Dizclaimer: Oh FTC? The shoes were free. And yes, I accepted em HAPPILY.
You may be surprised to find out that Ive started running.
It’s shocking, I know, as Ive barely mentioned it at all up in herre.
Another thing which may shock you to discover is I enjoy going to the gym and hoisting the iron (resistance bands or plopping on a weight machine).
I know. Im an enigma wrapped in a riddle. Ive heard it all before.
As a result, you shall be stunned when I share with you that I barely finished READING an email from New Balance offering me the chance to try the Women’s 710 cross-training shoes before I hit reply & shouted YES!!
(please to pause here as I yank my tongue from in my cheek)
I *really* couldnt wait to get my new pair of kicks and, as soon as they arrived (Christmas Eve morning none the less), I dragged the Ren Man & the Tornado off to the gym.
What did I like about the New Balance 710?
- It’s low profile. I can not emphasize enough how how much I adore this fact. Im not sure if it is merely me (although if you read this book then you may conclude it is NOT) but all the padding!cushioning! in running/athletic shoes these days is killing my back. The 710 offers New Balance’s patented ABZORB® cushioning and is still flat low profile enough it didnt cause excess stress on my low back.
- Its mesh upper. Im a sweater. Everywhere. ‘Nuff said.
- The 710 works for weight training and running. New Balance promotes this as a shoe for short runs. I found it worked great for longer runs (which as I type this blog all leads me to wonder what the definition of LONG or SHORT run is—anyone?) as well. I loved not having to bring a change of shoes to the gym when I both lifted and ran in one workout session.
- Its price. The 710 retails for 69.99 which seems like a great deal to me for a comfortable, durable workout shoe (that said, we know I have a costly shoe addiction & welcome your .02 with regards to shoe prices in the comments.)
What didnt I like about the 710?
- The color options. The 710 comes in silver, white and black. I longed for a pair in hot pink, bright orange or *something* with a splash of pizazz or sparkle. I think most women tend to get their FUNon with dress shoes and, since workout shoes are my dress shoes, my tastes may not be the tastes of the masses.
There you have it, People.
LOVE (comfort, breathe-ability, amount of cushioning & price) and not-so-love (color. I DO love me some color).
Now you.
You can be entered to win a pair of the New Balance 710s for the lowlow price of a comment below.
What do you look for when purchasing cross-training or short distance running shoes?
Whats your biggest lament when it comes to workout shoes in general?
Please to hit us all up in the comments.

January 22, 2010 at 2:03 amI have heard nothing but great things about New Balance shoes. My biggest thing is that most aren’t wide enough for my feet.
They look great.

January 22, 2010 at 2:39 amBoo to only USA residents contests… lol! I actually owned a pair of New Balance quite a long time ago and thought they were pretty comfortable if memory serves!

January 22, 2010 at 3:12 amWhen I’m looking to buy a new running/training shoe I’m looking for something that is lightweight, breathes well, good support, shock absorption, and stylish/cute. I have ZERO arch and an above avg shoe size so it makes it hard to find a quality women’s workout shoe. New Balance has a lot of great options to fit any athlete or fit-onista’s workout needs.

No need to enter me as I have a pair/brand of shoes I love I just wanted to say you need to get the NB people to create a Mizzy shoe in the colors you love!!!
Limited edition.
That I’d buy 🙂 and you KNOW that Id love

January 22, 2010 at 4:36 amThey gotta be sturdy. Too much mesh and they’re flimsy and I twist my ankle or my big toe (eventually) rips through the mesh (why??) . But New Balance is a winner. They prevent my rugged feet from destroying the shoe.

January 22, 2010 at 4:38 amNew reader here who is now curious about that leg ink!!

January 22, 2010 at 5:06 amI have a hard time with shoes. I like a nice, wide toebox, a snug heel, and just enough cushioning. Sometimes I get it right and sometimes I waste a bunch of money on shoes that seem ok at first but then give me problems. Trying out a pair for free would be great!

Have a great weekend, Miz.

January 22, 2010 at 5:13 amI look for shoes that are lightweight and have arch support. Fun colors are a bonus. 🙂 I get dissapointed when shoes lose their cushioning too quickly.

January 22, 2010 at 5:25 amOh, Miz, you know how bad baby needs a new pair of shoes!
My thing is just finding the right pair for my fred flinstone feet. Too much arch support and I have aches. Not enough and I have pains. Thinking it’s time to explore inserts.
I wanna winnnnnn!

