoonfuls of flax (inhaled as fast as I can while Tornado yells โI want that! I want that!โ).
1.5-2 cups of scrambled egg beaters/substitute (Why not real eggs? Sadly because Im known for being in a rush & Ren Man is obsessed with the fact I dont cook things enough.ย Eggs undercooked = salmonella.ย Substitute undercooked = finejustgross).
Oatmeal (1/2 cup? Im guesstimating) hastily made/left to sit on counter until lumpy & cold (perfect!) & I can eat it quickly.
2 morning star farms veggie patties (love.).
(water, vitamin, tums for calcium, extra vitamin C)
Thatโs pretty much how it plays out during the week.
Irish oatmeal with soy protein stirred in ifโperchanceโthe Tornado feels like allowing me to eat leisurely (read: not have to inhale piping hot mush & inevitably scald my esophagus).
Protein pancakes if she is truly in s-l-o-w m-o-t-i-o-n & I can get out pans & ingredients.
meal 2: (10ish) Can of tuna/chicken (the large family size kind with 5 servings. I know. Lecture me about the mercury in the comments.) & a couple of rice cakes eaten whilst chasing Tornado/coloring on floor. (Ideally? grilled salmon or organic chicken.)
meal 3: (noonish) Often out somewhere so this meal varies wildly from foods Ive brought for us (ie. grilled chicken/cold rice/raw veggie type thing) eaten in the parkย to yesterday where we went to a deli (I had the innards of a turkey sandwich (left the white bread), salad and fruit).
meal 4:(2ish) Beef jerky. 2 canisters of my addiction.
meal 5: (4ish) Some trail mix.
meal 6: (7p) chicken breast or turkey slices & raw veggies
meal 7 (husband worked late) Met-rx shake with him while he ate his dinner.
(BLAST of loud music to wake any readers we lost to slumber along the wayโฆ)
That was my yesterday and is pretty typical of my life right now.
(Thanks to the economy Ren Man is frequently working late so we tend not to eat at the same time.)
Some days the meal out might be a couple of chicken breasts (buns tossed to birds) slapped on a salad, the tuna might be replaced by poached-previously salmon & salad, or the trail mix might be replaced with fresh fruitโ but my weekdays are all fairly similar.
And similar NOT in a bad way as theyโre foods that I *love* & I never feel deprived.
That, in my mind, is the key and why I did this post. People often compliment my will power & I always respond I love what I eat!
If I felt I needed will power I wouldnt eat this way.
Through trial & error Iโd find a different healthy way I *enjoyed* & quickfastandinahurry switch to that.
If Im out & about, have food toted along of the uber-clean variety and find a less than clean snack-stuff catches my eye & is what Im hungry for—I eat that instead.
So there you have it.
At your request what a day in my life looks like.
Regretting the request yet?
More than you ever wanted to know about what I ate yesterday?
Wanna lecture me on why I never, ever should eat the albacore.
Long to give all of us (myself included!) some tips for how to eat better on the run?
Ill meet you below in the commentsโฆ
(my top 6 tips coming monday)

October 15, 2010 at 5:02 am“That is a lot of food.” Ugh. Why do people feel the need to judge how much food is good for another person?
You clearly know what works for you. What you like. Work it. I love that. I’m hoping one day I have it down as well as you. I’m working on it. ๐

Love that you posted your meals – I eat tuna straight out of the can too so no lectures from me on that one. have you ever tried sardines though? SO CHEAP, delicious, eat right outta the can, tons o protein and Omega-3’s and? no mercury:)

October 15, 2010 at 6:25 amI love the way you eat. Not surprising, we have similar styles…I start my day with protein and starchy carbs and end it with a healthy shake.

October 15, 2010 at 6:52 amOne of the keys for me on WW is that I don’t eat (or not eat) anything that I’m not willing to do for the rest of my life.
I hate cottage cheese – so I don’t eat it now.
I love Peanut Butter M&Ms – so I work them in.
I do realize that I eat a lot of the same things, but it’s easier for me. And, after almost 6 months and 50 pounds lost, I don’t feel deprived at all. I think that’s the key.

October 15, 2010 at 7:00 amI’m with Lynne. If I’m having a hard time with the whole will power thing, maybe I need to rethink my strategy. Thanks for this!

Nail on head? Eat what you ENJOY.
On my Tuesday Ten post you commented that you were taking my #10 as I was enjoying my new eating plan. You were correct. It seems to have made all the difference to how I even feel about food.

October 15, 2010 at 7:48 amNo lecture here – I love it – cuz it works for you. And? Get this…the one thing I focused on? 4am. I have plans to work out every morning at 4:30am and you saying you do it at 4am…welll…means I can too. Thank you for that.

October 15, 2010 at 8:07 amI really like that you love what you eat and don’t need willpower to stick to these foods. I’m finding that I love what I eat these days too, and it does help a lot. However, I still need willpower to keep from overeating, unfortunately.

