Ok, People.
It has been ages since we did a good ole fashioned Tuesday Tip List Compilation (was it really way back here? no wonder if feels so long ago!).
And, seeing how it’s still kindasorta still the New Year, I thought it would be the perfect time for us to make a list of our fave calorie burning tips.
We all know that exercise helps us to shed the unwanted el bees & stay stressfree & in shape—-Im thinking those lesser known more RANDOM tips we all have tucked up our sleeves for private use.
Please to roll up yer sleeves, share the tips youve been hoarding & help us all make 2009 the year of the Buff Bumbling Band.
I shall start us off:
- Circuit training (& get your heartrate elevated by peeking into Miz’ dayjobwork).
- Weight training in general boots one’s resting metabolic rate by up to SEVEN percent.
- Take advantage of those dress down days at work & implore your boss to institute more.Β Studies show when we’re dressed casually we are more likely to take the stairs/park far from office & walk which results in an EIGHT percent increase in calorie burning (not to mention better health always means fewer sick days.Β try point that our to your boss if s/he resists!)
- Β Green tea is said to boost fat burning as well & help to burn up to 80 additional calories a day
(80?! I may stick with my coffee.)Chime in here, Oh Bumbling Band. You drink green tea? Have any recommendations?
- Im all about the finding of exercise in unexpected places during my day. Hell, you can even ‘spend’ the extra calories you burned off
on oreos—-just burn em! - VISUALIZE.Β I know. It’s shocking that Ive added this to our calorie burning list as who knew I believed in this stuff? The Journal of North American Psychology, however, is (finally) agreeing with me.Β Β Β Their study showed that exercisers who employed visualization of exercise completion were able to GAIN STRENGTH even prior to hoisting a weight (and, as we all know, more strength is more muscle and more muscle is higher metabolism).Β Β Whether you believe this or not (and I’ll admit even I’m a skeptic) it cant hurt to spend a few moments focusing & visualizing & seeing what transpires.
*whew* (mops brow and ponders adding wracking one’s brain for a blogpost under little known calorie burning tips)
That’s what I have & now it’s your turn.
Are you a fan of the Mediterranean Diet for its fat burning properties?
Do you lunge & pace when chatting on the cell to burn a few extra calories in the name of multitasking?
Please to vigorously & energetically hit us all up in the comments.

January 20, 2009 at 2:11 amThanks for the reminder about green tea. I haven’t had any since before Christmas. I like it flavoured with pomegranate.
Calorie-burning tip: I get the Sissell ball rolling while I watch TV.

January 20, 2009 at 2:36 amCleaning, walking the dog that extra 1/4 of a mile, cycling to work, organizing the highest cupboards in your house…imagine all that up and down on the step stool, plus reaching, lifting and lowering!

January 20, 2009 at 3:24 amI love your idea of finding ways to exercise in unexpected ways. Before the holidays I was good at walking on the treadmill while I was on the phone. This is a good reminder for me to do it again.

January 20, 2009 at 3:32 amCleaning definitely! Though I could do more of that π
I think planning is great for burning calories if that fits in here. If I have my lunches/dinners etc planned for the week then my chances of making dodgy eating choices are greatly reduced.
Kick-boxing is also a great and it’s just wonderful for stress too ! I love the punching!!
tokaiangel says
January 20, 2009 at 3:37 amI always jog up stairs (sprint if its two flights or less), always always. I wonder how many extra calories that is in a lifetime?
I practiced my dance steps in front of the TV last night too – and doing stretches/reps in ad breaks is another good one – what else are ya gonna do? Watch the ADS??
TA x
crazylady says
January 20, 2009 at 3:44 amI must start exercising during ads! There are enough of them. I find I tend to run out to the kitchen to get a few bits & pieces done during the ads. I feel ultra productive then even though I’m sitting on my ass watching tv π how deluded eh!

January 20, 2009 at 4:45 amThis will only work for a select number of people, but here goes.
I’m a lucky duck and have everything I need within walking distance. I’m also single. When I go grocery shopping I bring my backpack and a re-usable carry bag, so I walk to the store and then come back lifting weights so to speak. It’s a little something, but it makes me feel better especially if I couldn’t get my run in that day.

