I caint lie.
I rock the #wycwyc at home.
Yep. I used the R-word.
I almost find it easy (now) and simple (since it’s become habit) only because it’s been the backdrop to my life for so many years.
More specifically for almost nine years (guess who turns nine next month?).
I rock the #wycwyc less with the foodstuffs as I’m an intuitive eater. Although, if I stop and consider it I’m a #wycwyc eater, too.
I eat what my body asks for/craves.
I listen to my body.
I don’t judge it.
Whatever I do mindfully is OK and plenty “perfect” enough for me.
tiny can NOT a 20 ouncer? #wycwyc win!
The bulk of my #wycwyc healthy living comes in the form of movement.
I haven’t belonged to a gym in years. I don’t have a home gym.
Every aspect of my (finger quotes) fitness (unFQ) routine comes from fitting movement in wherever can.
Picking up the child at the school? Playground monkey bars before or after.
Conference call at 9 am? Lunge and walk during call.
It’s become second nature. It’s fairly easy.
Until I travel.
No cart for me–I carry my luggage! #wycwyc
It FEELS as though it should be easier away from home (lottsa walking, hotel steps etc) yet for some reason it’s just not.
I think it’s partly the fact my eight year old sidekick doesn’t always want to take the stairs.
I think it’s partly the fact I’m often in meetings and sitting *and* just out of my normal #wycwyc routine.
On my last trip I decided to make my #wycwyc tee my uniform (hotel hand washing FTW!) as a reminder to do what I could when I could movement-wise and know it was ENOUGH for that trip.
(she watched tv. I fit in fitness)
I won’t sugarcoat it.
It took effort, yet for some reason waltzing around the ATX with my mission emblazoned across my chest made it feel somewhat easier.
I washed the tee. I hung dry the tee. I washed the tee. But, at one point, I had to get “fancy” as we had a play-date.
A blind play-date set up of sorts with a potential new friend at the child’s soon-to-be school in Austin.
To everyone’s relief I didn’t wear my tee.
(snazzy hotel drying rack)
We went off to our play-date and fun was had by all.
The child had a great time with her new friend and I chatted with said-friend’s mother.
We talked about school, homework and life. We commiserated about how different our days were now that we were working mothers.
“I used to run marathons and do triathlons,” my new friend shared. “Not now. Now I just do what I can when I can.”
It’s not exaggerating to say I almost fell over.
In that same way it’s amazing to hear someone capture your brand and precisely parrot it back to you—hearing that phrase come out of her mouth sparked me to think two things:
- Yes. I can do this if this busy, ROCKSTAR Mama is able to #wycwyc her movement, too.
- We have nailed it with our book! It just makes sense.
I wanted to bear-hug her and shout:
We’re the same!! I do that!! WickWick!!!
She had no idea we’ve a book coming out all about how seeming small steps add up to HUGE change.
She had no idea back at the hotel my stinky what you can when you can tee was air drying (again) because I, too, harnessed the power of those words.
but, since I long for the child to have friends at her new school I’m an adult, I did not.
I nodded. I murmured. I agreed that it’s all about doing what we can.
This last trip was better for me movement-wise than most trips in the past.
I wore my #wycwyc tee out.

October 22, 2014 at 3:05 amYES!!! I feel like this is exactly the place I am in. I ran my half this past weekend, and rather than fussing about time, training, and the impending surgery – I just enjoyed what I could do in that moment! LOVE THIS (and you – as always)

October 22, 2014 at 4:33 amI would be excited if you were my “blind date” play date 🙂
I, too, love you fit in fitness as I am struggling to break the mindset of if I cannot do 30 minutes on the bike trainer I shouldn’t even start.

I hadn’t really considered less fried foods as a win for me even if I am eating it.

October 22, 2014 at 4:53 amI have been watching Life recently on netflix, and the main character is all about zen, and living in the moment. I have been trying to apply those thoughts to my life, and you are a great real life example of it! You rock that shirt wherever you need to! Whatever you need to remind you 🙂

October 22, 2014 at 6:55 amYes and yes. I’m training for a marathon at the moment, Girl, but you need to understand – my youngest child is . . 15. The years with the working and the constant mom demands will be over in a heart beat. Maybe a very long, sometimes excruciatingly difficult but always blessed heartbeat;). Love this attitude and plan to adopt it as my own:).

October 23, 2014 at 1:58 pmI’m so proud of myself (open bragging time!) for doing well with #wycwyc. It’s so hard, dealing with anxiety all the time, but my anxiety is much diminished recently (can’t say enough how much I love my acupuncture sessions!), and that’s enabling me to just do what I can when I can. I’m getting better at the balance piece – not beating myself up OR letting myself go completely off the rails.
Wycwyc.

November 7, 2014 at 1:34 pmI love your blog and everything in it, especially when you share corny photos that make us think, lol. Since having my three children, I haven’t really been taking care of myself, physically or emotionally. I recently took my children to the park, where my daughter looked at me and said, “mommy, I wish you could run and play with us like my friend’s mommy.” Her statement didn’t cause me to feel sad, it caused me to be angry and want to do something about it. I’ve heard of a nutrition supplement and program from my friend that I’m thinking of trying. Do you know anything about this? If so, what do you think about it? I’ll have to research it a little more, first.