January 22, 2010 at 5:29 amI really don’t have too many complaints about shoes I do have a complaint about the sporting goods store that tried to sell me a warranty on my (under $100) shoes. Ok, I get that it was store policy but the kid was relentless. I told him if they weren’t selling me quality shoes then I wasn’t going to buy them at all. Warranty? On tennis shoes? Pfft!

January 22, 2010 at 5:43 amI have bad arches and have to get my shoes off a list my DR gave me :(. There are a lot on new balance shoes on the list. I lost my list and dont know if that model is on there, but I would love to try them anyway. I spent almost $200 on my last pair of shoes, but they were so comfortable for the longest time. I think I had a footgasim when I tried them on at the store 🙂
Donna Bush says
January 22, 2010 at 5:47 amI need the cushioning. If I use the treadmill, the soles of my feet get pounded and ache later. If I go outside, the terrain varies and my feet ache later. The shoes I have now (Nikes) were great when I first got them, but the cushioning’s worn out. I hate that I have six pairs of shoes that are OK to wear for errands but not working out. I also have that lovely ankle injury from 2001 that requires a little extra support, esp if I move laterally. And like someone else said up there, my foot’s on the wide side. My main forms of exercise are running/walking and lifting weights. I’d be curious to see what this type of shoe can do for me. Thanks for the opportunity. 🙂
Jessica says
January 22, 2010 at 5:49 amWoohoo!

January 22, 2010 at 5:53 amI currently am overwearing a pair of New Balance 768 and can’t bear to throw them out. They’re the first pair of running shoes I was properly fitted for and while I never would have picked them out, they’re so supportive that I’ve grown to adore them.
dragonmamma says
January 22, 2010 at 5:57 amFlat Airwalk and Converse are perfect for the weight room. But when bootcamp breaks into a spontaneous game of basketball, I need something with a bit more cushioning for bouncing all over the hard floor.
White is okey-dokey, ’cause then I can decorate them with fabric paint.

January 22, 2010 at 6:05 amI have to say that I go purely on fit. I get mine at a store where the salesperson watches you walk and brings you pairs based on that. Fortunately the last ones that worked were a color I liked – because I agree with you about that!
Sarah says
January 22, 2010 at 6:09 amI usually look for comfort and fit before style when it comes to running shoes. If they happen to be pretty and stylish then that is only a plush. I don’t really care if they are green with horrible orange polka dots as long as they are comfy on my feets.
Elaine says
January 22, 2010 at 6:10 amNew balance is the only shoe that I can wear. I have a very high arch and very, very large calves, so I need a shoe with a really good bed and very padded heel. I would wear neon pink or green shoes, if it meant I was not in pain for days after a good workout!
Cynthia Sage says
January 22, 2010 at 6:14 amI’ve had several pairs of NB and were them until I can’t wear them anymore. My first criteria in buying shoes is to get them on sale – when new models come in stock, I may as well get last years model at a great sale price.. makes sense (and cents) to me! Color doesn’t matter to me as long as the shoe fits comfortable and has the support I need – New Balance is a winner!

January 22, 2010 at 6:28 amLove the New Balance. The only shoe (I can afford) that gives good support! Glad you found a new support from them that you like!
Mine is definatley breathability, but also the right amount of support (back problems are horrible! No go). And, a shoe wide enough to fit my flipper feet 🙂
Leah says
January 22, 2010 at 6:28 amI look for good support but lightweight in a cross trainer.
I hate having to replace them every few months as they wear down and/or break down. However, I do appreciate the fact that it is my USE wearing them down as opposed to my weight.
ShellMetDarr says
January 22, 2010 at 6:31 amI like a good cross trainer, but have trouble finding a good fit. I have a narrow heel and wide arch and ball, so my heels tend to slide. OR if the shoe fits my heel, then the ball of my foot is not comfortable because the shoe is too tight… just about the time I get really comfortable in a pair of shoes, the shock absorbers go out and it’s time to get new ones…
Eria says
January 22, 2010 at 6:32 amVERY cool that you got free sneakers! I used to only ever buy New Balance. In fact, growing up in the Boston area, there is actually a New Balance factory outlet where you can get their shoes for super cheap! I recently converted to Rykas and have been loving them too. I am a cross trainer girl because I need that ability to have nice side to side movements in my group fitness classes.