January 20, 2009 at 4:48 amI found having a couple of kids did wonders for me — I rarely get to sit down and am often picking up one or the other of them for some reason! :o)

January 20, 2009 at 4:52 amMy calorie burning fav is cleaning, a full sweep mop and dust not only helps melt the lard, it also makes me feel organized and motivated to cook and exercise.
Thanks for the reminder about green tea, sipping some now π

January 20, 2009 at 5:01 amI am a total fidgeter.
I know it used to annoy people but now I care far less as I think that’s what has helped me gain less weight than I could have LOL.
I’d suggest foot tapping when you have long stretches at your desk. It has to burn calories!!
Thanks for being you Miz.
I love coming here in the morning.
Sally says
January 20, 2009 at 5:39 amThe key for my calorie burning is doing something every day (ok am I remembering right that youdid a post a while ago on being consistent? that is what I mean too).
I fit something in no matter what and it keeps my motivation from dropping.
Once i statrt skipping moving (and it can just be a short walk) I start skipping days at a time.

January 20, 2009 at 5:54 amand sadly (or goodly? who can say?) anxiety ridden people tend to be more lean, FGF.
all that stress induced fidgeting I guess.
Im tossing in walking the dog or, should you not be caninely blessed, walking your neighbors dog.
Or should you inexplicably loathe the four legged companion: increasing the SPEED of your walking every.single.time. you pass a dog anywhere for your own form of interval training!
Erin says
January 20, 2009 at 5:57 amI keep trying to start fidgeting and it hasn’t worked out yet, I think I look like an obvious faker, hee! I too take the stairs (which limits days that I can wear “cute” shoes, I’ve even been planning my footwear around the idea of walking/stair climbing instead of joining my classmates in elevator and shuttle rides. I walk up escalators, carry my groceries to the car if possible instead of using the cart. When I remember I get up to change channels or volume instead of using the remote. When I’m about to get out of the shower I wipe out the sides and bottom with a poof or rag and body soap, keeps the shower clean and adds a tiny amount of something daily.
Most of the things I think of were covered by Miz, great post I will come back later to see what else was said.
Linda/Hughsmom says
January 20, 2009 at 6:05 amI’m relying on DVDs until spring arrives and we are ice-free. I have them from L. Sansone, Biggest Loser, Jillian, Prevention, Denise Austin (too perkY, bless her heart) and I mix them around so I don’t get bored. I do Jillian kick box on Sunday to really rev up. Otherwise, I got nuthin’. Walking the K9s is my fave. Oh, I guess going sledding with Hugh is another great workout. If you have snow and have never been sleding or it’s been year, get out and do it. It’s a rush emotionally and physically – and think of the walk back up the hill!

I find my calorie burning extras the simple way: taking the stairs.
I had never thought to appreciate the fact I don’t wear dress shoes to work.
I’m going to thank my boss today for every day being casual.

So I have to ask – do “they” say that you should work out at a higher level or lower level to burn fat? I thought it was longer slower workouts but I’m not sure that’s what “they” are saying these days..

January 20, 2009 at 7:00 amThe calorie burn is a great idea, but also keeping track of the calorie intake is important. Writing down all of your food you’ve eaten for the day is an old trick to keep an eye on the calories coming in. Using a site like can help with this.

January 20, 2009 at 7:05 amI pace when on the phone, but only when it’s my mom. Fortunately (?), we talk most days, and conversations are rarely under 20 minutes, so maybe I can start counting it as a bit of extra cardio (low-med intensity, depending on topic of discussion)
I’m with Hanlie on the ironing during TV viewing. I feel so much better than when I’m just sitting & watching. Plus, I love the smell of starch & steam.
Good question, Natalia – might try the HRM on my regular whole house cleaning day. I’m looking forward to MizFit’s answer on the current thoughts of “they”.

I’d heard that green tea burned 106 calories/day, as long as you drink 3 cups.
And BK and I have “battles” where we try to kiss each other’s face the most amount of times, without getting kissed. There’s a lot of running, weaving & bobbing, and dodging involved.

