The following is a sponsored post by Walgreens & the Way to Well health tour.ย Walgreens had no previous knowledge I pretty much LIVE at the corner of happy & healthy and all opinions are my own.
When presented with an opportunity I know immediately if it’s a fit.
As soon as I was contacted about the Walgreens Way To Well bus tour, I knew Id say yes for two reasons.
First, this misfit LOVES her Walgreens.ย Some women adore fancy shops–the Husband knew Id be overthemoon our new Oakland home is walking distance to the ‘Greens.ย Vitamins, snacks, nail polish, toys, gifts, cards, protein bars all under the same roof? Whats not to love?!
The second more important reason is the Way to Well tour was created for similar reasons to why I launched MizFit.ย I wanted to giveaway my knowledge to people who might not have the funds for a trainer.ย Walgreens started the tour to bring *free* health testing to communities with high incidence of the leading diseases & uninsured/unemployed members.
The tests, valued at over 100 dollars, include: total cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure, body mass index, body composition, skeletal muscle, resting metabolism, visceral fat, real body age and body weight.
I was honored to be invited to attend the 10,000th event (!) and share my healthy living knowledge with my community.
And yes.ย As soon as she heard—the child announced she was coming, too.ย We all love Walgreens around here.
The Way to Well event was amazing.
Everyone was excited to get started serving the community.
Our community.
It isnt overstating to say we knew we had the opportunity to change lives through the tests offered and information shared.
They initiated me into the Way to Well tour crew:
Next we headed inside the bus.
The doctors office on wheels behemoth where the testing takes place.ย I walked through each testing module & saw not only were participants assessed–they were given privacy and undivided attention as they were evaluated.
And then I was set free.
I mingled and shared healthy living tips.
I chatted with one woman about N.E.A.T. and helped her realize there were ways to squeeze calorie burning into her crazybusy life.
Another man & I brainstormed healthy eating options he could find inside Walgreens—somewhere he said he stopped virtually daily already.
More than anything I was moved by the stories.ย
One couple drove from over an hour away determined to get the health tests as they’d missed the bus last time it was here.
Another woman shared with me how glad she was for the Way to Well health tour stop in Oakland because for the past two years she’d thought she might have diabetes.
I felt proud of my Oakland community and grateful to play even a small part in the Walgreens Wellness Tour 10,000th event.
The event I attended is part ofย Walgreens’ Way to Well Commitmentยฎ.ย A $100 million initiative to improve the everyday health of Americans nationwide.
I knew I loved my Walgreens.
I just hadnt realized how much they loved me–the royal ME. the nationwide consumer ME.—back.
- Do you think it’s important for stores to invest in the community around them?
The Way to Well tour leaves Oakland May 19th and continues across the country.ย Dates for your city can be found here.

May 6, 2013 at 4:17 amI love Walgreens. Their pharmacists offer the best customer service EVER. They are efficient, but take the time to answer questions and make sure you understand the directions. And, yes, I love the one-stop-shop-ability. I do think it is important for companies to invest in the communities that keep them going–it sounds like the Way To Well tour is fantastic. And you made the Oakland stop that much better!

May 6, 2013 at 4:34 amThat is very cool of walgreen’s to do. Very cool. I like in Tiny Town, so we don’t have anything like that with our Walgreen’s.

May 6, 2013 at 4:48 amLooks like this was a really fun event! Our local Walgreens here in CLE is great. Their stores put together a huge team for our Arthritis Walk this past weekend. They are a great supporter of the community in so many ways.

May 6, 2013 at 5:09 amLOVE that they are bringing healthcare to the masses. As a Canadian gal who take full advantage of our public health care system, I simply can not imagine what it is like to be without it.

May 6, 2013 at 5:35 amI think that’s great that Walgreens is working with local communities– when companies do stuff like that, it makes me want to shop there over the nondescript competitor.
Plus, Walgreens always carries the coolest, most random stuff known to man ๐

May 6, 2013 at 5:36 amThis looks so cool! Healthcare is still such an issue everywhere. I love community events like this.