January 22, 2010 at 7:00 amOMG OMG OMG. I had a pair of New Balance once and fell in LOVE with them. Because of my limited budget, I’ve been rather restricted by what I could find new with the lables still on them in the thrift shops. When it comes to sneakers, that isn’t always good. I have a pair of Sketchers right now, but they really aren’t made for walking and running. They’re kinda more kid shoes, but when they’re what was available… hey, it’s better than wearing flip flops to the gym.
What do I look for in cross training or short distance running shoes? For me it comes down to three things: Brand Name, fit, price. Unfortunately price often dictates where I have to compromise in brand name and fit.
My biggest lament? price. So far I haven’t been able to justify the cost in my own mind. Since I want to run a 5k this year, I know I need to get serious about my shoes.
Dana says
January 22, 2010 at 7:00 amCost is a huge factor for me. The bad part about getting new shoes is breaking them!
Would love to break those babies in though!
Shelley says
January 22, 2010 at 7:10 amI love New Balance shoes. My feet aren’t quite narrow enough to require narrow-width shoes, but I find the NB shoes in regular width are just about perfect for me.
I also like the low-profile for a cross-trainer, but only if it’s a lightweight shoe.
My biggest lament? Buying a new pair of shoes obligates me to move around more! 🙂
Nita says
January 22, 2010 at 7:11 amMy biggest lament on workout shoes? The fit! New Balance are the only shoes I’ve found that fit right. I have a wide forefoot, a narrow heel, and a Morton’s neuroma required a wide shoe in the front.
And not even all NB fit. I had some cross trainers and as I working out, my heel kept slipping up out of the shoe – but I needed the wide for the neuroma. I just want a shoe that fits my whole foot!
Sagan says
January 22, 2010 at 7:12 amOoh wow those do sound nice. And that’s a GREAT price for a workout shoe… it’s really tough to find a good quality shoe for a decent price, especially one that can be used in a variety of workouts.
Tiffany says
January 22, 2010 at 7:13 amI look for good cushioning, first and foremost, with good arch support. I have trouble with my right knee, and that puts pressure on my arch, so that would be the most important to me right now. Those New Balances look awesome!
And I totally hear you on the color issue… I love my Mizuno’s because they’re bright pink and yellow! 😀
Cindie says
January 22, 2010 at 7:26 amI need a new pair of shoes soon. I have extremely flat feet and I pronate, so I need alot of stability. I’ve had Brooks for my last few pairs…..never tried New Balance, but DH seems to love them!
DinosauRN says
January 22, 2010 at 7:33 amI need arch support, HATE the wacky colors and such on many running shoes — the NB you’ve got look nice and tailored. Don’t get me wrong, when I was under 40 and when I’m over 80, the more color the better!
G.G. says
January 22, 2010 at 7:34 amI’m really limited in what shoes will work for me because I have wide feet and a really high instep. New Balance is one of the few brands that make something that works.
So that’s both what I look for and my biggest complaint–not a lot of variety out there for people with weirdo feet, and what does work tends to be really expensive:-(

January 22, 2010 at 7:34 amI am just getting back into exercising………….or trying to anyway, lol! I’m trying to find the motivation. But with great friends inspiring and pushing me along, I’m getting there. I use to love to jog, wether it was outside or on my treadmill. My workout shoes will testify to that. They are really worn out. I have said a millions times that I need a new pair, but have yet to get a pair. This would be the perfect way for me to get a pair……………..WIN THEM….YAY NEW BALANCE!!!!!! :o)
Lori says
January 22, 2010 at 7:37 amI have always had separate shoes for running. Have worn Asics for years and years. Then I have a separate pair for wearing to the gym. I probably wouldn’t wear those for any of my outside runs as my shoe is for over pronating, but they would be good for at the gym as sometimes I do a class and we end up doing some running.
Jules - Big Girl Bombshell says
January 22, 2010 at 7:46 amI look for comfort and fit. My biggest problem with walking – running shoes has always been their weight on my feet. Silly as it sounds, that is a big issue for me. I have always preferred barefoot to any shoe so walking-running shoes often “drag” me down with their weight.
Britt @ Runnerbelle says
January 22, 2010 at 7:50 amDespite all my miles logged I’m really clueless when it comes to shoes. All I know is I need something some cushioning, light weight, some support…… and doesn’t make my feet hurt, I have plantars fasciitis. My answer is going to my local running shop to get help finding the best shoe for me.
Oh and I wear my running shoes for weight lifting & kettlebell classes…. not sure if that is the best thing to do though.