January 20, 2009 at 8:25 amI LOVE sneaking in exercise. In the summer, I like to hop on and off the curb as I walk places (yes, I am actually a 10 year old trapped in a 27 year old’s body) and in the winter, because I got me some KICK ASS winter boots, I like to slop through snow because I know there’s extra resistance.
My tip would be to always take the stairs if they’re an option. I make a point of doing that. The little stuff counts.
MizFit says
January 20, 2009 at 8:26 amA little disappointed not to be couchplopped all day watching the events in DC, but I’m confident there shall be plenty of exercise opportunities involved should you be lucky enough to be able to do that.

January 20, 2009 at 8:27 amI usually dont find extra ways of working out, because my memory takes care of it. 2 times out of 3, I forget something at home and have to run back to get it.
I am also short, so my puny hands cannot carry much in one go. So i do less multi-carrying!
I cannot sit still during a phone conversation so most of them are undertaken while cooking or taking a walk.
Cam says
January 20, 2009 at 8:33 amWhen sitting at stop lights or waiting in line I do muscle contractions, usually alternating between gluts and abs.
Green tea is terrific. I read a study somewhere (http://www.webmd.com/balance/news/20030520/tea-fights-bad-breath-mouth-bacteria) that stated that green tea helped to kill the germs that cause bad breath, so it is a good thing to have at the office. If you have issues with iron absorption, be careful, as research has shown that an acid in tea and coffee can inhibit your ability to uptake iron from your food, so drink the tea awhile after meals.

Visualizing helps you to practice the event! It (usually) lights up (i.e., activates) the brain area devoted to motor movement as long as you’ve practiced them! It’s called embodied cognition (most research involves experts though, like hockey players). Coolest research ever.

January 20, 2009 at 8:52 amYou got most of mine already, circuit training being my ULTIMATE favorite and fidgeting being the ace up my sleeve. π
As for exercising in unexpected places – I used to be a member of a web weight-loss group and one of the things I came up with for the group was what came to be called “B-Room Es” for bathroom exercises. Not as gross as it sounds – just that every time we’d go to the restroom (which is a LOT when you’re drinking 120 ounces of water a day), we’d take the time to do about 15 lunges, 15 squats, and some wall push-ups. I would also do some other arm work with a resistance tube. You have to have a pretty big bathroom to make this work (ours has an anteroom so it was perfect) but you could do the same thing in your office or (if you don’t mind strange looks) at your desk.
It ended up being at least five sets of each, and it was a great way to ensure I got plenty of work in when I was working two jobs and didn’t ever get a “traditional” workout…

These days, when I’m having such a hard time fitting in what I think of as “proper” exercise, most of what I’m getting is little bits that I fit in… so my two tips are:
1. Keep a pedometer in your pocket. Try to up the number of steps every day. I like things I can count!
2. It’s still exercise even if you’re sitting. I keep small weights next to my comfy chair so I can do light upper body and leg exercises while I watch TV. It all adds up. And there’s no reason why you have to do everything at once… do a different stretch for a few minutes every time you stand up.
Sagan says
January 20, 2009 at 9:16 amWalk to work, walk to school, pace around room/do step ups while reading, cook/clean, make daily tasks slightly less convenient (mix things in bowls by hand rather than use appliances, wash dishes by hand, take the long route to classes), strive for 500-2,000 jumping jacks each day… the list goes on!
Also, if you leave your house at the last possible second, it gives you extra time to do stuff at home and then you’re forced to run to wherever you need to be. Hehe.
Love sharing and seeing what everyone’s tips and tricks are!

I did a total 180: from avoiding exercise to figuring out how to cram it in, so I’m enjoying the tips. I had a “d’oh!” moment the other day: I was going to call my dad, and was going to plop down in a chair…wait a sec! Trotted down to our bedroom and plopped onto the *exercise* bike, and got in 30 minutes. Sheesh, why hadn’t I thought of it before? Granted, we just got the bike a couple of months ago, but talk about overlooking the obvious…

January 20, 2009 at 12:54 pmI drink 2-4 cups of green tea a day with the hopes of staving off any cancer cells with polyphenols. I don’t use it for weight loss. I kind of think what might cause a weight loss would be a belly full of green tea.
My green tea of choice (because it’s the one I have found so far that I enjoy) believe it or not is sold by the Big Box store Costco as Kirkland Signature Japanese Green Tea – Sencha Green Tea, Matcha Blend.
I once bough some very expensive matcha and the person performed a tea ceremony with us. Passing the special cup back and forth could burn a few calories.