Rita @ The Giggly Bits says
October 15, 2010 at 10:05 amIt can a long time to eat what you love, not judge it and not care what the guy next door thinks about it. It is game changer.
I must say, we eat remarkably similar if you replace all chicken with beans and jerky with sundried tomato (it’s pretty much vegetarian bacon)
The will power thing key. The best way to overcome a problem with willpower is to not need it. LOVE that. Eating is not meant to feel like a fight all the time.
Thank you for enlightening me that oatmeal comes in hot variety. I thought cold-lumpy-mushball was standard fair.(I may be currently eating day old steel cut oats at this very moment)

October 15, 2010 at 11:11 amFun post to read, I love your sense of humor!
Regarding tuna: yes, it is horrible because of the mercury. That said, I had it myself for lunch today. It’s quick and convenient.
Best tip for eating clean on the run: always have fruit and nuts available to grab at a moments notice. You can’t do much damage that way.

October 15, 2010 at 11:42 amI have lots of questions still (can I email you?) and am left with holy crap you get up early!
I love the way you write Miz.
Kate @ Walking in the Rain says
October 15, 2010 at 1:07 pmI didn’t have a chance to say yesterday, but I love your version of clean eat. I can get behind the idea of eating as clean as possible at that moment and not stressing that the food i’m eating isn’t as clean as it could be
I wasn’t bored with reading what you eat in the day. Mostly in awe of eating the tuna from the can and how easy and simple everything you eat is.

October 15, 2010 at 3:52 pmI like what I eat too…. so it does make it easier. Granted, I still would like to eat some of my “bad” fav things more often but I can live on my food plan & be fine, especially cause there is bread in it! ๐
I have a challenge for you: Try to slow down & stop and eat & enjoy every so often…. not while doing something.. Oh no, did I just give you a challenge that is hard for you! ๐
Lynda says
October 15, 2010 at 4:04 pmThanks for this post.
I’m left wondering if there were ever a time when you did need willpower?
Lynda says
October 15, 2010 at 4:06 pmOh and also if this is vastly different from how you ate before you were a mom?
As Jody suggests you slow down I wondered if you were this fast ๐ before the Tornado?
Thanks Miz.

October 15, 2010 at 4:38 pmI remember those crazy days of trying to eat around children…do you find yourself still speed-eating even when she’s not there? It took me a while to learn to slow down again! Interesting view into your food!
JanetM97 says
October 15, 2010 at 5:57 pmThanks for sharing your menu! I love reading about what other people eat. I always eat foods I like. Now on WW (again!) I just eat less of them and a bit more in the vegetable dept. ๐
Kate says
October 15, 2010 at 6:17 pmEver sneeze or snort while eating the flax seeds? Could be dangerous…
Can’t help myself here: you’ve gotta be a walking thermometer with all of that tuna! ๐ There are some brands I’ve come across that advertise low-mercury and their cans are BPA free. It’s pricey as heck, but hey, it’s your health, right? Oh, also, there’s a suppliment you can take that’s supposed to help flush out the mercury. I think it’s chlorella.

October 15, 2010 at 11:09 pmI actually found this post fascinating and it explains your lovely lean physique. Do you think your bodybuilding past influences your current style of eating? I noticed the mini-meals, oatmeal, tuna, eggs, grilled chicken, and less carbs in the evening.
I also enjoyed reading your definition of “clean” even though I didn’t comment. I relate very much to your approach although I will count calories from time to time if I’m trying to meet a certain goal.
Cynthia says
October 16, 2010 at 10:40 amAlways fun to see how another eats! I just can’t do the canned tuna thing though. Somewhere I picked up an aversion to the stuff plain. In recipes, OK, plain, no. My canned fish option is herring snacks… love my herring snacks, LOL!
Can’t stand Eggbeaters either… but I don’t like my scrambled eggs too runny, so it’s not a problem. And the garden worms like the eggshells. I swear, I saw them once surfaced because of rain and they were snacking out on my ground eggshells!

October 17, 2010 at 9:35 am“If I felt I needed will power I wouldnt eat this way.”
THANK YOU. Yes. That is so true. THAT is the key to eating healthy.
It’s not supposed to be HARD. Food is nourishment – and nourishment is a good thing. NATURAL. We need to figure out the right style of eating for each of us so that it’s not “work” but so that we also can nourish our bodies.
I love that you KNOW your body.

October 18, 2010 at 2:56 amBTW, just curious, you mentioned somewhere that you are sensitive to gluten and that it made you itchy. So you’re OK with oats which contain gluten? Or is just that you are OK if you have small quantities?
Miz says
October 18, 2010 at 3:43 amgood question. sensitive not celiacs and for some reason oats do not bother me at all! not sure U can qualify as small quantities (I usually eat a cup DRY at a time but only once a day)—but so far no swelling/rash from them.