January 22, 2010 at 7:59 amI’m currently on my 2nd pair of New Balance shoes. My first pair I still love, they are grey and lime green, some may say ugly but I love to wear them for dance class. My newest pair aren’t quite as comfy as that first apir was, but they have a lot more mesh and I love that so my feet can breathe. I’d love to try a 3rd pair!

January 22, 2010 at 8:00 amI look for comfort and where they are made – I try to buy US products whenever I can.
Lament: price price price.

January 22, 2010 at 8:16 amNever ever run in New Balance shoes. I’ve run in Brooks, Mizuno, and Aasics. And Zoots. I’ve been turning more towards minimalistic shoes. Just got my first pair of Vibrams, and I can’t wait to run in them 🙂
Running barefoot is being part of the world, in my mind, and a fairly easy way to do it. But I’m fortunate to have a physiognomy that permits it. For those who don’t (or who are working towards it), shoes are wonderful!

January 22, 2010 at 8:19 amI have high arches and have a hard time finding shoes with enough support. I also dislike the overly padded running shoes. So may have to give these a try.
Type (little) a says
January 22, 2010 at 8:22 amMy (2) biggest concerns when buying new running shoes are fit/comfort and looks.
My biggest lament? When they are so overly padded that it takes 2 weeks of blisters and FOOT PAIN to break them in. I don’t enjoy mixing “gym shoes” and “street shoes” so I really hate having to wear my sneakers out and about for a week before I can work out in them.
Teresa says
January 22, 2010 at 8:24 amNice looking shoes. I actually run in New Balance 1063. They are the only shoe I’ve found that gives me the comfort without the back pain. Oh, a long run for me is a 5K, but I’m working on a longer one. Slow and Steady.
BK says
January 22, 2010 at 8:27 amI have YET to find a NB shoe that can handle my mileage.. for me they are best suited as my “commuter shoes” and they help me bob and weave through the crowded subways while keeping my feet very comfy.. but I digress.
I hate the price of running shoes because the ones that tend to feel and work best for me are always higher priced.. so I just wait for the “newer” model to come out and buy the old model 🙂 same shoe just a diff color LOL
and like you MizFit my shoes have to have some color to them.. they make me feel good when I’m hitting the trails!
Tracey @ I'm Not Superhuman says
January 22, 2010 at 8:28 amI always look for running shoes that have good arch support for my flat feet. Of course, that leads me to my biggest gripe: those are usually super expensive.
Karen says
January 22, 2010 at 8:29 amThose are pretty cute but I am with you – give me them in hot pink!
I learned the hard way it is very important to have the right shoes for your feet. I have high arches and underpronate (or is it supinate? same thing I think!) so I need shoes built for that or else I suffer shin splints, hip and knee pain when I run!
Jamie says
January 22, 2010 at 8:30 amI love New Balance and wear them exclusively. Although, being Miz Big Foot, it is hard to find my size in a regular store. Thank goodness for the interwebs.
Dawn says
January 22, 2010 at 8:38 amI’m an Asics gal but that’s because I need more room in the toe area and they have that. Plus I wear a size 12 and not all shoes accommodate me. I do like a low profile shoe though and my asics are usually more pricey than 69.99 (89.99) so saving a few bucks would be nice. I’ve never tried New Balance before.

January 22, 2010 at 8:57 ami think the greatest problem I have with running shoes, and yes I do go to a running store, I never know how qualified the people are assisting me with shoe buying.
I know, nothing negative about the shoes themselves but it urks me nonetheless.
I typically run in Asics but I’m open to trying new things as I embark on becoming a runner, again, you can’t have enough shoes!

January 22, 2010 at 9:05 amI look for cushioning, roomy-enough toe space, and general overall comfort.