January 20, 2009 at 1:02 pmMy unexpected ways to exercise:
1) Vigorously cleaning – especially scrubbing tubs or floors that haven’t been scrubbed in a while, seriously, last time I scrubbed my bathroom after having had a whole bunch of guests and not having cleaned the tub for like a month, I felt like I had just about the same workout I do lightly elliptical-ing
2) Walking while talking on the phone – I just cannot sit still when I’m on the phone so I walk all around the house, including up and down the steps.
I’ve never been much of a tea drinker, but if it burns an extra 80 cals/day, I may have to rethink that!

January 20, 2009 at 2:24 pmI love Green Tea. I used to *hate* it but since I cut down on sugar and hated normal tea without it, I got used to green and now I love it – can get through 3-4 cups a day. My whole family is addicted now – kinda funny that when I went back for a visit over the holidays, none of us drink regular tea anymore!
Getting exercise in is easy when you refuse to email everyone in the office and instead go to their desks for quick questions. Also, I walk from the bus stop instead of getting another bus to take me 3 blocks. It’s a LITTLE cold lately but it’s exercise!
And I pace when I’m on the phone – always have. And I’m a major fidgeter. Annoys people but now I can tell them I’m just exercising π

I finally bought one and plan to make that my mid-day calorie burner.

January 20, 2009 at 3:10 pmMy absolute favorite green tea is Candy Cane Lane from Celestial Seasonings. It actually has a nice flavor!
As for burning extra calories, I’ve been known to let my enormous golden retriever chase me around our kitchen island. He never gets tired!

January 20, 2009 at 3:38 pmBesides cleaning house inahurry, raking leaves, painting (ouch, my arms!), I’m adding in a mad dash between car to shops or office buildings. It’s 30 yards at a time, at most, but it all adds up.

January 20, 2009 at 3:49 pmvery cool stuff on a very cool day! I drink green tea every day…about 2 cups π and am a fan of the mediterranean diet as well. I do think that exercise keeps the metabolism going and I have heard that you can really boost a slow metabolism by exercising in the morning and night. I really need to do more in the evenings………I know it would help.

January 20, 2009 at 4:16 pmInspired by your grocery aisle lunges, Miz, I do hallway lunges – whenever I go down the hall in my house (provided hubby isn’t home) I do walking lunges. My house is a New Orleans double shotgun, which means it’s long and narrow – so from front door to back door, I can get in 25 lunge-steps.
I also have a beautiful-but-lazy cat, so when I do laundry, I put my clothes away one piece at a time: she follows me every where I go, so ten or twenty tiny trips between bedroom and laundry room keeps her reasonably svelte, aside from throwing balls for her (which really only works my arm).
I love green tea, especially matcha, but pretty much most teas, as log they aren’t to sweet and frou-frou, I like. I figure most of them have some antioxidant power so I don’t really pay attention to the kind.

January 20, 2009 at 4:45 pmI do the often cited , “park far away” and walk thing.
I also climb the three floors to work, though every so often the devil gets into me and I press the elevator switch. I have very poor core strength and I try to contract my abs while driving, esp. at stop lights. I try to climb up two steps at a time to simulate a deep lunge. I sprained my ankle a few years ago and so I try to strengthen my ankles my standing on one leg when I brush my teeth. I also do it when I am waiting for water to fill up my bucket during my bath ( this way the water is much hotter than from my shower.. some heat lost in translation.. umm.. lost in transfer from shower head to my body).
I love circuit training because I am an elevated HR fiend. But I am not fond of strength training and I feel like when I do CT, I don’t get the full benefit of either cardio or strength workout. I like to do boring straightforward isolation strength exercises where I can use some heavier weights rather than the more enjoyable fun circuit training with light weights.
Alright,. I burned enough calories typing this. π

January 20, 2009 at 4:52 pmextra burning activity: I stand during the day. Besides the shopping, cleaning, walking the dogs activities, I have my computer set up on a high table so I can stand while reading blogs, etc.
The “experts” say you burn about 10% more calories by standing over sitting. Easy to do and effective.