May 6, 2013 at 5:41 amYou know I love this Carla!! SO IMPORTANT!!! The only thing I wish is that some of these clinics came to middle class communities too since there are a lot of uninsured too – people that are self employed & can’t afford to get it on their own & those struggling to get by while living in a place better for their kids & those that just got eaten up by the economy.. BUT a great thing & I wish more would do it!

May 6, 2013 at 5:42 amI love they chose you to join them MIZ.
Oakland is lucky to have you, too.

May 6, 2013 at 5:59 amThis is so awesome. Yes, I do think stores should invest in the communities. I realize they are there for profit of course, but when they integrate and actually care, that builds trust as well. I think we need more of these types of things.

May 6, 2013 at 6:04 amWalgreens is spoiled.. by YOU! They NEED you and YOUR HEALTHY MIZFIT ways, mentally and physically. SO SO HAPPY! and very cool program

May 6, 2013 at 6:08 amWhat an awesome opportunity for you AND Walgreens! I think it is so important for stores to get involved in their community. This is a great way to help people that would have otherwise not had access to these resources! Also this is a more nonthreatening way for people to learn about health and themselves!! Well done MIZ and Greens!

May 6, 2013 at 6:17 amThis is amazing and so,so,so,so,so needed. Well done Walgreens. Please come to Canada (you too Miz!)

May 6, 2013 at 6:17 amWhenever I’m traveling and need a drugstore, I say “find Walgreens” into my phone. They’re usually clean, safe, and nearby. Plus — most are open 24 hours now in big cities.

May 6, 2013 at 7:11 amMany times when I’m not in the mood for exercising on a day when I’m supposed to be exercising, I’ll walk myself to Walgreen’s instead. That way, it’s *shopping*, not exercising. The fact that it’s a 30-40 minute walk, round trip, is entirely coincidental. ๐

May 6, 2013 at 7:11 amI was just at Walgreen yesterday. I love the randomness of their stores – stuff I can’t find anywhere else, I usually can at Walgreens.

May 6, 2013 at 7:28 amWhat an amazing program! I’m so happy that you got to be a part of it. Did it make you feel even more settled in your new ‘hood?
Sadly, we have no Walgreens here. The closest thing would be a Walmart and it’s a looooong drive from my house.
Thanks for sharing!

May 6, 2013 at 8:14 amThis is a great post. I hadn’t heard about Walgreen’s tour but I adore the store as well and am very pleased with what they are doing. I think healthcare should be nationwide and it is sad that some people don’t even have access to it at all. We are all humans and equally important. Caring for our health should be #1. It’s a shame that so many people can’t.
Kelly @ Cupcake Kelly's says
May 6, 2013 at 8:50 amI love everything about this and Walgreens!
I think these things are necessary and not everyone has access to the materials for a healthier life or know where to get started. I am so glad Walgreens does this.

May 6, 2013 at 9:01 amWow – what an amazing way to spend a day. What a great experience for you and all the people you touched that day.
I have never heard of the Way to Well tour – I guess they haven’t made it through Kansas yet – I should check.
I really love that the Tornado wanted in!!!
Angela @ Happy Fit Mama says
May 6, 2013 at 9:19 amThat is terrific! So many people miss out on tests that need either because of lack of insurance or crazy high copy’s. I’m glad Walgreen’s is taking the initiative and doing what’s right for their customers!
Debbie says
May 6, 2013 at 10:40 amI love Walgreens. I like just wandering the aisles, looking at all the STUFF they have there. But somehow I guess I missed the tour. Looking at the schedule, they have already passed through my So Cal area ๐

May 6, 2013 at 11:55 amIf a store is not investing in the community, it’s not a true part of the community. Glad to hear this about Walgreens.

May 6, 2013 at 9:25 pmWow! How fun was that!? That wellness test looks awesome! I have to continually get my cholesterol checked and know how expensive that test is.
So exciting that you got to be part of it all!
Mel says
May 7, 2013 at 3:21 amFree health testing? That’s amazing. You can’t manage what you don’t measure and with health tests being so expensive this can be tough for most of us. Great that ‘big business’ is supporting the community.