I look for comfort – #1! Arch support I need!!
It’d be nice to see some cool colors-I’m a ‘color’ girl too! but comfort is priority!
Because of where I live, the shoe should be water resistable- PROOF is better!! We get rain 9-10 months a year!!
To be honest, I just start trying shoes on until I get the “oh, my God” affect! Price and gulping comes later but it’s always been worth it!
Cheers

January 22, 2010 at 9:18 amCame over from the GFE as I love any discussion about shoes. 🙂
When looking for short run shoes I mostly look for a little cushioning, and a “stability” shoe. This invariably puts me in Asics or NB territory, although I had decent luck with Aetrex.
My biggest shoes buying issue is sizes. If I normally wear an 8 1/2 but I’m walking or running 8-10 miles, I have to buy a 9 1/2 to account for foot swelling. The shoe stores in my area seem chronically understocked in that size range. 🙁
Hilary says
January 22, 2010 at 9:28 amI love when the inside of the shoe conforms to my foot but is still breathable and I hate when the opening is so high it presses into my ankle during certain exercises.
Rebekah says
January 22, 2010 at 9:35 amMy biggest issue with shoes is price. My right foot hits the ground in a way that wears out the sole quickly so I need to change running shoes frequently. If I spend a lot of money of the shoes, I feel that I’ve wasted my money. I spend a lot of time looking in the clearance aisles.
Jill says
January 22, 2010 at 9:39 amI would giggle with glee if I could find some really sparkly pink running/cross training shoes!! The ones I have now (by New Balance, no less) are pink and white and I love them!
I think $70 for a pair of athletic shoes perfectly reasonable – that’s about what we usually pay when we go tennis-shoe shopping (does anyone else call them tennis shoes even if said shoes have never ever EVER stepped foot on a tennis court? Just wondering.).
Marianne says
January 22, 2010 at 9:41 amWell – the first thing I thought when I saw those pictures is “someone GAVE her shoes.” LOL.
I have found that New Balance shoes are trial and error, as each style fits differently. Agree that they are not so stylish.
My youngest is 11 and wears NB mens size 8.5 double wide. He has a high arch and a pie shaped foot – and NB is our go to brand – we can always find something he likes (he’s not a fan of the overly cushioned shoe either).
Also love that they are made in the USA.
Happy Friday!

January 22, 2010 at 9:51 amI have a wide foot/narrow heel and buying shoes that fit properly in both places can be hell. I’m a huge fan of New Balance because they seem to be made for real feet.

January 22, 2010 at 9:56 amOk, Those look /,and sound, like great shoes!!
I’m just getting into running (doing a 10K in April) and would love a pair of shiny new shoes to do it with.
I think that having a good support without all that extra “fluff” is so important, I hate when I feel I’m standing at an angle because the heal is like a foot off the ground. Also, a mesh top that allows your foot to breath would be key.
Thanks for this great opportunity!
Take care,

January 22, 2010 at 10:00 amThese shoes look like a great bang for the buck. $70 is a good deal, I think, compared to some other $100+ shoes that nearly claim to run for you.
I have a ‘thing’ for black running shoes, like they make me more powerful, so I like the fact the 710’s come in black. I also look for lightweight shoes for distance running. The run is hard enough, don’t need a heavy shoe on top of it. That’s my 2 cents, thanks for the review!!

January 22, 2010 at 10:05 amI LOVE New Balance shoes. They are one of the few manufacturers that make shoes that will fit “duck feet” – I have a wide toe box but a narrow heel.
Yes, Mara and Laurie and anybody else, NB shoes are made for our duck feet!
I LOVE that the shoes are subtley colored- though if these are the silver, not so loving. I do not wear white athletic shoes, but I also don’t want to wear the wildly colored “clown shoes” that so many manufacturers offers. Give me basic black or gray and I’m a happy girl.

January 22, 2010 at 10:39 amI just started running last week. I’m on the 2nd week and it’s truly a challenge. I did buy new running shoes but have been told I’ll need a new pair long before the 1/2 marathon in Dec. that I’m going to be training for…yes you head that right hubby has talked me in to trying my best to run a 1/2 marathon in Jamaica. Oh my have I been scared LOL
Anyway, when it comes to shoes, I had no idea what I needed but went to an actual running store where they looked at my feet in this digital monitor and it told them what type I needed. Anyway, I didn’t get New Balance this time around but I have NB cross trainers and love them so I’ll most likely go back to that brand for more running shoes when the time comes.

For me the thing I worry about most with running shoes is stability. I have back issues and pronation issues so for running shoes I need stability.

January 22, 2010 at 10:50 amLove the shoes! I’m an avid recreational runner and I have enjoyed New Balance shoes in the past (I’m not that picky when it comes to shoes).
As for what constitutes a long run, I’m pretty sure that’s all relative. For someone just starting out, 3 mi. can be a long run. 10 mi. might be considered long for someone a little more advanced. A seasoned marathon runner probably wouldn’t consider anything under 15 mi. to be long.