January 20, 2009 at 4:56 pmWelll . . . I like crunches during commercial breaks. I don’t watch a whole lot of TV, so I’ve got to make it count! Ha! Sometimes instead of crunches, I’ll speed-clean on commercial breaks. I can clean a bathroom (well) in 4 minutes flat. No lie. *Grins proudly* And that usually makes me break a sweat!
Not so much a “fit more exercise in” tip as a “Get your butt to the gym” tip: I started dowloading my favorite TV shows on iTunes, and I’m ONLY allowed to watch them on the treadmill. I’m working on back episodes of Lost right now, and it’s amazing how easy it is to spend 43-48 minutes on the treadmill when I’m totally entertained! HA!

January 20, 2009 at 5:29 pmBeing newly carfree, I bike and walk everywhere I go, which almost would count as exercise except for how slow and lazily I travel. I have started walking up a flight of stairs for drinking water, as the kitchen down here always has a bowl of chips. I used to be really fidgety, just noticed that has mostly stopped.
And most importantly, even if I feel like sitting on the couch and muching, I can drag myself kicking and screaming to the gym.

January 20, 2009 at 8:30 pmGreat ideas for finding ways to exercise. It is good to open our eyes and see all the opportunities we are missing.
BTW, I am a fan of the Mediterranean Diet.

January 20, 2009 at 11:31 pmChoosing almost anything outside rather than inside, as a general rule, is a good idea. There are exceptions..for example..eating a twinkie outside is still eating a twinkie, I guess. But where I live, if you’re outside, you’re at least moving or you’re cold.

January 21, 2009 at 1:27 amHey Miz,
These are some great tips! I for one have been utilizing the circuit style workouts… but in a different way. Rusty from the Fitness Black Book gave me the idea of the 2 day workout split and it’s been fantastic! This Bumbling Band member is getting seriously buff!!
All the Best,

January 21, 2009 at 6:24 amGreat post! I work out at the park! While I play with kids i do lunges, pull ups on the bars, sprints from one point of the park to the next, etc . .. so I can combine having fun with my girls and exercise. When I just have one girl for the day I put her in the jogger and run to the park and back (it’s about 3 miles total).

January 21, 2009 at 12:34 pmWrite it down…if I write down everything that goes in my body, I’m less likely to shove crap down my throat…plus I like filling out all the good things that I’ve done for myself in a day…like drinking my water…taking my vitamins…working-out…and of course eating clean…it gives me a nice sense of accomplishment for the day π
As for the Mediterranean Diet…I’m a huge fan (except the fish = allergic)…but other than that I’m all about the good fats, low fat cheeses, veggies, legumes and nummy grilled meaties…plus you can eat this stuff every two – three hours easily. I definitely see results when I eat this way…granted I may have a problem with gluten.

January 21, 2009 at 9:49 pmi walk to get groceries sometimes. it’s a nice 50 minute walk there and back. plus if i listen to the radio (npr as of late) i can catch up on the news. other than that, i sometimes randomly alternate between standing tiptoe and regularly when waiting for the subway.

January 21, 2009 at 10:51 pmI am with @Pod. I drink the same boxed green tea from Costco. It’s actually quite nice and for the price, the quality is outstanding! I am also drinking Rooibos Tea and Yerba Mate.
As far as revving up the metabolism. I wish I knew what was wrong with me. I am having such a hard time losing weight even though I have been diligent. I am not seeing the results I would normally see when I dieted in my 20s. It is immensely frustrating, but I am totally committed to doing things the right way. : )

January 23, 2009 at 10:09 amYeah, too late on the comments I’ll bet but up here shoveling snow and making snowmen, snow forts, etc. will keep your motor running. Green tea, yuck. I figure the caffeine in coffee will keep me fidgeting to burn more than 80 calories.

December 2, 2010 at 6:18 amThank you so much, this was a good read. I was actually born in Madrid ( not telling you what year though!) but was moved around various parts of europe and lastly settled in England when I was 7. I dont remember much of the few years I was in spain, but the smell of spanish food always seems to ring a bell in me or something. It’s weird how I dont remember anything except the smells, isn’t it! I even found a whole website dedicated to spanish recipes, which gave me great delight and thought I really should to share with your readers. Anyway, thank you again. I’ll get my son to add your cast to my rss thing…