January 22, 2010 at 11:02 amI LOVE a snug shoe, so a good solid upper with a nice snug fit and lace are what I want. I also really really prefer shoes that are non-leather but do you KNOW how hard that is to find in running shoes??

January 22, 2010 at 11:17 amI’d have to say New Balance & Aesics are my favorites. Ultimate mission is to find a pair that doesn’t result in my toes going numb while on the elliptical!

January 22, 2010 at 11:18 amI need shoes that fit like a glove on my soles. I’ve got very flat feet so many shoes cause my knees to hurt big time. My biggest issue with shoes is – what else – the price and how often I need to replace them!
Katie says
January 22, 2010 at 11:20 amI’m usually an Asics girl, but the price tag kills me every time. I would love to find a stellar pair of shoes that will work for running and lifting weights that are under $75. I’d even settle for under $100! Color would be great too. My friend and I used to have a contest to see who could get the gaudiest, loudest, most colorful running shoes. I won with yellow and silver adidas. So ugly they were awesome!

January 22, 2010 at 11:55 amI usually look for a running shoe that is affordable and supportive. I also like a decent size toe box for wiggle room. Arch support is a must. I have never tried NB but I really like the low profile of these. They look really comfy. Oh, and I won’t buy running shoes that make me look like I’m wearing clown shoes or that I may be from outerspace. 🙂
Cindi says
January 22, 2010 at 12:10 pmPrice is my biggest lament too! Sometimes I can’t really tell if a shoe is right for me until I’ve run in it for several weeks. I would love to try the NB shoes – I don’t care what they look like as long as they feel good. For short runs and crosstraining, I look for a very flexible shoe with good support in the upper so my foot doesn’t slip around.
Amanda, another priorfatgirl says
January 22, 2010 at 12:26 pmi used to wear the wrong size running shoes. i thought i was supposed to wear the same size as my regular shoes. not true for me! i need a 1/2 or entire size bigger than usual … which puts me at a 10-11 shoe. that’s what i look for. comfy shoes that fit my clown feet.
i dislike shoes with too short of laces. i mean, come on, i need enough length to doubleknot those puppies.

Comfort is number one when I pick cross trainers. I’m not much of a long distance runner (I prefer springs and interval training) so something that is comfortable and doesn’t cost a fortune is perfect for me!
Lori (Finding Radiance) says
January 22, 2010 at 12:52 pmThat is a good price for shoes, really!
I don’t know what a long distance runner would be. I think it is all relative. I think anything over 6 miles is long to me now. A 3 mile run used to be long to me.
It’s kind of like that question of how fast do you have to be going per mile before you are considered a runner and not a jogger?
I need to have shoes with a wide toe box for my wide feet. If there isn’t enough room, I cannot function for very long.

January 22, 2010 at 12:52 pmi look for a shoe that is made for us supinators (i think that’s right) – anyway, those of us who walk on the outer edges of our feet. also a slightly narrower shoe. and yes, something a little flashy. heck, a lot flashy.
my biggest peeve is the price of athletic shoes! we don’t all have hundred of bucks to drop on a pair of shoes.

January 22, 2010 at 2:58 pmWOW! I wear NB for my running shoes right now! Only ones I could find that fit these flat/wide/bunion feet! I don’t care what they look like for exercise shoes as long as they fit my dang feet! How they fit & feel is why more important to me than look for exercise shoes. As for money, I try no too go too high BUT I have to worry about these bad feet so finding one that fits, feels good & works is most important to me & right now NB is the one for me. I would love a pair for shorter or even everyday use! I only can afford 1 pair of workout shoes at a time so this would really help!

I tried a lot of shoes and for me I need not only comfort but lots of cushion and support (bad knees) So far the one that I like is by Saucony and they have been great.

January 22, 2010 at 4:02 pmWell, my biggest lament regarding workout shoes is that many times they don’t seem to fit in the heel. So when I jog, it feels like my heels are slipping out. January 22, 2010 at 5:22 pmWhat do you look for when purchasing cross-training or short distance running shoes?
Comfort. Support. I’m a heavier runner, so I need something cushy to keep from breaking my runnin’ parts.
Whats your biggest lament when it comes to workout shoes in general?
No color choices, especially in wide sizes. GAH.

January 22, 2010 at 5:30 pmI go to a running store and they fit me for shoes based on my needs. I leave it to the pro to decide what brand. My favorite color is purple and it was funny, my first pair of shoes that they selected has a purple stripe. Now that is a knowledgeable sales guy.

January 22, 2010 at 7:11 pmFor my running shoes I swear by one particular local running store with good staff and a liberal return policy. I’ve never actually had to return anything (see “good staff” above) but it’s nice to know I could. For cross-training, however, I am much less sure. Just bought a new pair to wear during my Jackie Warner video workouts, so we’ll see how it goes. My lament about those is I won’t really know if they are comfortable until I’m well into a workout.

January 22, 2010 at 7:14 pmWhen buying a trainer, I look for shoes with more support for lateral motion. For my running only shoes, I look for ones that will hold up to all the miles, have a wide toebox, and mid-height arch support. I have high arches, but after a long run, too much support starts to hurt. Is that weird?
Oh, and I used to consider 5 miles a long run, then it became 10+ was long. I’m sure when I start running again I’ll consider 6 to be a long run! It’s all about *destination*, not *distance*!

January 22, 2010 at 8:09 pmFor my RUNning shoes, I go to my favorite running store and have the people choose several pairs for me to try on. I choose the pair that (as I run up and down the strip mall sidewalk) feels the most like I’m not wearing shoes.
For general workout/short run at the gym to warm up shoes, I look for reasonable price, fairly cute, and very comfortable. Mine right now are actually New Balance!
T says
January 22, 2010 at 8:19 pmfor me, comfort. comfort. comfort. i have the hereditary bunions of doom that make shoe shopping in general ridiculously annoying and painful so i go for a shoe that is automatically comfortable. from there, obviously, performance, but y’know.
ideally, it would also be in a color that i like (blue or green family) … mine currently have pink accents and i do not really like them. still, they do the job, so i don’t complain. much.
as for the long/short run thing … one person’s long run is one person’s sprint. my long runs right now? 4-5 miles. later this year and in life? those are probably going to be on the short end of the spectrum for us. for the ultrarunners … that’s barely a warm-up.

January 22, 2010 at 8:27 pmOooh free shoes! I think that even beats “Free Food” as one of my favorite phrases in the world! I am a die hard aasics gal, they just fit my feet right, but if it wasn’t my dime I would *CERTAINLY* give anything a try. For my running shoes, I go to academy (yes, I know I should go to a running store…. but it’s 50 bones vs 100+….), try on everything for about an hour and if they feel good standing, I bounce around a while and find the pair that make my feet not hurt. The pair I got this time are super light, and not so paddy but very SUPPORTIVE and gel-ish.
And for me? Depends on how I’m training. Short distance training? Short is a 5k, long is a 10k. Right now, a short run is a 10k, a long run is 10 miles+.
Running Knitter says
January 22, 2010 at 8:29 pmI haven’t bought a pair of cross trainers in years! I would definitely look into this for shorter runs…I’m guessing that’s around 4 miles? I’d be a little hesitant to wear them in any distance over that…
For me, any pair that has the support I need and keeps the pain away is a winner.

January 22, 2010 at 8:48 pmWhen I buy shoes, I need something with a heckuva lot of cushion, because my feet are bratty and get sore quickly, but they also need to be pretty stable. My feet are finicky. The biggest issue I find with buying shoes is that you try them on in the store and think “oh these feel good, I’ll take ’em” but then you run and/or work out in them and they feel different.

January 22, 2010 at 9:30 pmI look for a shoe that fits! I have a very narrow foot with high arches, and therefore it is hard to find a shoe that will fit. I LOVE running shoes, and have found that not only are the most comfortable shoe, they are also the really the only one that fits properly.
My biggest problem with a shoe is that most are made in medium or wide widths, and I can not wear them.
Nice shoes by the way! I did not even think about a cross trainer to lift with. I use the weight machines, and I also use the elliptical or treadmill, and I use my running shoe because it is what fits best.
Do you have any thoughts about that?

January 22, 2010 at 9:35 pmI make no distinction between short distance, cross-training etc. I just buy running shoes and end up using it for everything.
My biggest issue: I need a wide toe-box.
I often buy bigger sized shoes so that my toes don’t reach the front.. not very satisfied.
I have a NB which I like , good fit, has become old now. I have a Brooks something or the other, got used to it, but fit not as great as New Balance. Supernova Adidas.. Ugh.. bad for my feet.
In the market for new shoes as I hope to pick up running more as Spring arrives.. looking for older models of NB so I can get a price break.

January 22, 2010 at 9:49 pmI love NB shoes and I definitely need a new pair. I have a huge foot (size 11), so sometimes it is hard finding comfortable athletic shoes because they stop at a size 10 or you have to order online.

January 22, 2010 at 10:33 pmHmm. so many variables. I need a nice cross trainer. I like a lot of cushion. I like a wide toe box. I have 5 or 6 half-worn out pair that all have their pros or cons. Mostly that they’re ugly, or at least not as cute/stylish as I’d like. I live in BFE so I don’t have a bunch of choices. I need to try them on so I don’t buy online. So a lot of the time I just end up with whatever feels good that they have in my size, ugly or not. I currently have Nike, Adidas, Avia and 2 New Balance. I think I like the Adidas the best, comfort wise, and the Nikes are a cool color combo. The rest are white-ish and fugly.

January 22, 2010 at 11:02 pmI have been running for 3 or 4 years, and have never had a new pair of running shoes. Mine are a hand-me-down from my mom, who ran in them for a good year or two before she gave them to me. So what do I look for?! An affordable, comfortable, attractive (I like black!) pair of NEW SHOES that I can break in all by my very own self. Shoes that do not poke in any spot, or rub in any spot; but that I will have no issues with just wearing to lift weights or do other cardio. What do I lament? that my current pair of running shoes may just fall apart sometime very soon and/or paralyze me – I just started training for a half marathon…so any day now, and bam! no more shoes?! And that it’s so hard to get a decent, honest fitting from a salesperson anymore…
Melissa (TheDailyMel) says
January 23, 2010 at 2:08 amThe shoes look great! The thing I look for most when picking a new pair of shoes is fit, fit, and more fit! While I love cute shoes, it they don’t fit me well, then they are staying at the store. I have uber-flat feel (as in, if I walk barefoot through a puddle, I leave oval footprints on the sidewalk). Because of that, obviously, fit and motion control is a huge issue for me.
My biggest frustration when buying new shoes is that so many stores (including running shops) don’t seem to carry the wide width shoes for women. This means I usually end up having to buy a man’s shoe which still feel a bit clunky overall, but they still fit better than a standard width woman’s shoe.

January 24, 2010 at 11:21 amHiiii!
I have big fit, high arches, and I’m heavy… My feet change sizes as I gain/lose weight.
I used to be a Reebok woman, now I dig New Balance almost every time.

January 24, 2010 at 3:17 pmNB were the first shoes I purchased when I started training seriously for races. They were like magic on my feet. I guess we just have chemistry! I love them and always tell people to try them if they never have. I tend to use the “short distance” ones for any distance!

January 24, 2010 at 4:45 pmI’ve been recently diagnosed with plantar fasciitis and so comfortable, supportive shoes area must for me.
I’d love a new pair with a pricetag that could offset all the money spent at the doctor!!!

January 24, 2010 at 5:52 pmYou can’t beat the price on those Bad Larrys, I like the low-profile look too! After years of buying running shoes that got good reviews and/or looked cute, I finally got a clue and got a proper fitting at a running store. I can’t tell you what a difference that made.
I’d love a pair for lifting/cardio classes. Thanks for the chance to win! Hope you’re enjoying a lovely weekend. 🙂

January 24, 2010 at 9:46 pmI look for stability and weight, I like them lightweight! When they are the right shoes, they make me feel like I have wings!! I don’t really look for anything certain, other than those 2 things. Pink is always a plus. 🙂
Yay for you running too!!

January 24, 2010 at 9:57 pmThanks for the shoes review!
I look for stability in terms of lateral movement when trying out cross-training or short distance running shoes.
My biggest lament is the high price of quality workout shoes!

January 24, 2010 at 10:10 pmI look for a wide toe box for my small, but wide feet. And of course comfort!

January 25, 2010 at 1:32 amIt seems like whenever I ask a runner what shoes they recommend, it’s always New Balance. That’s a great sign.

January 25, 2010 at 7:53 pmI look for sturdy shoes with great arch supports that keep my ankles from rolling in. Those kinds of shoes are hard to find! Oh, and my budget is under $100.
